Was chuffed the BBQ rice comes with a bowl of soup (the kind your mom makes in a big pot at home), both were authentic and yummy. 🤤 I’ve tried a few different bbq pork places in Oakland and SF, and this place ranks in my Top 3. Tip for if you’re eating in: walk straight in and make as if to seat yourself, they’ll move you if needed. Otherwise, you’ll get stuck in the takeout line like me. 🤣)

My wife is from China and we often eat here, sometimes with her parents. The food is really excellent, we all agree. And authentic to South-East China, where they are from. Service is fast and friendly. The decor is very simple and the prices are less than most other Chinese restaurants (many of which don't match C&M's taste and quality.) Oakland's Chinatown has really picked up since the end of the COVID crisis. The restaurant is usually busy, very busy today since the larger restaurant upstairs in the complex is closed on Tuesdays It is in an enclosed complex with other shops, banks, offices, and a public library branch on the first two floors and apartments above that. There is parking on three basement floors and the elevator takes you right outside the restaurant. It always feels safe, lots of people of all ages shopping or just hanging around sitting in the sun. Lots of people shopping in Chinatown or working there go to C&W for lunch and eating there feels like being part of the community. I have never been there at dinnertime. You probably wouldn't want to take someone to dinner there on a date or have a big family party. They don't have the big round tables for that anyway. But go upstairs to the other restaurant for those things.

I've only tried their roast pork belly, cha siu, and roast duck, but they're all really good. The pork belly is definitely my favorite with the crispy crackling. There is always a line out of the store and they run out of certain items in the afternoon. Good sign, imo.

This is one of my top favorites in the area. You can wait in line at the front for take out or you can dine in. The harsh reality is the lines is long sometimes. I usually come get a lunch box. It comes with a thick scoop of rice. A scoop of broccoli and your choice of protein : Duck,Chicken,Pork and then there are other entrees they have as well if you want . They also sell proteins by the pound.

Went there for lunch. Very friendly people. I was the only "white person" there and had a "Western plate" rice with broccoli beef. It was delicious and an excellent value. I will eat there again.

A traditional Chinese BBQ restaurant with a hearty breakfast menu is perfect for the right crowd. It's hard to beat a big bowl of noodles with duck and a drink for $10. The food is good and comforting and prices are reasonable, but it's far from a typical cozy eatery. If you're dining in, just sit at a table and wait. It might take a while for someone to acknowledge you. But on the bright side, food comes out pretty quickly after your order is taken. There can be a communication barrier. I don't speak Mandarin or Cantonese (they mostly speaking Canto) and had trouble understanding the server. The server also cleared my bowl at the end before I decided whether or not I was done (it was probably for the better), likely in an effort to turn tables more efficiently. Communication is definitely a weak point for serving non-Chinese speaking customers. Card payments under $20 are not accepted. I paid with cash and wonder if they would have brought change for my $10 meal if I did not explicitly request it. Tldr; come for the food, not the experience Pros: reasonably priced food, breakfast menu Cons: communication barrier for non-Chinese speakers, efficient turnover

This is the $9.50 breakfast. The price is amazing. Comes with noodle soup, choice of meat, and drink. They give you the duck separate from the noodle so that it maintains crispy skin and flavor. This is a thoughtful touch that I don’t see often. By this, I think the other bbq would be good. It’s my first time trying this place.

An authentic Hong Kong-style BBQ diner. Mediocre in HK standard, but above average on the East Bay. Their char siu BBQ pork and crispy pork are some of the best in China Town.

We had their lunch special which included any 3 dishes from the menu for $40. An additional $16 for salt fish fried rice. Each dish was large and plentiful and each one came thermally hot and tasty. Clay pot meat could have been cooked longer, bristle was tough. Service was quick too. We got there ahead of the lunch crowd. A popular place, people waving to be seated or waiting at the meat counter. We enjoyed the food. We come here ever time we visit the in laws.

Accidentally stumbled on this hidden gem in Oakland Chinatown, selling traditional HK BBQ meats! I ordered their BBQ pork on rice set for $8.50 and added roast pork for extra $2 which were both delicious. Although the meat wasn’t fresh out of the oven, their BBQ pork had good mix of lean and fatty meat, the roast pork was juicy and its roasted almost-fried like skin was really crispy - they also added a bit of the meat sauce which was pleasantly flavorful and balanced e (not too salty or sweat) that had a nice silky consistency versus some other stores that douse the BBQ meat with thick overpowering sauce that covers up the natural roasted flavors of the meat. Interestingly, they also give seaweed salad on top of the cold broccoli which was a great addition since it added a bit of sharpness and vinegary flavor to cut throw the fatiness of the meats - really smart choice to add this to their meal. Overall great quality meats and good value, would definitely come again. NOTE: They only accept credit card for orders over $20. Support small businesses with cash instead!

This is is located inside the Pacific Renaissance Plaza at Oakland. Next to this also sell the similar dishes but this one seems more popular and busy. it sells charsiu, barbeque pork, soy sauce chicken, yellow chicken, roast duck, some veggie and meat. You can order other dishes from the kitchen. You can buy rice plate with meat or just the meat. You can eat in as they have table serving. The Service it pretty slow as they the person at the station prepare for to go and eat in at the same time. We bought charsiu and barbeque pork. They are juicy and yummy. There are 2 things I cannot stand. First is the large flies flying around the bbq pork rib and landed on it. The worker either didn't pay attention of just ignore it. I was hoping it doesn't land on other meat which I want to buy. The second one is the worker from the could be kitchen , just go to the station and start scoping dishes into his bowl I think got his lunch. It is not seems hygiene.

A very homey eatery, with an actively take out line. Cantonese is being spoken here, adds a little flavor. One girl serves the sit down customers, about seven diners scattered on 3 tables, on a Friday evening. Oakland’s Chinatown is like a ghost town due to crime, according to locals … The service is friendly and quick, food is good: - walnut prawns - good (sweet but I can’t resist; walnuts are really good) - salt pepper fish fillet - batter is thick - salty fish, chicken and tofu clay pot - good They don’t serve liquor. Bathroom is a trip and I won’t let my child going there alone. It’s outside of the restaurant, the same passage to the Mail room, garage and loading bays (?) A few (IF not the only) remaining spots that has a decent crowd, very sad. What a terrible scene and horrible situation for the merchants, and customers.

When we come to Oakland C & M Bistro is one of the places we stop at. They have serve/sell some of my favorite foods like Roasted Pork Belly and BBQ pork so good! The service I am not fan of and I can say that because I have been here more than three times and it’s always the same. There’s always a line, when it’s your turn you gotta have your list ready, and if you don’t they’ll rush you. People tell me it’s the “culture” but I guess I am still not used to it. But I keep coming back because the food is good. The restaurant has a few tables so you can actually sit and eat. The place needs a little TLC but it’s okay by me. The price is ok. I haven’t notice the price go up that much. It’s definitely affordable.

Ordered a preserved egg and pork porridge, which took about 20 minutes to serve, which was surprising given how empty it was. Seems to be a better spot for bbq and to go lunches. Porridge wasn't too bad. It came out piping hot, but I'd still hit up Gum Kuo next door for proper porridge.

We got a hainan chicken and a chasiu set which were pretty good - value and a nice lunch but they charge a few extra dollars for you to dine in ($2-3 pp it’s been awhile and I’ve forgotten the exact prices.) But because of this fee, I didn’t want to pay a full tip and they called and stopped me for another $1 tip 😑

In context: ordered the BBQ Pork Won Ton Soup without noodles. Don’t get me wrong, their already prepared meats at the front of the restaurant with the butchers are tasty and serviceable including the BBQ Pork that came with the Won Ton Soup. But for $14.00 not including tip, the Won Ton itself and the stock/soup base is not worth it. The Won Ton is just one small-medium size shrimp but it is surrounded by nothing but dough. All you taste is the thick dough and very sheisty and cheap of their filling. There is no combination with shrimp and pork like other places. The stock/soup base is very bland. They use ice berg lettuce instead of Bok Choy. Very disappointing. Will never order this again. Not worth it. I had superior Won Ton soup from the next door restaurant.

Advertising closing at 6pm. Walked in at 5:15pm. I was told only available food are from the BBQ. What a joke! I immediately walked over next store. The food is good - but the price on the menu is very confusing for the BBQ meats which will trick you to pay the same price but get half of the product. For example - BBQ meats to go for 11.55 / lb, if your order the same item, they gave you a small plate looks around 0.5 lb but make you pay the same price. When we asked they mumbled - we have no problem paying, but just can’t understand why the same dish will be reduced in half when eating inside. Please be cautious if you are dining in - just order all the BBQ stuff to go. Hope this is helpful.

I came here with my parents to get brunch. When we sat down, the waitress didn’t even bother giving us menus. My dad had to get up to grab menus from the BBQ counter. One of the waitresses finally came to our table to drop off utensils, napkins and take our orders. We advised the waitress that she only dropped off utensils for 2 people, she said she would be back with a 3rd. I ordered a wonton soup with char siu pork. My parents ordered a roast duck and roast chicken rice plate. I also asked for a glass of ice water which never appeared. My parents food arrived within 15 minutes, I waited for another 15 minutes for my soup to arrive. When the soup arrived, it did not have any char siu pork. I also told the waitress that I don’t have utensils and the soup is missing an item but the waitress walked away. By now, my parents are almost finished with their food and I’m still trying to get a waitresses attention. I had to stand up and chase a waitress down by the kitchen with my soup in hand. While explaining to her that my soup is missing an item, I have no utensils and I’m still waiting for my water; the waitress had the nerve to yell back that they are extremely busy and that she has no time to attend to my needs. After sitting back down, I had to wait for another 10 minutes before I was served my char siu pork separately and I still did not have utensils or the water I ordered. I told the cook that delivered my char siu pork that their service is absolute BS due to the fact that it took almost an hour for them to get a complete soup to a table. My utensils finally arrived but when I asked for my water the waitress just walked away.

NOT RECOMMENDED 👎Over priced food for a super small portion. The $40(plus tax is $45) for 3 dishes special comes in a very small portion of food. Not worth the money. That’s like $15 for one tiny dish. I would recommend another restaurant nearby which is $40 after tax, it comes in a full size portion of food and tastes way better than this restaurant!

Very bad customer service! The first time to buy the eggplants, I have no idea how big it would be, so I asked for the midium container. When the lady found out I just wanted 1 lb, she called me "crazy guy" in Cantonese. I was so mad because she is so rude! The, I bought the BBQ Pork, I asked for the sauce on the side, she charged me 50 cents more. I bought $55 total. I cannot believe she charged me 50 cents extra fo the sauce on the side

Order two different soups and both tasted like they had no soup stock. Just water. Ordered a rice soup with seafood. The shrimp tasted like it'd been frozen and unfrozen and packed taste. The barbecue duck and chicken was okay but I highly recommend looking at another restaurant nearby. They're using the cheapest ingredients and it shows.

I came here with my mom at 4 pm and this server with a short bob comes over and says " you have to give 15% tip for every meal starting now " ( in Cantonese) before we even ordered. She expects us to give a 15% tip no matter how the service is. My parents always gave cash as a tip whenever we dined-in. She said in Cantonese " It's a policy that we always had but you never gave enough tip and we didn't say anything so now if you want to eat here, you have to give at least 15%" It was not written anywhere on any sign, just by her saying it to us I noticed that on past receipts where it gives you the suggested 15%, 18%, 20% tip. They are not even the correct amounts. It's off of the TOTAL amount INCLUDING the tax. I always had to calculate it myself. We always gave cash. It was never the suggested 15% tip because that was wrong. It was always close to 15% of the subtotal. A few years ago, there was a 15% service charge for every single table. It didn't matter if you were a party of 1 or a party of 10, there was always 15% service charge. UNTIL this past year where the laws changed so they had to remove it. I was a server for 6 years so l always give a good tip IF the service was good. I know everything about being a server. This really bothered me. Her service was ALWAYS subpar. She never smiled, always gave attitude, never filled our water cups, walked over only 3 times just to give us our food from the kitchen. Does she deserve a tip? No, but we always gave a tip. She had the audacity to enforce a 15% tip even before service was given. Ridiculous. Never dine here unless you want surprise charges on your receipt. We went to Sushi House instead and gave a 18% tip to a server that actually deserved it.
