Staying nearby so popped in for my evening meal... Fraya and Ashley were really welcoming and the food was lovely... Pie and mash Friendly staff and home comforts when working away from home... Just the ticket This place is spotlessly clean and very comfortable Darts, Pool and live sports a great little place to spend the evening Thank you ladies for looking after me (D) 🙂😋
Called ahead to find out about gluten free options and although there wasn't a great selection, we were reassured when told that all food is cooked separately. When we arrived, the GF food was brought out before everyone else's, and my son said it was yummy, he had the chicken wings, chips and corn ribs. Highly recommend for peace of mind when dining out with a coeliac
New to the area, usual eating place closed Mon-Tue. Spent a bit of time looking for a suitable alternative. My requirements are: dog friendly, table seat near a plug socket, decent WiFi, and serves reasonably priced food. This place checked every box. Really good atmosphere, and in addition to fulfilling all my requirements it also had a great darts board and pool table. A real community pub. Beautiful pint of Cruzcamp served by Marisa who was warm and friendly with an infectious smile. I had a burger meal, which came with any drink for £2 (including the lovely pint). Very happy, though if you have a large appetite I'd recommend instead ordering the "two mains for £13.50" weekday meal. The flapjack apple and raspberry crumble was a let down, but was only a small blip in an otherwise perfect evening. 9.5/10 I will absolutely come here again, the landlady Freya really knows how to run a pub.
Popped into the Royal Oak for a meal. The food was good. Portion sizes were also very good and priced about right. The menu has some good offer but unfortunately not on Saturdays. Very friendly staff and customers were also nice and chatty.
We love popping to the Royal Oak, the staff are helpful and friendly whether you are with your children or having a nice meal with your partner or friends. There is a dart board, pool table (free on a Tuesday) and a good pub menu with great deals throughout the week and clean facilities.
The Royal is a fantastic local pub with a warm, welcoming atmosphere and great service every time. The food and drinks are always spot on, and the place has a genuine community feel that’s hard to find these days. I’ve seen a few negative comments online about the landlady, and I want to say clearly — they are completely false and made up. It’s sad that anyone would try to slander such a kind, hardworking person who puts her heart into making everyone feel at home. If you want good company, great food, and a proper pub experience, The Royal is the place to be!
Great atmosphere, really nice and friendly staff. Lots of seating indoors and outside. Great play area for kids and nice and secure fencing. Great for being in the sunshine. Sits on a quiet road just outside Exeter centre on route to dawlish. I’ll be coming back here with my son for sure. The locals mention that the food is really good too. Good for watching sport. Defibrillator attached to wall outside front.
Been here several times and have always had a great time. The food is always good and well priced and the service and welcome from all the staff is second to none. Added bonus is the play area for the kids!
Visited in June 2021 for a couple of drinks and some food. The owner was welcoming and talkative and led us to a table straight away. We were seated in the beer garden which had plenty of sun. The waiting staff were very friendly and brought water and dog treats for our Springer. The food was hot and delicious and we will definitely be visiting again soon. Many thanks.
Had a great Easter Sunday pub was packed kids really enjoyed the disco and Easter hunt. We were a table of 8 all the food was bang on and staff very friendly went out their way to make us feel welcome and were great with the kids could tell there was a lot of effort put in. 100% recommend definitely a new favourite place will be back!! ❤️
Popped in few weeks back on our bike ride, had a pint and the cheese and bacon burger 😋 so had to come back again, great local pub super friendly good selection of lager cider and ale very friendly service from Tina. Get ya cash out Freya 😋
We came in to the Royal Oak on Thursday for Quiz night our 1st one and it was lovely! We had such a nice evening and the lady Tina behind the bar was amazing such a lovely lady and nice to chat to :) Definitely recommend!
Great pub, great landlady and staff, always a friendly and welcoming atmosphere
Lovely pub, very welcoming with friendly service
Excellent pub, really warm and cosy lovely staff
Thank you to Freya , Marissa and all the staff who made a difficult day better[ mum's funeral].You were so welcoming to everyone and it was all so well organised. The pub was warm and cosy and the buffet was delicious.
Great local pub, friendly atmosphere, always loads going on each week. Friendly staff, good drinks selection, food is great. Can’t knock it. By far the best pub in Exminster.
Went for Father’s Day today as a party of 8. Nice venue, greeted by friendly staff. All ordered and done in a timely manner. The food was fantastic, plated roast dinner was excellent and kids portions where decent too. Deserts where brilliant and all reasonably priced. We will 100% be returning.
Stayed nearby and popped in for a pint in the lovely beer garden one day and came back for Sunday lunch the next. The British F1 race was on and they were very accommodating, finding us a space to watch it even though they had a singer on in another room. Great food and service.
Mel, Scott and the team have created a super friendly and social local pub. There are regular events and bands to cater for all. It’s also a family friendly pub and they go above and beyond to consider families in their events too. Fabulous customer service and atmosphere - you won’t be disappointed
The Royal Oak is a lovely place to eat, drink and socialise. The food is cooked to a lovely standard (I've tried a few different items and I have a very fussy child). The staff are lovely and the atmosphere is great, child friendly with a play area and dog friendly.
Stopped off for lunch on the way back from Exeter. Really friendly welcome by lovely staff, owner and local regulars. Food was top notch and great value. Got introduced to Inch’s cider which was really nice 😉. Dog friendly - owner has shih tzu’s. Highly recommended for food and drinking.
Good friendly pub we definitely be going back there.
Popped in with wife and child while it was snowing yesterday and had a lovely pizza. Place was warm and staff were welcoming and helpful. Recommended if you like a quiet village pub 👍👍👍👍👍
Lovely friendly, safe atmosphere. Visited here for lunch after Powderham Castle. About 5 minutes drive. Good food & reasonably priced. Hand sanitiser on arrival. Table service. Very attentive. Child friendly
Attended a community event. The atmosphere was great as always. No food from the kitchen today. BBQ in the garden but I didn't have any so can't comment.
I can only think that ‘ Maddius “The G.O.A.T” Mahdi‘ was in a different Royal Oak, if he wasn’t, his review is a pack of lies!! The staff at the Royal Oak in Exminster are, without exception, the happiest, kindest and friendliest band of super people I’ve ever met. They all go out of their way to ensure people of all ages are included, assisted and welcomed. Mel and Scott ensure that the pub is run as an asset to the village.
Lovely pub under new management. Fantastic Sunday Roast - well worth trying, good sized beer garden with children's play area and a skittle alley. Dog friendly. Highly recommended.
Food is amazing had one of the best roasts I’ve ever had and the staff are amazing too. The pub itself is beautiful and very clean. Thank you for making feeling so welcome
Lovely looking pub, just a shame they won't accommodate clients wishes I guess it's down to management or brewery who owns them 😕 Explanation- tried to get a small drop of Guinness to make my cocktail perfect. They refused because everything is measured....
Good food and atmosphere on Christmas Eve. Slight issue with two of our mains being delivered to another table, but Claire looked after us and resolved the issue quickly. Seems like the new owners are "on it".
Ordered a take away roast from here during Covid-19. Food was fantastic and huge portions. So much so that had to put pudding in fridge for later. Very reasonable price and was bang on time agreed. Excellent food and service.
Visited on a weekend for lunch. We all had a very nice burger & chips, as this was the only option available on the menu. The pub itself was tastefully decorated & friendly. Hopefully next time we visit there will be more menu options available.
It's a great local, we had a couple of drinks, played Pool and had a game of darts. Landlord was polite and welcoming. We had a great time.
Good quality typical pub food classics. Nice to have a pub in Exminster worthy of dining at. Good job handling a party of 10 of us too.
Quite enjoyed the fish and chips. Really quite cheap(£11.50) and cooked well. Selection of beers on tap and in fridge was lacking. Nice friendly staff.
Catered for allergies. Fish was fresh tasting (scampi) but on the second visit (cod) the food in general was overcooked and not so good. Pool table (average condition). No pub internet, just the cloud. Fine for kids as large and a garden. Pleasant staff. Beer good and had deals on. A nice place but hopefully the first experience on food we more accurate.
Really lovely atmosphere, kareoke and darts are just a couple of things on offer! The owners are really friendly, we really enjoy coming here. After writing the above review a couple months ago, I had to come back to leave a rather different one. Whilst the above is still very true, myself and my friends were charged an extra £1 for NOT having ice today! Making a pint of Pepsi Max £3.80... Not impressed.
***Original post was made over 3 years ago, when previous management was in place. The new owners have just (after 3 years) responded. Please note this review was made under previous management. *** Called in for some lunch, really lovely, warm welcoming place, proper family feel! Service was brilliant, nice friendly hello and smile when we walked in. The food was amazing! Fish finger sandwich and pulled bbq pork loaded fries! 😍🐷 We got chatting with the owner, who took over the pub during lockdown, well worth the visit!
The pub itself was fine , but not being a local and going there for the first time I checked it out , i found locals looking at me ! There was a man by the bar that made me feel unwanted there . I will never visit the pub again !!
Sunday lunch-Decided to visit the Royal Oak today after reading some great reviews about the Sunday lunch. Service was friendly, warm and attentive. The roast lamb was delicious, plenty of crispy roast potatoes with a great selection of vegetables. Without doubt one of the nicest Sunday roasts in the area. Unfortunately the dessert was extremely disappointing, described as a Cherry Crumble, sadly not one cherry just a cherry sauce with a granola crumbled over the top. When I complained this fell on deaf ears. We wouldn't hesitate to return or recommend the Royal Oak albeit we wont be purchasing a below par pudding.
Went there for a quiet pint and food to meet some friends. Unfortunately there was full blown kareoke on with some of the worst singers I have ever heard. Absolute torture, couldn't hear a thing. The food was ok but warm. Used to love this place, tonight put me off.
It's ok, budget food menu, very cheap, service is slow and somewhat lacking. Nice clean and tidy pub, quite cosy. Don't go here for qualify food, but ok for cheap bar snacks.
Arrived for a booked table for at 19:00, ordered at 19:12… food arrived at 20:45. Almost a 2hr wait for food and saw people that had arrived afterwards eating before us. Once the food did arrive it was nice but service was poor, felt as if we had been forgotten which was a deep shame as felt like it was a nice pub, and wasn’t exactly packed that evening.
Visited over Christmas time (16th Dec) service was slow, we had a table booked for 18 adults and 2 children and there was only one server working. Food was well cooked (potatoes and parsnips overcooked), could have eaten more but enjoyed what we did get. Will visit again out season to see what they are like then and will reveiw them again but on this visit not over impressed.
Terrible attitude of staff and management. They were being abusive to someone else, when I intervened they became very hostile and threatening to me. Very unprofessional indeed. With the pub trade in the state it is in, aggressive and arrogant behaviour such as what I have experienced will probably result in another closure, to which on this occasion I shall say 'good riddance'! Avoid at all costs.
I ordered the Cambodian Street Food Curry, as this is one of very few vegetarian dishes on the menu. I was expecting lots of flavour, however, I have never had a curry so bland in my life. Even after attempts to spice it up with condiments, mustard and pepper, it still tasted of nothing. I had 6 mouthfuls in an attempt to not feel like I was wasting my money, no luck. My partner had a steak, it was at least 35% fat. All 3 portions of chips we had were rock hard so my children ended up having a few nuggets for their lunch. We attempted to get our meals rectified, however, the bar staff was not seen for quite a while at some points. We gave up trying eat, and when the staff emerged we said about the meals, in an attempted to either get our money back or at least some cooked chips but no. We got an 'oh, sorry' and their walked off. £50 plus lighter and still hungry. Such a shame.
Food was very mid. Bingo on a Sunday afternoon??? Roasties weren’t crispy. No pease, only served kale as the greens. Cold. And no sauce or deserts. Understaffed Served me a 0% drink when I asked a Heineken
Went here for Mothers Day today. Total disaster. Very disorganised with staff standing around doing nothing. Table wasn't cleared before desert arrived which we had to ask for. We had to wait over an hour for food which had been pre-ordered. When I said I was diabetic I was offered a slice of bread and told there was another 30 minute wait for food. I wouldn't go back. Staff didn't seem bothered when we complained and they didn't try to pacify us or rectify our situation. Others in my party had cold meals. We were told sorry but nothing could be done. Whatever happened to good customer service?
