We went for lunch on Saturday, didn’t book and had space for a group of 3. They have a great lunch menu that’s really affordable and loads of choice, hot meals, ciabatta’s etc. staff are all extremely friendly and we got a table overlooking the kitchen which I love! Food was delicious as well. Steak ciabatta cooked to perfection.
Stayed here for my friend's wedding. This is an absolutely lovely little hotel, fabulous snug areas between the rooms - has that high quality finish to it. The room itself was incredibly comfortable and really well kitted out. Very impressed.
We had our wedding reception in the hotel, Phil and Neil were so helpful and from start to finish with making sure we had everything ready for our special day . Sophie, Bella, and Tyler were also fantastic !! . The wedding breakfast was amazing and the service. Everything was a dream,a day to remember. Thank you so much to all at the Peppermill 💖
Restaurant- evening dinner We dined at the Peppermill tonight - four ladies each choosing a different main course. All of them were exceptionally good. I believe they have a new French chef who's only been there a couple of months but is certainly making his mark. The two staff on Thursday night were lovely and nothing was too much trouble for them. We started with pre-dinner drinks in the pretty Courtyard of the hotel and found the decor inside the restaurant very favourable. A super meal in great surroundings and fully recommended.
A random jaunt into Devizes to walk down the world famous locks saw us stumbling into the town centre to find food before we embarked. The staff here are great, very polite and greeted with a smile. We had not booked but they accommodated our request regardless. The speed of service was good with only a small delay to my Lamb, not an issue. The food was brilliant, the plated veg was more than enough for two so large eaters or small eaters you'll be fine. So would we come again, yes. No problem, so we'll be in there soon.
Peppermill - Devizes Got to stay here for a wedding last month and had the amazing pleasure of spending two nights in this quaint yet stylish hotel. It’s located right at the heart of the Wiltshire market town of Devizes, right on top of the market square and boasts to be one of the oldest extant buildings in the town dating back to the 15th century. It’s a Grade II listed building reflecting its architectural and historical significance, the hotel retains much of its original features like the low oak beams and uneven floors that’s contribute to charming, characterful atmosphere today. I stayed in room number ten which was stunning, stylish and very comfortable. Hosting all what you would expect to find in a decent hotel, like your usual teas and coffees, TV, local information, an iron and board, it was actually nice to see a Bible in the drawer as per old tradition. Power points were well situated for charging your gadgets and the best bit was the A/C. Coming here in the mid of July was hot so a decent A/C unit was very welcome. The hotel offers 16 boutique rooms, including a Bridal Suite with a four-poster bed and a two‑bedroom Family Suite. All the rooms are individually styled and I’m told all but the single room has A/C but all have en‑suite bathrooms. The bathroom was a highlight. Very chic yet retaining its grandiose style blending vintage elegance with modern luxury. There’s a large walk-in shower, a lengthy bathroom sink, but it’s the claw-footed bathtub that’s forms the centrepiece of the bathroom - the kind that demands a long, revitalising soak. There’s staff there were very welcoming and helpful, and they will tell you that access to the hotel at night is restricted, and you’ll have to gain entry via a coded door at the rear of the hotel found off of Castle Lane. I did a little pub crawl as you do so got back after hours. Finding the door wasn’t a problem but it’s advisable to have a look first if you’re planning on staying out late. It’s then navigating yourself through the hotel to find your room that can be a little disorientating. It was actually a nice surprise because you find these cosy snugs for socialising, relaxing and playing classic games like chess. I honestly thought I walked into someone’s lounge initially before realising it was safe to venture through. The entire hotel has this classic yet comfortable ambience, even the bar and restaurant, and cocktail lounge has a certain ambience that’s both trendy and vintage. The 2AA Rosette award-winning restaurant is quite large and was busy during my stay, serving a British menu with fresh seasonal ingredients sourced locally. Being the venue for the wedding reception, we were upstairs in a private, moderate banquet room which had its own bar and toilet. There’s A/C in the room but I did feel for the bar staff who were sweltering, but they never complained. The buffet food that was served was of high quality and a decent range to suit everyone’s tastes. The honey mustard sausages and Mini Yorkshire Puds with roast beef and horseradish were amazing! This also included a range of sandwiches and quiches, salads and range of small dessert plates. If the buffet was anything to go by, I can only imagine the main menu downstairs being excellent. They have very limited parking isn’t but there’s plenty of very local options. Just be mindful if staying mid week as parking in the market square is prohibited on Wednesday evenings due to the market on the Thursday. Just expect a short walk of you can’t get in behind the hotel. The local car parks are payable via MIPERMIT app and quite cheap at that. You get a scene of pride here, from the team, the service and the food, this pairing with the overall ambiance of the venue sets a perfect luxurious place to stay should you ever come to Devizes. It’s a great location if exploring the little town of Devizes or neighbouring attractions like Stonehenge, Avebury, the Kennet Canals and the town itself. I would certainly stay here again.
Had a great dinner out with my partner this Saturday evening. The waitresses were lovely, really friendly and efficient and the food was really good. We had crispy duck and goats cheese starters and then the Atlantic cod to follow. All the dishes were really well presented and very tasty. I haven't been here for a while but it was a lovely night out and we will be back
I often travel on business, and Peppermil is such a lovely place to stay!I truly adore it! Some special cosiness is felt inside, staff so friendly, so one can almost feel as a family member. One just wants to come back. It is nice and quiet, and I really enjoy slowing down the rhythm of life when I am here.I always wish it could have been one more day🙂.Rooms are spacious and so beautifully decorated. The restaurant is great, and food really delicious. This is by far my favourite place to stay in the UK 🙂
Had a wonderful time for Valentine’s Day! The food was fantastic and the service was really attentive, professional but friendly. We had the Chateaubriand, and it was cooked to perfection. The Panna Cotta dessert was the perfect finish to the meal. The service was excellent, and everything was so well organised, making for a really enjoyable evening. I’ll definitely be coming back! Highly recommend
I was booked to Dj Grace & Dan’s wedding disco. All the team were so helpful & made things flow smoothly for the disco access’s & setting up etc. The venue did everything they could so everyone could celebrate with Grace & Dan. Well done!
We enjoyed an evening meal and cocktails which were beautifully prepared and food which tasted as good as it looked. There is a warm and inviting atmosphere and we were served by a very professional young lady called Libby who knew the menu and was able to talk to us During our dining experience. We certainly would recommend the venue. Delighted to have had such an enjoyable evening. Also a superb selection of wine, a personal preference would be to see slightly more English varieties available. With that said, we had an excellent English sparkling. Thank you for an excellent evening.
This is the best restaurant I have ever eaten in in England. Anything you order is amazing. This is our special place for a special treat. It is not cheap but we'll worth every penny. Tasty and fresh food, lovely stuff. We love it!!!
Was there for one night for a wedding and we struck gold! Extremely comfortable, convenient, user-friendly and the BEST Full English Sunday Breakfast Ive had in ages.. I used to run a boutique B&B and I am very picky about Full English... This was sublime. Generous, tasty, perfectly cooked and prompt (and no sign of unwanted American Hash Browns TG). Top Marks given to the team here.
Came for dinner, left very happy. Food was absolutely stunning, everyone's was cooked to perfection, well presented and the quality of the meat & sauces was just next level. Especially the Guinea Fowl, which I had. I can't wait to come back to try some of the other dishes. Service on the other hand was slow and inconsistent - the staff were absolutely lovely but potentially there were not enough front of house to service all of the customers as plate collection was fairly slow and we did have to wait on drinks. Really think this is a numbers issue though as your staff seemed very busy all night and I could see other tables getting frustrated too. Although we didn't ask for it, there was no water for the table either, which I think would be a nice touch. All round fantastic though and would definitely come back.
We had my grandpa's 80th birthday party here and it was very enjoyable. The service was top notch and all the staff were very helpful. The rooms were excellent and well looked after giving a good sense of quality throughout the building. The food was awesome, had the roast chicken and loved it, very tasty! Overall I'd give this place a 9/10 from the experience I had.
Beautiful rooms and great food! We had an unavoidable problem with other accommodations and the manager came in after hours to save the day and let us book a room. Excellent location near the bus stop to get to Avebury! Would definitely book again if in the area!
We visited for an event. Manager and staff were outstanding. Looking forward to returning! Have since dined here three times. Though there is some strange confusion with the wine list... changing supply? ...the food is very good and the "skinny fries" may have been the best french fry I have ever had. Perfect!
We were 10 - all family who don't see each other very often. We could not have chosen a friendlier place. The service was very good indeed. We enjoyed her company! The food was very tasty and fitted everybody's needs.
The best venue in Devizes for drinks with friends or lunch or dinner. We had an impromptu Sunday lunch today which was superb. The service was efficient and friendly. If you haven’t tried the Peppermill yet you are missing a treat. Definitely recommended. The owners Phil and Amanda are often on hand with a friendly welcome. Best to book as always very popular. There is also an attractive patio garden for alfresco eating or drinks on a sunny day.
Stumbled across the restaurant on a Sunday drive out to Devizes, and so happy we did! The service was superb, the lovely lady that greeted us was super helpful and found us a table when they were fully booked. All the serving staff were well trained and the restaurant is clearly well run. Food - outstanding. Highly recommend xx
Away for a couple of days exploring Wiltshire, so Devizes is a great base for doing just that. Firstly the room. Spacious, clean and modern decor. Excellent bed. Great shower with lots of hot water. All the things I look for in a hotel room, amazing how down the years so many have failed on these basics. Secondly food. We ate in the restaurant for breakfast and dinner. Excellent breakfast, recommend the Eggs Royale. Dinner was quality. Ate the Ox Cheek, big thumbs up from me. For two of us having three courses with a good bottle of wine bill without tip was 130 pounds. I have no hesitation in recommending the Peppermill to you.
Afternoon tea was lovely. Brilliant waitress was asked if we could change one to vegan (didn't realise we had yo prebook it) & spoke to chef, they made up extra for us! Mocktail Bora Bora was refreshing.
Went for a Sunday lunch. Great friendly service. The roasted beef and lamb was really good. Big congrats to the chef. Well priced . Very well presented. Will come back
Wow, what a gorgeous hotel and at a very reasonable price. Spotlessly clean, fantastic attention to detail in the rooms, attentive service, beautifully modern yet inkeeping decor through out and a very tasty breakfast. Pictures on Booking.com didn't do it justice. Huge room (10) with luxurious super king bed, roll top bath, double sink and rain head shower.
A quick decision to stay over night in Devices this hotel was recommended to me. Well worth it's five star status dinner was one of the best meals I have had out and about. The staff exceptionally friendly and helpful the room was lovely and spacious, if an opportunity comes again to stay in Devices then this hotel will always be my first choice.
Had my wedding there at the weekend, owners were really great and ensured everything was going well and went out of their way to help. Rooms was lovely and food was great. Couldn't have asked for a better place to get married or to stay.
We had our wedding reception in the function room at The Peppermill yesterday. It is a lovely setting, the food was exceptional and it was absolutely perfect! You provide a personal service and the customer interaction is second to none, the friendliness, the kindness and the above and beyond attitude is truly unique. Thank you for the bottom of our hearts.
Second time eating here, both great experiences. Good service, warm welcome. Both times eating in a group over 5 and all food came out hot and together, no mistakes and great food. Would definitely eat here again. Chose this restaurant the second time for my birthday meal.
I stayed only one night in this centrally located hotel as I was just traveling through, looking at narrowboats. The host kindly upgraded me to a better room and I had a very restful sleep. The busy restaurant has a varied menu and I would recommend this lovely old English style hotel for a short break! Excellent breakfast too.
After a fantastic two night stay at the Peppermill including an evening meal I wanted to write a review (and I hardly ever write reviews). Every aspect of our stay was fantastic. From the friendly greeting from both owners to the friendly and professional wait staff, we felt utterly cared for and very welcome. The rooms are finished to high detail and the aesethic is modern but sensitive to the character of the charming original building. The bed was comfy and the room had everything we needed. The food was hearty and the menu and dishes had some novel items (my favourite was a potato and thyme terrine) as well as firm favourites. After a stressful week this was the perfect place to stay for a comfortable, romantic and cosy, relaxing weekend in Wiltshire. I wouldn't hesitate to return or recommend to anyone looking for the same. If you want to stay at a place where it is clear that both the owners and staff care about every little detail of your experience, this is worth every penny.
What can I say, from start to finish my visit here was exceptional. I arrived mid-week, my 2nd out of 3 stops for the week, and already feeling tired. The owner welcomed me, checking me into a room far surpassing my expectations, a truly inviting space that made it hard to come away for dinner. I am so glad I did though, Wow, my mouth exploded in joy at the Handmade parmesan and rocket gnocchi, I could easily have eaten it twice over, it was THAT good! I slept like a baby and had the most indulgent rainmaker shower to wake up the weary bones. Breakfast was the perfect start to another day, before work and the next leg of travels. A firm Devizes favourite now! Thank you, everyone, for making life on the road so enjoyable.
Had a gorgeous Saturday lunch here: lovely, friendly service; peaceful, relaxed vibe; delicious food (especially some great fish dishes) and wine. Really felt that this was a team in the kitchen and front of house working together beautifully. I'll gladly return.
Fabulous stay at The Peppermill. So accommodating. Good room with aircon and lovely hot shower. The evening meal and breakfast were both delicious. All the staff were so friendly and helpful. Thanks so much we had a great evening!
We use the Peppermill on a regular basis for meeting rooms, lunches and overnight stays for our work. I cannot express how amazing the team are here, they are so helpful and will do anything for you. I'm incredibly grateful that I get to deal with these on a regular basis - they don't get enough credit :-) Food is always amazing and the accommodation is perfect!
Visited for the first time yesterday with friends, every aspect of our lunch and drinks at this location was perfect. From the service, to the drinks, to the attention to detail - bathroom clearly recently cleaned and spotless. Cocktails well presented and a decent selection. Staff noticing when we needed shade and offering a parasol. Service charge not assumed but very much deserved. First time have been to Devizes for a while but would be worth returning for this place. Well done to all staff and management for the excellent work, keep it up. We will be back.
Food was good but small portions. I think the head chef was having a night off as the food had a prepared well in advance feel to it. Interesting wine list. Service was ok. Room was good
Really lovely design inside, with the bar, restaurant and hotel. The food was really good, a bit too heavy on the seafood for me. I had the duck, it was beautiful! Potato dauphinois was outstanding as well! Female staff were lovely and friendly, a bit slow with service, but it was busy. Male staff looked like he was annoyed when we asked to order more drinks. All in all a lovely place for a meal with friends and a good drinks and cocktails menu.
Amazing quality food, could not fault! I tip my hat to the amazing chef's here! Service was very slow! Wasn't even busy at the time and we did have to ask a few times for our drinks after a 20 minute wait. Other than that, a lovely clean restaurant that I would recommend.
The staff are super friendly at this hotel. The room was beautiful and clean. The breakfast was amazing too. We really enjoyed it here. We did find it a bit odd we had to go in the back door and travel through the hotel up and down stairs when we went back in though.
Dined here with a party of 15 or so. Menu was expensive but worth the extra. My flatiron steak was ordered rare and was served beautifully so. It was accompanied by very good chips, some mushrooms and salad garnish. Dessert was the apple pie and ice cream which was equally delicious and this was washed down with a cappucino. The red wine served was ok, nothing special, not sure whether it was the house stuff or not but it was passable. A really good meal, just glad I wasn't paying 🙂
AFTERNOON TEA Despite advising when booking my friend was vegetarian some sandwiches contained meat. Staff did not tell us what cakes and sandwiches were. No serviettes and the scones were dry and burnt. Won’t be going back again for this experience.
Unfortunately a below average experience for an overpriced menu. The food itself was nice but for the price you expect a little bit more quality that simply wasn't delivered. The service really let the experience down. The two waitresses were incredibly grumpy and made the dining experience a tad awkward. They walked past the table with their heads down to avoid having to make eye contact with us. If you fancy a nice cocktail then this is the place to go but unless you want to feel like an inconvenience this is not the place for dinner.
Met a friend for dinner. I ordered the only vegan option on the menu, a Korean BBQ broccoli dish. It was £19 and was essentially four pieces of tenderstem broccoli, four bits of tempura batter and some peanut butter. The staff had to be asked to come over to our table, and we had things added to our bill that we didn’t have. I asked if the chips were vegan and I would have them if they were, they said they weren’t and meat or fish was cooked in both fryers. I politely declined them, but chips were still on our bill. It’s a lovely atmosphere and the drinks are good, but our bill for two substandard meals and 4 glasses of wine was £100 and we left hungry. We went to another restaurant afterward for another dinner.
My daughters treated me to an afternoon tea at the Peppermill. After emailing with them booking 3 weeks in advance got there to find no booking. The staff did everything they could to sort it out. The afternoon tea was mediocre at best for the cost, really quite poor. I wrote to the manager rather than putting anything on social media but no response, disappointing to say the least, just like the food. So many other great afternoon teas in the locality which are nicer and better value.
My husband and I dined at the Peppermill restaurant end of October on the last day of 3 weeks in England. The food was above average, not extraordinary, the atmosphere was beautiful. But the staff ignored us for most of the meal. We had to finally go ask for our bill after trying to catch the attention of staff for more than 20 minutes while we sat almost in the middle of tables that were being served and attended to. Not sure how we offended them, but they weren't even willing to glance at us. Go elsewhere.
My Wife went there for a birthday dinner last Saturday and made them aware that she is allergic to alcohol even if its in food. Every time she ordered something she double checked that it had no alcohol. She ordered a mocktail, and again double checked that it was alcohol free, and the server said it was. When she got it she took a generous swig and she then tasted the alcohol in it. The server apologised. And said dont worry the alcohol is at the bottom. We spent the rest of the night and until the early hours of the morning in A&E in Salisbury. When you are allergic to alcohol it slowly effects your breathing and slows down your heart until it stops. Its not a joke or someone messing about, its really serious, and depending on the amount of alcohol thats drunk depends on how quick the reaction takes effect. I emailed the peppermill via their contact us page to let them know of our disappointment and to let them know what could have happened, and they couldn't even spend a couple of minutes to give us a reply. Just think how much worse this could have been if my wife hadn't of tasted the alcohol and we hadn't of got the treatment we needed as quick as we did. Shame on you Peppermill
A booking was made for 6 vegetarians & assured that they could accommodate this however this was not the case & choice of only vegetarian starter salad leaves beetroot with small mozzarella balls ( as a main & very small portion)couple people had to then order chips as a side.lady who booked questioned this as was assured the 'chef' would make us some fresh & different food after checking with them two days before the meal date VERY DISSAPOINTED & hefty price for what we actually got Over rated & won't book again such a shame
Edited - never had contact from them as mentioned in their reply and the menu still remains the same on their website. Shane’s as the place is lovely but myself and many others won’t be returning. Had an event here at the weekend with 16 guests. Some of which had afternoon tea, some had the lunch menu. All food was ordered and paid for two weeks prior to the date to ensure they had plenty of time to prepare for dietary changes that people would need, I.e no fish, gluten free, however on the day this seemed to go very wrong and cause so much of an issue that the food coming out took so long that some people had finished before others had started. The afternoon tea was not good value for money, £25 for three small fingers of sandwiches that wouldn’t even make a full sandwich, two scones and three very miniature cakes. It’s advertised that you will be able to choose from a variety of drinks from their menu, which we were never given or offered. Upon trying to speak to the manager regarding the issues with the food it was made out to be my fault and that I had told them we didn’t want certain things, which was not true, and quite frankly was met with attitude and arrogance and sense of good customer service. We were situated upstairs which was nice to be in a private room, I was offered to have the upstairs bar open for guests to which I said yes, however it was not staffed. It very much seemed that we were out of sight, out of mind and I wish I never pre paid for the food as myself and many of my guests wouldn’t have paid full price for what we were given. Overall - bad value for money, poor service and ultimately extremely disappointed.
Went here for steak night and was not told about the ribeye not being part of the deal which is not a problem however wasn’t made aware of it. Also all three of us asked for medium rare steaks and they all came out pretty much raw inside nearly blue., when mentioned they didn’t do anything about it and also charged a mandatory 10% commission so payed 37£ for a steak that wasn’t even cooked correctly won’t go again.
