Incredible Modern Japanese Treats – A Must-Visit for Unique Flavors! I highly recommend Sugar Pine for anyone looking for exceptional modern Japanese desserts and cuisine. Their ice cream is a total standout because they develop all their own unique flavors. You won't find the typical options here; instead, they offer creative combinations like Miso Caramel and White Chocolate Thai Tea, both of which are absolutely delicious and perfectly balanced. Besides the sweets, I’ve also tried their hot food, and the Tonkatsu (fried pork cutlet) is definitely above average—crispy, tender, and very satisfying. The interior design is very modern, bright, and impeccably clean, making it a great spot to hang out or grab a quick meal. If you enjoy exploring contemporary Japanese dishes with a creative twist, this place is a gem. It’s clear that they put a lot of heart into their recipes and the overall atmosphere. I will definitely be coming back to see what new flavors they come up with next!
I had such a nice meal here today! It was my first visit and Stef was SO helpful and gave me the BEST recommendations! I got two Onigiri 🍙 to-go which I can't wait to try!! And I had a bowl of pan fried udon noodles with vegetables and tofu! 😋 oh my gosh! The vegetables were so bright and beautiful and the flavor was great! The atmosphere was so perfectly relaxing. Thank you again Stef!
Excellent food and drinks, polit staff, cute atmosphere. I went with a friend, we got the matcha limeade and iced jasmine green tea for drinks and we got 3 pieces of onigiri each. He ordered(left to right far plates) the avocado, kimchi chicken, and steak- the avocado was his favorite. I ordered (left to right close plates) spicy tuna, steak, and salmon. The salmon was amazing. Spicy tuna had a lot more heat than expected but was fantastic for it, steak was decent, but didn't wow me comparitively. All plates came with really tasty carrots that were cut into stars and pickles. Unfortunately we were too full to try the ice cream this time around but absolutely plan to return!
Sugar Pine commands the attention of any discerning diner. I seldom take to reviews, yet the exemplary quality of both cuisine and ambiance here compels me to share my experience. While it may lean towards the pricier side, this establishment delivers an unparalleled gastronomic experience intertwined with an aesthetic that transcends mere decor. The term "aesthetic" extends beyond the visual appeal of the interior to the artful presentation of the food itself. The crisp seaweed salad, juxtaposed with perfectly pickled vegetables, creates a delightful prelude to the exquisitely assembled salmon onigiri and the tender yet delectably crispy pork katsu. Every dish is a testament to culinary finesse, with each element meticulously crafted to perfection. Beyond the culinary artistry, the service exemplifies warmth and attentiveness, enhancing the overall experience. The interior space is a harmonious blend of elegance and comfort, offering a visually pleasing backdrop to the culinary journey. Sugar Pine is a rare gem, worthy of its cost. I wholeheartedly recommend that everyone indulge in this experience at least once. It is an oasis of culinary and aesthetic delight that leaves an indelible impression.
Looking for a feast? Sugar Pine has lots to choose from. I had the chicken katsu curry with a seaweed salad, pickled vegetables, miso soup, and a bowl of rice. It was so delicious. My friend let me try some of his fried wings and man, those were fire. Not pictured is the dessert. I got a small cup of taro ice cream. So good. Great place to grab dinner with friends. Highly recommend this place!
This place is *legit*! Seriously, for a taste of Japan - as it is *today*, not the americanized version - this is is where you want to come to. It's kinda izakaya-ish, in the sense that there's a whole bunch of random foods (all excellent!) available, you can happily nosh through a variety of things all the while working your way through their excellent beer/wine/sake/drinks selection. Did I mention that the food is excellent? 'cos it is! All of it! BTW, the character changes somewhat dramatically from a "quick lunch place" to a "hang out and chill in the evening place"...
This is a great, cute, airy spot to go hang out with my girlfriends: lunch, dinner, or even just ice cream and coffee. The food portions are light and manageable (and delicious). They have beer on tap. Prices are reasonable. The ice cream flavors delight. And the ambience is really cute. There is some outdoor seating, but I’ve never used it.
Such a lovely place to come to, that’s simply how I feel about Sugar Pine! I feel it once I step in — the wood tables and bright yellow chairs, the little potted plants. I’ve enjoyed every meal, cooked and served with such attention to detail — a feast for the eyes and the tummy. And oooh the desserts!!! 💕‘Nuff said :-)
Chill place. Came here for mango sorbet. Unfortunately, it is a seasonal item (I visited in August). I was allowed to try as many ice creams and sorbet samples as I wanted. Ended up with a scoop each of Watermelon thai basil sorbet and white chocolate thai tea ice cream. Both were a departure from usual frozen treats, but delicious. Soothing from the Spicy Szechuan pepper laden mapo tofo I enjoyed across 183. It's counter order (like an ice cream parlor). Rail seating and tables. Swlf serve filtered water to drink. The lady who served me was very friendly.
A lovely place to stop and get something to eat. Relaxed and modern vibe inside, a very photogenic appeal. They offer small plates or full dishes, as well as a good beverage selection. Ranging from wine & beer to café beverages. Also, have ice cream. My boyfriend and I both got onigiri which was super yummy. We’ll definitely be coming back.
We came in for icecreams and they have a limited selection. We sampled most of them and they were all amazing. If you are looking for some different flavored ice creams, this is the place. The place has a beautiful hip vibe. We got the coconut icecream on a cone and miso caramel in cup. The coconut icecream was so flavorful with delicious chewy ribbons of coconut pieces and the salty crispy cone was perfect with the icecream. It was our favorite. We loved the miso caramel too, salty and sweet.
Pork Katsu and Onigiri are amazeballs. Very well executed. Pork was crunch and moist. Sauce lightly drizzled and sides complimented it quite well. Overall definitely feels pricey and out of place given the locale but the atmosphere is just so beautiful. Hard to find a place this pretty.
Steak onigiri was great Chicken onigiri, chicken wings and sweet potato fries were all good White chocolate Thai tea, matcha green tea and coffee porter ice creams were all good as well. Thai Thai and matcha were both very sweet. I wasn't a huge fan of the chocolate chips in the coffee porter ice cream 8.5/10
Sugar pine truly feels like a local small business. They have a unique twist on traditional Japanese food, and this is pretty much the only place where you can find a good quality, well priced, bento box type meal. Prices were great, food was delicious and fresh, service was really good and everything came out quickly. Everyone is very friendly. I’ve already been twice but I will be coming here often!
Been here a couple of times and it’s always a pleasant experience. The ambiance was chill and quaint. The staff was very welcoming and kind. I got two salmon onigiri which were pretty delicious. If I could change one thing about it, it would probably be the sweetness of the rice. It was a bit too sweet for my liking, but it did balance the saltiness of the salmon which was nice. The sweet potato fries were super good! Very hot, crunchy on the outside, and soft on the inside. It was served alongside a delicious yuzu dip. The citrus from the sauce complimented the fries very well. A nice place to go during your lunch break or to hang out with friends.
Been here on several occasions, the Katsu Pork Set never disappoints. The pork is thick and juicy, unlike other establishments where they flatten it thinly to make the portion seem larger and sacrifice taste. The Spicy Tofu Onigiri is to die for. It’s a numbing type of spicy. The onigiris were also great. The presentation is beautiful and the taste is on par.
Loved the chill ambiance, great happy hour food and mead ($2 off small plates and most alcohol). Also had the homemade ice cream. I chose black sesame and celis coffee porter chocolate chip and i added candied orange peel. The music was serene and contributed to the magical feel. Will definitely return. They have a mini macaron trio for $7, that i want to try. This place used to be a Dunkin Donuts so it's on the smaller side however reminds me of what i would find in NYC -- just the right amount of approach chic.
Wonderful place! Amazing customer service! Amazing staff. Beautifully played meals. And the flavors...OMG the flavors are pleasing to the palette let me tell you. The atmosphere is relaxing and welcoming. Love, love, love! Definitely one of my top picks. I had the Katsu chicken with Curry. The matcha tea latte paired well with the sugar pine nut cookie. Also tried all of the variety of ice creams they had 😋. Loves them all but went with the watermelon Thai basil and the miso caramel. Don't miss out on a fabolous food journey!
Delightful spot to dine on yummy snacks, lunch, dinner and/or satisfy your sweet tooth. The Onigiri were the highlight of our visit. They have ample filling and an enjoyable outer layer of complimenting flavoring. The ice cream was rich and flavorful. They are very thoughtful with their topping presentation.
Great value for the price - a must try. The fish and chips and chicken karaage were my favorites and were delicious and surprising. The soba noodles were good as well. The ume shiso and spicy tuna onigiri were flavorful but a bit difficult to eat and the rice was a little too sticky for my taste. We didn't have time (or available real estate in our bellies) to try the ice cream or pastries but they looked great, especially the peach galette. Good selection of draft beer and wine. Overall, Sugar Pine is a clean, comfortable place with friendly service and good food that far exceeds expectations at a modest price point. They're just getting started and I'm excited to watch them continue to develop!
Amazing food for great value! Order at the bar and they bring it to you. Lots of entree and small plates options. They have ice cream, mochi, cakes, and macarons for dessert too. The staff was very nice, and there was a good amount of space inside. Decent amount of parking in front. Definitely need to go back soon!
Service was friendly and kind, we got the spicy tofu onigiri which was bomb. Perfect spice level for me at a 7/10 though I could see how this might be too spicy for some. We also got a scoop of taro ice cream which tasted like a saltier version of the milk tea flavor. It was amazing and the texture on the ice cream was perfect. All in all a great experience, can’t wait to come back!
This place has such a great interior and wonderfully decorated! But the look was not only thing great there but also the onigiri and ice cream! Interesting and delicious flavors and they were really nice. It’s hard to find a place that sells good onigiri in Texas so this would the place I really recommend.
I love it here! I came with a friend, it was our first time. The staff was super helpful with helping us decide what to order. The food was delicious and came out quickly. The parking lot was on the smaller side but I got a spot. There was plenty of seating. I believe they had a happy hour 4-6 or something like that during the weekdays, so I got $2 off my drink.
I had dinner across the street I was looking for something sweet so I stop by here this ice cream is excellent stop by check it out. judge for yourself They let you taste all the ice cream!!!! So you're definitely making the right choice. I will be back to check out the dinner menu
Went for the first time and loved it! This place is super cozy and hits the spot if you're craving Japanese food. You can pay at the counter before getting your food and there's some parking at the front of the restaurant. We tried the salmon onigiri (very impressed with the amount of salmon), chicken karaage, Katsu pork and the gyoza and all were delicious!
A good Japanese restaurant! Very quiet and beautiful place. We decided to order a couple of small plates and a few onigiri. We were served very quickly, and we waited for our food around 10-15 minutes. Karaage and Tempura Shrimp were good, and sauces perfectly tasted with them. You can find here a wide selection of Onigiri, and I would like to note that there are quite a lot of onigiri without fish or meat. We tried Salmon, Spicy Tuna and Kimchi/Chicken Onigiri. And I liked the most Kimchi/Chicken Onigiri.
Great spot for a quick dinner - their design is on point. Love the simplicity and ambience of the place. We will be back to try out the other menu items. Loved the katsu curry and the onigiri though the curry was light and not thick like the other places. Appreciate the plating and presentation. The service was fast enough though the place is understaffed. Plenty of parking out front.
Wow! What an amazing restaurant! The food was incredible! I had the Miso with chicken, and I was so impressed! I was with four other people, and they all raved about their meals. The service was fantastic, too! One of my friends kept asking for things, and the server (whom I think might have been the owner) was so gracious with her, bringing her everything she wanted. They were all so sweet! And the place is adorable! There's not a lot of seating, so make sure you have a place to sit before you order your food. But they have a lovely nock where you can hide away and eat in peace. The music was perfect, not too loud, and I loved how the lights were dim. It felt so chill. I would love yo go back!
Cute little restaurant/ice cream shop that has Asian fusion entrees and appetizers. Me and a friend got fish n chips, spicy tuna onigiri, tofu yakisoba, salmon onigiri, and we added black sesame ice cream with toasted coconut flakes and coconut ice cream. This place is quiet, cute, has nice ambiance. Surprisingly empty on a weekday night but people started rolling in the late hours before closing time. The food is really good and came out very hot and fresh. The onigiri were tasty and savory, I would definitely get them again. The black sesame ice cream is unique and toasty. Overall, pretty pricey but based on quality, taste, and exceptional service—it is well worth it. Enjoy!
I just got back to the US after living in Japan for 8 years. I was starting to get home sick and decided to try this place. I was happily surprised at all the awesome, authentic flavors. Even the onigiri wrapping reminds me of 7/11 awesomeness. I will be coming back for more. This food is already a favorite of mine. Thank you for the incredible food.
Previous menu prices were much cheaper, but Sugar Pine is definitely worth your money! I ordered a chicken katsu curry and literally gobbled up that food like a starving mongrel. The curry didn't really taste like curry but still delicious. Very large portions and very yummy! Definitely recommend and will come back in the future.
I don’t know how I haven’t heard of this place earlier! This cafe/bar/restaurant has it all: onigiri, wine, sake, udon, food, coffee, your one stop shop for any eats. Staff was attentive and kind and the line moved quickly. Despite them having coffee the shop doesn’t open until 12 noon everyday! Tried their chicken onigiri (chopped up chicken karaage inside) and the spicy salmon. They have great rice flavorings and furikake on the onigiri rice. Nothing to top it off like a matcha latte! The unsweetened was perfect to taste the full matcha flavor. Decor was mad cute, there’s this grass wall by the restroom and plenty of amazing natural light. Great spot for happy hour or a little afternoon studying/working.
Such a great place with delicious and inexpensive Japanese dishes. The ice cream is really creamy and they even have matcha cones! We had someone in the group with an allergy and the staff was very thorough about double checking with the kitchen and helped us navigate the menu. Great all around experience!
I went for lunch on a weekday. The ambience is cool, chill, and modern. The staff was very friendly. I had udon noodles, matcha limeade, and black sesame ice cream. All of the food was tasty.
I mean, I’ve been here 3 times now and ordered 3 different things and have loved them all. This last time was definitely my favorite!! I ordered the Onigiri rice balls; kimchi tofu and the spicy tuna. Also got the spicy edamame and it was SO good!! Oh, and the iced green jasmine tea so delicious as well.
Japanese Fusion Restaurant. Order at the counter, food delivered to table. Lovely ambience and decor. Nice staff. Easy access with lots of parking available. Dishes were presented with a lot of love and pride. - Chicken Karaage was excellent- deep fried to perfection with a hint of curry. - Oniri (Rice rolls) was not bad but I would dispute the claims that they are the best outside of Japan. - sesame ice cream was very nice and indeed a rare find outside of Asia. A bit less salt would be nice. - matcha ice cream was not okay. Salt and sugar drowned out the delicate matchup flavors. - Spicy Soup Udon was tasty as a fusion dish. Udon was perfectly cooked with the right textures. Soup was tasty.
Our go to place to hang out on weekends! This place has literally everything - from food, to beer, wine, cocktails, WiFi to work and not to mention - ice cream! Great little place to work or catch up with friends and get something light to eat . They have a cute patio as well and parking has never been a problem . Their onigiris are great, especially the spicy tofu one :) their small plates, set dishes are all great - we like the gyoza and also katsu dishes are delish! Their recent addition - spicy miso udon has become our favorite :) and with ice cream - they have a whole lot of amazing flavors from taro to green tea! If you haven’t been here already, it’s worth going once . Service is always great and they welcome customers with a sweet smile as always!
Such a great first experience for dinner. The staff were super helpful and friendly. We had the shrimp and squid yakisoba stir fry which was very tasty and the seafood was perfectly cooked. The sauce with the karaage was surprisingly delightful and the chicken was light and flavorful. The salt and pepper tofu was my mom's favorite and the onigiri were all super tasty. I didn't think i would have room for dessert, but i ended up getting the white chocolate Thai tea ice cream that was perfectly balanced and a nice end to the meal. I wish I would've taken more pictures but it was too irresistable. Overall, will be back to try more things!
This is my favorite $$ casual Japanese family-style restaurant in Austin!! Their onigiris are THE BEST and my favorite goes to the spicy tofu onigiris!! The restaurant is super clean and cozy - I love to dine in as well! They also serve free lemon water, which is great on summer days. For entrees, my top two are the steak set and the chicken yaki udon. Both are super delicious and I can literally eat their everyday! If you’re also looking to get some appetizers, I recommend chicken karaage (their dipping mayo is superb) and soba with Yuzu flavor. Staff are sweet and friendly. One time I accidentally spilled the soup and they rushed over to help me clean up and reorganized my food. 💯
I Iiked the pork Katsu with curry. the ambiance was really nice and the menu was really good for a small shop. I'd come back if I'm in the neighborhood. I also enjoyed the ice cream. i had taro and coconut. I was also surprised to see that they had a good selection of sake and Japanese beers.
Sugar Pine is such a hidden gem and deserves to be way more popular. It’s a regular spot for us because everything on the menu is delicious, the service is fantastic, and the ambiance is the perfect balance of casual but still intimate and lovely.
I think characterizing this place as primarily a dessert shop is doing a huge disservice - we have been three times within the past week 😅 because the onigiri, appetizers, and bento were so on-point and reasonably priced! Everything we have tried, from coffee, curated beers, to the ice cream with homemade toppings have been delicious and unique. The space is charming but feels like it is still figuring out its identity - in any case I am thrilled to have more excellent Japanese food right in my neighborhood!
This place is so low-key but I love it so much. Handcrafted Japanese food for around $16 -- about what fast food joints are charging for a combo nowadays, and the food at Sugar Pine is FAR above the fast food level. It's a little hard to find, kinda hidden under I-35 opposite the Target. But I'll always go out of my way to eat here. (The only reason I didn't give it a perfect 5 stars for atmosphere is just that it's super low-key, lol)
The food was very tasty. My husband had the udon noodle dish with tofu and we would highly recommend that dish. I had the onigiri - it was also good, and the spicy edamame. We got chai ice cream to go. They staff were very nice and friendly and the restaurant was cute.
I come here weekly on a date with my husband. We love the udon soup and salt and pepper tofu. They have some good vegetarian options, and a nice selection of beers on tap, as well as a few good non alcoholic beverage options. Make sure you save room for ice cream! I recommend the salted caramel miso.
Husband and I love this place! Excellent food, staff is friendly, and the restaurant is quiet. The ice cream is a must-have - they seem to have dairy free options. My husband loves the matcha lemonade and our go-to order is the pork katsu - so, so tasty!
Super cute spot on the north side, pleasantly surprised. Ordered the spicy udon seafood soup, broth had depth, loved the addition of veggies that accompanied the shrimp and squid. Could be spicier, ~1 spice level. Chicken Katsu curry was delicious, lots of sides to explore and the honey lemonade was delish. Will go back to try the desserts!
The chicken katsu with curry was perfectly crispy and the garlic steak was tender and rich with umami. Their set meals include a gluten-free pine nut cookie—deliciously chewy and a nice finishing touch. Plating was cute, and their interior is well decorated. A solid spot for a satisfying Japanese dinner!
My son enjoyed the chicken karaage so much he ordered seconds. We did a google search for chicken karaage and decided to try Sugar Pine. We were pleasantly surprised with the feel and laid back atmosphere of the restaurant with modern art and light mixture of live plants cleverly placed throughout the restaurant. We were received by polite and helpful wait persons, whom of all had very welcoming smiles. The place had an impressive collection of options and dishes to choose from. But we showed up specifically for the Chicken Karaage. Oh My Stars --- what a treat. The chicken was fried to perfection. Very nice and tender, just the right amount of consistency to show care and attention was put into its preparation. in combination with the sides; everything complimented the entire dish.... from the jasmine rice to the cookie. You will find these dishes to be undeniably delicious. Sean A - Buda TX
Sugar pine is a frequent stop while in Austin! Finding spots that truly embody culture through food is a challenge but I feel that sugar pine does a great job! I can confidently confirm that everything on the menu is delicious, we see people of all ages and backgrounds dine here often!
Love coming here for the food, but especially for the ice cream! Miso caramel is by far my favorite flavor I've tried (always forget to take a picture until I've I already taken a bite), and you can order pints to take home, as well! They even give you an insulated bag to carry it home in. Other favorites are the chicken karaage and matcha limeade.
It was such a good place. It was small and cute. Their ice green matcha was excellent. Even if they have a small menu it was delicious. I liked their ice creams too, seems premium. Trust me this place won’t let you down. It’s a good place to talk with friends. Read a book and also a good spot to do some assignments. But I won’t bring huge crowd with you here.
Fantastic establishment for unique ice cream, incredible onigiri, and if you have the time for a meal their sets are on point! The wife and I have frequented this plane for their top tier onigiri for over a year, but now we need to keep coming back and trying all their additional meal options! Definitely worth trying out if you're in the area!
Came in at lunch time, it was dead which was weird because the place was SHARP. Cleanest Japanese place I’ve been to in a while. I think the person working was an owner or manager because she was also charismatic and totally on top of things. Got the chicken curry katsu and it came with a ton of stuff. All of which was meticulously presented and tasted amazing. It looked as well presented as something you’d see in a photoshoot or something. Also got a cold brew which tasted good and not acidic or anything. This place needs more marketing or something because it’s doing everything right. Definitely want to try some of their ice creams or onigiri next time I come. The owners definitely really care about the image of this place and I’ll be telling friends about this one. Don’t usually give out 100% 5 stars but this place deserves that. One note: I wouldn’t have guessed from the sign that it was a full service Japanese place. Comes off just a random dessert place. Since they’re right across from an Asian shopping center maybe it’d help to do more on that front? But maybe they’re happy with what they’re doing and that’s fine too of course! Edit: the woman working even ran out to my car to give me my AirPods case back mere seconds after I left, she is absolutely nailing it. Wish I got her name but it seems she’s the one in a lot of the pictures on here.
We went to Sugar Pine just out of curiosity and it did not disappoint! We tried the White Chocolate Thai Tea ice cream as well as the Black Sesame! They were amazing. They also had other unique flavors like Watermelon Basil and Taro Root. We also ordered a small serving of the Chicken Karaage and it was super tasty. Happy hour is everyday 3-6pm and it’s $2 off from small plates and some beers. It’s totally worth checking out!
Counter service spot with everything from ice cream to soup, coffee to beer, and surprises in between. I would never have guessed they were an Asian inspired spot if I hadn’t been searching for udon. The Onigiri was delicious! It’s made fresh to order and my one to go was great the next morning! The chicken udon included too many ingredients for what I was in the mood for (more like ramen dish than simple udon), but was still great. We will come back, for sure.
We finally decided to check this place out, after driving pass it a few times. The plants really add to the decor and gave it a relaxing atmosphere. I decided to try the kaarage set and my boyfriend got the katsu chicken curry set. The miso tasted to diluted, the salad dressing was to light, and the curry sauce did not have enough flavor. We really enjoyed the kaarage and the salmon onigiri. The katsu chicken was crispy and pretty tasty. For dessert, I ended up getting the black seasame, but I did not like the flavor to much. My boyfriend enjoyed the watermelon thai basil sorbet. We hope to go back again to try more of their desserts and food.
The onigiri here was so delicious, though I personally prefer raw fish in mine. The spicy tuna was a bit too spicy, even for someone who usually enjoys heat, so I’d probably skip that next time. One thing I noticed was a strong chlorine smell in the restaurant, which took away from the overall dining experience. That said, the food quality was great, and I’d still come back to try other flavors.
I wanted to try something new that wasn't a franchise and Sugar Pine was a nice choice. They have a lot of Japanese small plate and dinner choices and a nice assortment of ice cream flavors. I ordered the chicken Karage small plate with an espresso shot and everything was delicious. Service was ok. One lady was very nice and gave me some good info on the place, but one guy at the register didn't seem like he wanted to be there. Overall, was a very nice place with a hip atmosphere and I would definitely come back. *4/5 stars*
We were looking for iced coffee and stumbled upon this cute spot. It may not look like much on the outside but it is very modern and comfortable inside. They have soft comfortable chairs that feel like you're in someone's living room. The decor makes it for a cute date spot or just catching up with a friend. They have small snacks, ice cream, homemade waffle comes, beer, wine and various sake. Staff were very friendly and helpful.
Chicken katsu was very juicy but the curry was a bit bland. The karrage was tough, we had to use our hands to bite off pieces of it. The fish and chips did not taste fresh but the batter was nice and crispy. We loved the sesame ice cream. We liked the decor, good for small groups and dates.
Adorable little spot. The atmosphere is just lovely, with comfy blue velvet chairs, little succulents scattered around, and great music playing. Food: tried the fried tofu, katsu pork, house fries, and chicken gyoza. Everything was so yummy. My only complaint was that the tofu was soft. I prefer extra firm when eating fried tofu, but that's a personal preference.
From the founder of Coco’s is this cute Japanese-inspired shop that serves onigiri, chicken karage, katsu, set dishes, and many other items. I particularly like the onigiris. I think they have good flavor and the stuffing inside is pretty generous. The trade off of generous stuffing is a fragile rice compacted to hold it together. Not a big deal for me. I just grab a fork to eat the rest. The chicken karage is really nicely prepared. Crispy on the outside, not greasy, tender chicken on the inside. We got some unique ice cream flavors after also. I’m particularly happy that they supported my son’s school with a spirit night. Hopefully that was a good experience for them. We packed the place on a rainy day!
I LOVE their spicy miso udon seafood. Everything just goes so well together. It’s not that spicy to me but has great flavoring with shrimps, calamari, and salmon inside. I love the sweet pumpkin, mushroom and bok choy that goes inside. Their ice cream, pine nut cookie, matcha limeade, spicy are really good too! You must try their match waffle cone. I can definitely taste the matcha in them. I also enjoyed their salt and pepper tofu and tuna onigri (cooked). Their chicken curry Katsu and regular Katsu are decent but I think the meat itself can be more flavorful especially for that price. The steak onigri barely had any meat inside. Otherwise, the service is always great! They also have wifi too for work and studying.
Everything was decent but the main feature could be improved significantly. The pork katsu was a bit dry on the inside, didn't have much flavor in the breading (some places make their own in-house and it is great, maybe mixing some coconut flakes into it would help?) and the Asian coleslaw could use some work... Mix things together and more flavor. Worth it for the miso ice cream though if you want something unique for a dessert, I didn't get mine with the caramel sauce, as that is primarily just corn syrup, but all by itself, that flavor is particularly good. In my top five all-time for ice cream flavors!
Super cute place. I think it’s mainly for like drinks and aesthetics, because the taste of the food was decent. The portions are good though. The chicken katsu was ok, but it was definitely better than the steak dish. The steak was super tough to bite into and it was so hard!!!! Overall the steak dish wasn’t too good and seemed like you could buy it pre made Idk… But I recommend the MATCHA ICE CREAM it was delicious!! And the chicken karaage was good too.
for the price, this place is good, but not great. the katsu chicken is only okay and the steak was decent. the onigiris taste quite good, but at $4 each, they’re not worth it. the appetizers and ice creams are really good though, try the fish&chips, the chicken karage, and any of the ice cream flavors.
Sugar Pine has delicious food, but tends to be on the pricey side for me personally. The Katsu was delicious and I loved all the side dishes it came with. The onigiri was good as well. The main dish was about $17 and the onigiri about $5-6, so overall close to $25 per person. I don’t think I’d come back to have a full dinner, but definitely to have a snack/coffee/ice cream. The ice cream was delicious, like seriously so smooth and creamy and great price wise! The restaurant has a nice ambiance as well. I could see myself coming to study or hang out for a little with a friend.
Order at the counter and they bring the food to the table. My spicy tuna onigiri isn't what I was expecting. I could barely find the tuna. It was shredded but the flavor was still good and it was spicy. The chicken karaage came out hot and moist but lacked flavor. The platted lunched looked great. I would order one of those if I return. Cute spot with fun flavored ice creams.
They have the least flavorful Japanese curry I've had in my life. It's like they watered down a block of s&b mild and then thickened it. The rest of the food, chicken katsu etc was alright. Nothing special, especially for the price. The presentation is nice but they really need to focus on the fundamentals and not just picture-bait. The ice cream is really solid though (a bit on the too-sweet side). If you go here for food: 2/5 For ice cream: 4/5
This is way overhyped for something of such low quality. It was definitely overpriced for what it is. Let me start with the onigiri, we got it Togo priced at $5.75! What?? I thought maybe it would be worth it, but I was wrong. It was so small and the salmon inside was minimal. It's very greedy to charge $5.75 for a small onigiri with such little filling. Next, we ordered the chicken cutlet curry. The curry tasted like a microwaveable or instant curry, and not even a good one. The cutlet was bland and dry, and for $18, you also get a side of cold miso. I wanted to like this place, but it is way overpriced and not authentic Japanese food at all. This will definitely be our last time going here, and I do not recommend it.
