My fav cozy neighborhood spot. Ravioli all day
Love this place. Good food, service and value.
Neighborhood restaurant! I always have a positive experience here. I enjoy their specials as well as my go-to pasta dish of ravioli. I usually sit at the bar, the service is nice there, so I can't speak to table service, but I definitely come back for the food and the unassuming. Cash only.
One of the best meals I’ve had in a while. Such a cozy space with very nice staff. We ordered the specials (lamb shank and lobster ravioli) and it was IMPECCABLE. Such authentic Italian food and we will definitely be back frequently!!! Can’t recommend enough
Sardinian restaurant in the heart of Brooklyn Heights is an excellent find . Cozy not crowded. Excellent food, friendly staff, who are willing to make suggestions. Find choice of Sardinian wines and interesting cocktails. Very reasonably priced so one won't mind the cash only policy.
Love this place. Great, little, local Italian bistro. Last time I visited we had a very nice pasta with truffle and a mouthwatering tuna. Service is always friendly and on point. They did a great job at recommending a wine that went perfect with our food.
the most beautiful man and his friend were here, then they biked away ☹️ ill never forget him. baby come back!!! 😔
Cozy atmosphere and great food. The pasta that we ordered was super fresh and well done and the sauces very delicious. Definitely a place for any occasion and a must in Brooklyn Heights. Do jot hesitate to try it out!
The staff was friendly and attentive. The sommelier was knowledgeable and hit it on the nail. She even recommended my delicious entree zucchini stuffed with eggplant. Delicious tasty. I left satisfied and wanting more. I will come back for sure
Very charming restaurant. Great service. The food is probably the best part. Very tasty and satisfying Italian. This place rocks. Go!
It’s not hyperbole to say that I love everything about this place. Eating indoors, eating outdoors, the staff, the pasta, the apertivi, the wine, the song, the green checkered floor, the handle on the bathroom door! The emphasis on Sardinian specialties really makes this experience unique and delicious. The only thing I wasn’t sure about was the drink- the dark and stormy- which was a bit too bright and sunny for me. But I traded it for my friend’s Manhattan and everyone was happy as hell.
Like many Italian-Americans I am super particular (annoying) about the pasta I eat but I have to say the food here was really phenomenal. I can’t remember the last time my wife smiled so big. 11/10
I love this place. I've been for weekend brunch a few times and every visit is a treat. The menu is original and the vibe is strong. I love the old school Italian feel and coffee drinks.
What a nice and cozy authentic Italian place! Food is delicious but deserts are absolutely superb! Homemade panna cotta and ricotta cheesecake were the perfect way to finish our dinner here! Staff is friendly and helpful. Carlo is the best!
Visited the River Deli after many years. Same quiet neighborhood charm and thoughtful, flavorful menu. Hope to be back more regularly!
I missed it! I haven't been here for a very long time and I was so happy when My collage friend suggested River Deli. Classic, delicious, not over pricey, and a place I am going to make sure to come back soon this time. Happy to rate them 5 stars. It is time!
Love this place! This is actually my favorite place to bring friends who come to visit in NY. Few things are more relaxing than having their dreamy mushroom pasta (forgive me I forget the actual Italian name) and a spritz or negroni. This place will transport you to a feeling of slow European chill bistro vibes. The decor matches the vibe.
If you can make your way through the throngs of gawping idiots on this street, you might notice this gorgeous Italian/Sardinian place that COULD just dish out high octane garbage for the tourists like most other places in Brooklyn Heights, but they do in fact offer some incredible Italian food. Pricey, but not too bad. Brunch is also nice, their steak and eggs is spot on and remarkably under-priced!
One of my favourite restaurants in Brooklyn heights. It has an European vibe and the terrace gets busy in the evenings with locals looking for a quiet spot near the waterfront. I personally recommend the burrada and the pasta dishes
This place is a gem. Well...don't come for the food. Come for the vibe. Can we all just promise to keep this spot in business forever? Sit at the bar for a drink and some bites and then enjoy a stroll in the most beautiful neighborhood in nyc.
I very much enjoyed the late-night meal I had at River Deli. My niece suggested that we dine family-style, and she ordered an array of salads and pastas along with appetizers of fried calamari and burrata. Among the salads, a spinach salad with a piquant lemon dressing stood out, and I particularly enjoyed the papardelle con funghi. The lamb ragù pasta was also very good. Great atmosphere, too, cozy and gemütlich. My one reservation about the experience there was that we were given bread plates for both the appetizer course and the salads and pastas, and had to ask for additional plates to accommodate the second course. When those plates came, they were additional bread plates. Why bread plates and not standard-sized ones? We found that odd. I regret that I did not think to take photos. I was in Brooklyn due to a somber family occasion and it did not cross my mind to snap pictures.
Solid neighborhood Sardinian restaurant that was once one of the area’s best kept secrets. As a small neighborhood place, expect courteous but sometimes inefficient service. Also, expect great fish & seafood dishes and a small but solid wine selection, not classic or creative cocktails. Weekdays are better than weekends for dinner.
One of my favorite restaurants in NY. Perfect date night spot. The staff is always incredibly accommodating and kind. The food is consistent and delicious and classic. It always has a very romantic, fun ambience. I absolutely love this place and will recommend it always!
Had the special branzino, which was delicious. The house mocktail was also good. Staff very friendly and accommodating. Also had the tiramisu, which was not bad. Will have to try the cheesecake next time.
the omelette with ham and mozzarella was literally the best omelette i’ve ever had. it was perfect. the carbonara was good, but too small of a portion for my fiancée. the vibe was cool and casual, but don’t forget cash.
Amazing neighborhood spot - cash only - no reservations. We had the lasagna and a special for the night, which was branzino with spinach & potatoes - it was so good. The staff was nice and it was a quiet, chill vibe. Dog friendly in the front patio. Will absolutely be coming back!
Charming, romantic ambiance and very reasonable prices, especially considering the neighborhood. I really enjoyed my cocktail. Service was courteous and prompt. I ordered the NY strip steak and it was probably cooked just a little more than I requested, but it was still a very tasty, hearty meal. The only downside is that the place is cash only, although they have an ATM on premises. Would definitely eat here again.
We ducked in here on a Sunday afternoon to take refuge from the rain and I'm so glad we did. The dining space is adorable and feels very warm and homey. The staff was pleasant and service was quick. I ordered the Carbonara. It was delicious and I was pleased that the portion size was manageable and appropriate, not an overly large plate of pasta.
This place is great. Delicious food and fun atmosphere, but inside it's so loud that it's near impossible to have a conversation with two people at the same time. Next time, I'll opt for the outdoor seating.
River Deli's a (Cash Only) restaurant with delicious Italian food. The Branzino's fantastic, and the Octopus was perfect. The atmosphere is relaxed, and family friendly (for better or worse), but still good for a nice dinner date. Slightly pricey for the portion size, though it won't break the bank. Staff were attentive and professional. No complaints, just good food.
Ambience was perfect and the restaurant is gorgeous. Options were plentiful, the drinks were amazing, and the food was delish. Perfect experience.
Excellent, homely Italian food in a cute setting with friendly service. Been multiple times for date-nights and with small groups of friends and it hits the spot every time. * cash only * (they very clearly state this on all the menus)
It is a great little neighborhood restaurant. It has a homey and warm atmosphere and is usually nearly full. The food is reasonably priced and delicious. The wait for the food can be a bit long though since the kitchen is only large enough for 2-3 people. So sit down order some coffee and just relax. Great place for brunch on the weekends.
Our group shared different appetizers, delicious! I had papdelle pasta in a mushroom sauce, delicious and chocolate mousse for dessert!
Great little Italian/French restaurant. Unfortunately there is no beef tartare. But we decided to just get a bottle of primitivo and the tiramisu and panacotta - and honestly some of the best deserts we have ever had. Highly recommend. They didn’t have any extra bread at night though FYI.
Carlo was a wonderful host to this very charming establishment. Great ambience and the food was yummy.
Neighborhood establishment! Good, simple Italian food that hasn't changed in more than a decade. Very reliable. Beautiful environment and reasonably priced.
Neighborhood staple... Excellent atmosphere, solid dishes and lovely staff. A real local gem.
Very cozy place to relax and have great food with friends. Rocko is the best! The entire staff of waiters are friendly and cool. My new favorite place. CC
Stumbled upon this place while in the area. The cocktails were amazing but the food is why I’m coming back!!! Fried calamari is always my harbinger of a restaurant and theirs was fantastic- you could tell it was fresh and made with care. The Lasagna and ravioli dishes were scrumptious followed by real good cappuccino and a little bit of sweet dessert- bravo
We had passed this place so many times - it was always poacked for brunch on the weekends! We decided to try them out for dinner, and we're so glad we did! First, a caveat: it's cash only (they do have an ATM inside) so no cards! It's a very beautiful, old-school, turn-of-the-century vibe that we love about Brooklyn Heights. We were lucky enough to get a table for two without waiting. To start, our drinks were awesome! The mixologist made a wonderful margarita and the best old-fashioned I've had literally in years! Their calamari fritti was breaded & fried to a very delicate crisp. The homemade pasta dishes were amazingly fresh too. We had pappardelle al funghi (mixed mushrooms, olive oil, parmesan) and tagilatelle al ragu di agnello (lamb ragu, cinnamon, cannanou wine sauce, pecorino) and both were out of this world with flavor and perfectly cooked al-dente goodness. Their torta al limone slice for dessert was outstanding as well. This was one of the best meals we've had in the neighborhood, and we told Morgan (manager/server) that we would return with friends. It's a must! (Just remember to bring cash! And by the way, the prices were very reasonable: all the pasta dishes were around $20, drinks $16)
Cozy quaint neighborhood gem with solid food — fresh ingredients, homestyle cooking, generous (by NYC standards) portions for sharing. Even though it’s annoying that this establishment still accepts only cash in this day and age, we can’t help but keep coming back.
Very authentic, Southern Italy restaurant. My friends have been numerous times for lunch and dinner, but we stopped by on a Sunday for brunch/lunch. Awesome dessert options too! Very much like a small restaurant you would find in Italy. Carbonara made authentically with raw egg! Lasagna is 💯. Trofie is such an underrated pasta. Pane Frattau is straight from Sardinia. Outdoor seating! yay! Cash only, but worth it. (ATM on premises bc there is not one nearby!)
Loved this cute little Italian restaurant. Walked in on a Tuesday night without a reservation and was sat within 5 minutes. It’s a cash only spot but the prices are very reasonable. The cocktails were some of the best I’ve ever had, I recommend the Amaretto Sour. The Lasagna was the best dish out of all of them. Everything tastes homemade and delicious!
Delicious meal at River Deli. They consistently deliver excellent quality food from the uncountable times I've been here. Highly recommend the ravioli, zucchini and the tiramisu if I had to pick my favourite dished. Service is always efficient and friendly. Would note they only take cash but they have an ATM indoors but just something to keep in mind if you don't want to pay an extra atm fee. I've found theyre pretty efficient and they do take walk ins thankfully the wait has varied between 10 to 45 mins when I've generally been which is far better than many hyped up Italian restaurants which are impossible to book. Finally the area is beautiful so definitely walk around willow town while you wait for your table!
The first time we ever went here was the most lovely dining experience I've ever had, loved it so much we came back the next two nights. I stopped here before and after a trip to Italy, this place is better than any restaurant I tried on my trip. Everytime I'm in Brooklyn now I make it a point to grab dinner here. The food is always excellent, the atmosphere is incredible and the drinks and desserts are amazing. It's cash only but they have an ATM in the back. Try the tiramisu with a cappuccino!
Cash only spot, and doesn’t take reservations unless a larger party. Didn’t try any, but the cocktail list looked good, and plenty of wine options. Octopus was ok, but everything else was amazing. We missed lunch so had an early dinner when it wasn’t busy but around 7pm every seat was full. Great neighborhood spot and loved the branzino (special) and the spinach ricotta ravioli
really cute place. Great vibe and the service...well could be better. Great food, the lasagnas are delicious and the Bruschetta Mista are perfect to start the meal and share the love. You wont be disappointed, especially if you are looking for a nice place for a date.
All the class with none of the fluff. I'm an old man now but if I was back in my heyday this would be where Id bring all my ladies.
My experience at Rive Deli Restaurant was a delightful journey through exquisite flavors, with a particular highlight being their Ravioli dish. The culinary craftsmanship behind each delicate parcel of pasta was truly commendable, delivering a taste that lingered on my palate. However, it's worth noting that the portion size left me yearning for a bit more to fully savor the culinary excellence. Despite this minor quibble, the inviting ambiance and attentive staff created a memorable dining atmosphere. Rive Deli remains a top choice for those seeking authentic Italian cuisine, and the Ravioli dish is undoubtedly a testament to their dedication to culinary artistry.
The food was very good, in my opinion a true Italian restaurant. It’s a great spot for a dinner date, with a chill and pleasant atmosphere. However, keep in mind that it’s cash only (there is an ATM inside). I do find it a bit pricey for what you get, after all it’s pasta, but the quality is definitely there. The cocktails are also very good, though on the expensive side. Overall, I recommend it for a special date night. such a cute neighborhood spot - feels tucked away and locals feel in the best way. come for drinks on the patio and stay for dinner. the food is good, not mind-blowing, but the service is lovely and makes up for it. perfect for a relaxed night out. great wine list and outdoor vibe. got the calamari, mushroom pasta, zucchini and hugo spritz.
Good food, solid taste. I really liked the fluffy cheesecake and the pasta sauce. The octopus flavor was subdued by the seasoning, and the fennel salad barely had a few shavings of fennel. I loved the decor. Even the table in a dark corner at the back of the room was pleasant to sit at.
The food and atmosphere were great, and I thought the staff was attentive and pleasant. I had pasta with sausage and an old fashioned, and then woke up at 3am sick with a fever and throwing up. Felt crummy the entire next day. So I can't prove that it was from this place, but it was the only thing I'd eaten that evening. Obviously colors my impression a bit.
Very charming with a retro charm but it went downhill from there. We went for brunch. The waiter/kitchen refused to make any modifications to the menu and, when we asked for our sauce on the side, we were told the kitchen wouldn’t do that. Our dish came out wrong then, when it arrived, the toast was burnt. When we got our bill, we were charged for the replacement toast. Really? The waiter basically said we were the only people to complain about burnt toast. He also made a snide comment about other things we didn’t eat off our plate.
The food is good, but portions are small for the price. They lose a star from me because they do not accept credit cards. This is a huge turn-off for me.
atmosphere was impeccable but food was bad. too salty to eat and very basic flavors. service was friendly but a little slow. go to enjoy the cute old school italian cafe vibes but dont expect too much from the food
The River Deli is just ok. Nothing particularly noteworthy here. It’s pretty much a standard brunch place. The portion size was on the smaller side. The food was decent but there wasn’t anything I ate that would make me prioritize coming back here over going somewhere else. The interior is quite charming. I expect sitting outside in the middle of picturesque Brooklyn Heights would be quite pleasant.
Restaurant owner/manager standing at the bar ordering staff around all evening was a bad vibe. Kinda felt let he thought it was invisible to customers because he was speaking Italian. Disappointing. Second time being here. Food is good. Cash only. ATM on site for $2 charge. I hate to say Felice around the corner is better.
The food was incredible but then they didn’t allow me to enjoy what I ordered since they were rushing me out “because it was a Friday night”. I ordered a dessert drink that the waitress, whom I must say it’s extremely rude, asked me to not finish it and just leave so I can give someone else my table. Who in the world sells you something from their own menu to then ask you to rush yourself when you’re enjoying it??!! I will never come back and invest my money in this type of place. Also, cash only in 2025 ???
Beautiful restaurant. The food is just fine but it’s moderately priced. What killed the vibe was the incredibly rude wait staff (and owner or manager?? Couldn’t tell)
River Deli is the cutest little Italian restaurant tucked away on a quiet street in Brooklyn Heights. They specialize in Sardinian cuisine. Everything was quite delicious. Sadly, our experience was tainted at the end of the meal after a rude encounter with one of the staff there. He yelled at me when I took my camera out and kicked me out of the restaurant.
Be aware .. Cash only .. There was no sign or notice from staff that they only take cash. How “convenient” they guide you to use the atm in back of restaurant. Staff was not friendly and tone seemed I should just know they take cash only. Otherwise food was fine for brunch.
If you’re used to European/Italian restaurants, this place will probably disappoint. Really beautiful place to sit, but the food was mediocre and cash only. ATM inside but the transfer cost as a tourist was $6. Which is a lot id you already payed for pricey pasta. There is a lot of potential though, and the place was packed so they must be doing something right..
Was hoping to gain some faith in the food scene of Brooklyn Heights with River Deli but was disappointed even more than I could’ve possibly imagined. Walking by the restaurant you *want* it to be an enjoyable experience, unfortunately, the timeline for our dinner goes like this: We wait 10 minutes for a table (great for a Saturday) and our hopes are still high. My boyfriend and I browse and select what we want to order however wait about 15 more minutes for the waiter to come back and take our order. Around us, we could hear him hop table to table and explain the specials for the night but when he finally arrives to us he simply asks “if we’re ready.” This would also be the last time we speak to him (not because he dies but just because he ignores us the rest of the night). We order two glasses of wine (later a 3rd), mussels to start, the ravioli and the tagliatelle for entrees. The mussels and wine arrive promptly. No glaring issues with either except the wine just simply wasn’t very good. We proceed to wait a whole hour and 10 minutes for two pasta dishes. At about 50 minutes we voice our concerns to the manager who insists to/yells at us that “it’s coming, it’s coming!” After another 10 minutes we ask again only to be told they’re still “coming!” By now, other parties of 2-4 have been sat, ordered, received their food, paid, and left. The last 10 minutes go by and we get our food. Due to sheer hunger (and wishing to escape River Deli) we finish our pasta very quickly. To redeem themselves, we are kindly offered a free $9 dessert by the only other server in the restaurant. We just ask for the check. Total comes to about $115 with nothing comped and not even an apology offered by the manager. We pay. We leave. An incredibly frustrating and confusing time considering the other tables around us did not seem to have our experience in the slightest. I still have praise for “traditional” Sardinian food, just not at River Deli.
My husband and I went here for brunch. I thought because it’s always packed it was a good sign. How wrong I was. To start off We asked to try the wines by the glass, 3 out of 4 options were not available, and then she just bought us the 4th option so I guess that’s either all they had or the server just couldn’t be bothered anymore?? My husband ordered poached eggs, whites were still runny. I ordered their pasta with red sauce; the Malloredus Sardi Allla Campidanese; now I am a pasta loving person, I have never left back any pasta on my plate; and I couldn’t even finish it, it tasted like it was just the can of hunts tomato paste. The oil from the meat is my guess was separating from the sauce, the meatballs were over cooked and some were even burned. I don’t know but I have had better food from a diner. I left as hungry as I came. Not a good dining experience period.
This was a terrible experience. Two friends and I ordered the same drink and all three tasted different (two were horrible and one was okay). It’s the inconsistency for me. More importantly, the manager/waiter was extremely rude and tried to pressure us into buying food when we came for drinks and made us feel very rushed. They also said they had reservations waiting for our table...but we heard an employee on the phone mention that they don’t take reservations. Also, the menus had different prices (see attached photo). I would leave zero stars if I could. Oh wait, the music was good and the person serving water was kind.
Shady restaurant! They already added a 20% tip to the order for a table of 4 and then asked if we wanted change back when we put a 100 dollar bill for a 65$ order. They also stood there waiting for an additional tip and had an “gratuity suggestion” of 18%. They also are CASH ONLY and got no service at all. Our water glasses were never refilled and the waitress only came around once to ask our order and just brought the bill in the end without us asking for it while we were still eating
Incredibly rude service. It was raining and they gave us a table outside. After that, 3 different people came up to us to “inform” and “let us know” that they are cash only, but they have Venmo, PayPal and etc, because “we are not from around here”. Never experienced anything like that, so rude.
Treated very disrespectfully and rudely. My mom paid in coins (and a bill, including a tip) and was approached very aggressively by the supposed owner and told she was being very rude multiple times and very aggressively. She was upset for a large part of the day afterwards. We received no explanation of what we did wrong. What's wrong with the people here?
Mistakes happen. How mistakes are handled matters. Tonight, our waiter brought my fiancee the wrong entree. Without apology, he gave us a choice: either accept the incorrect dish or wait for another to be made (the original dish had sold out and been mistakenly served to the table next to ours). To avoid another 20-minute wait and prevent food waste, my fiancee accepted the incorrect dish. When we saw it on the bill, we politely asked the manager to comp the dish—the dish that would have gone to waste if not for our compromise. He refused. Throughout this entire exchange, neither the server nor the manager offered an apology. The manager delivered a brief but aggressive lecture before reluctantly admitting he might have been willing to offer a discount or free dessert. He even stated that if my fiancee had only eaten half of her dish, he would have promptly comped half. We paid in full because we believe honor is not a negotiation. As longtime patrons of this restaurant, we're disappointed to say we will not be returning, and we feel obligated to share our experience with neighbors and friends.
As this is the second time this has happened, I feel I should leave a review. I love the atmosphere, but the food is just fine. The first time we sat outside and were given menus and then ignored for half and hour and my friend was a bit upset so we left to get something else. The second time *edit: this was during fall season* we also sat outside, had a really lovely chat with our waiter who took our orders. Then an hour came and we did not get our food or drinks, and weren't able to get the attention of anyone to help us. We figured they were busy. But after watching everyone around us get seated, have full meals and even begin to leave, our waiter finally came back and said he forgot to put in our order. We were not offered anything, only that if we wanted to order dessert they would comp one, which we didn't really want. Not sure if this restaurant has a system for making sure they get to the tables on the outside, but it really wasn't a nice experience and I don't think I'll be returning.
