If you want the best bagel, you go to Bergen County, Fair Lawn NJ or Rockland County, Monsey NY. If you want the best pizza you find the last Italian guy in the Bronx still making pizza. When it comes to Knishes, there is only one place that is holy, Yonah Schimmel on Houston St. in NYC. Unparalleled! Service is way over the top, best Knish this side of Uranus
Tried the Bluberry Cheese. It was a delicious!
These amazing knishes do not need all the usual fluff or stylish atmosphere to sell me. I've had knishes. I've made my own knishes (just for fun they were ok). Never had I even considered a sweet knish! I absolutely loved the chocolate! The shop is old and well worn in. I love it. Thank you to whoever the bakers are for adding a little love as the special ingredient common among any baked good worth eating. 😍
Excellent knishes. Had them shipped to me in perfect wrapping and condition. Stuffed with plenty of potato or any knish they make. Delicious, fresh and amazing quality. Pure comfort food. Highly recommend!
A Knish is something we'd never tried before. We figured if we're going to try one, it better be from someone that knows what they are doing! We ordered a mushroom, a red cabbage, and a cherry cheese Knish (all of them warmed up). No dining inside so we stood around the corner. We liked the red cabbage better than the mushroom, but both were good. Cherry Cheese blew us away! It was so good that immediately after finishing it, we went back and bought a blueberry cheese to try. Go here! So good!
I heard about this place last week on a short visit to NYC when two ladies in a nearby tea shop told me about it. I wish I got their info because I can't thank them enough. This place is delightful and incredible! One of the best places I visited. I couldn't get it off my mind so I ordered a dozen more through Goldbelly. Guess I'm obsessed and also jealous of New Yorkers who have this wonderful place at their disposal anytime. Can't wait for my shipment!
Amazing knishes and the latkes came out hot and sizzling straight from the oil (not reheated in an oven to lukewarm, like Ben's in midtown). Place is small and they are a stop for walking tours in the neighborhood, so it isn't unusual to find them out of a few things listed on the menu. Stuff is made fresh, every day. I'd rather that they run out than have too much would would either be used the next day, or thrown away (which would raise the prices).
worth the shlep i have no have a kasha knish - this good - since i was a kid.. this place 100% has a few dozen jewish grandmothers in the basement making these things. never been here before - but... the price is amazing.. the quality is INSANITY the taste/texture/flavor is just amazing.. me and my cuz didnt want to wait for the line at the overprices deli a few blocks over. so we dropped in for this - got a potato and a kasha, went to the park and sat on the steps to nosh. we both instantly said "yea we have to get to take home" and we did.. i took a few home and gave to my 71 year old dad his first bite stopped and was like "NOW THIS IS A KNISH" i will be back.. many times.
I initially came in in a bad mood with someone, and you know how when you're in a bad mood everything is terrible? Well I tried this, and even with my terrible awful mood I could not for the life of me find anything to complain about. The opposite; in fact. It was so absolutely delicious I couldn't help but eat every bite with a huge smile on my face. Thanks for taking away my bad mood and making me a happier person today. Yonah Schimmel, your knish is magical!
It is one of the only old time knish places i know, potato, sweet potato, kasha, cherry cheese, chocolate cheese, blueberry, Must go and try one. Only place that was like that was mrs stalls and coney island which is gone
We got two knishes to go. Customer service was good and they heated them up in the microwave. Potato Knish - 3/5 - Nothing special, simply mashed potatoes in a ball form. Needed some seasonings or flavor. Blueberry Cheese - 5/5 - SO DELICIOUS! Absolutely amazing. One can solve the sweet tooth of 2-3 people. Will definitely be coming back for more of the sweet ones.
A wonderful local knishery that I've been going to for years. Spinach, broccoli and mushroom knishes are personal favorites. They are cash only, and are closed on Tuesdays, so keep that in mind. Their knishes are fresh and delicious, and you can ask to have yours heated, before heading out with a paper bag, knife and fork, a packet of mustard and some napkins.
Not really my cup of tea, but not bad. Interesting food for what it is. Had some other customers cut right in front of me and nobody say anything about it on my behalf that worked there 😂 But ok whatever go right ahead. Someone told me to come check it out so I did, it was fine. Probably won't go back, but if you're into this type of food I'm sure it's considered great!
Legendary. My grandfather used to eat there over a hundred years ago.
If you're expecting Edison lights and a sleek countertop of reclaimed lumber, maybe this isn't the right spot for you. This place looks like it hasn't changed one bit in a century and NYC is losing so many examples of that. My husband and I shared one plain potato knish, just to set a "baseline". It was smooth, buttery, creamy, and mild. We added a little mustard too for some spice. Service was curt but efficient and I managed to coax a smile out of the guy, apparently my superpower. They do a majority of their business shipping the knishes out.
Very good. It was a cold day and that hot knish was lifesaving!
A NYC favorite of mine, will be forever. Grabbing knish here is a top memory. I just went again today, got Kasha. Don’t forget the mustard IMO. Heaven.
Real deal kinish. Made fresh daily and just the perfect balance of outer crust and inner potato.
Hidden GEM!!! YUM!!! When this area was Jewish Yonah started selling Knish from a push cart and then moved up to brick & mortar. He really wanted to be a Rabbi but when he got here there were already too many Rabbii - good thing his wife had a delicious Knish recipe because they are AMAZING!!! The best Knish I have had!!!!
Great food delivered on time - lived up to all my expectations!
This is a teeny tiny shop that has been around since 1910. What do they make? Only the finest traditional knish is a wicked amount of sweet and savoury flavours. Sit in one of the rickety chairs and have it warm or if you are lucky enough to live near take a mess of them home. The place is loaded with photos and steeped in history. This is a walk backwards in time. Truly such a gift it is still here. Please follow @joannasable on instagram for more food and travel fun.
I now know the wonders of the knish. I'm especially partial to the cherry & cheese. The man behind the counter was so kind. He said he was sorry - kugle and soups are now only on the weekends. He's sent me to B&H Dairy for matzoh ball soup. How can I refuse? What a special place. I'm so glad I made the effort to go today. The dumbwaiter lifts trays from the basement kitchen to the shop. The knish case shows it's age (1910) in a way that endears. Look up for architectural details. The special when I was there was pumpkin raisin, by the way. "You don't have to be Jewish to eat a knish." Street level entry to the basement kitchen. I'm a fan!
Love going there every Sunday. The workers are always nice :). My favorite options are the potato one and the spinach one. I’ll Keep trying so I can update :). Plus there’s a lot of history over this area.m, definitely one of the best spots to stop when hanging around the lower east side.
Still the best knish in town: for taste, for atmosphere, for selection...and for all that history packed into a small space and a bountiful culinary package. And if you don't understand what a "knish" is or what this history is: start at Yonah Schimmel's for a quintessential New York story!
So pleased! Had this delivered to GA, shipping was fantastic with dry ice and a thick bag, so arrived cold!! As a kid in NJ my mom would get knishes from Pathmark that were square and thick crust. These did not have that crunch, but flavor fantastic and spot on. I put in oven for 10 minutes and center was still cold, so nuked for 45 seconds. They didn't stay firm enough to eat by hand, wonder if need to bake longer with maybe an egg brush? Or pop in fryer with oil for a crisp outer and soft inner? Overall, VERY HAPPY, one is enough to share, very fresh taste, highly recommended.
We made our annual visit for a baker's dozen of their famous delicious knishes. A visit to Yonah Schimmel's is a like a trip in a time machine, allowing me to have a taste of the piece of the world created by Eastern European Jews in America a little more than a century ago. Not a lot to look at, especially during COVID, but it's the taste you come back for year after year. I hope my unborn grandkids get a chance to enjoy their knishes, especially the kasha knishes - a taste of heaven. Just freeze and you can enjoy them for months!
After many, many years of eating Knishes, I finally found The Perfect Knish, one that would make my Grandma blush with envy. The Kasha Knish is sublime!!!!! You can feel the history.
I don't find knishes intrinsically interesting, but it's hard to imagine them done better than here. The worker warmed them up for me beforehand. Of the 3 I had, my favorite two were the potato (the pepper works well with it) and kasha (a taste I rarely encounter nowadays). Spinach I liked, just not much as the other two.
A classic that’s known amongst locals and was featured on the show Billions. I got the spinach, the apple strudel (highly recommend), and raspberry cheese, along with a cream soda and a cherry soda. They were all solid, the guy behind the counter is great, and it was all decently priced.
This is literally a journey back in time to old Lower East Side Manhattan. The owners kept most things almost as they used to be since the beginning. For me, any business serving food for more than a year is good, more than 5 years is really good, and more than a decade is a miracle. This place has been in business since 1910. Now that's impressive! Once you go in you feel like you traveled through time to the good old days of NYC. Pictures and news clips from decades ago. But the real treat us the knishes themselves. Oh man I can indulge in them forever. I tried most of the flavors over the years and none of them every disappointed. The fact the place was visited and is favored by the likes of Barbara Streisand, Woody Allen, Larry David and more, must be doing something right. If you've never been, this place is a must! P.S. this is the original knish. Everything else is cheap imitation.
On New Years Eve, around noon, I found Yonah Schimmel's Knish Bakery. Walking down on 1st ave, busy talking, I made an error by making a right on E Houston St. I passed other Jewish Food places but I did not lose my interest in Yonah Schimmel's Knish Bakery. We retraced our steps on E Houston Street and I focused. I found the bakery, chose two savory knishes and my companion chose two more for himself. We walked to the corner to find a basketball Park. Happy with the weather, we sat on a park bench to Enjoy our Well Made Baked Goods. On Christmas Eve, I returned to purchase knish. The mozzarella and jalapeño caught my attention. Vhuntermassage LLC
Yonah Schimmel’s Knish Bakery is one of those old-school New York gems that’s been around forever and still hits the heart. I grew up stopping by here and grabbing breakfast, so every time I walk in, it brings back real childhood memories. The knishes are still exactly how I remember them simple, flavorful, and comforting in a way only NYC classics can be. One thing to note is that there’s no longer indoor seating, so it’s more of a grab-and-go spot now. But honestly, even taking my knish to eat while walking through the Lower East Side still feels right. If you appreciate real New York history and classic flavors, this place never disappoints.
Classic NY comfort food experience. Just plain and simple: their thing is knish. They have sweet knish, they have savory knish. They have been making knish for 125 years, and it really shows. Because I was planning it was my knish right away, they happily warmed it for me and they have delicious mustard available. I opted for cabbage. No one likes a dry knish, and this was appropriately moist and generous with the cabbage filling. Will be returning soon to try the other flavors!
No frills. Take out only. But I think it’s been in business since 1910 according to their website and the original recipe goes back to the 1880s! A true NYC hidden gem (and I say hidden bc the exterior is so unassuming). I went sweet over savory and my cherry cheese knish was heavenly. The staff warmed it up for me. They take both cash and card. I believe they are kosher too! I’ll be back to try other kinds and would recommend to anyone in that area
Went 1/5/25 and it was reliving my childhood. They no longer have any seating but they still old school favorites and some new items. I purchased a dozen and got one free. I also ordered a mozzarella jalapeño for my son in law. I like sweet ones too though most of my family doesn’t. They were out of Dr Browns which is usually my favorite to go with a knish. A large regular is $5.50 which by New York standards is a good deal. They will heat up in microwave if you want it now to walk and eat. I take mine home and enjoy them after I heat them up in oven. They are midly flavored which I like. This is just a piece of NYC history and again reminds me of old school lower east side. Even the older gentleman who served me when I was younger was still there is the business. Wow! I always enjoy a stop here for knishes
This place has a very historical significance for the migrant community. With not much money they survived on starchy food. Knish was the to go staple. Honestly I have never had a Knish before. It was delicious. Both savory and sweet with cream cheese. The Knish is not meant for one person if you are not hungry. It was really heavy. It was amazing and a must try.
THE OG. So, I am 46 years old and had never eaten a knish before. I knew on our trip to New York I had to sample some of these delightful treats. Did some research and determined Yonah Schimmel’s was THE place to go for awesome knishes. The shop is something from another era, and I want to protect it at all costs! Love the little storefront, the tin ceiling tiles, love the classic NYC guy who works behind the counter - what a character! The whole thing was a knish EXPERIENCE and on top of that, the food was truly amazing. We grabbed our food in a paper sack and walked right around the corner to a charming little park to sample their wares. The sweet knish was my favorite, tangy blueberry and sweet cream cheese filling, the potato dough it was ensconced in was a pillowy sweet delight, just sweet, smooth pastry. The apple streudel was no slouch either. Writing about it right now from my couch in Georgia, my mouth is watering and I wish I could have another one immediately. The savory knishes are also delicious, warm, fragrant and so filling, like a delicious hug from the inside of your belly! My daughter, who LOVES mashed potatoes, thought her knish one of the best things she’d ever eaten. Not that I have anything to compare them to, but I feel like if you like a knish, you are going to love this place. And if you are like me, a knish virgin, Yonah Schimmel should definitely be your first.
My family told me about this longtime new york establishment so I just had to stop in. I wasn’t terribly familiar with a knish so I think I was a little ignorant about all of it - I went with the spinach. Would love to come back and try the blueberry cheese knish, or something from the sweet menu. Credit card minimum is $10, fyi, so bring cash.
This is what I imagine life must have been like decades ago. I mean, I lived decades ago LOL but not in NYC and I was just a child.... but if I were an adult in NYC in the 1960s, I could see me stopping here on the way home from work two or three nights a week :-) The two of us sampled a total of four items and we loved everything. Very happy :-)
I have been wanting to visit this place for over a year. Only 2 people allowed in the shop at a time due to COVID restrictions. The guy working the counter was friendly. I ordered the original potato knish since it was my first time ever having one. It was soft and moist. The guy asked if I wanted it warmed up. I made the mistake of saying yes and he used a microwave. I make an effort to never use a microwave when preparing food so I was a v it disappointed but I didn’t want to be rude and tell him no after he already had started to hear it up. The knish was good. Was offered a small serving of mustard to go with it. Glad that I tried it.
Blast of the past! This place was a fun stop along our tour in lower manhattan. Some knishes were delicious, favorite was the spinach. Some were not that great like the Kasha. Service was friendly and prices are decent, $4.25-6.00 per Knish and buy 13 pay for 12. Worthy stop for some old Nostalgia! Edit for September 2025 seems temporarily closed per sign on the door.
The guy in the back seemed really put out I came in. Then I dared ask questions. Completely dismissive with one word answers and not looking at me, just looking off in the distance somewhere, letting me know how important I was. He did recommend the cherry or the blueberry savory knish, and recommended it be heated. Then he made sure I leave to make sure I didn’t dare think about eating in the store. I think this is NYC charm? 😂🤷♂️👍🏻 it was very good! Not at all what you get from a vendor on city streets.
I know us tourists have descended upon this place, so it's a little critic proof. I did enjoy the large knishes. I could only get through one-and-a-half of them. The potato knish is indeed like just eating a big potato wrapped up. Dessert knishes are mostly cream cheese with a little fruit in them. So, their size is commendable and the service efficient -- throwing knishes in a microwave to heat them up. It's just one of those places that has been discovered and makes you wonder that it's likely that even better knishes are to be had elsewhere in NYC.
TLDR: sweet or savory, there’s a knish for everyone! I got a spinach knish and a blueberry cheese knish. The spinach was just ok but the blueberry cheese knish was awesome! I really enjoyed the sweet knish way more than I thought I would and I’m glad I tried it because it turned out to be the favorite of the two
My first time ever trying a knish, and I’m so glad it was here! They offer a wide variety of options, making it hard to choose, but everything looked incredible. The waiter/hostess was an absolute doll, providing warm and attentive service that made the experience even better. I recommend stopping by if you’re in the area!”
Made a visit to this historic gem and decided to indulge in the renowned knish, both in its savory and sweet renditions. For my culinary voyage, I opted for the blueberry cheese and the daily special: pizza flavor. Let's talk about the savory contender first, the pizza-flavored knish. It was tasty, no doubt, but it paled in comparison to the decadent blueberry cheese counterpart. This blueberry cheese knish was an absolute revelation. Imagine a generous filling of sweet cheese custard, boasting a luxurious consistency that falls somewhere between whipped cream and cream cheese, all elegantly crowned with a dollop of fresh blueberry jam. Every bite was a harmonious symphony of flavors, and trust me, I couldn't stop myself from savoring every morsel. It was that good. Now, the pizza knish had its merits too. It was like a doughy embrace, hugging a flavorful mashup of mashed potato, pizza sauce, and a slice of cheese on top. While it was undeniably delicious, it didn't quite reach the lofty heights of the blueberry cheese sensation. As for the price, it tallied up to $14 for both knishes, which might raise an eyebrow or two. But hey, considering the historical significance of this place, it feels somewhat justified, especially in the context of today's rather disheartening inflation rates Lol.
Knishes are still good. Not being able to sit in the shop has turned me off to going entirely. Bring back tables for those of us looking to sit with a soup, some pickles, and a knish which we catch up with lifelong friends.
Always wanted to try this place since a lot has changed in the area. The knishes were ok, a little pricey, but what hasn’t gone up. The service, eh, nothing great. The atmosphere was like taking a step back in time. It was a nice experience, but once is good enough. The food is good, but not worth the price to keep going back.
Yes this place is historic but there is a limit to shabby chic. This place is falling down. It may be clean but it looks like a dump. Oh and they closed the seating area so you can only take away. The savory knishes are just ok. The sweet ones are spectacular.
Classic NY institution, but I cant help but wonder why they think its acceptable to microwave their product. They spend all this time making the crust and then they microwave it ... at this point you might as well just ... give me a scoop of the interior ... the crust plays no role other than as a vehicle for the filling. It could've been so much better. The kasha flavor was great tho, and the potatoes inside were seasoned wonderfully
First time trying a knish. I love the history related to the immigration story, the store itself is an awesome collection of vintage imagery and funny play on words with “knish”. As for the taste, we had broccoli, it’s OK, nothing more, nothing less. Mashed potatoes, a little bit of broccoli taste, thought it could have been saltier. Overall, worth a try if you are in the area for the history of the place, but not a show stopper either. Average experience.
I heard about Yonah Schimmel from a YouTube video showing its knishes and singing its praises, and decided while in New York to pay it a visit. The video showed a bright, sunny, cozy eatery that was clean and welcoming. The first time we went, it was 10-15 minutes before closing. We were struck with the dingey, horrible interior, a tiny little space, blocked from the rest of the restaurant by a stack of old boxes. Although it was open there was no one there. There were no knishes left in the store, and as we called for someone to serve us, no one answered. We left at about 8 minutes to closing, and a clerk was soon behind us, locking the door right in our face. We figured, wow, if the store looks this terrible, and the service is this bad, the knishes here must be amazing! We also thought that since it was before closing, maybe that's why there was no seating. If we came during peak hours, 11am, maybe the entire experience wouldn't be like walking into an abandoned store after a zombie apocalypse. We came the very next morning, a full 40 minutes after opening, 11:10, and same deal: boxes blocking off the deeper recesses of the place, it looks dingey, and there is no one at the counter, although there are some tepid looking knishes in the store available to order. After calling into the void of boxes, a gentlemen emerged who did help us, with perhaps a slight attitude of annoyance, like we were interrupting him or something. As there was no where to sit down and eat (unlike the misleading YouTube video, which seems to show a radically different restaurant and experience), we had to walk a block just to eat our knishes on a park bench. We got the classic knish and a cherry cheesecake knish, and I have to say, they were ... ok. I've had better (albeit less traditional) knishes from food stalls all over New York. Neither were fresh, and the potatoe knish was cold on the inside. The Cherry Cheesecake knish was hardly a knish at all, more like a rich, creamy dessert which is probably what people come for, but I didn't think it was anything special. I was looking forward to eating here for a long time, and I was extremely disappointed by the service, the restaurant, and the knishes themselves. Maybe they were great once, given some of these reviews, but I wouldn't recommend them and I'm never going back. Don't believe the hype.
Sadly the worst knish I've had. No flavor and heated up in a microwave. The place looks like it hasnt been updated or cleaned in 50 yrs.
Old and rundown place, knish was reheated using a microwave. Flavorless portable mash potato ball is what this was. Skip this place the 4.5 is a lie
