Carmelina’s in Boston will always be our top choice whenever we’re in the city. We returned again today, and as always, it reminded us exactly why we keep coming back: not just the consistently excellent food, but also the warm hospitality. Especially from the gentleman at the door who goes out of his way to seat guests with minimal wait. Even if there’s an hour-long wait, take a stroll around the North End. Its absolutely worth it! This visit, we ordered the Carbonara, Mimmo’s Meatballs, and Chicken Milanese. As always, the meal began with a piece of warm, freshly toasted bread - soft on the inside with just the right crunch on the outside - served with olive oil, balsamic vinaigrette, and a dash of seasoning. Simple, but incredibly satisfying. The Carbonara was a standout for me, hands down the best dish I’ve had here so far. That’s saying a lot, considering how much I already love their Sunday Macaroni and gnocchi. The meatballs are baked to perfection and packed with flavor, and the Chicken Milanese was crisp, juicy, and perfectly seasoned. Every dish is crafted with care and full of flavor. We’ve tried checking out other menus in the area during long waits, but nothing compares. We always find ourselves thinking about Carmelina’s and the consistently amazing experience they deliver. For me, that consistency is everything. A huge thank you again to the staff for finding us a table and making us feel welcome. This place is more than just dinner, it’s a tradition. We’ll always be back.
Had lunch on beautiful Monday morning. I rarely eat Italian because I’m very particular that my pasta be cooked al dente and I feel like I often get served overcooked noodles. But I woke up ravenous and looked up decently rated pasta joints in the north end and decided to try Carmelina’s. And yeah. I can confirm. It’s worth the hype. I had the risotto and a bowl of this tuna penne, both of which were not only delicious but the texture of both the rice and the noodles (to say nothing of theTuna) was perfectly cooked and seasoned. It both met and exceeded my standards as far as the food goes. When a restaurant charges significant prices for food, my expectations rise commensurately and it’s the rare restaurant that I feel earns the extra price point when there is so much really good food in Boston. Carmelina’s passes that test though. There wasn’t a single thing I had that wasn’t not only delicious but also cooked extremely well, and I’m a really picky eater when it comes to Italian texture. I will say, the restaurant ambience is… fine. A bit cramped and lacking any kind of real personality and the service was present but not particularly warm. But I don’t give a toss about that stuff. I’m here for the food and the food was A+!
We made a reservation two months in advance, and it did not disappoint. We started with the penne arrabbiata, which was spicy but delicious. The Frutti Di Mare was packed with seafood, plenty of clams and shrimp, and we loved the sauce. The carbonara was also spot-on. The restaurant is quite packed and space is limited, but that’s just part of the atmosphere. Overall, a very good restaurant.
So much fun sitting at the counter watching these guys create meals. We thoroughly enjoyed our Italian food well within the North End of Boston. We shared a couple entrees and salads. Bread service was nice too. Rollati was over the top delicious, and the Lobster Ravioli was good too. Beet Salad along with the different style of Caprese Salad you have to try. Overall an outstanding experience, several restaurants to explore in the area, glad we were able to get a table right at opening on Sunday without a reservation.
Carmelina’s is an absolute standout in Boston’s North End! From the moment we walked in, the service was beyond exceptional—warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. The staff made us feel like family, offering great recommendations and ensuring we had a fantastic dining experience. The food was delicious, with fresh ingredients and bold flavors that truly elevated classic Italian dishes. Every bite was a delight, and the cozy yet lively atmosphere made it even better. While the food was great, it was the spectacular service that made this meal unforgettable. If you’re looking for an amazing dining experience with top-tier hospitality, Carmelina’s is the place to be! Can’t wait to return!
Carmelina’s has amazing food and a great open air dining area! Everyone in our group enjoyed their meal here and we were so happy we could get last minute reservations. The pasta portions are quite large so I recommend splitting an entree. Would highly recommend this restaurant in the North End if you can find reservations!
This is a message to all my Carbonara loving friends out there. Carmelina’s has THE BEST carbonara I have ever had outside of Rome itself. Any country or city I visit, I will order the carbonara in hopes it lives up to the original. Most times in America “authentic” Italian places won’t even have it on the menu. Not only did they have it, but it rivaled most of the carbonara I’ve had across Italy, outside of Rome itself. Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to this amazing dish! My wife got the Littleneck clam dish and it was amazing as well.
Carmelina’s was hands down our best dining experience while visiting Boston. We arrived right when they opened and there was already a line forming by the door! The restaurant is tiny and can only fit a few parties at a time so if you don’t want to wait, I would suggest making a reservation beforehand. The inside is charming and the servers are nice. The food was heavenly, we got a side of risotto to try and it was superb. I got the chicken picatta which I’m always weary about because I think I make the best chicken picatta. I never thought that I would meet my equal, but I concede I have been bested by the best. My husband got the crazy alfredo which was packed with so many flavors and was presented beautifully. If we ever find ourselves in Boston again, we will be back!
I had a Caesar salad and Sunday Macaroni. so amazingly good! I was by myself and sat next to a local that swears Carmelina's is THE best Italian food in Boston. I wouldn't have gotten in if there was two or more. Make a reservation.
Fabulous meal. Service was great too. We started with the tuna arrabbiata followed by the beet salad. We easily shared both. They were as good as any similar dish we have had anywhere. I had the crazy Alfredo and my wife had the Sunday Macaroni (HUGE serving). We both thought the sausage was our favorite…meatballs next. Sauce wasn’t our favorite and the pasta was a bit overdone but overall a great meal. We definitely hope to return as the menu is filled with tantalizing options. We shared a bottle of Chianti which went very well with the food and was reasonably priced!
Food was great! We spilt the Sunday Macaroni. Definitely enough food for 2-4 people! Can’t wait to try the crazy Alfredo next time we’re in town!
This Italian spot in North End of Boston was amazing. Friend of mine got a tip that it fills up pretty fast so we should get there as soon as it opened. Glad we did! Soon as they opened, they were at 90% capacity and didn't take long to fill up. We ordered the Spicy Shrimp as an appetizer, and then Bolognese and the Chicken Parm for our main entrees. This restaurant may be small in size, but in flavor.... I was floored. Best Italian I have ever had. I would recommend this spot to anyone and everyone!! I will definitely be coming back!
Did not disappoint !!!! We came for lunch and this was the best Italian food I have had !!! I got reservation in April for July !!! Great way to spend an anniversary!! They brought us champagne to celebrate !!! I was super surprised !! And it was so super nice !!! I can’t wait to come back to Boston and eat here !!!
If you’re looking for a place for exceptional pasta, this is the spot. Every dish we tried was fantastic, made fresh to order with incredible care. The pasta was perfectly cooked—tender, silky, and full of flavor—while the sauces were rich, balanced, and complemented each dish beautifully. You could really taste the freshness of the ingredients and the attention to detail in every bite. Each pasta dish felt thoughtfully prepared, bursting with flavor and warmth, making it clear that this is a place where pasta is truly celebrated. A must-visit for anyone who loves authentic, delicious Italian cuisine.
What a superb dining experience! Our rental car agent at the airport recommended Carmellina's. I owe her a huge "Thank You!" The Little Italy area of Boston is stuffed with so many great looking Italian restaurants. We feel like we struck gold with our choice. New England Trip, January 2026. Day 4. Woke up to light snow. Started the day off with one final breakfast at the Waldo Emerson Inn. Avocado Toast and a yogurt parfait. Drove down to Boston, checked in to our hotel, and then had a late lunch/early dinner in Little Italy in downtown Boston. Our rental car clerk had recommended that we visit Carmellina's Restaurant. Wow! What a divine dining experience! My wife started off with some sangria as I sipped a Peroni. For appetizers, we had the Tuna Arrabbiata and a garden salad. For the main course, Dao had the Scampi, and I had Tonno Siciliano. Every dish was cooked to perfection, and the service was impeccable, even though the restaurant was packed, and there was a line waiting outside as we left. I highly recommend making a reservation if you are coming after 4:00 PM.
This place is a must try, we sat down and in 30 seconds had steaming hot bread in front of us with a delicious seasoned dipping oil. We got the garlic shrimp that were tender and flavorful and full of fresh sliced garlic. Then we got the sunday pasta and crazy Alfredo. Both came out steaming hot and fresh. The pasta dishes were full of flavor and generous portions. The service was great and very attentive. Can't wait to come back to Boston to try some other menu items! Thanks for the great food!
Just had a really lovely dinner here! We made the reservations so far in advance and it was absolutely worth it. I am definitely adding this place to my notable list of restaurants in the North End. For starters, the meatballs are a must. Truly some of the best I’ve had—the sauce was incredible and the meat was so tender. My favorite entree might have been the mushroom penne. The breadcrumbs were amazing and it was rich. They didn’t skimp on the mushrooms either!
Busy - yes Pricey - a bit Worth it - 100% !! It’s best to make a reservation, or leave your number and they’ll text you when table is available. Super friendly service, and the open kitchen is a great touch. The warm starter bread is very tasty, and a great way to wipe your plate at the end (and you will wipe it). Tried the Fettuccine Carmelina: - generous portion - Rosemary was just enough to taste it, but not overpowering - Shrimp, scallops, and plenty of chicken, and sausage Next time it’ll be either the Bolognese or the Crazy Alfredo. Absolutely loved Carmelina’s and would highly recommend it.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ One of the best dining experiences we’ve had in Boston, hands down. The food at Carmelina’s was absolutely amazing—every dish was on point. The staff was warm, attentive, and made the whole night feel effortless, and the atmosphere struck that perfect balance between lively and intimate. Pro tip: book your reservation well in advance. Even sitting at the bar was an experience in itself—watching the chefs cook in the open kitchen was honestly magical. If you’re looking for a memorable meal in Boston, Carmelina’s is a must.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - one of my favorites in the North End! The dishes are delicious! Plan ahead, their reservations fill up fast! Updated review: STILL HIGHLY RECOMMEND! They were spot on during our latest visit. The service, drinks, and food were all excellent. This was our second time ordering the meatball appetizer, and it was just as delicious as before. The gnocchi was perfectly fluffy and “light”!
Carmelina’s is truly a must-try Italian restaurant! From the moment we walked in, the warm atmosphere and welcoming staff set the tone for an incredible dining experience. The food was easily some of the best we’ve ever had at an Italian restaurant. The Crazy Alfredo was absolutely unforgettable — rich, creamy, and unlike any Alfredo I’ve ever tasted before. Honestly, unless I come back here, I don’t think I’ll ever have Alfredo like that again. The Chicken Parmigiana was equally amazing — perfectly cooked, tender, and full of flavor. The service was exceptional from start to finish, attentive without being overbearing, and the entire experience felt both relaxed and special. If you’re anywhere near this area, Carmelina’s is a must. You won’t be disappointed!
Carmelina's is a nice and cozy Italian restaurant, located in Boston’s North End. Perfect place for date night. The service was very welcoming and pleasant. The pasta is made fresh daily. The calamari was very delicious fresh and crispy. The main course, Lobster Ravioli was very flavorful and delicious. Overall this place is a great place to dine. So, whenever you’re in the North End of Boston, give Carmelina's a try!
The food was good, the portions are waaay generous, you can easily share a plate with another person. Lots of flavour- the bread and dipping sauce at the beginning of the meal was to die for- id go back again just for that. Sitting at the bar where you have a view of the food cooking is fun to watch -the vibe was great
Ordered the brasato and the chicken parm. The brasato had great flavor and the meat was so tender it was sliding off the bone. The risoto was a pleasant addition. The chicken parm was also good, the pasta tasted fresh.
Before leaving Boston, we decided to try an Italian place within walking distance from our hotel & landed at this absolute beauty. Based on the other reviews we seemed to have luckily wondered in to a hard to get into spot, but we were right there at Opening on a Monday & sat at the bar stools which I recommend. Because of the size & quality of the place they do have some restrictions that I think would turn some people off. For example, you must order everything at the same time & you only have 90mins to eat. I actually liked not having a reservation & being allowed to sit at the bar so we could watch the cooks. We got the Mussels to start which were very good. I got the Crazy Alfredo (Thinking it was the Carbonara thru my own error) and still left happy. My boyfriend got the Penne Gorgonzola & Brasato which was great even though we both thought the risotto was bland. Overall, for the amount of dishes we got I think it was fairly priced! It cracked me up that the staff ended up giving me a whole pitcher of water because I was drinking like a fish from the spiciness of the Alfredo 😂 Thanks guys.
Absolutely loved sitting at the chefs table. I absolutely loved the food, from the bread, apps and main. But WATCHING the food get made?! Dinner and a show. Only 4 people can sit there, so if this is what you want, be sure to ask for it!!
I believe that when the New World was first discovered, many Italians immigrated to Boston. That’s why there is a “Little Italy” here, with many families dedicated to running Italian restaurants. After being passed down for generations, the flavors may no longer be purely authentic Italian, but the Italians’ simplicity, friendliness, and sharpness shine even more after the journey of immigration. At the very least, they all communicate with guests in proper English—something that, as we know, can be a challenge when enjoying food in Italy, since English is rarely spoken there. Overall, this restaurant is extremely popular, with wait times often over half an hour. The open kitchen with live cooking adds to the lively atmosphere. Very nice! I also ordered the famous” Crazy Alfredo”—but be warned, the portion is huge and impossible to finish!
Carmelina’s, tucked into the North End’s perpetual bustle, is the kind of restaurant that feels busy before you even reach the door. A small crowd gathers on the sidewalk, leaning into the glow of the front windows, waiting for their names to be called with the patient optimism of people who know the wait is part of the deal. Inside, the room runs on a familiar North End rhythm: close tables, overlapping conversations, servers moving with practiced efficiency, and a warmth that reads less like performance than habit. Carmelina’s popularity is not a mystery. It offers the comfort of Italian American favorites, but with enough care in the details to keep the plates from slipping into autopilot. Start with the Garlic Shrimp in the Pan, a dish that arrives still shimmering in olive oil, the shrimp plump and pink, slicked with garlic and herbs. It is direct and satisfying, built on the oldest trick in the Italian seafood playbook: let the oil do the talking, then give diners something to chase it with. The garlic is assertive without turning bitter, and the shrimp keep their snap. You will want bread, and you will not be subtle about it. The Frutti di Mare leans into abundance. Mussels and clams open in a vivid red sauce, joined by rings of calamari and shrimp that soak up the briny sweetness of shellfish and the tomato’s deeper, wine-dark edge. It is a dish that tastes like the North End’s greatest hits played by musicians who still listen to each other. The seafood remains the point, not a prop. The sauce is generous, but not heavy, brightened by herbs and the faint heat that lingers at the back of the throat. Then there is the Bolognese, which offers a different kind of richness, slower and steadier. The meat sauce comes glossy and concentrated, tasting of long cooking and careful seasoning rather than sheer salt. It clings the way good ragù should, turning pasta into something almost spoonable at the center of the bowl. This is the plate that quiets a table, the one that makes you stop narrating the meal and just eat. Carmelina’s is not trying to be the newest thing in Boston dining. It is trying to be the place you are happy to return to, even when the line is long and the room is loud, because the food lands where it should: confident, comforting, and just polished enough to feel like a night out.
SO WORTH THE HYPE! Absolutely delicious, best pasta we’ve tried in our lives. Pictured: - Mushroom Pasta 100/10 - Bolognese Pasta 1000/10 - Bread: 1000/10 Cost: $40-50 Including tips Reservation: REQUIRED (made one 3 months in advance)
Was here this past weekend, and the Bolognese was absolutely amazing. I can't stop thinking about that and the adorable server! 10/10 recommend!!
This place is a solid 4.75. Appetizers were amazing, especially the tuna. I would return just for that. Small selection of beers. Pastas were great. Slightly overcooked, some slightly salty, some slightly plain, but all very satisfying. Didn’t try desert. Not sure it’s worth waiting several months for this meal, (we were lucky and just were able to walk in) but it’s a great choice in a sea of very good choices.
We lucked out and were able to get seated quickly Saturday night. Service was super efficient and they gave good recommendations. We loved the tuna appetizer and split the crazy Alfredo entree. Delicious!
100/10 restaurant located in the North End. I made a reservation in September for December. Boy, was it worth it!! The food was out of this world amazing. I got the Pesce Pistachio which was absolutely delicious. Can’t wait to return!
Amazing place, must visit!!!! Pasta was to die for!! App was decent and drinks were good. The service was amazing and everything just felt so Boston. Definitely will be coming back!!
Best restaurant ever! The pasta was the best we have ever had! Highly recommend! Service was amazing and Nick was very helpful with other Boston tips for our vacation. We enjoyed the whole experience.
Such a pleasant experience with delicious pasta! Arrived a little early to our reservation and were able to be accommodated in a timely fashion. Love the QR menu; the chicken Parmesan & crazy Alfredo were 10/10. Highly recommended.
The vibe and the food was great! Just make sure to reserve on Yelp well in advance!!! This location is very busy and a Reservation is Highly Recommended. The menu has good variety and the meals we chose were delicious.
I wanted to eat some Italian, so stopped by Carmelina’s in Boston’s North End for some Italian — the place was packed! Had to wait a bit for a table, but it was worth it. I had the Frutti di Mare spaghetti with clams, mussels, calamari, and shrimp in a delicious tomato sauce, served straight from the pan — super traditional and tasty. Definitely a spot to visit, just make sure to book ahead!
The food was as good as expectations! We ordered mimmos baked meatball, “exploding” little neck clams, and mushroom pasta, it was a good combination. The food was delicious, service was great, and the price is also very reasonable, we liked everything about it and already made another reservation to go back in two weeks to try other dishes.
Strongly recommend. I make a point to come here each trip to Boston (i live in Arlanta). Best italian in Boston and Top 2 I have eaten in the US. Great value, great wine at reasonable prices, cool scene and great service. Gianno is awesome and came by to chat. Again, highly recommend.
First time in Boston. We went there on a Thursday around 2 pm. We were able to get seated on bar stools next to the chefs (party of two). No reservation needed at that time. We even found parking up the road on Hanover Street! We ordered the Lobster Ravioli and Chicken Parmesan. These guys are phenomenal to watch behind the counter, each dish being cooked with passion. The chicken parmesan was cooked to perfection and the cheese blend on it, was a meal in itself. The red sauce is perfect in my opinion. The lobster ravioli had a bit of spice to it, tasted like a spicy vodka sauce. The lobster meat chunks weren't very big but the shrimp that came with were huge. We split the dishes between us and left completely satisfied, what a great meal. Compliments to the staff at this place highly recommend if your in Boston for Italian.
honestly, it was incredible. Creamy, rich, and perfectly seasoned, it might be the best I’ve ever had. The Chicken Parmigiana didn’t disappoint either — tender, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. Every dish felt like it was made with care and attention to detail. The portions were generous, and the restaurant itself has a cozy, inviting vibe that makes it easy to sit back and enjoy a meal. Between the amazing pasta, the perfectly cooked chicken, and the friendly atmosphere, it’s one of those restaurants you remember long after leaving. I can’t wait to go back and try more dishes — everything on the menu looks fantastic!
Had to see the hype for myself. The dining room is very small and loud.. tables are packed so close it almost feels like you’re dining with your neighbor, which is my only real nitpick. That said, the food more than makes up for it. I ordered the Sunday macaroni and it was absolutely delicious. Portions are generous, and you’re guaranteed to leave full. Worth visiting for sure.
I really enjoyed the atmosphere here. We visited on a Sunday, and they mentioned there might be a bit of a wait, possibly around 45 minutes, but assured us that people tend to eat quickly. We left our name, and they kindly texted us for confirmation. To our delight, we only had to wait about 8 minutes. The entire experience was quite pleasant. The service was exceptional, with our server offering excellent recommendations on the dishes. The bread and olive oil were particularly delightful, some of the best we’ve had. While the food wasn’t exactly our preferred style of pasta, it was still tasty. I enjoyed it, though I found the Scampi a bit too soaking, which I believe is their style rather than my personal taste. We also tried the Penne Capricciose, which was really good. Overall, the food was decent, and the service was outstanding. The dishes weren’t quite the pasta we were hoping for, but we still had a lovely time.
Nothing made sense about these lines and waiting times until... they served the food. Hands down THE BEST Italian food I have had in Boston. The taste composition is spectacular and no other place I tried in North End has come even close to that. Besides, the place itself is cramped, has too loud music to make a cozy atmosphere, has one moderately clean bathroom, they remind you at all times that you only have 1 hours 30 minutes there, and don't even offer a dessert menu because of this time constraints.
We’ve been waiting for more than two months to have dinner at Carmelina and given how crowded the place is and how hard it is to find a reservation, I had such high expectations for this place and they were not met. I went there for dinner with my friend last Friday. We shared the Carbonara pasta and Sunday Macaroni. The Carbonara had so much black pepper in it and it was so spicy I could’t eat more than a few bites. The Sunday Macaroni was good but too heavy with the different types of meat in it. In my opinion, it was not worth the two-month wait.
We tried Carmelina’s and overall had a mixed experience. The portions are generous, but the quality didn’t quite match the price point. The lobster ravioli came with six ravioli and a few shrimp, but the shrimp were bland and the dish was overwhelmed by a watery sauce. At nearly $50, it felt underwhelming. The Sunday Macaroni was hearty but could have used more depth of flavor—it was fine, but not memorable. For drinks, the pomegranate spritz was light but unfortunately too watery to enjoy. They don’t sell dessert. Service felt rush and the restaurant was cramped. Overall okay, but for the cost, we expected more refined flavors. A place for large portions and a classic North End vibe, but not our top choice for value or taste. Prefer Delfino’s in Roslindale.
Carmelina was on my “want to go to” list for quite sometime. Reservation is a must if you’re planning to visit. The restaurant is very small but seating is comfortable and clean. Menu is quite impressive and hard to choose which one to go with. The calamari dish was the best choice for us among all the other dishes we ordered, Tangy, crispy and the cape berries and garlic made this dish so incredibly delicious and unique. Pasta scampi had a bit too little shrimps in it, the chicken Parma was just okay-ish nothing special, spicy shrimps was good, it isn’t spicy at all it was more citrusy. Overall it was very busy, very very loud music in a small place filled with people made it impossible to talk to each other. I recommend the restaurant put down the music little bit.
Carmelina's has a genuinely lovely atmosphere — warm, intimate, and feels like a classic Italian spot in the North End. Unfortunately, the food and service didn't quite match the ambiance. The dishes were decent but felt a bit overpriced for what you get. Service was average — not unfriendly, but not attentive either. The setting is the real highlight here; the kitchen just needs to catch up.
We went to this restaurant to celebrate my daughter’s birthday, a moment that was meant to be special and enjoyable. Unfortunately, the experience was quite disappointing. The waiter was unfriendly from the start. We had questions about one of the dishes, and instead of explaining it politely, he showed impatience and little willingness to help. Additionally, in the middle of Boston, the restaurant does not offer Coke or Pepsi. When I asked about it, the hostess told me that if I wanted Coke, I should go to a “regular” restaurant. I found that comment unnecessary and disrespectful. The food is good, but the service completely affected the overall experience. What was supposed to be a pleasant birthday celebration turned into a stressful evening due to the lack of courtesy and hospitality. Unfortunately, despite the quality of the food, I do not feel it is worth returning.
