I went to Chutney with a friend recently and was absolutely delighted. I ordered Chicken Tikka Masala and branded biryani — the meat is perfectly marinated, the spices are bright and balanced, the portions are large, you can safely share. The atmosphere is simple and cozy, the staff is polite and fast — you can see that they are cooking according to real recipes. Excellent price/quality ratio for San Francisco, I will definitely be back.

We went to Chutney and my taste buds are still throwing a party. If you’re looking for authentic Pakistani flavors that taste like a warm hug, this is the spot!

This place is amazing. The prices are great, the food is full of flavor, and the spices are perfectly balanced. Every dish tastes fresh and well made, not too bland and not too spicy just right. The service is also excellent friendly, fast, and welcoming. Overall, it’s a great spot for delicious food at a fair price, and I would definitely come back again.

Best Indian food in San Francisco. I have been coming here since 20 years ago, and it is still the same fantastic taste and great prices. Now I live in Utah and every time I visit San Francisco I go there with my family and kids. A must try restaurant.

Chutney Restaurant never disappoints! Their Chicken Tikka Masala is my go-to and the best I’ve tried in San Francisco. I’ve been to other Indian spots, but this one is always my favorite. Amazing food every time!

This is hands down one of the best meals in SF. Ive been going here since 2005 with my family and many many nights as an adult. Dont be sketched out be the location, the food here is absolutely clean and delicious. Go with a group and get a 3-4 plates to share with some naan, biryani, and tea. Or my favorite grab a few naan's with some seekh kabab and onions. Wrap together and enjoy.

This was my introduction to South Asian food and I do not regret it one bit. In the moment I felt as though I had tasted the best food of my life. So much flavor that fulfills you like nothing else. I will say, the atmosphere isn’t the best, but the employees treat you well the food makes it all up to you. I will absolutely be a repeat customer. 5/5.

I’ve tried other Indian restaurants but I must say this one is definitely my favorite. The flavor of their food was delicious and the customer service was amazing super friendly and very nice. The best of all is the price omg so affordable and better than other expensive restaurants I’ve tried. I highly recommend them.

My experience at Chutney Restaurant was not the most pleasant. The food is generally normal, but the atmosphere leaves much to be desired. The neighborhood around looks unsafe - there are a lot of homeless people on the street, and you feel uncomfortable because of it. In addition, there is an unpleasant smell near the restaurant, which also spoils the impression. Inside, the situation is quite simple, without comfort. Unfortunately, I don't want to come back here because of the environment.

We recently had the pleasure of dining at Chutney Restaurant in San Francisco, and overall, it was a pleasant experience with room for growth. The ambiance was cozy and welcoming, though a bit more attention to lighting and decor could enhance the atmosphere. To start, we ordered the garlic naan, which was perfectly fluffy and fragrant, with just the right amount of garlic and butter. It paired beautifully with the chicken tikka masala, which featured tender chunks of chicken bathed in a creamy, spiced tomato sauce. The flavors were robust and well-balanced, making it a highlight of the meal. The chicken breast dish was also well-cooked, juicy, and paired with a mild sauce that complemented its natural flavors. The lamb chops were another standout: they were succulent and had a nice char, with a marinade that brought out deep, savory notes. The biryani was aromatic, with fluffy rice and well-spiced seasoning. Each bite had a nice blend of herbs and tender meat. The beef dish was flavorful, though it could have used a bit more seasoning to elevate it further. A lovely touch was the complimentary milk tea, which was soothing and well-prepared, offering a nice, sweet finish to the meal. In summary, while the food at Chutney Restaurant was enjoyable and showcased some really tasty dishes, there’s definitely potential for refinement and improvement. I’m excited to see how they evolve and enhance their offerings in the future.

We ordered chicken tikka and seek kabab and chicken kharaye. Chicken tikka and kharaye was very delicious and filling. The seek kabab was ok. The tea was amazing had to join the line to get it. Its a dhaba.. not clean i think when last time I was there it was cleaner and oh ya it is dog friendly too

We came upon the recommendation of our Lyft driver because we prefer local cuisine. It's absolutely no customer service. The restaurant is old and you get cups and plates like you did in elementary school (very old). I was not disappointed with the food but I was not overly pleased either. The three consistent truths from all the posts are (1) food is incredibly reasonably priced (2) food is cooked by Mexicans and (3)it does taste authentic enough. I had curry goat, hubby had chicken marsala and we shared the meat stuffed naan.

Finally got a chance to visit this place after numerous recommendations from friends. I came in with high expectations but frankly was a bit disappointed. We ordered two main entrée: the lamb Biriany and the chicken Tikka masala. The biriany was good (but not the wow I was expecting). It was pretty much what I would expect at an average Indian/Pakistani restaurant. It didn't come with the usual yogurt dip and that was a bit weird. The masala was bland (in Indian food standards) and honestly was even below average. I also didn't like the fact that you have to order Naan separately for all the curry entrées. There was free Chai which is typical, and the Chai was good. I saw lots of people ordering kebab dishes so it must be good, but until I try that I wouldn't recommend it yet. Update: Tried the kebob and wasn't impressed. It was dry and too spicy. I also tried the tandoori chicken and it was OK. The curry (chicken Tikka masala) was good and the best thing in this place for me. Atmosphere isn't great and lots of noise. Better to order to go.

This place offer decent Indian cousins. We had veg Biryani and it was our first meal in San Fransisco. Briyani was good in taste. For the rayta you have to pay extra dollar which should not be the case. Overall the amount was okay as one serving was good for two people for which we shell out 12$. There are other options available as well. Don't expect much on the ambiance here. They offer takeaway and accept cash and cards both.

I waited more than 1 hour for the food, which was very disappointing. The food itself was okay, not that good, and didn’t really meet my expectations after such a long wait. On the positive side, the prices are reasonable, which is a good point. Overall, the service time really needs improvement.

An honest review. I went once in 2015 and enjoyed it so I vowed to return again. I did return in April 2025, and I must admit I was disappointed. The seekh kabab was dry. The chicken leg and thigh was dry. Two dishes where you’d expect to be moist/tender but they were far from it. The butter chicken lacked punch although the chicken itself was okay. The biryani lacked flavor; it was very plain. The naan was good however. Made fresh. And the magaz masala was just okay. To top it all off, the desi tea they give for free had no milk in it. Tasted like flavored water. They were however, busy so they must be doing something right. And they have been in business for a number of years. Maybe I just went on a bad day.

We came here for our last meal in San Francisco. The place was among many Indian restaurants on the same block. As we entered the restaurant, it was loud, busy, and “hole in the wall” is an understatement. Customers occupied the tables, and many were going in and out. I approached one of the busboy and asked him if we can sit at any empty table, or should we wait to be seated? He pointed at a guy in the front taking orders. I picked up a menu from the front desk and sat at an empty table. The table was filthy, and nobody cleaned it after the last customer. When we were ready to order, I went to the front to place my order. I asked the guy if the menu item comes with rice, bread, or salad. He told me no, just the meat. Rice, bread, and everything else has to be ordered separately. I ordered the lamb chops with rice, and the chicken, beef, and lamb kabobs (all kabobs are ordered separately) with naan bread. I asked him how big was the naan bread, to assess how many to order. He exaggerated it was big with his hands, like I asked a stupid question. Then I asked him if I order the lamb chops, and the 3 different kabobs, will I be trying all the different meats? He pervertedly replied mumbling, “yes you can try my meat, they’re really sour.” Appalled at whether I heard that correctly, I said “excuse me?” He said “yes, they’re good,” not answering my question. I added 2 naan bread and a mango lassi. When the food and eating utensils came, our appetites diminished. The plates were chipped, and stained with food—clearly they weren’t washed properly. I took the plates up to the same guy in the front, and without acknowledging it, he told me to go to the back near the restrooms, and get new plates. The “new” plates were all in similar condition, chipped and dirty. I picked up a couple and cleaned them myself. The water jug and glasses looked foggy and dirty-it’s time to replace them. The naan bread and rice were dry, and the rice was clumpy. I couldn’t distinguish between the 3 types of kabob, as they all looked and tasted the same-dry and falling apart. At first I was surprised the lamb chops were red, as they’re usually darker. They were salty, but better than the kabobs. The mango lassi (mango smoothie) didn’t taste like a yogurt based smoothie, but overly sweet and watery like mango juice. I’m glad I ordered it, because it helped us down the dry food. I don’t like places that charge for everything separately, like items that usually come with the entrees (rice, bread, salad, etc.); maybe it’s a west coast thing. Then there are up charges for complementary sides (or should be) like sauces. Their customer service is non-existent, I almost felt like I had to do everything myself. I definitely didn’t like the front guy’s attitude (he’s Afghan/pakhtoon as I heard him speak Pashto or a similar dialect). Definitely don’t recommend and won’t be coming back to this place. Only reason I didn’t give it a one star was because of the complementary self serve milk tea for dining customers.

We searched restaurant, and on basis of review and rating we decided to go to this restaurant. Food order to be given at counter by self. We order paneer dish and order came on time. But when we ate paneer, it was some unusual taste, something different, we tried to cut paneer pieces but it was difficult to cut. My son was also with me, when he tried to cut second paneer piece, he couldn't cut that. When we cut paneer pieces which was little larger in size, center or cut piece was irregular BLACKISH BRWONISH COLOUR PANEER. We feel unpleasent to see this. We called the person at reception who was just passing by. We asked him what is this? We mentioned its difficult to cut paneer. He explained, pneer is marineated and thats why black from inside. He cut one piece with more pressure, but was unable to cut another piece of paneer with maximum force. He said it may happen, we objected paneer should not be like this, this was ROTTEN and possibly kept frozen for WEEKS. The owner or whoever that person was arrogant, and didn't listen, didnt apologized, and didnt changed the dish, he said, this is ok, may happen sometime. We were not satisfied, he not saying truth, we know that and we can see that. We had arguments, I said should make a complaint of this, owner become irritated and said go ahead, go ahead, make a complain. We were very upset, as we already ate part of some paneer dish. We left remaining items. Just ate naan. That person height was about 5 feet 10 inch, looks fair complexion, looks like like restaurant owner and educated but behavior was very bad. At end we went at reception to pay, owner offered us 2 dollar discount on bills. But I refused to accept any discount and paid full amount. Even at reception owner was critiquing me that I should not say , what is this? I should request him to change with something else. This is very bad Owner providing bad quality rotten paneer to customers, not saying sorry, not apologized, and proving their clients are wrong. He said, so many desi came here. I said will take action, I will do something. He didnt give us bill themselves. I asked for bill then he given us some print which have amount only. May be Knowingly he didnt mentioned restaurant name of chatting government for not paying taxes. I will say, never visit this restaurant if you care for your health. Many time I felt like vomiting, and feel unpleasant whenever I remember this episode, very unpleasant both food quality and owners behavior.

I had a very bad experience with this restaurant. I made two orders, and the app showed they were ready. But when I arrived, the guy at the counter told me to wait, and I ended up waiting a long time even though the app said my order was ready. He never apologized and handed me two bags, which I assumed were my correct orders. When I got home — I had invited friends for dinner — I opened the bags and found out the order was completely wrong. I called back the restaurant, and instead of apologizing or trying to solve the problem, the guy was rude and blamed me, saying he was looking for me after i leaved and blaming me for the bags he gave me. He didn’t accept the mistake, didn’t try to fix anything, and his attitude was very disrespectful. This was a very disappointing experience and I won’t be ordering from here again.
