We had a nice dinner in there. Service was great and atmosphere is calm and peaceful. Nice place to have a meal after day full of adventures in museum. They opened Sundays night so one more thing which nice about this place
Our waitress was amazing. Her name was Chloe. She truly made this a 5 star experience. Food was exceptional and the dining space was pleasant.
Don't know why it took us so long to come here! Would recommend a reservation. Our first visit was wonderful, absolutely loved the goat cheese appetizer. Staff was attentive and kind, clean restaurant, not too loud either. Will most definitely be back!
L.May Eatery excels with fantastic Midwest cuisine and a phenomenal staff. Each dish is a delightful blend of local flavors, perfectly prepared. The welcoming and attentive service makes every visit a memorable experience.
Absolutely excellent food. Our server Mary was also ABSOLUTELY excellent. I do not say that lightly. Everything from our seating time, to our playing time, right into meal recommendations were spot on. Do NOT Skip desert. Worth every penny. May want to take some for a later night snack afterwards.
Stopped by while traveling for business. The home comb with fig & whipped goat cheese appetizer was really light and tasty. The risotto was cooked just right with the caramelized onions flavor throughout the dish. And of course the fillet was amazing, cooked perfectly and buttery soft. Mary our server was great. Only knock is some of the pricing is a little high, but not outrageous. Overall experience was very good and I would come back if I’m back in town. P.S. The little boy in the bathroom in creepy as hell!! 😂
Enjoyed a light lunch here with a friend. The Panini was light but full of flavor and the "You're in Dubuque" Pizza was absolutely excellent. We ordered the hand-tossed crust which has a light, pastry-like crust. Highly recommend both!
We ate here for date night. I'm allergic to gluten, so I glanced at the menu beforehand and noticed they had a lot of options. We had the gf spinach & artichoke dip for an appetizer. It was amazing!! 10/10. Next up we got our house side salad. Again, amazing & 10/10. There was a ton of flavor and it was super fresh. I got the tri tip dinner and my husband (not gf) got the meatloaf. My tri tip was pretty good. The mashed potatoes had a little bit of a spiciness to them that I wasn't expecting. My husband said he wasn't super fond of the meatloaf. The sauce on top was way more ketchup based than we are use to. He the meatloaf itself could use more flavor. Our waitress was amazing and very knowledgeable about gluten free needs. Overall, we were pleased and will be back when visiting again! Definitely visit here if you are gluten free!
Excellent birthday date! Our server, Rachel, was wonderful, as was the filet mignon and osso buco! The bruscetta and ceasar salad were perfect starters and the reasonable prices for such great food made it a place we will come back to again and again.
We went here on a recommendation. It was outstanding. Our server Rachel was wonderful. The honeycomb appetizer is amazing. Everything we ate, we really enjoyed. I would highly recommend L.May.
Everything was delicious and they were super accommodating regarding the person in our party who was Gluten free. We enjoyed the chicken Parm, the chicken caprese panini, the figgy panini, and, let me tell you, the creme brulee was to. Die. For. 💀 So delicious. The staff were all very friendly.
We had a lovely meal here celebrating my moms retirement. Started with the bruschetta which was very tasty. I got a Cesar salad with salmon which was just the healthy, delicious option I needed. Best of all they had our favorite beer, Zombie dust, for only $5! We had… several.
Outside seating, inside seating, excellent food, excellent service... can't believe www waited till the last day of our stay to go to this gem!! #recommended
The best salads ever as a side or entree! Add their salmon for more satisfaction. Nice drink options, pasta and more. A little pricey but worth it for special occasions.
We really enjoyed our visit to L.May! The salmon was fantastic as were the hand-crafted cocktails. Definitely worth the trip.
L. May is D.Lightful! Following a tip from other reviews we made our reservation and were graciously welcomed at the door. Our server Kari was superb with a great command of the menu and bubbly cheerfulness in service. My pork shank was outstanding to the last bite. Orchard Pizza with apples!?!? Just eat it! You won't be sorry. Creamsicle Cheesecake was heavenly. Chocolate Mousse was dark, rich, and fudgy - not light - topped with Cinnamon ice cream and nuts. We did not mind the prices because L.May is X.Quisite!
I got the Apple Brie panini. Husband got Figgy Piggy panini and son got Philly Cheesesteak. All were very good. Panini were the right size for lunch. Mimosa was light on the OJ for sure. All in all, quite a few other menu items that looked interesting so worth another trip to Dubuque.
L May's was beyond excellent! The service was awesome, Maggie was great! Very kind, patient and informative, especially being that my husband and I were on vacation and had never been to Dubuque! She really mad our experience wonderful! And the food was amazing! From the appetizer to the salad and the main course, everything was on point and delicious!
Delicious food and friendly service. We ordered the spinach and artichoke dip for an appetizer. It was the most unique version of the dish I’ve tasted. I ordered the veggie pasta with chicken as an entree. The best pasta I’ve ever had. The homemade fettuccine noodles were delightful. If you’re going to order dessert, go for the creme brûlée. What a fantastic dining experience!
As an out of towner I was thrilled to find a place like this in Dubuque (especially open on Monday night which seems to be a bit rare here). The figgy piggy flatbread was very tasty and the two cocktails I tried were well executed.
L May is so cute and delicious. Came here on a weekend getaway and had the best time. Everything we ate was the best. Highly recommend!
The Filet here is to die for. My friends and I would hit the place up every week on Wednesdays for dinner and drinks. Also to kick back and enjoy a couple of the signature Old Fashions. Cheers!!
Highly recommend L May. Great meal, service and atmosphere as always. We had a small Caprese pizza for an appetizer. Wonderful!
My daughter and I stopped for pizza today for the first time. So glad we did. My daughter chose the Figgy Piggy pizza and I ordered the Hot honey Hawaiian. Both were excellent. I also had one of their l.may fashioned. Best one I’ve ever had. The Bartender/Owner, David, was very friendly and informative regarding the Old Fashioned and our server, Rachel, was great… friendly and just the right amount of attentive. I don’t know what tooo me so long to try them. We will be back. Oh, and the total bill was very reasonable. Thank you Rachel and David!
Was recommended this place by my son in law. WOW, the food did not disappoint. The thin crust pizza was amazing a very large (14 in), enough for 3 people for sure. Salads were great and the brownie for dessert was crazy good. Highly recommend this place of you are in Dubuque. It's a bit pricey but portions are big and you can share
Outstanding experience for us. We stopped on our “backway” motorcycle journey from Indiana ti Minnesota. HONEYCOMB appetizer was out of this world.
Anna was our server. She was fantastic! The food is outstanding. Absolutely the best cheddar mashed potatoes I've ever eaten. This has to be one of the top restaurants in Dubuque!
Go-to date night spot. Tons of gluten free options (even desserts??) and gluten free croutons on the standard salad, so there's no confusion. Their artichoke spinach dip with gluten free bread is so insanely good, I get it every time. Beautiful cocktails, wine, and beer selections. Homey atmosphere that isn't too fancy, but fancy enough to feel special. A discount if you pay cash! This has been one of my favorite dinner spots for over a decade.
FANTASTIC FOOD, SERVICE, & SMART! We reserved a table for 5 with 2 high chairs. We were greeted with a warm welcome and brought back to a semi-private room that was perfectly fit for our young family. The kids enjoyed the pizza, while the adults enjoyed the bruschetta, Caesar salad, Cajun pasta & pork. So delicious our 9-month old baby savored every bite! Thank you for making a meal with a 5, 2, and 9 month old so enjoyable! ⭐️
Real gem place, crust of hand tossed pizza is brick oven perfection. Focaccia appetizer was home made w/ butter and was also exceptional, side salads were very generous portions. Low key cozy atmosphere and superb service for reasonable price, a rare perfect triangle on speed quality and price.
Very nice atmosphere. A very nice night to sit in the outdoor area. We had the vegan stuffed peppers in a coconut curry sauce. It was delicious and it was worth a try.
I made a reservation for a date night. Asked to be tucked away is a little spot. They did just that. Food was recommended and it was to die for! We split a piece of cheesecake. We didn't even finish it together. 130 for 2 people, no adult drinks. But it was an amazing time. Never given a perfect score in dubuque, except this time!
We had a great experience. Food was amazing and atmosphere was refreshing. There was a brief wait so we had a couple drinks at the bar. We experienced the genuine support the waitstaff had for one another, asking if they’re ok, what the need, encouraging each other they’re doing great, they’re needed on the team. It was heart filled to watch! Ivy was our waitress and not only was she beautiful, her beauty came from the inside. She was genuine, comical and didn’t skip a beat joking with us.
Good food, great service. Reasonable prices for the experience delivered. Large portions. Some gluten-free options including pizza and spinach artichoke dip. Would like to see more gluten-free options, as there are not a lot in Dubuque.
This local restaurant is a treasure in Dubuque! A favorite amongst locals and a wonderful find for those visiting from out of town. The staff will treat you like family with such kindness and attention to detail that is rarely found. You cannot make a bad choice on the menu as everything is delicious and the ambience makes you feel like family. As a small business owner myself, I can appreciate all the effort put forth that you may not notice during your visit, but let me tell you that effort is there and I notice thank you so much For tonight‘s amazing dinner and for your graciousness. I wish you many years of success.
We came in a group of 4, sat within a few minutes. Our server was very sweet attentive and paid close attention to detail. I didn't order any soup or salad so she took it upon herself to offer me some rosemary focaccia bread to enjoy, delicious! Everyone enjoyed what they ordered the food was great and well worth the price. Lovely quiet calm atmosphere. We all really enjoyed the meal and service. Keep up the good work!
A chic and warm bistro serving gourmet comfort food downtown. I tried the meatloaf and crab cakes — both were bursting with flavor and freshness. The house salad and focaccia were excellent too. Service was attentive and knowledgeable. The atmosphere is cozy yet refined. Definitely a spot I’ll return to.
Very nice restaurant in downtown Dubuque, Iowa. Good food, nice wine, beer, and cocktail selections. Pleasant atmosphere and excellent service. Overall, we had a very good experience and will come again next time we are in Dubuque.
One of the best places to dine in the tri states! Excellent food, classic and original cocktails, and exceptional service. Even at its busiest, the dining room is cozy and welcoming. A gem of a place in downtown Dubuque, family owned and operated. Bring your appetite, desserts and appetizers are a must. Seasonal cocktails and entrees are well chosen.
We walked in here on Saturday evening without having a reservation. We were seated immediately, in the downstairs dining room. The service was great, and we all enjoyed our meals. My filet was cooked perfectly.
Food was good and lots of it. They don't have anything vegan per se but was able to order the stir fry without eggs and it wasn't bad.
Our experience at L.May Eatery was a solid four stars. The culinary team's focus on a limited, curated menu is a testament to their commitment to quality over quantity. Every dish we ordered was exceptional, showcasing a clear dedication to fresh, local ingredients. The service was equally impressive, with a genuinely friendly and knowledgeable staff who made us feel both welcomed and well-cared for. Our meal felt thoughtfully prepared, and the personal touches from the servers elevated the entire evening.
I have eaten at L. May's several times with my husband and had wonderful experiences. Tonight I brought my 34 year old daughter for her birthday and it was a severe let down. We got dumped into a corner table that was freezing cold. Our waitress was pleasant as can be. We ordered the brussel sprouts and some kind of a steak appetizer. Both were very disappointing. The steak was barely chewable. It was served with toast and a tomato slice. Not sure if they were meant to be eaten on the toast or what. The meat was just too hard to chew even by itself. Nevermind on a piece of toast. It was awful. The brussel sprouts were different, but similarly disappointing. No flavor what so ever and the texture of raw zucchini with the skin on chopped up. Not sure what it all was chopped up in a bowl. We both ordered the 10" pizzas. I ordered the figgy piggy which sounded good on paper, but didn't have much flavor at all. My daughter had a pizza with apple and I don't know what else and only ate one piece. I am not sure why. She just wasn't crazy about it. The heat came on as we were about 80% done. I don't enjoy wearing a winter coat to eat dinner. The ambiance at our particular table was 0. The food was less than mediocre. The waitress was pleasant, professional, and very pretty. Left a 20% tip as she did her job. The rest was a bust. We came up from Cedar Rapids to dine. Probably won't do that again. Our loss. Pictured are the brussel sprouts.
My first visit here in 2016 I had such a taste for meatloaf that wasn't on the menu so I consoled myself with salmon entree at the time and it was fine. Finally have the opportunity to visit almost six years later! They finally have meatloaf on the menu!! YAY LMAY!!! I order and, to my surprise, it was just OK. Kind of dry and falling apart with this weird siered crust on the outside. Even the mashed potatoes were dry. The only thing that wasn't dry was the accompanying vegetables. Otherwise, the lavender martini was delicious as well as the fresh baked bread.
We stopped in for lunch after my son went to Dubuque to take his SATs. We arrived at 1200 on a Saturday to an empty restaurant. Everyone was very pleasant and our waitress was personable and helpful. Their lunch menu is quite limited and somewhat bland. I looked it over 3 times trying to figure out what I might want before settling on a half soup and panini. The soup, a tomato lentil, was warm salsa that had more chunks than liquid with the lentils adding a gritty feel and the panini was maybe a quarter of the normal dish (which my niece got) but was at least tasty. The waitress did try to warn me about the soup though so thats my fault for trying it. My son's chicken parmesan was overcooked - chewy and dry, I was told. I didn't ask but my niece's chicken panini looked good. $70 for lunch for 3 people with no drinks including tip...and a stop at McDs on the way home.
I have eaten here before and had good experiences however, my most recent to celebrate an anniversary has changed my outlook. We started with the steak bite appetizer which was essentially inedible pieces of gristle that we had to spit out. For our entrees, the salmon was dry and the risotto was like mush. My husbands filet mignon was tender but under seasoned. The focaccia was dry. The house salad was probably the best part as well as the drinks which were delicious. We tipped our waiter generously as she was friendly and attentive, however for the price of the food and lack of quality I doubt we will return.
Had high hopes. Bruschetta appetizer was good and what I expected… soup was amazing and both tasted fresh. However, the main course ended up feeling like 4 day old rice: dry and lack of seasoning :( we mentioned it to our server but we got) “Yeah it’s a cake so I suppose it’s a more dry texture”. It was the vegetarian option and we added the shrimp, wishing we had just gone for the filet like everyone raves about. It did look great from what we could see coming out of the kitchen. Not sure if we would come back or not so I’d give it 2.5 stars with a 50/50% of coming back.
Sat us, then moved us after 5 minutes. Lack of sufficient A/C was uncomfortable. Ordered the special. Salmon was overcooked and dry, asparagus wasn't cooked enough, and rice was way overcooked (mush). Had 4 bites, sent back, and no discount offered. $34.00 for trash. Now I'm off to a show with no dinner. To be fair server was kind and attentive (although failed to offer discount on failed special). Kids liked pasta and soup was good. I didn't eat pizza but was told the crust was chewie. Last complaint, $5 credit card fee I'm so tired of credit card fees in this area. Hard to to well we'll charged for using a card and wasting $34 on food I could eat. Sorry server, but your team and CC fees failed you.
Ordered the meatloaf dinner. Unfortunately, that was a bad choice. The meatloaf was burnt to a crisp on the top. With the red sauce on top, this entree reminded me of a smashed meatball. The dinner was priced way too high for the value. First time at this restaurant, so maybe the other dinners are better. They may want to replace this entree with something different.
My girlfriend and I were greeted kindly, shown to our table. The table was sticky No server ever came to take our order or bring us drinks We stayed for over 20 minutes before just walking out. Worst service I’ve ever experienced in my life. The staff was happily engaged with themselves at the front bar area while we sat unattended - there were only four total tables of other customers ( max group size four ) so it was not busy at all the staff was just not being well managed / kept in check.
