It’s the bazaar of Egypt. A unique shopping experience to interact with the stall owners. Brush your backs with strangers heading past different directions in the narrow paths while avoiding cart trolleys. Plenty of souvenirs, oils and spices if you fancy to explore. Beware as it is very crowded even in the day time. You can find a bargain here but that is if you are willing to find them.
Beautiful bazaar with a lot to offer. Spices, perfumes, jewelry, souvenirs galore and so much more. Mellow vibe compared to some.
Enjoy a great shopping experience in local authentic bazaar at Cairo Egypt. You can get whatever souvenir for friends and relative here. Of course, you need to learn on howvto bargain a good buying price.
As an expat staying in Cairo, I have to say that Khan El Khalili is my favourite spots to walk around! Here is my advice for tourists... If you are sensitive to loud vendors trying to sell you their merchandise and if you hate big crowds, avoid Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, especially after sunset. If you want to experience the Cairo chaos (which is my favourite thing about Khan El Khalili), practice your haggling skills with merchants and joke around with them, then you definitely want to go on Fridays and Saturdays after sunset! Another thing, I often see big buses filled with tourists being baited into following their "guides" into various shops... not their fault to he honest, but be careful and remember, you are not obliged to buy anything as 95% of the items there are available at the international airport.. The unfortunate part is not really the scamming, it's the fact that most tourists end up leaving Cairo without truly experiencing the true Khan el Khalili, as well as all the other local souks that are literally a few minutes walk from Khan el khalili, and those locals souks attract the real locals, and they are a lot less persistent in their sales pitch as the shops in Khan el Khalili!! The main event is simply to walk around and have fun discovering their culture! Speaking of which, if you want to experience true local food, go to Farhat restaurant. It's a hole in the wall/street restaurant, but the hammam mahshi is truly a one of a kind experience, and it's the only restaurant that I trust for this meal!! Make sure to ask for it fresh!!! There is also Ahel el Saada restaurant that have super loud music shows, but don't go there if you can't handle loud oriental music lol. I personally did not like the other restaurants in the area, but that's my personal choice. Don't be afraid to get lost and explore beyond Khan el Khalili, so many locals souks (yes better prices than Khan El Khalili) that are connected to Khan, but most people don't end up seeing it because they are in a rush or simply because the tour guides have no financial interest to do so.
This place deserve a visit if you are in Cairo! This market has been here since the 12th century, and you can still see the original wall and gates! Inside the walls there are some amazing old buildings and a lot of small store selling mostly souvenirs. There are also place where you can eat or stop for a tea or coffee.
A bazar straight out of the 1001 nights! Don't forget to haggle your way through, as most of the vendors will try to con tourists unfortunately.. Was great to see that part of Cairo though, with loads of Madrasas and mosques nearby
Do not expect the same experience you see on Instagram and TikTok. This is a highly busy area. It is a lively market with a lot to buy with cheap prices. There are many different small streets to walk down. Cramped spaces and many tourists so be patient. Getting in and out could take some time as traffic is always busy.
Interesting place to be with all souvenirs shop where they try to rip you off with their very high prices ! You can try to negotiate but they put the prices so high you can never get the real price just! But it remain as most historical place to visit specially during night time !
An over crowded local egyptian market. We have been to multiple souk in luxor, aswan and other places dk egypt so didn’t feel anything new. It’s cramped and heavily crowded. We visited in evening. There are lots of shops, variety of items across the market, as usual huge bargaining. Since we visited already so many souk this was not new for us but if it’s ur first time I would say it’s a must visit to experience egyptian culture. It’s a web of narrow roads with close knitted shops, easy to get lost. There are some cafe and restaurant also in various lanes which is also very busy. After sunset the lights lit up and makes this area more beautiful. Shopping wise I would say yes there is a lot lot of it but you need good selection and negotiation skills. The sellers are constantly trying to lure u and sell their products. Personally I loved the al souk of aswan better than any other local market across egypt. It was not as crowded and was not narrow to give enough space for the crowds to move.
A must-visit place when visiting Egypt to really experience the culture. We were shown around initially by a local guide who talked to us about the history and showed us some of the landmarks around the market. We were then given some free time to explore on our own. It definitely can be very overwhelming especially for females on their own or in small female only groups. Be prepared to be called ‘Shakira’ a lot, and for vendors to be shouting for you to come in. I didn’t find them too in your face if you didn’t look their way. Just politely shake your head or say no and carry on walking. If you went in they often didn’t take no for an answer and you had to just leave if you didn’t see anything you wanted. It went against my ‘Britishness’ but I was told later that that is what everyone does if they don’t want to buy. Personally I didn’t buy anything as I did struggle to find anything authentically Egyptian in the shops I visited, and I did want something that wasn’t shipped in from elsewhere and sold at a premium. (I was trying to find a wood or stone carved statue of the cat god Bastet and at one point had a vendor trying to insist an obviously resin version was real Amber despite it being bright pink and weighing next to nothing.) I think if I’d had longer to look around I’d have found something I was happy with but overall it was a great experience just wandering around and taking in the sights, sounds and delicious food smells of the place.
We went in evening, round 7pm and were disappointed with the choice of the shops in market. Of course, be prepared to be invited on almost every step to come inside. I guess of you seen other great hazard in Marrakesh and Istanbul , this will be yet another market but a bit less impressive. Still, you will find some craftsman shops with some choices you might like. Next to the market you will find a beautiful building that is a mosque worth having a look.
Quite the experience. Beautiful vendor stalls and lots of little hooka lounges and tea shops. Would have been alot nicer if you weren't constantly being harassed by the salesmen constantly. Makes it hard to appreciate the place. Pretty cool shopping spot nonetheless. Best to not talk to anyone unless you actually want to buy something..
Visited most famous and very oldest market in the world. Best place to buy lot of Egyptian souvenir but bit costly. Best time to visit - from Evening to night.
