This owner is awesome! We were evacuated by helicopter and landed next to the restaurant. The owner was right there to offer us a free, lunch and drinks. There’s not that many people around like him anymore and we sure did appreciate him. Thanks again.
Monica was awesome. Food was excellent. The place is great
Excellent food and service. Reasonable prices. Homemade apple pie and fruit of the forest pie. The best. When traveling on highway 38 this is a must stop for breakfast, lunch or dinner. There is a well stocked grocery store next door for that item you forgot when you headed up the mountain. Those on bicycles will also find the restaurant and great way to rest and refuel.
Stupid good, nice country atmosphere and excellent food.
While the food isn't gourmet and the coffee is second rate, the wait staff is friendly and efficient. They remain attentive no matter how busy and sometimes, the place does get busy as it's the only restaurant in the area. Considering the difficulty of running a restaurant that gets intermittent, seasonal traffic, this place is really good. Breakfast is good and they have vegetarian options on their menu for all meals. The prices are what you would expect for an off-the-beaten path restaurant. I suggest you frequent The Oaks and tip generously to keep this convenient watering hole in business. Update: The coffee has improved. It's now above average.
My sister drives by this cute little restaurant all the time from Big Bear, to work. She said she always wanted to eat there so we decided to stop on our way to Knott's Berry Farm. Best decision ever!!! Food was absolutely delicious!! The prices were amazing too. The inside was decorated cute and the waitress was very friendly. We definitely want to return again on our next vacation to California!! =)
The waitress was amazing she was so pleasant and helpful and had the cutest outfit on! Also the food was very good especially the shrimp tacos. A perfect place. Happy comforting energy for any mood!
I love the atmosphere of this family owned family restaurant. Their fish was fried perfectly, Cobb salad looked fantastic (but needs avocado), and they have house wine and domestic beer. It really is a great place to come with the family or come for a business meeting. There service was top notch! The new ownership has only been here for about 3 weeks and there are small things they can improve; like having a sauce with fish and chips, bringing out salad dressing with the salad (especially sense they home make most of their dressings: which is awesome), and making sure the beer is nice and cold.
Had tuna sandwich, tuna delicious, would have liked bread to be toasted a bit but overall, delicious and came with Frenchfries. My husband had their fish and chips. They were crispy and fresh. We also ordered their soup of the day which was their verison of chicken soup and the oregano and rice they added made it hearty and extremely tasteful. Their orange juice is real orange juice not orange punch!
Incredible food and ran by an incredible family!
Love this place nestled up in Angelus Oaks, the food is always great and the service is top notch. Had the bacon and eggs and it was perfect. I always stop here when I do a 4×4 action on the Jeep.
Amazing place to eat at!!! It's just so cozy and homely. The pricing is great and the hazelnut coffee is fantastic. I really wish I can dig this place out and take it back to Miami with me. Amazing food and attentive servers.
After riding the motorcycle for hours to get to a nearby campground I too was exhausted to cook anything. I didn't find anything interesting at the general store next door so I entered The Oaks and sat at the counter. The waitress cheerfully brought me a much-needed ice tea while I examined the menu. The menu was full of standard diner fare at decent prices and there were quite a few items I wanted to try but I just didn't have the appetite. I finally ordered a pizza to go and admired the rustic mountain cabin decor while I waited. The locals seated nearby were friendly and the waitress kept my tea filled too. I got the pizza back to the campground and the smell finally got to me. I was surprised at how good it was. Honestly, I was expecting a frozen pie heated up, not the tasty treat covered in fresh ingredients that I ended up with. I savored each slice while I watched the sunset and cuddled by the campfire. I can't wait to go back and explore more of their menu.
Awesome place! Got the Ham Steak and eggs while my girl got the two egg breakfast, everything was cooked perfectly! Hashbrowns were cooked perfectly and the staff was very friendly and accommodating! Highly recommend!
Drive by this place all the time assuming it was a tourist trap. We ended up leaving big bear later than expected and passed this right at lunch time so decided to stop. Food was good, our waitress hustled and prices were good. No complaints from me or my 3 kids. Will be back!
Had the pleasure of meeting Monica, the new owner. Being new to the area from out of state she made me feel very welcome. The food was delicious and they have a nice beer selection. I will definitely go back.
The food is great. The owners are super welcoming and friendly. Great little restaurant. Service is always outstanding. Monica is entertaining.
Cool little mountain restaurant with a new owner doing her best to make her customers Have a good time and enjoy good food. The owner was excited about farmers markets. It will soon be happening in her parking lot.
Everybody knows everybody there. Food is super consistent and they have the coldest beer on the mountain.
I stopped here for water on a bike tour because it seemed like a convenient spot. I was amazed to be greeted promptly by Theresa even though the restaurant was completely empty due to road closures. Despite only asking for water and information about the road closure, I was treated with warmth and care as if I had been dining there. I fear for businesses like this. I hope when 38 reopens you’ll give this place your business. They definitely deserve it!
Great breakfast. Service was great. Restaurant was clean and bathroom. Food was great...their side of fruit was amazing.
Great ride up! Few people when we rode in. Filled up before we left. Very good coffee. Service was excellent. Server was cute and personable. Food was quick and well seasoned. Really liked this place.
It was excellent. Fried chicken was great. Onion rings were great. Ranch dressing was incredible. Waitress was friendly. My only beef was when an older lady employee took a break, sat down with a couple guys, and talked so loud everyone in the restaurant had to listen to her problems.
Great food and good size portions. My favorite is the Philly cheesesteak sandwich. The pies are literally the best we have ever had. The service is excellent and the female owner is very personable. Great stop before or after we go up or down the mountain.
Every time I go up to big bear I tell myself I'm going to stop by. Not once have I done it in 10 years lol. Finally did.. Food was great. American food..I had breakfast. Pancakes, bacon, sausage, eggs and hash browns... if you like crispy food make sure you ask for it. Our waitress was very friendly and gave us great service. What I loved the most was the price. 44$ for 3 meals with drinks. And the place looks like a old cabin.
Fantastic owner who takes care of everyone. I was on the Line fire and they kept their business open all night to us to use their bathroom or grab coffee. I'll definitely be back to eat.
My family has been coming here for years. The food is consistently great and the service is outstanding. Most of all, everyone is very nice and super friendly. We have come for hot meals in the snow and refreshing meals in the heat. We have gotten food packed up to go to take back to our campsite and the orders have always been correct. We have never been disappointed and always look forward to our visits.
Great place! Super friendly waitress, killer onion rings, really good shrimp taco (only $3), and great chicken burrito made with real chunks of chicken (not canned). Great value, definitely recommend! Would make a special stop just for the onion rings! 😋
Visited this place with my son while on a 3 day survival course in the woods. Once the course was completed we were starving and the Oaks Restaurant hit the spot. Large servings for a good price and the food was delicious.
This was the only spot we saw to eat on our way up to Big Bear for snow day. We were so amazed at how good and flavorful all the food was. Made to order, nice and hot! We got the kids' chicken tenders and a burger. They devoured it all. We had the biscuits and gravy. My husband loved it and said the biscuits were very soft. I had the Huevos Mexicana and home fries with beans. Everything was seasoned very well and was amazing. My Dad had a chorizo and egg burrito that was too big to finish. We will definitely be visiting and before hitting the snow. The staff was very friendly and attentive. Great experience and even better food!
Great Food and Friendly Service! Our server was very busy and still didn't miss a beat. I had the BLT and my husband had the Beef Dip, we both had the delicious Onion Rings. We wanted dessert but we're way to full. We will stop on our way home from Big Bear for a slice of pie!
Great place to go if you are around. Friendly staff and will definitely come back!
We were passing through the area and stopped in around 8 AM for breakfast and it was very good. The omlete and big fluffy pancakes were very tasty. They had a cute self serve coffee bar. The service was very very friendly. I'd definitely stop through again if I ever found myself back in the area.

Amazing food and the bathrooms were very clean too
Monica and her team are amazing. They are always thankful you are there. The food is great and the service is too.
If you're looking for a casual dining experience that feels like home, look no further! This family owned gem truly stands out for both it's incredible food and its warm, welcoming atmosphere. From the moment you walk through the door, you're greeted with a smile and treated like part of the family. The food is absolutely amazing! Each dish is packed with flavor and clearly made with love and attention to detail. Whether you're in the mood for something comforting or want to try something new, their menu offers a delicious variety that's sure to impress. Plus, the service is top-notch. The staff is very attentive without being overbearing, making the whole experience feel personal and special. I can't recommend this place enough. It's truly a must try for anyone looking for great food and a family-friendly atmosphere on Highway 38!
Excellent food for a mountain town cafe. This will be a regular spot for us.
I've been to a lot of restaurants in life and this is by far the best one ever!! The food was honestly so good I couldn't stop eating it even when I was already full. Who would have thought the best best place to get fish tacos was in the mountains?!? But it is !! Absolutely loved them.. and the chile relleno plate was fantastic as well 😋. And the hospitality and environment are the very best 👌 we have definitely found our new favorite place.
My husband like to go and get the green chilaquiles with the carne asada and over-easy eggs. Super yummy.
Great day in camp Angelus Notches were great Cheesecake burger great Atmosphere great This place has been around a very long time. We were on the 23 mile garage sale travel. Thanks R AND K SOCAL.
A perfect place for breakfast, lunch or diner in the mountains Monica is really nice and the food is really good
Very good service, family vibe , very good food definitely recommend this place
Great food, great atmosphere, and GREAT service! Run by a small family, and they're the kindest people. The daughters are so sweet and excellent at their jobs! You can tell they take pride in what they do 🥰 the food was delicious - you have to try the homemade tortillas. We will definitely be returning soon!
They are very friendly and the food is great. The atmosphere is perfect. Not too big, not too small, and good lighting. The fries are perfection. They are open to input as well. The best part is when you are a regular or semi regular. They know you and your order and you can sit and do work, relax, etc.
This place is awesome. Monica is super friendly as well as her girls. And the food, home cooking away from home. Absolutely our new spot.
My wife, daughter and I stopped here for a quick bite and were blown away by the freshness, flavor and service!
By far one of the best chile verde I've had. Monica is the owner and was our server. When we ordered you could tell she was passionate about her food and especially her chile verde. We ordered the chile verde burrito and it was large and smothered in verde sauce and crema. The tortillas were homemade thick and fresh. Monica was super friendly and talkative. The food was hot, fresh, and delicious. We drive 45 minutes to eat here and is well worth the drive. Been here twice in two weeks and definitely coming back.
Finally stopped here (December 30th 2024) for the first time and was not disappointed. The food was amazing and Monica was very friendly and informative. Best customer service we’ve had anywhere in a while. We definitely will be back.
Made a stop here riding through the mountains. Great food. I had a Chile verde omelette with hand made flour tortillas. It's a nice family that runs it and made me feel at home. Can't wait to return.
Had take out for dinner on a Saturday night and breakfast the following Sunday. We had the onion rings, chicken fried steak and the carne asada tacos. I also had the pancakes and eggs and hash browns. Everything was excellent. Hash Browns were nice and crispy. Onion rings very tasty. Service was good as can be.
Had the cheese enchiladas meal. It was good 👍. Great service and atmosphere. Highly recommend!

Outstanding! Stopped for lunch during a family vacation and Monica served us a fantastic meal prepared by Joel, highly recommend!
It's the best place it's the best place I ate since I was a little kid since I was 9 years old and it hasn't changed it's still beautiful the food is good and I give it seven times up I loved it my opinion 7 Stars
Monica who owns The Oaks Restaurant is very nice and super friendly. Everyone takes great pride and they serve very good food. If you went there when it was the old owners, you might not of been treated that good. Or remember their blah non-caring attitude. Things have changed for the better. The food is always really good, prepared by Joel, the master chef, and the prices are reasonable for the mountains. They have a special for tacos on Tuesdays, and beef ribs with Monica's cornbread and potato on Thursdays. They even have great burgers, pizza and steaks, Very clean, newly upholstered seats, and 5 new t.v.'s. You can get your food to go, also. It is a very relaxing and a super friendly type of place.
Wonderful local Angeles Oaks restaurant. Great place to stop after hiking. The quesadilla was excellent. Great service too. We will be back.
This place was great. Everyone was very nice and welcoming. The food was very good, my 7 yr old is picky about her food and she finished all her food. Will definitely be coming back and bringing more family with us!
A small group of 3 of us had a WONDERFUL Chile 🌶️ Relleno breakfast and Absolutely LOVED IT ! One of the BEST Chile 🌶️ Relleno's I've had in years. We had Fast and Friendly service from the owner, who was a Delight ! The food was Hot and Fresh, every you would want from a quality meal. Please Support this Wonderful Restaurant especially if your in the mood for Delicious Mexican 🌮🌯 Food 🥑 You'll be so glad you choose The Oaks Restaurant in Angelus Oaks Ca.
You know, we always come up here on the way to hiking in the mountains with our dogs and it’s such a great pit stop. The food is great, the owner is so friendly and nice, and it’s so low key. Can’t go wrong here.
The Oaks restaurant has been under new ownership / management for some time now and it has been a massive improvement. The newest owners Monica and Joel are a great team. Monica maintains the front of house with enthusiasm, energy and a great smile. Joel is doing a fantastic job in the kitchen, bringing home cooked comfort food to his diners. Tip: Try the House Made Chile Verde plate with the HAND MADE FLOUR TORTILLAS!
Had the teriyaki burger and zucchini fries and cornbread - each one was delicious. Our waiter, also an owner, exuded genuine happiness and warmth. There’s something special about this place. Can’t wait to come back. Next time getting the chile verde!!
Totally recommend if on your way. Had the chile verde plate. Tasted great! Heads up, a bit spicy but super tasty. Prices are quite reasonable for being so far up the mountain and isolated. Small and quaint, but definitely can tell they get a local crowd rush.

Server was very nice and friendly. I got the Carne Asada burrito. It was pretty good but wish it had some sour cream or cheese in it. Was more of a traditional style burrito. The Mexican rice was very very good and reminded me of my grandmas cooking. My friends all enjoyed their meals. Will come here again if I pass through.
Small gem in the Big bear mountains. Good warm food and generous portions. Catch a bite before you head up or on your way down before you hit the road. We went there on a snowy day and were thankful for the food and the bottomless coffee.
Considering the options nearby (none in terms of other restaurants) it's a fine place to have a meal. Really decent place for food if you are on your way up or down the hill. Don't hesitate to stop when you are hungry because if you are going up its a long wait and plus wouldn't you like to have something other than fast food? Super nice people good comfort food. Retro vibe for sure.
Would've given them 5 stars but they had undercooked chicken we ordered... truly disappointing from otherwise great place in Angelus Oaks. Edited: chicken thing happened this Sun, around 2pm, party of 2 adults and 5 kids. We ate here before and had recommended the place to our friend, whose kid got that unfortunate chicken.
-The pizza is frozen pizza. -The French fries tasted like fried fish. -Another member of our group sent his "buffalo boneless wings" back. -bad coffee too. -THE PIE IS GREAT! I probably wouldn't come back.
Super friendly staff. Love the atmosphere and decor, as always. Food was so good, warmed our belly's before playing in the mountains. The whole restaurant being open now brightened things up quite a bit making it feel so much more inviting.
Good Comfort Food in the Mountains. The service and food was good. We had a good breakfast with plenty of food. The 3 waitresses we're excellent. The exterior and interior is old but the food and the service is good. They just bought the store next door. If your coming down from Big Bear stop in for a quick meal.
Food was okay, basic road side diner, nothing to write home about, bacon was very thick on hamburger almost like ham. For being the only restaurant in 30 miles, decent prices, they won't rob you on the bill.
When we go camping at San Gorgonio Campground we usually stopped at a Corona restaurant but they closed down. So we decided to stop here instead since it's close and on the way. Let me tell you I was surprised why I never stopped here before. Now ANYTIME we visit the area this will be a mandatory stop! Food is great, everyone that works there is wonderful. I noticed they know all the regulars by name and what they order. We stopped by when we arrived for camping and stopped by again when we left from our camping trip. Highly recommend.
There was a lot of traffic on 38. Luckily the restaurant was on our way down so we stopped by for dinner. My husband had the cheese burger and I had breakfast. He enjoyed a beer while I enjoyed a Cabernet Sauvignon. The food was decent decent and at least a hot meal. I asked for extra crispy hash browns and it was not. It would've been tastier if it were more crispy. I would still stop by and enjoy a warm meal off of 38 in the future, especially if I am hungry.

Cool place, but my omelette was not good. Jalapenos obviously canned/pickled and very salty, cheese was separating... Look folks, jalapenos are cheap so get some fresh ones and slice/grill them in the bacon grease and they will taste awesome. Shred the cheese. Service was good and friendly. EDIT: The owner responded almost immediately as you can see below. For that reason alone I am adding a star to my original rating because it means they truly care. As far as the cheese goes, it was sliced cheddar, not shredded and... eh... I will eat there again, anyone can have an off day.
Don't order the omelette. Overcooked with toppings mixed into eggs. Small amount of shredded cheese on top. If I hadn't been so hungry I would have sent back. This place could be a gold mine if some effort was put in or the cook loved to cook.
Food, just OK. Prices average. Service poor. Some Lights not working, detracted from the atmosphere. ///EDIT 11-6-22: There appeared to be just one waiter covering the entire area, which was like two dining rooms, thus they could not move fast enough and food took a long time to be readied and served. Also: The waiter had seated us in sort of a dark area away from the windows and I suggested they turn on the rest of the lights. They turned a switch but some lights were still off during the rest of our visit. Not a bad restaurant, but nothing exciting.
Extra long wait times, average food quality. Spent almost 2 hours for a party of two, I wouldn’t return due to wait time for just average food. Overall 2.5 stars
Its alright. Maybe a bit pricey. I do like though very much that with your burger or sandwich you have a choice fries, onion rings , fried zucchini or mozzarella sticks.
I came in on Saturday, 2/21/26, around 11am. The food was pretty average, but I didn’t make a big deal out of it since the place seemed understaffed. What really bothered me was the overall experience. I ordered the 2-egg breakfast with bacon, hashbrowns, and coffee. My coffee was never refilled, and no one checked in on me. The bacon was stale and floppy. My total should have been around $14, but when I checked my credit card statement later, I was charged an additional $10, bringing it to $24. That’s unacceptable. I was patient with the staff and tried not to be a bother, but being overcharged on top of mediocre service and food is frustrating. The owner should consider scheduling more staff during busy times to avoid situations like this.
Waited patiently to be served, they finally took our order after 20 plus minutes, others came in after us and got their food before we did. When we asked when our food would be ready, we were told it’ll be another ten minutes or so. Everyone that came in after us was seated, served, and checked on while we were still waiting. It doesn’t take half an hour for scrambled eggs and pancakes.
Went there today. Never even got eye contact or any acknowledgement that I was there. Nothing!!! I know they were short on help. But a simple hello & we will be with you soon would have been nice. Been there many times over years. Always great food & service. I’m a bit unhappy today. Unbelievable to be completely ignored. Waiting at a table for over 30 minutes. They just walked by without saying or even looking at us. Weird???
We arrived at 5pm and waited to be seated. There was three waitress, one was attending to costumers and the other two were standing talking to each other. The group in front of us was then seated. There were alot of tables still covered with leftover breakfast plates. I guess it was busy before we got there. We were seated shortly after. After a few minutes it was just two groups of family in the whole cafe, including us. We ordered and waited 30 minutes for our food. My husband had to get up and tell the waitress that was chatting with another waitress (which appeared to be on break) that our food was ready. She looked at the counter and grabbed the food. She said they were just waiting on the pizza, but the food was sitting there for a good 10 minutes. They should know to make the pizza first. Anyways, our food was cold. It was okay in flavor, but just cold. Plus, they forgot my husband's drink. The staff was slow and didnt apologize for their service. I do not recommend this place, not worth it. Stuff should never be seating over talking it's not professional. Plu they told us they threw out the pasta because it got bad, which is way too much information. Oh they had no more Coronas because of the busy weekend. Anyways this place is an hour away from our house, so the drive is not worth it. Better drive up more and just go to big bear.
Rode up the hill for breakfast to find they have new owners now have a B rating plus charging 50 cents PER EGG. I was hungry so I figured fried zucchini would be safe to eat since it has to be fried at high temps and less chance of getting sick. Boy was I wrong, the zucchini was dripping water and oil. They used frozen zucchini and didn't cook them all the way so they were falling apart and dripping. The ranch had a strange taste to it. I only ate 1 zucchini and now I'm feeling sick to my stomach. This place use to be packed with customers and now it's empty, from the food and service I can see why. My husband ordered French toast because it use to be amazing made with Texas today, now it's small thin soggy pieces. The new ownership has ruined what use to be a good place to eat.
Wanted to stop by there before I hit the Thomas hunting grounds trail since I had heard really good things about this place but when I arrived an hour after they were supposed to be open the woman behind the counter said they were closed and will probably stay closed due to tidying up. That was a little disappointing, a sign outside said under new management not sure if that has something to do with it.
