We tried this newer restaurant to celebrate a birthday. Friendly knowledgeable Tyniyah is an Incredible attentive server and explained each ingredient with detail. The food was amazing, and as encouraged, our group shared the appetizers, main courses, and desserts. The menu has great variety and everything our group ordered was full of flavor. We were sitting close to the kitchen and we could see the chefs and servers keeping an eye of detail and cleanliness during the preparation and presentation that impressed our group.

Writing this review as I'm eating my leftovers - We made a reservation at Shokudo for my birthday and it was absolutely amazing. After coming back from Japan last year, I was craving something in Charleston that could compare to the food and this meal truly brought me back. It's very clear that Shokudo puts a lot of thought, respect and time into their food, something that really differentiates Japanese food from the rest. The service was amazing, they gave me a personalized birthday card and the whole staff was constantly attentive to our table. Truly one of the best dining experiences I've had. I'm so happy that people in Charleston can now experience food like this.

Stop looking at reviews, stop thinking about it and just go. Matter of fact just stop reading this review go back book your reso and then come back.. I’ll wait. This place is phenomenal! Hands down top 5 restaurants in Charleston and one of my top all time. Maya who?!? Sorry Maya but you will not be missed. I did not have high expectations walking in and hadn’t really heard much about this place but man oh man did they deliver! Service superb, food exceptional, cocktails elevated, I brought my own company and she’s always a 10/10. Even the bathrooms in this place smelled good. We tried a bit of everything, allergies including a tree nut one wasn’t an issue at all. We ended up getting the wrong cocktail at first and thank you Bob Ross for that happy little mistake because that I shishito you not cocktail was awesome! The yuzu-al suspect also a winner! They also do a sake flight which was a great mix and included cowboy Yamahai which I always enjoy. You have to get the edamame, best I’ve ever had anywhere. The skewers were great the hand rolls even better, small plates large plates they didn’t miss. Then dessert was an ode to Mcdonadls baked apple pie! Shut the front door! Chef Masa’s throw back to my childhood and his own in an elevated way was truly icing on the cake. Yes I walked over and clapped for the kitchen it was excellent! Charlie stopped by and we had a nice chat, Curtis or Chris our server..I kept saying it wrong, was excellent, his suggestions were great and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience on a random Wednesday night. 10/10 Highly recommended and James Beard worthy.

Indago Road has done it again, with another amazing concept with the best Japanese food & service. This is not your ordinary Japanese food this is Izakaya-Tavern🏮 style where they smoke the food with charcoal so the taste is smokey in a good way. The menu was super extensive with plenty of meats and sides to try. Chef Masa is so talented; I would highly recommend coming and giving them a try, it’s a great addition to King St, in Charleston. Make sure you come with friends so you can order all types of different dishes to share! Ask for Connor, he took such great care of us, and made our dinner so memorable.

We tried Shokudo on opening day and absolutely loved it! We ordered a variety of skewers and every single one was delicious — the duck meatball (kamo tsukune), chicken thigh (tori negima - my favorite!), and pork butt (kushi katsu). The karaage was perfectly crispy and flavorful, and the BBQ pork ribs were incredible (sticky & sweet). The ramen was okay and a bit light on the broth. We finished with the miso ice cream, and we absolutely loved it! It is definitely on the pricier side, which makes it more of a special-occasion spot than a regular dinner outing. Still, the staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and very welcoming, and the overall quality and service made it a memorable visit!

We had an excellent dinning experience with Chris. Every dish was amazing, the flavors were incredible, and the service was top notch. Highly recommend the bbq ribs, the oysters, and the kushi katsu. We had many other small plates and the Nagoya ramen dish and dessert. We will definitely be back!

We finally made it to Shokudo and it absolutely lived up to the hype. We couldn’t wait to try it—and now we can’t wait to go back for all the dishes we didn’t get to try this time. The service was friendly and attentive, and everything we ordered was packed with flavor. The standout dishes for us were the lamb and pork skewers—perfectly seasoned, tender, and truly memorable. We’re already planning our next visit! Highly recommend.

What a wonderful experience Shokudô was! Me and my partner made a reservation for our 1st anniversary with a few special requests listed and the workers at Shokudô made sure our visit was a special one. The food we had was from the 4 course restaurant week menu and was amazing, from taretare to the shishito peppers and the soba noodles with wild boar everything was so flavorful (apologies for the lack of pictures we just dug right in). The atmosphere was wonderful especially the outdoor red lit bar in the back of the restaurant which Cecilia was so kind to show us among all the other little things she did for us. My favorite part aside from the food and company was the card on our table when we first walked in that read "Happy 1st Anniversary" and was signed by all the workers. I would highly recommend Shokudô to anyone looking for a higher end dining experience and a wonderful night out. Thank you so much for the experience

We had such a lovely time! Beautiful date night experience. Highly suggest and wonderful attentive service! Get the honey cake for dessert, amazing! Waygu dumplings, the ramen, the skewers were so good!

Was in Charleston for work and this was near my hotel, went there right after it opened and it ended up being one of the best meals I’ve had in quite awhile, everything was amazing and I thought they missed something with how relatively cheap it was. To be fair I think my frame of reference is off from living in NYC are my whole life but even still. Sophia was my waitress and she was great recommended some things I wasn’t even considering and they were all 10/10. The shaka shaka fries and the Nagoya noodles especially stand out. If you’re in Charleston don’t miss this place, it’s like high-end dining without the crazy prices.

Shokudo exceeded all expectations, which can truly be a challenge with the Charleston food scene. We had the best meal all thanks to our server Sophia, who was the absolute best. We trusted her blindly and she did not disappoint! She truly made our dinner very memorable. 10/10

Went on opening night and was greeted so warmly! Every staff member we came across was friendly, and the atmosphere was great. The karaage was perfectly crispy and delicious. The tori negima and tsukune were flavorful, though the portions were a bit on the smaller side. The shaka shaka fries were really tasty too. For my main dish, I had the Japanese curry with crispy fried fish filet on top—it was excellent. The skin was perfectly crisp, and the curry itself tasted pretty authentic compared to the ones I’ve had in Japan. I also ordered the Shochu and Tell as my drink, and it was amazing! For dessert, we tried the miso ice cream (seriously, worth every penny—just get it!) and the apple pie, which was nice and flaky, especially paired with the ice cream. The only downside is the price. I expected it to be on the higher side since it’s downtown, but spending close to $100 per person just to feel full felt a bit steep. This was more for the experience. Overall, it was definitely worth trying, and I’d come back again to check out their newer menu items in the future!

It’s Charleston, so you pay to play — but totally worth it. The food, flavor, and vibe are top-tier. You feel like you’ve stepped out of Charleston and into a big city with real culture and class. Warm, modern, and subtly Japanese in style. Everything was spot-on: perfectly seasoned edamame, tender steak with the right char, and ribs that were juicy, sticky, and full of flavor. Staff was friendly, attentive, and knew the menu (their karaage chicken is gluten-free!). Bonus points for the amazing back deck — perfect spot to relax and enjoy the night.

Wow, this is our new favorite place in Charleston! The ambience was classy, the food was spectacular, and the service was impeccable. We were impressed with the server, Matt’s, knowledge and the swarm of service from the other servers surrounding during our meal. Our beverages never went empty, and there was never a dirty dish left on the table. We came in for our daughter’s 19th birthday dinner, and they spoiled us with some special treats… complementary appetizers and desserts. Between the manager and the servers, they all went above and beyond to make sure our experience was nothing short of exceptional. We cannot wait to go back!

Amazing experience all around! I sat at the bar on the back patio and Ashleigh and Sean were great! Ashleigh had the best recommendations- the toro beef skewer and fish hand roll were my faves. I finished everything with the hand pie and ice cream and it was the perfect combo. It was a fun environment with others around the bar making convo too and everyone was incredibly attentive. 10/10 would come back for a date night or another solo dinner!

Didn’t get to take pictures soaked in the experience and food. Literally every bite was fantastic! We had the shishito, cod, ribs, like half the menu posted a picture of that. From the host to our server Ryan, a check in from Charlie - service all around was top tier! Best vibes from every person. Lookout for them, 2.5 weeks open and they’re a restaurant to keep an eye on—James Beard, Bib Gourmand, Michelin! If they keep their service and high caliber food quality consistent, expect great things here!!

The Bartender JONAS treated us like queens. He’s very attentive, knowledgeable, and has a great personality! He made our night!! *Food was one great bite after another *Loved the overall vibe * Drinks were Delicious Will be returning soon

The food and staff were amazing! The inside is very nice and they have a lot of seating. The atmosphere only got 4 stars because it was quite loud in there. I think it’s just a small space with a lot of seating. If you’ve never been to a place like this, you usually order several plates to share ranging from various sizes. We go the: Pork gyoza Spicy tuna - this one threw me off. I was expecting a hand roll but it was a dollop of spicy tuna you pinch off into the nori. I probably missed that info on the menu. It was still really good though! I would expect this for one person though. Karage - I had doubts about the egg on it, but it tasted great! Ribs - these were the best thing in the word. We had to order a second round. It was also nice they have you a fresh hot towel to wash your hands with.

Went here to celebrate our 4 year anniversary. The food was so flavorful and filling! We’ve been to alot of restaurants in the Downtown area and we’re definitely adding this to the top of the list. Service was excellent! Thank you Ashley, Charlie and the rest of the staff for making this special for us this anniversary.

Had an amazing time at Shokudo. The food was incredible every bite was full of flavor. The service was so genuine and friendly, and the atmosphere just felt right. The patio was beautiful, perfect for a night out. Overall, such a great experience definitely one of those spots you look forward to coming back to. Thank you

Everything start to finish was amazing. The food was exceptional, bursting with flavor and Perfect to share. The service was inviting yet professional. The little things like a signed birthday card from the entire staff went a long way. For only being open 3 weeks they are absolutely crushing it. EAT HERE!

Me and my boyfriend came just because we were interested in the menu… Shokudo exceeded out expectations !! Tyniyah was our server and she was amazing- she even sent out complimentary edamame. Food, drinks, and atomosphere were amazing! 10/10 recommend.

What a wonderful experience. I dined with my wife and 2 friends. Service was impeccable and the food was delightful. We ordered several different dishes and everyone thoroughly enjoyed them. I highly recommend Shokudo, which I consider a pitch perfect experience.

No reservation but sat at the bar and Chris took care of us. Top to bottom IRH has done a great job transitioning this space from the former Macintosh concept. Shaka Shaka Fries, the ribs, and the ramen are all musts. Additionally, they’ve only been open a week and having parked at 7:30pm, we were out the door before 9 but didn’t feel rushed whatsoever. Thanks to Chris and the rest of the staff, we were extremely impressed and will definitely be back with friends soon. Cheers guys

Stoked to have this spot in the neighborhood. Sat at the back patio bar and was welcomed with exceptional service. Food was all on point but the pork ribs were the star of the meal. Great date night spot and will be back.

We decided to try this new Japanese concept restaurant and we’re not disappointed. The interior is very well done, perfect lighting, and cool hip atmosphere. The service is excellent, as with most good restaurants in Charkeston, but this was a step beyond. A well oiled Machine. Great drink options. Japanese Beer, Local Beer, Sake, Japanese Whiskey and craft cocktails. The menu consists of small to medium dishes. Don’t be fooled because we ordered too much food in the end. Highlights - Oysters, Uni Toast, Shishitos, OG Ramen Soup, Tuna Handroll and more. All in all a great place to try out. My only “negative” comment is that we were seated next/across to the Cured Meat Fridge which is super bright red (if you stare at it you get the Seinfeld Chicken episode flashbacks LOL). If I was going on a date night and chill at the Bar with some appetizers, this would be the place. But if you want Japanese cuisine and the same style and atmosphere, I would go to O-Ku.

Easily one of the best meals we’ve had in years! Between the cozy ambiance, the knowledgable and friendly servers, and the outstanding food-we had a 5 star experience. Every dish we tried was exceptionally delicious and so unique. We will definitely come back the next time we are in Charleston!

Excellent experience at Shokudô. We tried several dishes — hand rolls, BBQ pork ribs, edamame, and crudo — and everything was delicious and well prepared. Friendly, attentive wait staff who gave great recommendations. Clean space, great aesthetics, and a relaxed atmosphere that isn’t overly noisy. Highly recommend and will definitely return.

Shokudo is definitely a place to check out. We went in w/ a large party on 12/5/2025 and the atmosphere/vibes were fantastic. The customer service we received was phenomenal and I would most certainly come back again. We did come out of town w/ a large party and I am immensely thankful to Charlie for making it happen. Cocktails were tasty. Definitely get the fries, toro skewer, and beef tartare handroll.

I just wanna hands down give this restaurant the best review I can give because they absolutely deserve it. I work as a chef downtown here and I’ve never had such a welcoming atmosphere. My daughter had turned 15th today and had to put together last minute plans because I worked today and they really helped with the celebration. Desserts were utterly tasteful and Sophia was an amazing server, even had everyone in the restaurant sign a birthday card for Ameriana’s bday, I can’t thank you enough for your hospitality. I will definitely be coming back soon! Happy New Years!!!!!

Visiting from Savannah just to come here! Sat at the bar and enjoyed my time talking to the bartenders who pointed me in the right direction for trying different sakes! The tuna hand roll was delicious as well as the beef skewers. I wish I had the appetite for more but I will be back to try the ramen!

We went for dinner and had a wonderful meal! We got a few different items and everything was delicious. The server recommended getting a few of the smaller shared plates and one or two larger plates. It worked out great because we were able to try more dishes. I highly recommend Shokudo.

We had dinner at Shokudo last night and enjoyed every bite. We sat in the back patio at the bar. Hallie was so knowledgeable about the food and had great recommendations. We tasted dishes from almost every section of the menu. We loved the Karaage Chicken Namban - which is fried, but if you have gluten allergies, it’s gluten-free! We loved the dumplings and the stuffed mushrooms and the edamame. But the star of the show for us was the black cod, skewer. The right amount of crispy and fatty all at the same time. The atmosphere is relaxed and the staff is very friendly. Highly recommend. We will be back.

Came here as our last stop 2 nights in a row on vacation. Amazing cocktails and small plates. We really enjoyed the miso caramel ice cream and ribs.

Most of the courses were good to great. A couple were just okay. Pacing was way too fast. 7 dishes in about 45 minutes. Less than an hour for an entire meal including drinks order and a fair amount of menu time. Give a breath between dishes. Price adds up quick.

C

The atmosphere and vibe here are great, and the staff were super attentive truly excellent service. The food is definitely unique and beautifully presented, though perhaps a bit too experimental for my personal preference. However, the cocktails are absolutely amazing and a must-try!

I've had "share portions" places before, this place had menu options that at least can be filling. I had the "OG Ramen" it was very good. Felt like taking authentic ramen and adding some additional twist to it. The yuka fries were fantastic. And dessert was phenomenal, great presentation, we had the Honey C(UBE). (See photo) I'd go again, but you must be aware of these newer restaurants opening with "sharing" portions in mind. It's not always a place to go and get full, not without spending a pretty penny. We happened to go on opening night and while the timing on the food was a little behind, they accommodated us and were very tentative.

G
Georgia Shedd

We had a nice dinner at the bar in the Beer Garden, which has a cool open air atmosphere. The bartenders were lovely and had wonderful recommendations. The edamame and beef skewers were definitely the stand outs. Some menu prices felt a bit high - but others were reasonable given the location. Overall, we would likely come back for drinks and appetizers at the Beer Garden.

T
Tatiana Waldon

Delicious, clearly made with carefully-sourced ingredients and excellently prepared. However, I was surprised at how small the portion sizes were. I ideally had a $100 meal in mind for 2 people before tips and drinks - we were right at $100 without drinks and without desert, and we were not quite full/did become hungry later in the night. I think it would have been easy to spend $200 here on food for 2 people with sharing plates. Once again, delicious, but I would have preferred if the total had been $80 before drinks. I feel like we usually hit $60-70 at Indaco and have leftovers, and the vibe is similar. Shokudo is lovely but not “fancy”/formal enough of a setting to match these prices. The staff were knowledgeable and kind, and as it was opening week, were openly soliciting feedback. We enjoyed talking with everyone. Overall, Shokudo is a lovely and unique addition to Charleston’s food scene.

We went in with high expectations for a new Japanese seafood restaurant in town, especially given the competition nearby. What we got instead was a two-hour ordeal just to receive the first part of our meal. When the food finally arrived, the portions were tiny and every dish was underwhelming — the seafood was noticeably fishy, which was the biggest red flag of all. To make matters worse, we never received our edamame or tuna tartare appetizer. The wait dragged on so long that the manager eventually came out, acknowledged the issue with caution, but didn’t offer any sort of compensation or apology beyond a few empty words. After hours of slow service, missing items, and disappointing, fishy-tasting food, we ended up leaving and finishing our dinner elsewhere. Hopefully this experience was just growing pains from being a new restaurant, but right now, it’s not worth the time or the wait.

j
jeremy osheal

Food was great, portion sizes were very small. 145$ for four people 1 item each, and two drinks. We left hungry. Not anything I’d try again.
