Avis sur Schmidt's Tobacco & Trading Co. Albany
A must-visit place for anyone living in the area (4/5 Green Stars) Bring cash! That’s the first rule of Schmidt’s Pub. Maybe it’s the only rule! I’ve been coming here a bit more regularly, lately – more visits in the last year compared to the previous decade, in fact. Now I wonder what I was waiting for. According to the East Bay Express, Schmidt’s Pub is “basically your living room, but better” – that does sum it up, except that very few of us have living rooms anything like this, with a cozy fireplace surrounded by comfy armchairs and rustic tables beside sunny windows. Not many of us have living rooms with Old Speckled Hen on tap, or populated with an entertaining parade of quirky folk and friendly dogs. If the people and dogs are not entertaining enough then pick up a copy of Calvin and Hobbes or A History of Clay Pipes (okay, I made that one up) and have a little retreat with a pint. 4/5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact, based on these factors: • Beer on tap (transported in reusable kegs) has a much lower footprint compared to bottles or cans. • Allows you to bring your own food, which is good for folk like vegans who are often more comfortable with BYO. • The snacks available at the counter could be a bit more Berkeley (or Albany)! They were mostly from big corps – Lays chips (PepsiCo) and chocolate bars from Mars. Would be nice to see a more imaginative/ethical selection. • A great community space with an inclusive atmosphere. Schmidt’s is home to many groups (e.g., knitting) and provides a second family for many, some who send postcards from their trips! • Finally, we shouldn’t underestimate the importance of having a place to slow down, reflect and connect with each other a little. In that respect, Schmidt’s Pub is worth its weight in gold.
Schmidt's is a rare anomaly. A cross between an English pub, a bed and breakfast and the living room of cultured intellectual. Where else in the East Bay can you enter a 100+ year old house, choose from a selection of ales, lagers and stouts on draft and in bottles and cans and an assortment of fine tobacco, cigars and smoking accessories, sit down in a chair with a wooden table and read something, including the books on the shelves? Truly a wonder. And if you do purchase a cigar, you can smoke it outside. I wouldn't be surprised if people discuss Proust here. Cheers!
Cool place for a beer, coffee, tea, and/or a smoke. Cash only, so be prepared! I wasn’t. 😬 Outside seating was cool, mid-room was fun, backroom was cozy with some intense conversation. All cool stuff. There were a bunch of fun games too!
I loved the experience of making your own cigarrete while drinking craft beer. I also liked the cozy environment.
Lovely small town bar-feel on a vibrant street. Bring cash, and a book or a tobacco pipe.
Good vibe. Loved the time spent with friends here! Note: Don't forget the cash.

Awesome old watering hole. Very cozy inside and good size deck outside that allows smoking if you are into that. Good selection of pipe tobacco and accessories. This is not a place for children or people under 21. Great mix group of different ages. Thankfully not hipster. Cheers
A great relaxing environment. Awesome knowledgeable staff on local brewed beers. Also a lot of great tobacco types to choose from. The seating areas are comfortable and arranged to engage others visiting. I ended up staying for 4 hours because the groups I sat with kept changing and the conversations interesting.
This is an incredibly special place, quite literally my favorite bar in the Bay, maybe anywhere. There's nowhere like it... The ambiance is cosy and inviting (there is a fireplace, armchairs, no loud music, no tvs), everyone is friendly and social, and you can go to drink and smoke or just read a book or get work done at one of their tables. An absolute gem
My new fav spot! Authentic, unpretentious, and full of good vibes. Excellent spot for reading a book, writing your thoughts, or conversations with fellow patrons. Excellent beer selection. They also have pipes you can buy if you don't have one. Really enjoyed the outdoor patios, one in front and one in the back!
Great place, especially if you're the smoker friendly type. Good (if quite pricey) cigar selection. Roll your own (cigarettes) for 75 cents. And good prices on good beer. I could easily spend an entire day here.
Great pub and basic tobacco selection, esp for rollies and pipes. Small outdoor covered patio for smoking. Indoor is very cozy though a bit cold, and a great front patio when weather is nice. Service is gruff and cold, and offputting. Live music on occasion is great. Love the books and comfy armchairs.
Fun little tobacco lounge. Great options for rolling your own. Theres about 6 taps to choose from and some wine options. Good spot to catch up with friends.
This place is unique and cool, and supports a dying breed - smokers. Walking in feels like you're both stepping back through time and across the pond. Service is always incredibly friendly and the offerings on tap are authentic (Old Speckled Hen!). If you're into that sort of the thing the tobacco is always fresh and a good selection. Cigars, pipes too!
For cigarette smokers, definitely best! Even though you are not, you will like the atmosphere.
Great place, good choice of tobaccos and nice drinks. Good prices as well. The only thing I’m not going here that I’m not smoker. But if I’d smoke that would be the place!
Front deck and back patio are great places to meet interesting people. Every third Thursday is live music with bluegrass. The rest of the time is nice and cosy inside. Definitely a good place with special atmosphere.
This is a very special local spot! They only accept cash, the clientele is very interesting, and it feels like a blast from the past. You can also smoke cigars there! The wine selection is also quite good. Highly recommended!
Great vibes here! Really enjoyed the selection of English beer on tap and Port wines.

Hole in the wall for tobacco smokers and beer lovers. They have beers on tap, as well as bottled beers and wines. Everything is CASH ONLY, and you can roll your own tabaco for $1. NO MARIJUANA. They’re pretty serious about the tobacco.

Cash only! It’s a cozy place to meet up friends for a chat, the drinks are pretty cheap, definitely a great place to go. I had a glass of wine there but it tasted like the bottle was opened for a little long.
