Tiny spot with crazy good noodles. Super friendly service and the food was amazing. Chewy, flavorful noodles, delicious broth and tons of different options. Everything I saw come out looked fantastic. Lots of people getting the fried chicken so will try that next time. Use the waitlist ahead of time but be prepared to wait. Also wouldn’t bring too big of a group as this place is really small.
I came here on a busy Saturday afternoon based on a friend's recommendation from like a year ago and I'm glad I did. If you're coming in a group of 3 or more you should definitely put your name on the yelp wait list ahead of time. However, if you're dining solo and there is a counter spot they can take you right in. Sometimes dining alone has some benefits. Atmosphere is definitely got the vibes of a small family-run Japanese restaurant with just enough seats and some wood countertop seats. Service was fast and friendly. I ordered their kaarage chicken and beef Curry udon. Their kaarage was crispy, juicy and large chunks...if I wasn't doing yoga after this I would have had a beer. The curry udon was very flavorful and filled with tons of beef, green, white onions and some nice chewy udon noodles. If I'm back in this area later in the summer I'll try their cold udon dipping noodles. Good portions for the food, prices were okay, but not the cheapest. I'll be back for more if I'm in the area.
My favorite Japanese noodle restaurant is this one, as I always go there every time I'm in the area. Having eaten their soba and udon, it is hard to eat other restaurants' soba after having tasted theirs. They make the soba, everything from scratch and cut everything by hand. There are some dishes that have yamakake or grated yam on the menu and that’s what I come for. This dish is the one of the traditional Japanese soba/udon that can be also served in Japan. Their seasmeed tofu is also something I like very much. In most cases, it's a house made product that sells out very quickly because it's made in house. Considering the fact that this is a small place, it gets crowded quite quickly, so I recommend that you go as soon as it opens or before the rush of lunch or dinner hours begins.
I love the food and service here. I like the Katsu Curry more than the Shabu Shabu one since it's more savory. The salad with salmon skin is also amazing and it is a good appetizer. I also ordered the Assorted Tempura but I don't really recommend it since it will be a bit too much to eat all the sides and finish your bowl, unless you go as a group because I struggled to finish my bowl after all the tempura filling my stomach and, you know, fried food fill it quick. Overall, probably the best Udon place I ever tried in OC.
Meiji Seimen, a famous Japanese restaurant in Costa Mesa, is a hidden gem for authentic Japanese cuisine. Nestled in an old-fashioned plaza, the restaurant's unassuming exterior belies the incredible dining experience inside. Ambiance and Seating The restaurant is small and cozy, but the limited seating can lead to long waits during rush hours like weekday evenings, weekends, and holidays. To save time, it’s highly recommended to join the Yelp waitlist before heading over. Due to the tight seating, pets and dogs are not allowed, but the amazing food more than makes up for it. What We Tried Cold Spicy Soba: This might just be the best soba in town. The dipping sauce is flavorful with raw egg and elevates the dish, making it a must-try. Pairing the soba with a side of tempura adds an extra layer of texture and taste—highly recommended! Sukiyaki Beef Curry Bowl: A fantastic combination of sukiyaki-marinated beef bulgogi and perfectly seasoned curry over rice with raw egg. The flavors blend beautifully, creating a hearty and satisfying dish. Specials and Desserts Meiji Seimen frequently offers specials, like the Creamy Lobster & Scallops Udon and Kimchi Nabe Udon, which are January 2025 highlights. Their menu also includes a selection of hand-made desserts, which are absolutely worth trying for a sweet ending to your meal. Service The staff are friendly and efficient, serving dishes quickly despite the restaurant's popularity. Tips Arrive early or use the Yelp waitlist to avoid long lines. Pair your main dish with tempura for an enhanced dining experience. Don’t skip the desserts—they’re the perfect complement to the meal! Though the seating is tight and the location modest, Meiji Seimen stands out for its incredible flavors and welcoming service. It’s a must-visit for Japanese food lovers in Costa Mesa!
Love this place. First time here. Super authentic legit Soba / Udon place. All hand crafted. Chicken Tempura Curry Udon / Shabu Shabu Spicy Udon / Classic Tempura Udon. All fantastic. Does justice to our 10yrs in Japan. Wish we lived closer to here. But will mos def. Shout out to Scarlett, my number one fan for reading this ;-)
I had been wanting to visit this place for a long time but always hesitated because of the long wait. Luckily, I was first on the waiting list and got in as soon as they opened. One of my friends, who is an expert in Japanese cuisine, insisted that the best way to judge a good udon restaurant is by trying their basic udon. After taking a bite, he paused for a few seconds and then praised it as the closest taste to authentic Japanese udon he has had outside of Japan. I ordered the Nabeyaki Udon, Shabu Shabu Udon, Chicken Karaage, and a Tempura Set to share with my friends. The tempura set, in particular, was absolutely amazing and highly recommended. The chicken karaage was also delicious. For the Nabeyaki Udon, I chose the medium spice level, which had a nice kick and was full of flavor. This place is now officially my favorite udon restaurant, and I can’t wait to come back. Highly recommended!
This is my second visit and it's just as superb as the first. I'm picky and have complaints at every restaurant I go to, but for this place I have NO NOTES. On my first visit I got the curry udon and I thought there was no way to top it. Today I tried the special- kimchi udon. I would eat that every day for the rest of my life and die happy. The broth was so flavourful and complex. The udon noodles are perfection. Every ingredient went together so well. I'll be here every chance I get. come early- there will be a wait-list
This is my 2nd time visiting Meiji. The food was so good and I totally forgot to take some pictures and write the review on my 1st visit. Today I took some pictures and wrote this review. This place has best udon in town. I ordered 4 most popular dishes, beef Shabu Shabu Udon, Shrimp Tempura Udon, Fried Squid Legs, and Fried Chicken. They are all very tasty. Their udon noodles are handmade and the soup broth is so delicious. The restaurant has ambience of Japanese tastes of hometown. This restaurant is not very big but they do offer online waiting list. I would recommend joining their waiting list before you visit the restaurant. Definitely will come back again!
To start we ordered the fried chicken and assorted tempura. The fried chicken was our absolute favorite, the crunchiness, juiciness and flavor was great. We then ordered the Nabeyaki udon and the SP Katsu. Both were great, but the udon itself was so good. The broth and the noodles were memorable. I’m excited to come back and try more dishes! This restaurant seems really popular and gets packed so definitely add yourself to the Yelp waitlist if you can.
Love this place. First time here. "Super authentic legit Soba / Udon place" that's was my BF present for me about this place! Last night was my first visit ! Cuz I give him a requested that I wanted something not too heavy but fresh and tasty! He took me here! It was taken 30-40 minutes drive from my house on Sunday night! Everything on the menu looks great 😃 I want to try all of it but ended up with beef udon the soup was delicious 😋🤤 I finished all of it. Especially the fries squid 🐙 legs was so.. so.. good 👍🏻 I really love it! Highly recommended 💯 and I will be back for sure!
BEST UDON I've ever had!! The first time I came to meiji, I had originally planned to go to Mitsuwa for udon. I arrived at Mitsuwa just minutes after their udon vendor had closed at 7pm, and was really bummed out. As a white guy, white as rice really, wanted to try some authentic Japanese udon, and I thought Mitsuwa was the only place. So I looked up online "best udon 92646" and one of the recommended results was Meiji. I thought to myself "Well, I hope it's as good as the Mitsuwa reviews." And wow. I was SHOCKED at how delicious and authentic this restaurant is. I had never been to an udon spot before, and I wasn't even sure how to order it properly. But the staff was kind and accommodating and assisted me with my order. I went with the "Beef shabu shabu level 2 spice" and I was so excited and surprised when I took my first bite. The depth of flavor was so rich in umami and beef, perfectly spicy for an introduction to the dish, I was so satisfied with it that I went back 2 days later and ordered the same thing. I've been here so many times since then, that my current order now is: "Beef shabu shabu level 3 spice with large udon" and sometimes if I'm starving I'll order extra meat. Every time I've eaten here, I've always been so satisfied where I will literally plan my diet around how many times weekly or per week that I'll order 😂 The regular patrons that eat at the restaurant are also very kind, and happy to recommend their personal favorite dishes. I've yet to try their soba noodles, as typically I order to go, and soba is a dine in dish only, But next time I am fortunate enough to dine in, I already look forward to trying their traditional soba. It's so special to have authentic food like this in the Costa Mesa area, I've already annoyed all of my friends and family recommending this dish and restaurant to anyone that I think would enjoy it. Now I understand the appeal for udon, takoyaki, and okonomiyaki traditional Japanese food culture. So fortunate and happy to have discovered this hidden gem. Tips from my experience: If ordering to go: order online ahead of time. You will have to have a card to pay for your order online before picking it up, which is slightly annoying and inconvenient in my personal opinion, but it does save time. For dining in: this is a very popular restaurant, with quite a small lobby for dine in seating. Restaurant closes after lunch service and opens again at 5:30pm for dinner service, So not only is space limited inside the lobby, but you will have to sign in on their wait-list on the tablet they have just in front of their entrance doors. Wait time seems to be around 20 minutes for both to go and dine in, So I would plan for at least that number of minutes for either engagement with going there. All in all, SEVERELY recommend this restaurant, Especially if you're white as rice American like myself, and haven't experienced this amazing flavor profile of food before. It is a bit salty, so if you're sensitive of that I would just be cautious, But man, it is absolutely delicious regardless. Ain't no better place for udon than here. Shoot man, I'm going back tonight 😂
Put yourself on their waiting list! People got there and start lining up before they open. We arrived when they open and we were already #8 in line. We waited 45 mins before being seated and the line was twice as long when we left. It's a very small restaurant but so worth the hype. The Nabeyaki udon was absolutely delicious. Such a clear broth full of flavor with chewy udon noodles. It was a big bowl and I love that it has enoki mushrooms, fish cake, an egg, and a delicious shrimp tempura. Can't wait to go back again. Drooling just thinking about it.
First time visiting this spot and we wished we’d visited sooner! Everything we ordered was delicious, we had the shabu udon with egg, eel box and a shrimp tempura. We’ve been missing authentic Japanese food since our trip to Japan and this hit the spot, will definitely be back. Wait was around 30+ minutes so might be worth trying to get there early to avoid the crowds.
Wow everything we tried was top notch and service was amazing. Sesame tofu was a pleasant surprise that had everyone wanting more. Shabu shabu udon was seasoned to perfection and it even came with ponzu for the meat! Nabeyaki udon was spot on as well. You can tell they take care to make the dashi very well. Tempura chicken curry udon broth was also not too thick and not too salty, which was very pleasant too. Of course the chicken kaarage was super well seasoned and not heavily battered. Perfection. I’d love to come back to try more. Very few places do udon so well.
One of the best places to get udon or soba outside of Japan. My wife ordered the shabu shabu udon and I got the katsu curry udon. We also ordered a side of the kaarage. The shabu shabu udon is a classic and one I have ordered multiple times. They also serve it with some extra tare so you can season it to your liking. The katsu curry udon came with a nice, thick pork cutlet and you can customize the spice level of the curry. Their kaarage is so tasty and crunchy and they give you a lot of chicken compared to other places. This place is always my go-to if I'm in the area and craving some Japanese noodles. If you're prone to making a mess, be sure to ask for a bib! The owner has a sense of humor with customers who get messy.
Arrived about 30 minutes before opening and people were already lining up to join the waitlist. By the time the doors opened, there were around 14 parties ahead — a clear sign this place is popular for a reason. Thankfully, we were seated right away and started ordering immediately. We tried the Nabeyaki Udon, Shabu Shabu Udon, karaage, beer, and sake. They even brought out beer snacks, which was a fun and unexpected touch. Every dish was outstanding. The noodles were fresh and perfectly chewy, the broths were packed with umami and depth, and the karaage was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Service was friendly, quick, and attentive even with the rush. The food came out hot and fast, and everything tasted incredibly fresh. Everything we had was a 5 out of 5, no question. Amazing udon, great sides, and a well-run team.
Delicious and bouncy udon! Brought me right back to Japan. Got the Shabu Shabu udon and it’s a good portion — lots of meat on top. Make sure to join the yelp waitlist before you arrive! My party of 4 came on a Saturday afternoon and the waited for 80 minutes!! Luckily we joined the waitlist before leaving home. Also, when you arrive at the restaurant, be sure to check in on their iPad so they don’t skip you on the list.
We came here to try their cold soba noodle, the sauce is ice cold and savory which we like a lot. Their noodle is house made and is chewy. The chicken carriage is surprisingly good, very juicy and crispy, also came in with a lot of pieces. Tempura was okay, it doesn’t come with any sauce but you can ask the server to grab you tempura sauce.
Tip: Add yourself to the Yelp waitlist ahead of time and check in when you arrive at the restaurant. The restaurant itself is really small, so there'll most likely be a long wait during prime time. Scan QR code available to view menu. Service and food delivery time were quick. Started off with the fried chicken appetizer, and it was good. Lightly battered, yet crispy chicken served with a side of sweet chili based sauce. For entrees, we had the Shabu Shabu udon, Nabeyaki udon, and a small bowl of Sukiyaki Beef Curry. They were all quite tasty and filling. My favorite was the Nabeyaki udon, which was flavorful with a slight hint of spice. It was plentiful enough to maybe share. Overall, it was good and worth the wait.
Total Score: 8.15 Bathroom: 3.5/5 Fairly clean bathroom Customer Service: 4.5/5 Very welcoming and refilled my waters and checked up on me Ambiance: 4.5/5 Very cozy Japanese bar vibes Food: 4.75/5 The kimchi nabe udon was sooo good. The soup was sooo yum. Nice umami and spice. Udon was good texture Wow: 0/1 Normal udon restaurant Total Score = BR + CS + 2*AM + 5*FOOD + WOW
I had the cold soba, and it was quite good. If you’re looking for Japanese-style udon in the area, I would recommend this place. However, it’s not somewhere you can eat comfortably at a relaxed pace. I understand that there are many people waiting, but clearing our bowls while we were still preparing to pay didn’t feel appropriate. I would recommend this restaurant only if you want to come in, eat, and leave quickly—it’s not a place for a leisurely meal.
Overall, it was delicious udon, but the kimchi and udon hot pot was too sweet. I also need to be careful because I had an upset stomach after eating it. 🥲.. Other than that, the staff was friendly and the atmosphere of the store was good.
