Also designed by Earl Young and conveniently located in the parking lot of the Weathervane Terrace where we stayed. Food was delicious, view of the canal was very cool, we got to see the ferry come through. Rylee was our server and she was excellent. Very engaging and helpful and took that extra step to ask us where we were from and what we doing for our honeymoon. A good server makes such a difference and she was great. If you’re interested in the work of Earl Young, be sure to check out the fireplace and ask to go downstairs for the little museum of his life. Definitely would come back here.
Finally got around to reviewing this awesome restaurant. I was privileged to visit this restaurant in July. Starting with the location, it is just such a great place to enjoy your meal. The drinks compliments the food. The food was delicious and the staff was friendly. The place does get busy, so call ahead to find out reservation requirements. Would definitely visit again.
Absolutely beautiful spot from head to toe. A little rustic modern, nautical theme. The views everywhere are spectacular. Extremely large upstairs and downstairs dining rooms and a nice patio overlooking the watervane. The food came out extremely hot and perfectly cooked. For how fancy this place was you don't need to break the bank to dine here. Would highly recommend to anyone traveling newr Charlavoix.
The Weathervane is a long time favorite for myself and my family. My grandparents have been taking us here since before I can remember! My cousins have had wedding parties here and we’ve celebrated many a birthday overlooking the channel and watching boats go by as we dine on delicious morsels. The appetizers are fantastic! The lamb lollipops as well as the escargot really hit the spot. All the sandwiches are great but I really enjoy the whitefish! Whether it’s fried or on a cedar plank it is oh so delicious! Next time you’re in Charlevoix be sure to hit this spot!
Stafford was very nice. The husband and I enjoyed a glass of wine and beer and a delicious meal. I had a black bean burger and the husband a blt with pork belly. Their tomato and basil soup was creamy. The husband doesn't like tomato soup but he liked this one. Hospitality was great. Our Server was very knowledgeable. The view was beautiful. We will try to go back.
Awesome food, great service both are staples of a Staffords Service Restaurant. Great views of Pine Creek Channel. Highly recommend for that special occasion. Potato Leak soup is awesome!
I loved this place. The view from the patio is beautiful if you love the water like us. You can see out to Lake Michigan or down to Lake Charlevoix, with boats passing by and the Bridge going up and down. The boats can be loyd at times, but we didn't mind. I overheard others complain. The food was excellent, as well as the service. We had the Escargot, Lobster Fusseli and oak planked whitefish (posting pics). It was all delicious. Great portions. It was a great end to our day.
Good food and GREAT location and style of building. The boats and draw bridge are a real draw and must see. The drinks are good as well.
This feels like a hidden gem. I qm sure it isn't, to those who frequent the area. We dined outside, where we watched the boats traverse the channel and pass through the drawbridge. Our meal was excellent and the staff were even better. I will stop back if whenever I return. Highly recommended.
Staffords was our last stop on a great day in Petoskey and didn't dissapoint. A little pricey for what we ordered but the scenery is beautiful (practically on the water), the food well executed and the staff friendly.
The Food was exquisite, and Brenda was lovely, I had elk and it was cooked to perfection, my husband had salmon it was great. We topped it off with their Turtle puff dessert. Can't wait to go back.
Everyone needs to eat here. We sat on the water near draw bridge. Ate whitefish sandwich and fries, OH SO GOOD. I don't have photos of the plate, but it was a sweet presentation.
Wonderful restaurant on the canal, it's pricy but the quality of food is great with a casual atmosphere. Sitting outside to eat is right on the canal and it's lots of fun to watch the boats go by on their way out to lake Michigan. The menu has a great selection of fish including whitefish and salmon. The deserts are wonderful also, our family had chocolate lava cake and a piece of glutten free carrot cake. Overall this was a great restaurant and I look forward to a return trip sometime (after saving up some more money :-). Ps there is a drawbridge here so on the downside every 30min there is a bit of noise with the alarms bells chiming and the bridge raising and lowering.
Not a bad seat in the house! The Whitefish in Morel Cream Sauce was outstanding! The Chicken Wellington was fantastic! So glad we gave it a go.
This is a great spot for a special night out. Our waiter was really sweet and informative. They have an extensive wine list with a lot of local suggestions. Their menu has a little bit of everything taste and price wise, plus a rotating selection of specials. The tables are all spaced out and it feels private despite being in such an open room.
Helen struck a perfect balance being attentive & not intrusive. The food was excellent & ambiance relaxing & enjoyable. Highly recommend this lovely place to lunch!
What a delightful culinary experience you'll not want to miss we during a visit to Charlevoix! We made reservations (recommended) and were treated to a waterfront table with a great view of boat traffic sailing under the drawbridge. The historic boulder stonework and fireplace added to the bright and festive dining atmosphere. They have an extensive cocktail and wine selection of which we took great advantage of! We leisurely dined on shrimp cocktail appetizers, lobster roll and whitefish dinners, and topped it off the evening with an incredible dessert and specialty coffee. The service was very attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. Highly recommend this dining venue for anyone travelling through the Charlevoix, Mi area.
Fresh seafood. The service is very good. Food was amazing. My rum runner was amazing. Overall great experience!
The restaurant has a great view from the patio. The menu offered variety and the food was delicious. We and our teenager daughters enjoyed it! One daughter left her D&D dice behind. When we returned the staff searched high and low and they were found. We highly recommend this place.
Delicious food and great service with an awesome view of the lake channel! The super nice people that work here were able to get us a nice table for our anniversary with just a few minutes wait when there was a line out the door (they don't do reservations). Everything that we ordered was delicious! We especially liked the seafood chowder, French onion soup, and fish and chips made with whitefish. My wife was a fan of the escargot. Service was quick and friendly.
Got here at 2pm on a Sunday afternoon in June. There was a table available right away on the deck overlooking the channel, so we sat there and enjoyed the views. It was interesting to watch the passing boats and see the drawbridge in action. We ordered the walleye sandwich, steak salad, and a kids pizza meal. The food was all great and prepared properly. Service was fine. Definitely recommend this if you're able to dine on the deck.
Great views and ambiance right on the channel. Food was delicious all around. Yes, it was pricey but not unexpected for the location. The kids meals were $12 and, though the menu mentioned only fries as a side, they also came with a beautiful fruit cup that improved the value of the meal.
We had a wonderful experience at the Weathervane. I called a few days in advance since my son had a dairy allergy. When I got ahold of the manager, the put me on hold and confirmed all the options and modifications to make it dairy free for him. We had a reservation and were seated immediately with a window view of the bridge. That made my son very happy since he loves watching the boats and the ferry. He was able to order the pizza with no cheese (how he normally eats pizza) and said this was a great pizza. He was also able to have the baguette bread. Our food was amazing too. I had the walleye and my husband had the prime rib. Good came out very quick. Servers were lovely. Would come back!
Came here for our anniversary dinner and had a very delicious and enjoyable meal. We had the surf and turf and it was one of the best meals I’ve ever had. Our server Todd did a great job. He was very friendly, fun and knowledgeable of the menu and drinks. Between the delicious food and the great service I would highly recommend the Weathervane restaurant.
Simply amazing. Food was 5 star, elegant and sophisticated. Our waitress was very friendly and kind. The atmosphere was 2nd to none being by the water watching the bridge go up and down. We were there to celebrate our birthdays and vacation, didn't disappoint. Can't wait to come back!
Our first time here and we were very happy with everything! Brenda was incredible! There was not one bite that was anything but amazing!! Can not wait to go back! We had the calamari, squash soup, root vegetable salad, blue cheese wedge salad, salmon and gnocchi and lemon pepper whitefish. Recommend the unshackled Cabernet!! Perfect experience!!!
Great atmosphere! Quiet and low-lighting make it an intimate place to relax and enjoy the diverse selection of dishes. You can enjoy a meal for anywhere from $15 to $50, depending on what your budget allows. A savory selection of cocktails and non-alcoholic beverages to choose from. My favorite place to visit every time I'm in Charlevoix! Reservations are not always necessary, depending on how busy they are. If it's summertime, or there's an event in town, you may want to call ahead.
This is my third visit and once again, loved the food, atmosphere and staff! Our waitress was wonderful- did not rush us at all and took excellent care! The drinks were incredibly impressive! And the food equally so! Yes it is a higher priced restaurant but everyone in our 7 person party agrees it was worth every cent!
Our last meal in Charlevoix, the atmosphere and the view were so good! The service was nice, we really like our waitress and the host. They are dog friendly restaurant! I almost got salad and whitefish egg roll, but changed my mind last minute and got their feature menu: Salmon and Hazelnut instead. The first couple bites I was like, I don't know what it is but then...it's very good! The tomato stuffs on top was very refreshing! Mashed potatoes was good as well. My husband got bacon jam burger and fries, he said everything's perfect, usually he doesn't like the egg with his burger but it was very good this time. We were happy with our choice tonight!
Loved this place. Came here for early for Sunday lunch and the place quickly was filled with other people. Beautiful views of the water. Our eyes were a bit bigger than our stomachs and we ordered quite a bit of food. It took about 15 minutes to get the apps but everything we were served was amazing. Would recommend.
I think you're mostly paying for the locale here. My food was good, but not on the level I would expect at the price point. The view WAS nice though, I can't argue that!
I believe in being honest and offering help where I can. Now, in no way, shape or form is this a negative review, just a few observations as i see them. For having THE premier spot for being the best restaurant in town, a couple of things just fell a little flat for me. Walking in, it looked a little dated, not untidy, dirty or unkept, just complacent. You can tell it's been here for a while. I ordered the Shrimp Pappardelle, and added the sautéed morel mushrooms. It was a good dish, the pasta was very tender, but not over done, the shrimp were good sized and cooked perfectly and the roasted tomatoes were excellent. But for a small $38 plate of pasta, three shrimp was a disappointment. Now, maybe it's because I live on the gulf coast where 6 shrimp is the minimum, and maybe I'm just spoiled. I added the morels because I NEVER see them on a menu, and we're on a pretty special vacation, so I accepted the $18 add on. And don't get me wrong they were great, sautéed with the right amount of garlic, they were young and fresh with a slight nuttyness. They just looked sad and lonely on their own little plate. It was a great pairing with the pasta, so I would have preferred if they'd be dressed and plated together. We also ordered the Filet Mignon, which was incredibly tender and grilled to perfection. The minced onion and roasted tomato topping was a great touch. The filet was nestled in soft fluffy whipped potatoes and the demi-glaze brought it all together. Very nice plating. Now, saving the best for last. The Crab Cakes were the best I've ever had! Again, maybe they're just prepaired differently in the South, where most of the time what you get is a cake of fishy crabby favored stuffing that's been taken out of the freezer and dropped in the deep frier. But let me tell you, these are not that at all! These Crab Cakes are light and fresh, not gummy and soft. The crust on the outside was just right and nest of shoestring sweet potatoes gave it that crispy touch to finish. Well done!
The atmosphere and service here can’t be beat. A lovely place to have a meal and watch the boats pass under the bridge. Drinks were delicious (limoncello gin fizz and a strawberry wine spritz). Both were refreshing and not sweet- perfect. Our salads (Caesar and house) were fresh and the homemade Caesar dressing was great. My husband enjoyed the prime rib and although my whitefish was a bit dry and overcooked it was still an enjoyable meal overall. We would definitely go back.
4 stars for atmosphere- they have old table and chairs outside and not cleaning up that well. It would be 5 stars if they updated outside patio to match the quality of resturant then be 5. The service was okay food- plating was poor and especially for kids meals. Kids burger doesn’t even come with fries or anything- fries 4 dollars more. Wallet was okay but not much taste for 45 dollars. Still a historic gem and that’s why it’s busy.
The new owners of the Weathervane restaurant don’t get it… They were able to provide excellent service, clean environment, but the food was not good. In fact, the form of Weathervane was just OK but far exceeds we are now getting at the new Weathervane. We’re so looking forward to having the white fish on the cedar plank with the potatoes around it. No, now we get an average plate like a cafeteria with some mashed potatoes and a small white fish on top. The muscles that we had last night had a funny smell to them. The appetizer Lamb chops are now smothered in a cherry sauce… Form of Weathervane had grilled. And delicious lamb chops. I do not recommend this restaurant if you enjoy good food. However, it is a good environment and it’s lovely to sit along the Pine River Canal.
We haven’t been to the Weathervane in 2-3 years. The patio was absolutely stunning with the renovations and updates! Bravo. The menu was a little disappointing to be honest. I totally miss the Cherry Ribs, Cherry chilled soup and complimentary bread. The menu also seemed somewhat limited. While the actual food itself was good, I felt the portions were very small. Also, $8 for a mediocre bread basket is outrageous. (The butter was amazing though!) I wished the quality of the food matched the incredible atmosphere of the patio like it used to.
The Weathervane is looking a bit dated. We ordered the Lobster Roll. For the price I expected more. I should not be charged to upgrade chips to fries. It was not served with a salad or Cole slaw. The brioche bun was dry and not good. It was disappointing.
We had a nice dinner there and although the menu is a bit sparse when tourist season ends, the meals are still prepared professionally and with the utmost quality and attention to detail. Our server was fantastic and knowledgeable and suggested things that we ended up liking very much. Table faced the drawbridge and water, great view.
Would of been a great experience. My wife and I stopped for dinner. Her food was brought out hot, my very expensive steak was brought out cold, probably 75°. They took it back and reheated it somehow and brought it back out to me and the texture was like rubber. I talked to the server and asked to take it off my bill. They did take it off my bill. I still left the server a good tip as it was not her fault. Always tip your server good but I wish she would of been more sympathetic. All and all, my wife's dinner was good and I helped her eat it. Total cost for app, glass of wine, and her meal plus tip almost $90.
NOT DOG FRIENDLY - no matter how small or polite or well-behaved your dogs are. We Google’d dog friendly places in Charlevoix and this restaurant came up. We walked up and saw a dog bowl on the patio and were excited to have lunch here. Unfortunately upon walking up to the Host stand, the Host informed us that there were, “No Dog Friendly Tables available today.” He repeated himself when I asked if there were other days when they were dog friendly. Very bizarre policy & extremely condescending attitude considering there were tons of outdoor tables available. Update: I changed my star rating from 1 to 3 since the restaurant did have the courtesy to respond back to this review. Sounds like if you have a dog that you want to bring with you here, the best advice is to call the restaurant in advance and find out if it’s your dogs’ lucky day or not! ; )
The Weathervane is definitely a spot for the experience—beautiful location right on the water, upscale look and super cute inside, with fancier service that makes you feel like you’re somewhere special. It’s expensive (like… really expensive), which would be totally fine if the food lived up to the price tag. I ordered the $52 filet, and unfortunately, it was overcooked—not terrible, but definitely not the mind-blowing, perfectly prepared meal you’d hope for at that price. Overall, the food was fine, just not memorable. Still, if you’re looking for a fancy spot with great ambiance and don’t mind paying more for the atmosphere than the meal, it’s worth checking out.
The service, atmosphere, and aesthetic rate 5 stars but the food brings it down to a 3. It comes off as high end with a wonderful patio and view even from inside. The food on the other hand is lacking the same high end quality. A $52 filet mignon should be cooked properly and come out hot, it did not and was not. The risotto with morels added came out cold as well and oddly with the mushrooms on the side. We did not ask for it that way. The server was kind enough to get a new hot batch for us. The only meal that actually came out hot was the chicken. The drinks we had were delicious although a bit over priced, smoked old fashioned $17 and margarita $18. Overall we probably won't be back but I wouldn't discourage someone else from giving it a try with the preface of the above.
5:30 reservations for 2 Valentine’s Day. After a very brief wait in the bar, we were seated. Nice 4-top near the window. Server was a bit abrupt approaching our table, asking if we were ready to order. Took our order for Whitefish dish and Sea Bass Valentine’s Day special. I was ready for another drink, but wasn’t asked if I’d like one before dinner was presented to us. My wife was served my shrimp appetizer which was only fair in taste. Then, she was served my salad which was room temperature, not cold. My Sea Bass was not fully cooked, it was translucent. Server was very busy and did not check back. Desert was server without my wife being asked if she’d like a desert as well, so she didn’t order one. Overall, service wasn’t what we expected. Food was fair. Carpeting was nice. But, I liked the look of the old timbers, unpainted. Just
The restaurant had beautiful views of the river. The waitstaff was very good. The food was the issue. My wife ordered the risotto. Which was undercooked or the rice wad left out to dry all day before it was served. My sandwich was ok. If the same attention was given to the food as it was the building, there would be a line a mile long outside the door.
We were there about 2 weeks ago. I ordered a chicken sandwich and fries. The chicken tasted like fish. The fry oil was dirty. Chicken shouldn't taste like fish. The fries were OK but a very small amount for the price. The glasses of pop were very small. We needed refills but our server rarely came to the table and dint have time to do it. Overall it was over priced and and gross.
I won’t be back The food was awful The menu has changed new owners No Italian nor ribs No salads with meals No greeting to our seats No enthusiasm from waitstaff. We have been coming here since 2000 My 4 year old was served his drink in an adult glass made of glass. With a straw. That’s a no no Portions are smaller Charging for breadbaskets It’s obviously about the money not the meals
I have never had a bad meal from here, until tonight. In fact, of the five meals our group ordered, 4 were intolerable. The strip steak was incredibly salty, the salmon was fishy and the sauce did nothing to help it, the gnocchi was bland at best, and the whitefish was the worst of all of them. Again, never had a bad meal, but it seems like there were a couple of things going wrong here. There was a new menu, not the one posted a month ago, but one with a grand total of 5 entrees. I'm not sure that the chef knew how to cook any of it. The second part was that it was either being renovated or about to be renovated, based on the construction materials in the front parking lot. Maybe it's new ownership, maybe it was just our food, but 4 out of 5 bad dishes speak loudly. We have gone here 1 or 2 times a year, but for now, we will not be returning.
We booked this reservation on Open Table and didn’t have any issues with the hostess or check in process. The lady that checked us in was quite polite and helpful. The table was near a window which was nice to see the boats on the water. Our waitress was a bit abrupt and not overly friendly. She seemed to be judging us for our more casual attire than others and seemed upset that we ordered water as neither of us drink. We ordered the Risotto with chicken as well as the surf and turf. Both were mediocre at best. We were celebrating and our server didn’t offer any dessert or anything. It seems to be a place that the elders frequent as it’s been around a long time. It smells old but, has had some recent updates. I would have rather spent $$ at a chain steakhouse vs. this. It wasn’t worth it.
Don’t recommend it at all! Ok food, but service and management supervision poor. 3 couples in our group. We ALL ordered the same fish dish. Came out at the same time but one of the orders OBVIOUSLY half the size! Waitress didn’t seem to notice or care. Said we’d have to order and pay for another if we wanted the same as the others even after she gone to her manager. VERY DISAPPOINTED. Wondered why the restaurant so empty. Now I know.
We had a horrible experience on Valentine's Day for dinner! The manager that runs this place is absolutely terrible he has no clue how to run a restaurant. Worst customer service ever! Our food was terrible! My white fish was never cooked! Drinks took forever. They had a wedding reception on one of the busiest days of the year for a restaurant. Never got plates for bread service. Our waiter was covering so many tables and still did an amazing job! We will never be back! The only good thing about this place is the view!
