Tip: A great spot for a cheap drink and some games. Be aware that it can get rowdy and the bathrooms aren't the cleanest.

Avis sur Chanticleer Ithaca
Ithaca's official dive bar. (yes there are other 'dives' in town, but the Chanti (as it's called locally) is special. Almost its own caricature of a dive bar. It's actually a pretty well kept place and a very big step above the true dive. Pretty large liquor selection and several taps. The crowds can range in every direction. A couple locals will be at the quiet bar earlier and college kids tend to fill it in after 11. Really is a must-stop-tour-stop to get a taste of Ithaca. Yes, the same Chanticleer in the song by X-Ambassadors, yes that place with the giant glowing rooster outside, yes to that weird Walking Dead pinball machine, yes to the downloadable jukebox playing some odd songs, yes to that blood red billiards table and yes to some of the cheapest drinks in Ithaca. Just no food and if you've been there enough, you would be good with that.
Fun dive bar in Ithaca. Beer, liquor, and possibly wine available. Interesting mix of people hanging out.

the bartender was such a great guy! loved it so much and had the best time
There was no food except for chips to buy. So I don't know why it's asking me to review food. The bar is great. Feels like a hometown bar. The bartender and staff make you feel at home. A bartender even streams the bar on twitch under PorkMarshmallow so we chatted with people watching while we were there.
A great local watering hole. The space is tight, the patrons loud, and the music trashy. I love it. You won't find any Cornell or IC students here, which is nice for a change. Prices are more than reasonable, and the staff has personality for days. Don't expect a warm welcome, but you'll feel at home soon enough.
I love, love, love, LOVE this seedy little dive bar! ESPECIALLY ALL OF THE CHICKEN DECOR!!!! They have a pool table, a dart board, a pinball machine, and a juke box! The drinks were good and service was fast. Really chill atmosphere. I highly recommend!
Local staple. It's an old place, decorated with roosters everywhere, but it's got character and charm! Definitely a mixed crowd, both college students and locals. Local drafts on tap and plenty of other drink options. Electronic dart board and pool table, as well as digital jukebox and pinball. Two single bathrooms.
Classic Upstate NY, old school drinking bar. No food, which is perfect for this joint. Original art deco decor with lots of beautiful polished old wood throughout. Without question the Chanti has the greatest original neon lighting. Inside and out. Best I've ever seen. Drink prices are beyond cheap. If you appreciate old school drinking bars you owe it to yourself to stop in. If you want an Appletini, this ain't your spot.

The Chanty is a staple and landmark for historical downtown Ithaca. Every visit here is chill and cheap. The 🐓 sign is your signal to stop in and hang in an intimate place offering: darts, pool, and good ol juke player. Feels more local folk than college kids. A plus for us OG ithaca workers. It's been almost ~20 years since I started going . It was always the place to go after work drink and an '5 o'clock somewhere' place on a day off. The Chanty is an easygoing classic place to just have a drink with your friends.

Nice bar for a pre-concert beverage next to The State Theater in Ithaca.
Went for my work Christmas party, upstairs loft was spacious and fun! One of the bartenders was friendly, so was the one downstairs, but the other girl seemed to be having an off day.. drinks were good and priced well
I visited the Chanticleer for the first time after a 25th High School reunion event. Really visiting Ithaca for the first time since I turned 18 the "Rooster" bar was one of the landmarks that I remembered. The visit didn't disappoint. Despite having a single bartender serving the crowd, he was fast and efficient. Drinks were reasonably priced (Honestly they were pretty cheap). Other reviews have said unfriendly, I didn't find it so, by the end of the night I had him laughing a couple of times over the Amaretto Sours two of my friends were ordering.
I always have fun at The Chanty. Just a bar though. No food, no coffee, nothing pretentious. Keep walking on to the Commons if that's what you're looking for. Just easy bar conversation, decent beer prices and attentive bartenders. The pool table is always in use too.
This is where hipsters that say they like dive bars are truly tested. This is a fantastic dive of terrible bass based music pumping as you play pinball and sip Miller Lites. Frowny faced bar tenders add character and make you feel like you've made at least a few right decisions in your life. The wood panelling on the walls match the raw wood bar, chairs, stools, and tables and compliment the cock-inspired motif. If the giant neon rooster on the outside wasn't enough for you, they hammer the theme home by being the only place this side of Kentucky that has decided upon chicken wallpaper. It's a true gem among piles of hippie head shops and ping pong tournaments.

Local-est of local dive bars in Ithaca (Close second is Uncle Joes). The beer prices are actually really good! Selection is decent. When it's quiet, it's a cool bar. Can get a little rowdy when some of the locals file in. Try to avoid using the bathroom here.

From what I gather this place used to be the go-to dive in Ithaca. Right now it occupies a very awkward middle spot where it's too divey for college kids and too modernized for the old guard. Dim the lights a little bit!
I an not the biggest fan of this place. I have been there a few times now and have yet to actually enjoy it. Female friends have been grabbed, the bartender told me he didn't want to make my drink so order something else (I ordered a black and tan...), and someone threw a plastic dart at me and called me a dirty ginger. Totally not kidding. At least the last one was taken care of by the bouncer.

As a long-time customer, a large part of what made the atmosphere at Chanti was the bartenders. This place was like Cheers for many of us, where everybody knows your name. Now all of those friendly faces, some of whom I had seen behind the bar or working the door for 15+ years, are gone. Their dedication was rewarded by being fired with no notice. And for what? To become a third Moonies location. And their reopening advertising talking about it being "the same bar you know and love" is sickening when what we knew and loved included the bar staff with familiar faces. Trying to build off a 70 year reputation that those employees really helped build when you've changed the place fundamentally is certainly a choice. The Chanti isn't the Chanti anymore. Times change and reformats happen, but there would be a lot less backlash if they had treated the long-time employees with respect in the process. Like, at least give them a few weeks notice so they can line up other work, that's just basic courtesy for people who have been part of the fabric of the place for so long. Oh, and hire an actual graphic designer or at least someone who can spell for your social media instead the AI garbage you're putting out now. I certainly will "leve" the new place, I'm not feeling the "cloan vibes" the AI is giving off. Can't block us here like they're doing to anyone who has even mild criticism on facebook.

New bartenders now, and the guy working treated me like a college kid- I’m a grown 30 year old man who owns Chanticleer merch and contributed to the rooster restoration. Absolute shame, this place will never be the same, and shame on the new owners who are pushing out locals to cater to college kids in a town with nearly no local spots left. This bar used to be representative of the town- a shame to see it follow the path of Lot 10 and others now clearly chasing “the money”….
Best bar in town bar none. A dive bar no doubt but warm and real and with lovely staff. EDIT: They fired all their staff without warning so...naw. They can get wrecked. Do better
I love me a good dive bar - but this ain't one of them!!!! I'm honestly pretty appalled by the service here...
