Hands down one of my favorite places to eat when I am in town! Great food selection, great drink selection, and the staff are always nice and helpful. They make guacamole fresh at your table!! The chips are indeed some of the best chips I have had at a restaurant in the area. They have an AMAZING tequila selection (I always try a new one when I go). And their drink menu is indeed something worth trying. I had some tacos and the bowl. Both were great choices and I had plenty left over to take with me. Highly recommend if you have not tried this place out yet!
My favorite plate to eat when I visit Arizona! The staff is amazing, the food is to die for and don’t even get me started on the drinks!! We had margs with our table side guacamole, and the food was outstanding. This is a MUST!
Amazing Mexican food with great flavors! Happy hour from 2 to 6 everyday lots of choices of tequila and a great atmosphere with an open dining area large patio and a great bar. The bartender was awesome when I was sitting at the bar, definitely recommend this place! And with a parking garage close by there's plenty of parking.
The place was great. Service was speedy and the hostess was very attentive. The chips were delicious, fresh made and still warm and puffy. The salsa was on point, not too spicy and not too mild. The gringas were cheese, gooey and the meat was delicious. The husband ordered the quesabirrias and loved every bite. It was our first time trying the place and we'll definitely go back.
Great Mexican inspired dishes. They have phenomenal guacamole and black beans. Many of the taco choices have great flavors that are unique and interesting. There are several vegetarian options which will help when running with large groups. I am huge tequila fan and Barrio Queen's selection is impressive. Visit during happy hour to get some great deals on a small selection of popular choices. Barrio Queen is a fun place to take visitors to The Valley. The artwork is amazing and the staff are fun, friendly and helpful. P.S. My fourth photo includes my totes adorable niece...she just ups the atmosphere that much!
One of the best Mexican food place, courteous staff , very enjoyable atmosphere and you can definitely ask for the spicy tacos And great desserts especially their tres leches
We are locals and love our restaurants here in Gilbert Heritage District! Barrio Queen is no exception. Fantastic Happy Hour menu, excellent food overall and we cant say enough great things about Amber and her customer service. Amber is enough to make us want to come back... not to mention their signature taco menu... Great music and atmosphere make this one of Gilbert's top ethnic restaurants! Happy Hour include Azul shot and 2 tacos for $15... make it a double pour for $3 more... make it a margarita for $3... What a great value seeing Azul sells for $160 a bottle locally. We highy recommend The Peoples Choice Margarita made with Teremana! The guacamole is pretty awesome but their salsa and house corn tortilla chips are pretty awesome. If you're looking for a unique ethnic experience in a great setting, this is a spot you will appreciate and enjoy. If you appreciate art, especially dial de los muertos style, then this is the spot for you. Excellent outdoor seating with heaters and misters as needed plus great people watching of all the tourists surfing Gilbert Heritage strip! Fyi, all the parking is FREE throughout Gilbert so step out, walk around and enjoy!! See you soon!! Una Mas y muchas gracias...
Best quesadilla I've ever had. Loved how they charred it. Excellent service and fun decor.
Very good Mexican food, and the staff is super friendly. You must try the guacamole they prepare it in front of you and they let you choose the ingredients/topings you want in your guacamole, 100% recommended, plus the vibe and drinks are amazing.
We went on Taco Tuesday ($1 off most tacos) and were met by Taco Tara (waitress dressed in a taco suit). It was cheesy but not in an overbearing way and the service was very good! I had a 3 tacos: Al Pastor, Chorizo con huevo, and shrimp. All three were great! You can tell they put their own twist on each flavor. The tacos al pastor had pineapple (which for me is a must!) and although they didn’t taste like the tacos al pastor I’d get on the streets of México, it was a great flavor combo! Plus I didn’t come for street tacos, I came for fancy tacos! They did a fried egg for the chorizo con huevo, which was unique. Good flavor, but it was hard to keep the egg in the taco. And the shrimp (battered and fried) taco was good too. I always get agua de Jamaica, and theirs was good! I’d definitely go back, especially on taco Tuesday because I’m cheap and it wasn’t overly crowded either. The kids options were pretty good too. I was very pleased!
Best guacamole I've ever had! They make it in front of you at the table. Everything was delicious, and the service was awesome!
Barrio Queen in downtown Gilbert is a fantastic spot for vibrant Mexican food and a fun atmosphere. The flavors are bold and fresh, the margaritas are excellent, and the vibe is lively and welcoming. It’s a great place for a casual dinner, happy hour, or a night out in downtown Gilbert. Highly recommend!
Great staff, great service, great food, great atmosphere! Guacamole made at table side was fantastic! Definitely a favorite in Gilbert!
Came for happy hour after taking a break for a year as their quality and quantity had gone downhill. This time however I was not disappointed as the food was very good and the happy hour portions were excellent. I would recommend ordering from the Cocina list on the happy hour menu as you get more food for your money than ordering 2 tacos for the same $5 price. I also have to mention the chips and salsa. Chips were fantastic. Im pretty sure they were made in house as they were bubbly, crisp and hot coming out. I will definitely come here again for future happy hours!
This was my first time here and I really liked the vibe and decor. The chips and salsa were super tasty, the quesabirria tacos were packed with flavor, and the house margarita was great. I’ll definitely be back for happy hour to try more from the menu.
Overall a great experience. Our server made sure we were always ready. The chips were excellent to start the salsa was avg. the drink my wife got was excellent and how fast our food got to us was amazing. The burrito I got was a little cold but overall the taste was great. Wife was very happy with her 3 tacos. A little on the higher price side for what we got but overall worth a night out.
Excellent outdoor seating. Wait staff was friendly and accommodating. Food portions were just to our liking. Not too huge to feel we wasted money and cuisine. Downtown parking is ez and convenient.
My husband and I love Barrio Queen for authentic Mexican food! The food was incredibly delicious: Mexican shrimp coctel was fresh and seasoned well, the carnitas grilled cheese was great (first time having it) carnitas were cooked well and you can taste the Manteca just enough to give it the authentic carnitas flavor that we love. Tasted like we made it in our back yard! Lol The Mole trio enchiladas were good also, my favorite was the black mole enchilada not a big fan of the other two. You CAN request all enchiladas in 1 flavor just fyi :) great experience overall, will definitely continue to try other items on their menu! Our food did come out a bit cold but they had no problem fixing it which we loved how attentive they were! Overall amazing food and experience!
Our server David was amazing!!! The tacos were well seasoned and delicious and so were the guacamole, salsa and chips. It was a university parents night so the food took much longer than it would have on a normal night, but David was super accommodating and made sure to check in on us, refilling our waters frequently.
A really great mexican spot in the heart of downtown. No complaints, everything was good from the margaritas, to the table side guac, and all of our entrees. The Moriscos enchiladas were delicious and the steak ranchero was one of the best I’ve ever had. Really enjoyed our entire meal here.
We come here every time we visit our son. We've never had a bad meal or poor service. We like to try something new every time and have never been disappointed. If you visit Gilbert, don't skip this restaurant.
It was nice on a Sunday night. There weren't many people, we missed Happy Hour, but we had a few drinks, chips n salsa, and ordered dinner, which was delicious, and huge, so we could only eat half and thankfully took the other half home. I had the Arizona burrito, it's delicious. their rice and beans are so good. Their beans are Chorizo refried beans. Yup, just like Mami used to make.
It was my first visit, and I loved the vibe and decor right away. The food and drinks were delicious, especially the quesabirria tacos and margarita, so I’ll definitely be back to try more during happy hour.
We love this place and go at least once a week. We had friends in town and wanted to take them to my favorite Mexican with the yummiest guac!!! And she googled it before and said “this place has terrible reviews” which shocked me. I had to leave a positive review to my favorite Mexican restaurant. We love it here. Everyone is always so friendly and kind. Food comes out quickly. The staff is friendly to each other. Emma makes the best guac! Each server does it different. You won’t be sorry. Trust me. Try it.
I really wanted nachos! I've had plenty of nachos from coast to coast. These nachos were just ok. They were lacking in flavor and the pork that's on them is cubed. I prefer my meat on nachos shredded. I did get a side of their habanero salsa to try to spice it up and that helped a little. But then I decided to order the expensive, table side guacamole. That really helped! Nachos need guacamole!! The service was ok. The atmosphere was great. The bartenders were great when we asked for recommendations on some tequila shots. My husband ordered Death's Door and enjoyed it!
Food was ok just way over seasoned. Spice is great but let me taste the food. Chips are so hard they were impossible to eat.
Beautiful location, lots of sitting area outside for people watching on Gilbert Street. Excellent food and drinks 🍸. Has a large bar with lots of seating.
Great place to eat at! Was visiting from out of state and was recommended to Barrio Queen. The burrito itself was really good and filling and the atmosphere was great. Only issue was they seemed really understaffed so it took us 5 mins to even be spoken to to get seated and it wasn’t like it was busy. The guacamole though stole the show. It was just the best and lived up to the hype. Great place and glad I was able to eat here
First visit to Barrio Queen in downtown Gilbert — thought it was closed at first since the patio was empty… had it all to ourselves for a while! Chill vibe, smaller patio than the Tempe location, and since it's right next to the street, it could probably use a more frequent hosing down. Super friendly service, and no rush at all, which made it easy to kick back and catch up with friends. We hit happy hour and had tacos and a quesadilla — both were legit. The margarita + sangria which didn’t disappoint either. It's right in the heart of downtown Gilbert, so give yourself a little extra time to walk from the plentiful parking. We’ll definitely be back! Saluti 🌮🍹🌞
Went here on a Sunday night. Nice location and vibe to this restaurant. Very cool artwork on the walls. The service was awesome. The menue is a bit intimidating, but our sever did a great job explaining everything and proving recommendations. They have an excellent drink menu with award winning margaritas, which were very good, and I recommend trying. The food was also wonderful! The chips and salsa were different than I've had before the salsa had some heat and different flavor, which I thought was unique. I had the enchilada trio, and it was fantastic! For my side, I had Mexican rice and chorizo refried beans, which were the best refried beans I've had, and I definitely recommend them! Overall, we had a great experience and would recommend stopping here. We will definitely be back!
Overall, good experience, but food was room temperature when served to us. Which was really too bad, given it was flavorful. The waitress had apologized for our food taking so long; we hadn’t really taken notice of the delay. But then when the food did arrive a few minutes later, it was not hot, which would leave you to believe that it sat in the kitchen for a while. 2 of us ordered tacos and those were very good. The other 2 of us ordered two different types of enchiladas and we both commented that there wasn’t much filling. The tortillas were large and when rolled made the enchilada look sizable, but it was mostly the rolled tortilla and that was somewhat tough like it hadn’t been heated enough prior to filling. I took a star off for atmosphere because at 6:45pm (when we arrived) it was cold outside and 2 large ‘garage’ type roll-up doors were wide open and it was freezing inside the restaurant. We requested a table as far away from both doors as possible. Sometime during our dinner, the large door by the bar was closed, but the other one remained open. This time of year, we have beautiful afternoon weather, but once the sun goes down, it gets cold! This is nothing new; Someone needs to manage this more closely. I’ll be back because I’ve been here before and the food was very good. Although, I won’t order the enchiladas.
fish tacos to die for, carne was a little dry, but everything else was excellent. Tried the red pepper enchiladas and wasn't disappointed.
We're literally here RIGHT NOW! AND WHY DID YOU CHANGE YOUR CHIPS?!?!??? Travesty. Bring back the old chips they were the best in the industry! 5 stars for our server. 4 stars because your chips are now subpar.
Great location in the heart of downtown Gilbert. Plenty of seating both inside and on the patio. Bar seating as well. I would recommend the patio to enjoy some people watching and the nice weather! Came in on a Saturday night without a reservation and got seated pretty quick. They do have a DJ out on the patio which gave it a fun vibe. Nice sized menu overall with a good variety of dishes. I tried their Barrio Pollo Burrito - delicious! Decent size too. Ordered a classic margherita to pair with it. Very well made. They do have some seasonal dishes they offer which I thought was unique. I really like this location - easily walkable from anywhere in downtown Gilbert. Plenty of parking options as well. Good food and vibes here.
Service was very friendly but just not very good. Had to ask the server 2 and 3 times for most everything. The chips that came out were great. The food came out hot and fresh, to be honest, we just didn't like it. It might meet some people's tastes, we just didn't find it good.
Tuesday night- Hostess did not greet us just simply a dead stare. We were sat- table was sticky and not cleaned well by any means even though they were not busy. Gave us kids menus but no crayons. Server was great-attentive and timely. Food was okishh. The 2 adult meals were presented well but my enchiladas were just barely warm. Kids meals were odd- French fries were thrown on top of the tacos and then a random strawberry thrown on top of that. Also, the music kept turning off and on which was frustrating after a busy day. We usually go to the queen creek location and every thing is always great but we were closer to that one so decided to go there. Will not be going again.
I visited with my wife on a Saturday night around 5:30. Wait time was quoted as 35 min but took maybe 10. We ordered: 2 margaritas, a chicken quesidilla, elote ribs, 3 tacos, and a carne asada burrito. They got the taco order wrong bringing out only 2 tacos, one of which was wrong and they forgot the side of rice and beans that come with the burrito. It was quickly fixed after telling the bartender. The food was lack luster, poorly, if at all seasoned. The burrito was 3/4 black beans and 1/4 carne you get wayyyy more carne at Filibertos for a cheaper cost. The tacos were okay, but not worth $5.50 each. I would not go back.
46/person. With 80F the patio is the right place to be...!!! I order an Award winner!! "La cochinita", but that was a high expectation...with low tasty result. The plate looks good and a big plate but all flat taste -if that was an award winner I honestly don't want to try something else here-. Just the Agua de Jamaica and Agua de Horchata were ok for the expectation. So if u want to come to watch a game and have some drinks it may be ok... definitely won't come back.
Service is extremely slow. 40 minutes just to get the food… 30 minutes for desserts. They practically held us hostage…..Quesabirria tacos are mid.
We went to this place on a Sat around 6pm. It was dead and I'll explain why. The salsa was so mild it might as well be ketchup the food was sub-par to say the least. The table was extremely sticky and bathroom was so dirty. We will never ever be back.
I do not see how this place stays in business. Lunch today was almost inedible. 3 chicken enchiladas…chicken so overcooked, sauce was limited but not very tasteful.. Definitely won’t be back.
After talking to the waiter about the menu and the taco Tuesday specials we were informed about the dollar off tacos except the premium. As well as he offered us margaritas that were "on special" blood orange to be exact. Ordered tacos and I didn't know they were going to look the way they did. Little amount of meat and not filling whatsoever. The corn was the only good part. Rice had minimal flavor. Had to order more tacos since I was committed to that restaurant. 6 tacos small portion of rice and corn. 2 blood orange margaritas total added to $65 dollars. Definitely didn't get any great service had minimal of that as well. The waiter seen us 3 times 1 to place order 2 to place another order and 3 gave me the check and I wanted dessert so I guess that was the end of that transaction. 1 star all the way around.
Horrible service. Party of 4 and we only received 2 waters in 20 minutes. We had to go up to the bar to ask for 2 more. It took about an hour to receive our food. Once we received our food we couldn’t eat it because we had no silverware for the Enchilada Trio. We had to get up and get silverware off of another table. No napkins. Tacos with zero sauces offered or available. They were very dry. We also had to get up to ask for the check. Service was horrible. We would never go back or recommend this place. It was too bad because the atmosphere was nice and it has potential. It’s no wonder other places were busy and this place wasn’t. The service says it all.
Not a good visit to this location. After finishing an awesome Pilates workout from my soon to be trainer friend, our group decided to go to this location to celebrate. Needless to say by this review the experience was not the greatest compared to the other locations I’ve been to. It was about 2 hours before close and the restaurant was not that busy. Hostess was great and seated us right away. It took about 5-7 mins before we say our server and offered water even though we seen the server in question chatting with bartender. After placing a single drink order and receiving chips and salsa we had to flag down the runner to get more salsa and chips while we waited on our food. The food was not great. It was probably the worse dinner I’ve had at a barrio queen. It made Taco Bell feel gourmet. The fajitas were cold, the tacos were cold, the beans looked like that were burnt from a can, not to mention they looked like carrots. Chicken was dry and lacked flavor, beans lacked flavor, rice hadn’t been seasoned. All in all, we wasted about $100 on food. We should have went to clever koi like we originally planned. Horrible experience and terrible food.
Well this one hurts, came in for Tequila week excited to try and do it all week. Not going to happen, as always here is why. First off our bartender was amazing she was smiling excited to be at work great insight and our actual drinks where spot on!! Then from there the questions of how do you mess up simple Mexican food. Here is how by not putting any chicken in the enchiladas and then folding them so tight as if that was going to hide them. So you can see in the pictures I cut one right in the middle and no meat, for that matter no cheese or anything. Last one I opened all the way up so you could see what they where trying to pass as meat. It was one fork full. Glad I had the sides of rice and veggies since my meal turned vegan. The wife had the carnitas and it actually had meat but zero flavor and I am not even sure how you cook carnitas with no flavor. The wife did say the guacamole was good and happy she received some extra pomegranate for the dip. As you can tell I don’t always rate bad and I am always fair to who serves as well as the food as separate parts of the reviews not all places are a total fail. However the kicker to this tail of tequila week ends with a swift kick that the wife is lucky she told me as we were walking back to the car… $100 bucks come on now are you serious!!! Not worth $50 with tip!! Won’t be finishing the Tequila week here that’s for sure.
Let me start out with saying that the food looks good. However, the customer service was atrocious. Given that the server may be new, how new is yet to be determined. We had a group of six and he messed up every single order. One of my friend didn't get his drink for like 30 minutes after everyone else had received theirs. Another friend ordered a bowl with chicken and the chicken was missing. No one had any silverware until after the food came out and another 10 minutes after asking for them. The items were mixed up between different people's bills. Then he ran the card under the wrong bill. Things that were supposed to be comped because of their own mix up were not. The only positive things I could say about my experience was that the food was decent, choices of tequila was nominal, and that they was were to seat us quickly when every other places in downtown Gilbert was atleadt a 30 minutes wait.
Just another corporate white man Mexican cuisine restaurant. Absolutely no flavor in any of the dishes or sides. The only positive experience was paying the bill so we could get out of there.
Want small food portions and expensive tiny drinks? Vegetables past their prime on your table? Talk to the manager about it?? Manager doesn't care!! I took my wife to lunch on the patio. First time at the Downtown Gilbert location, but we've been to another Barrio Queen and it was great. She had a shrimp cocktail ($14.75) with tequila, and I had 3 tacos/$15 with a Cadillac Margarita ($19.50 for 8/10-oz). Wifey wanted ice for the tequila, so that was an extra $2. The shrimp cocktail was in a large schooner (24-30 oz?) but literally had one cut-up shrimp in it. It was laughable. I asked for the manager. He came out and "greeted" us as if we were bothering him. We showed him the lack of shrimp, and he replied that it's mixed in a batch and unfortunately it came out that way to our table. I told him the cook should check it before leaving the kitchen so these problems don't arise at the table. He agreed to provide more shrimp. Result: more shrimp but still the red sauce was crappy, the shrimp had no taste, and the overall shrimp cocktail had not real "shrimp cocktail taste" to it. Wifey picked out the shrimp and ate them separately. I also added to the manager that the Cadillac Margarita and tacos were small, and he replied "That's corporate." Yeah OK, I get it--street tacos, but a $20 Cadillac Margarita that small?? After the manager left, I started to eat the veggie garnish on my taco plate, which was a single slice each of carrot and radish. The radish was discolored. What should have been the all white inside was partly gray and brown. It was certainly not fresh, and should have been tossed out a couple days ago. I asked for the manager again (our poor waitress--she was doing a fine job). He greeted us in a similar manner. I showed him the discolored vegetable and asked if the restaurant should be serving this. He took it and inspected it, then broke it, part of it awkwardly falling on the pavement. He said it was just discolored and was okay to serve, and that was that... We obviously disagreed, and with nothing more from the manager we finished, paid and left.
Recently had dinner with family and friend. I ordered a chimichanga, asked the waiter if they could do it enchilada style with green sauce. Was informed that would be no problem. When served it had red sauce under it, no sauce at all covering it. Told the waiter that I had asked for enchilada style with green sauce. He left and came back with some kind of sauce, but it was not the green sauce like my two companions had. It was very thick and had no flavor. Tried to eat the chimichanga but the machaca shredded beef was so over cooked it was hard to cut, let alone eat. Nearly impossible to chew. Both of my companions had issues with their meals as well. Barrio Queen won't be doing the company party and we won't be returning there.
We frequently visit Barrio Queen in Tempe and Scottsdale and we love them but what a difference management makes! First time at Gilbert location and our group of 4 were initially the only people there on a Sunday afternoon while the rest of downtown Gilbert was busy! First I noticed that the entire floor was dirty with crumbs and pieces of what appeared to be napkins.. Then their frozen Margarita machine was broken and they had no cocktail straws. The food was actually great and the regular margaritas were just okay. Our server seemed distracted and not very attentive. Maybe an off day. Next time in Gilbert we will go to Joyride which is a block south and the BEST for food and they have exceptional margaritas!!
