The food is good. The waiters were attentive and quick. The overall atmosphere of the restaurant is nice. We enjoyed our meal. We arrived shortly after they opened and had the dining room to ourselves.
Went for dinner with friends after track workout. The food tasted authentic. There are couple of Thai restaurants that has authentic taste & this is one of them. Service is super fast. Chicken wings with crispy chili garlic is must try. The dishes are pretty spicy and if you are not into spicy then u should order very mild.
Had lunch with my friend there and absolutely enjoyed this place! We ordered grilled coconut sticky rice skewer (very special and 100% if you like coconut rice), pork neck (really juicy and marinated with the right amount of flavor), creamy Tomyum soup (comes with many shrimps), and Thai tea panne cotta (great dessert option)! The service is great as well. 5-star recommendation!!
One of the best Thai restaurants I’ve eaten at in the US, reminded me of the month I spent in Thailand several years ago. We ordered the fried chicken, pad thai, Nam Tok Moo and Kor Moo Yang Jim Jaew (thinly sliced pork jowl). All of them were excellent and great for sharing. Be warned, the Nam Tok was legit spicy at ‘medium’. We also really loved their selection of herbal and alcoholic drinks all with a Thai twist. Highly recommended for a night out with a small group of friends!!!
I’ve been a huge fan of Somtum Der for years and it’s past time for a review! It’s one of my favorite restaurants in NY/NJ and especially when we want delicious Thai. The quality of flavors is rarely matched in most other Thai restaurants we visit around the area. For example in their pad krapow / basil rice you can smell the aromatic basil throughout the dish! We usually order their duck larb, whose contrast of sharp, acidic, and hot hot flavors are so good. We’ve tried this dish in many other restaurants but the depth of flavor has been almost unmatched. This is all to say I love this place and enjoy every visit. It’s a good thing for my wallet that I don’t live closer.
Tourist from Atlanta that has a diverse food scene. Recommend here by a local whom we crossed paths with. Not a let-down in any way. Best crab fried rice I’ve ever had and also what was recommended by the local to get. Happy to have experienced this restaurant.
One of the most authentic Thai restaurants in NYC! 🇹🇭 Every dish I tried was packed with flavor and transported me straight to Thailand. Their mango sticky rice is hands down the best I’ve had in the city, so fresh, juicy, and perfectly sweet, even when other spots are out of seasonal mangoes. I’m also obsessed with their prawn sashimi, crispy fried chicken, and pad thai. Each one beautifully seasoned, balanced, and comforting in the best way. If you’re a real Thai food lover, this place is a must-try. I’m already planning my next visit!
Somtum Der in NYC is the real deal if you’re looking for authentic Isan (Northeastern Thai) food. The flavors are bold, spicy, and exactly what you’d expect straight from Bangkok. They earned a Michelin Star back in 2016 and it makes sense why everything feels fresh, balanced, and full of flavor. The papaya salad with grilled pork neck (Tum Kor Moo Yang) was perfectly spicy and tangy, the Isan summer roll was light and refreshing, and the grilled marinated pork with coconut sticky rice was incredible. I also tried the duck larb and the basil fried rice both packed with flavor and spice that isn’t watered down for western tastes. If you love Thai food and want the authentic version, this is a must-visit in NYC.
From the warm decor and splash of Thai flair, stepping in feels like a little trip to Thailand. The specials -- tender ribs and pork satay -- join their iconic crispy fried chicken and grilled marinated beef to bring bold Isan flavors straight from Thailand. This place is definitely must-visit! Holy Crab! The Crab Pad Thai is so good! I love how each dish is thoughtfully plated to elevate your dining experience right from the get go. Then you’d find out that each dish is full of bold flavors. Somtum Der is exceptionally good (as agreed by their Michelin) because they bring to us authentic Northeastern Thai food, specifically Isan cuisines. They don’t try to change the flavor profiles to best suit Western tastes, instead, they keep their original bold flavors. That is why they are exceptionally tasty!
Had dinner here at Somtum Der NYC with my wife and we had a great experience. The food was delicious, especially if you enjoy spicy dishes — full of bold, authentic flavors. The decor is unique and gives the place a warm, stylish vibe. The service was also excellent; the staff were attentive and friendly. Highly recommend for anyone looking to enjoy flavorful Thai cuisine in the city!
Super cute spot serving Michelin rated Isan cuisine and have been a staple in the community for over 13 years and you can tell. Every dish was super fresh and flavorful, with some unique stuff I never tried before. I loved their chicken wings, the pork neck, the pork skewers, the Taro dessert is a must try also
The food at this restaurant is absolutely delicious, and I come here often! As someone who loves spicy food, I always order the spiciest option, and it’s incredibly flavorful with just the right kick. However, my friend can’t handle spice, and luckily, this restaurant allows you to adjust the spice level to your preference—whether it’s mild, medium, or extra spicy. The ingredients are fresh, the flavors are well-balanced, and the service is excellent. I highly recommend this place to all food lovers!
Came as a party of 3 (had reservations for 6:30pm) right before the dinner rush. The food was delicious. We ordered the special fried chicken, grilled pork skewers, papaya salad with salted egg, pad ki mao (drunken noodles), and Thai iced tea. The portion size was just right. We came hungry and left satisfied.
This spot is a michelin-rated restaurant that offers variety of Thai dishes, with a focus on northeastern Thai cuisine (Isan), including spicy salads, grilled meats, sticky rice, and curries. The restaurant also has a laid-back, modern atmosphere that’s great for casual dining. If you’re in New York and craving some excellent Thai food, Somtum Der is definitely worth a visit! Make sure to make reservation because it can be really busy especially in the evening.
Excellent thai restaurant for pineapple fried rice and mango sticky rice. Any add on is up to you. Felt like pad thai was a bit too sweet. Lemon grass drink was amazing. Salad we ordered was a bit boring and spicy. Parking was somewhat easy to find after dark. Tables are very close to each other i can hear ppl talk. Would come back again for mango rice.
Somtum Der Thai in East Village, New York, is a great place for Thai food lovers. The restaurant has a cozy atmosphere, making it a perfect spot for a casual meal or a special occasion. The menu offers a variety of dishes, but their papaya salad is a must-try, spicy and fresh. The other dishes are also delicious, with lots of flavors. The staff is friendly and helpful, ready to recommend what to order. Prices are reasonable for the quality of food you get. If you enjoy Thai cuisine, Somtum Der is worth a visit.
Pad Thai was excellent. Yum Crispy Fish salad was also a standout. I'd recommend sharing this among 2-4 people due to its strong lime/salt flavor profile. Chef went too hard on the soy sauce for the drunken noodles, as the dish was a bit salty for me. Also, FYI they make it with ground pork. The sausage (Sai Krok Isan) was okay. It reminded me of Chinese sausage, but more dry and gamey. We wouldn't order it again. Service was nice and friendly, although pretty slow to take orders, even when it wasn't that busy. It also wasn't clear who our server was, so I didn't know who to wave down when we needed chopsticks, to place an order, or the check. I appreciated one of the servers for consistently topping off my water though. Lastly, the food was authentic, and the decor, music, and menu helped tie everything together.
Somtum Der is one of the few Thai restaurants in New York that really leans into the bold, regional flavors of northeastern Thai (Isan) cooking. The papaya salads are the obvious centerpiece and come out bright, funky, and properly spicy in a way that feels much closer to what you’d find in Thailand than the typical Americanized Thai spots around the city. The grilled meats and larb dishes also stand out for their balance of heat, lime, herbs, and roasted rice powder. The restaurant itself is small and lively, which adds energy but can make the space feel a little tight when it’s busy. A couple dishes can lean very intense on fish sauce or chili depending on your tolerance, but that’s also part of the authenticity. Overall, Somtum Der delivers some of the most vibrant Thai flavors in the city and is a great place to explore dishes beyond the usual pad thai and curries.
Food was good, great amount of fish sauce. Flavor lean towards salty and spicy so plan ahead. The Spicy fried rice with fish skin was mid, order the basil fried rice instead. Pad kra paw was good. Their fried egg's texture is exactly what I had in Thailand. Tomyum taste like straight out of MAMA seasoning packet.
There’s a high bar for Thai food in NYC and this unfortunately was simply not remarkable. The tom yum soup was packed with flavor and plenty of shrimp, the pad thai was fine but on the smaller side serving size wise, and the grilled beef w/ sticky rice kabobs felt a little disjointed as a dish. It is a solid spot if you are looking for a quick bite but would not go out of my way to snag a reservation to come back.
We decided to dine here since the reviews were high and we love thai food. The food was just okay nothing spectacular. We ordered the shrimp pad thai, pineapple fried rice, and the beef skewers. For the drinks we had thai tea. The pad thai was tasty. The beef skewers had a great flavor, however the meat was stuff and it was cold when it arrived. The pineapple rice bowl was different, it had more of a curry flavor with cashews, raisins, sausage, pork shavings. I was expecting more of a soy sauce fried rice taste. Would I visit this place again probably not.
ok now what the hell is going on with the ketchup in the padthai???? i can literally taste it and it looks so nasty. your homemade sauce is ketchup?? i ordered from you for a lot of times but this time you actually pissed me off. this is disgusting, sacrilegious and i will never order from you again.
