Artist Point is absolutely beautiful. You can see ice field and many mountain ridges. The rocks on the mountain have different colors, which makes the scenery even prettier. The forecast said it would be rainy and foggy today, but the blue sky and sunshine made it even more stunning. There are many trails, so you can easily find one that suits you.
Officially in love with Mt. Baker and Mt. Shuksan! After a day of hiking the Chain Lakes Trail we were able to have a sunset cookout with 360° stunning views! Camped near the top in the gravel parking, we had a rooftop tent and no one bothered us. Only pit toilets available on the mountain. All you need is a NW Forest pass up there. Finished the trip backpacking into Ptarmigan Ridge, set up camp next to the lake off to the left at the top and then finished the ridge hike. Very memorable couple days!
Paved road to the parking area, but the parking lot fills up quickly on the weekends. Choice of two main trails: chain lakes loop or ptarmigan ridge which is an out and back. The ridge trail is best saved for late summer / fall as there can be significant snow on the trail earlier in the season.
We have visited Mt. Baker and Artist Point multiple times in various seasons over the years, but the latest trip was exceptional, beautiful and breathtaking! Mountains, snow, clouds, blue sky, ponds, trees, and picnic spots at visitor center. PNW is full of pure nature and one could never feel disappointed! 🏞 Tip: Arrive before 7am to get a parking spot. PS: Kids friendly
This is my husband’s favorite spot in Washington state. The parking may be crowded but you will find a spot. The top always has snow. Despite the crowd you will get a peaceful spot to enjoy the beautiful views of the glacier and Mount Baker. Don’t forget to stop at Picture lake on the way
This is a gorgeous spot for breathtaking views! I would love to come back up in the dark to see what the starry skies look like. There are tons of trails for hiking in the area and toilets available at the parking lot (no water/just a toilet). Parking is at a premium in the summer, you may find yourself circling for some time to get a spot or walking some distance from one of the precarious road side parking spots. There are summer cafe/gift shops at the ski resort open over the weekends with proper bathroom facilities.
I visited Artist Point, and it’s a must-see for stunning views in Washington’s Mt. Baker Wilderness. At 5,000+ feet, you get epic 360-degree vistas of Mount Baker and Mount Shuksan. It’s a photographer’s dream, especially with Picture Lake’s Mount Shuksan reflection nearby. **Experience and Facts** The views of snow-capped peaks and glaciers are breathtaking. Mount Baker, an active volcano with 14 glaciers, and Shuksan dominate the landscape. Wildlife like bears and mountain goats roam the 117,000-acre wilderness. The Mount Baker Highway, once a logging route, is now a scenic byway. **Timings and Access** The road to Artist Point opens late June to early October, depending on snow. Arrive by 9 a.m. to beat crowds—parking fills fast. In winter, snowshoe 5 miles from Mount Baker Ski Area. Heather Meadows Cafe (15 minutes away) is open Friday-Monday, 11:00 a.m.–5:30 p.m. **Weather** Summer brings wildflowers but cooler temps and sudden fog or clouds. Layer up! Winter is snowy with avalanche risks—check NWAC forecasts if snowshoeing. **Facilities** - **Parking**: Northwest Forest Pass ($30/year or $5/day) required. Lot gets crowded. - **Restrooms**: Available at trailhead, but not always clean. - **Food**: None at Artist Point; pack snacks or visit Heather Meadows Cafe or Glacier’s North Fork Brewery. - **Visitor Center**: Glacier Public Service Center (24 miles away) has maps, open Friday-Sunday, 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. - **Camping**: Banned May 15–November 15; nearby campgrounds need reservations. **Hiking** Trails suit all levels. Artist Ridge to Huntoon Point (1.5 miles) is easy with great views. Chain Lakes Loop (6.5 miles) offers alpine lakes, while Ptarmigan Ridge (9 miles) is tougher, nearing glaciers. Winter snowshoeing requires avalanche prep. **Tips** - Wear hiking boots; trails can be rocky or wet. - Bring water, snacks, and layers—weather shifts fast. - Check road and trail conditions (fs.usda.gov or wta.org). - Sunset at Picture Lake is a photography highlight. Artist Point is unreal—perfect for hiking or just soaking in views. Plan for crowds and weather, and it’s a trip you won’t forget!
I went here in early July and didn't expect there to be this much snow. I could see the snow-covered mountains on the way there and when I got to the parking lot at the top, there was really a lot of snow. It was the most beautiful snow-covered mountain I've ever seen in my life. The weather was cool and not cold. I want to go there again in the fall.
Enjoyed this place in July and there’s still a lot of snow on the ground!! Bring a sled for the kids to enjoy the snow! Surprisingly, it wasn’t too cold for me…and I’m from Florida! The views are stunning! There are trails here that lead to Table Mountain and Mt Baker. The drive up is easy and we stopped at Picture Lake on the way. Lots of parking space and there are restrooms. Make sure to allocate enough time for hiking. Sunset is usually a little past 9pm in summer here…so lots of time to enjoy nature!
Yes, it takes 3 hours to dive up here, but it’s so beautiful! Totally worth it!! It is a visual treat and hiking gem. We did it in summer, fall and winter!! The main trail is a moderate, well-defined out‑and‑back that rewards with big views of Baker and Shuksan, especially if you extend to Huntoon Point (just over a mile each way). For a more adventurous route, add the Table Mountain loop(if you are not afraid of heights) (3 miles, +560 ft), with panoramas above treeline. In summer, the road is open July–October; snow lingers late, so check conditions . Pack sunscreen, water, layers, and a pass. We always pack layers because wind can change the feeling of the temperature dramatically. Attaching photos from different seasons- as a proof that it is always beautiful here- a true artist’s dream.
Gorgeous 360-degree views! We visited just a day or two after it opened for the season, and it was already quite packed with other visitors so plan accordingly. It was 70+ degree weather, clear blue skies, and while still tons of snow, it was perfect weather to have a snowball fight in shorts and t-shirt, just days before the 4th of July, no less! So much fun!! The drive both up and back is breathtakingly beautiful. Facilities are limited so plan accordingly taking plenty of water and food with you. Great day spent in the sun and enjoying the mountains! Highly recommended!
