Avis sur Hawi Ethiopian Cuisine Ithaca
We got the special combo platter with the Keysir and the Kilt. it’s plenty of food for two people. We liked the raw beef and the chicken, and we thought the stewed beef was okay. Food came out a little bit slower but overall not too bad.
The food was delicious and there was plenty of it. The atmosphere was nothing special, and as others have remarked, the service was not particularly quick. On the other hand, the servers themselves were perfectly nice people; if you are not in a hurry and have some patience, the result is very much worth it. I have waited much longer for much less. I will also second the suggestion that you make a reservation if you are eating around 6pm. The restaurant filled up pretty quickly and did not clear out with the same celerity.
food was exceptional! I mean no harm when I say that, but I was not expecting the food to be this incredible, coming from NYC. But Hawi was exceedingly delicious! I ordered the veggie platter for 1, and it was full of flavor. I recommend all who visit to come here!!
This is my favorite restaurant in town. As a parent to a young child, I don’t get out as much as I used to for dinner and I look forward to eating here for a night out. The food is so flavorful, great portions, and I dream about those beets. The meat is good too but I am partial to the veggie dishes. The mint lemonade is delicious. I would highly recommend! It’s a fun place to eat with friends or a date.
Hands down my favorite flavorful restaurant in Ithaca. The aroma’s n tastes are intoxicating and it’s a great deal. You can get two meats and three veggie dishes for two people for such a great price. I hope this place flourishes and stays in this community.
The best restaurant in Ithaca I've been to. Me and my wife ordered a special combo for 2 people and it was definitely worth it. We chose kik and kilt as veggies and mint lemonades as drinks. Also, they serve this type of combo with chicken Doro Wat, beef Derek Tibs and steak tartar Kitfo. Everything was perfect and delicious. The only thing is that almost all food (except some veggies) is very spicy (for most Europeans). It's really hot even if the menu says "medium" level. But it's even better because you feel that it's the authentic Ethiopian cuisine as it should be. Free glasses of water and cold mint lemonades help a lot after spicy dishes! :) Waiting time was normal and the waiter was a very nice guy who treated us well! So, I definitely recommend this place to everybody who wants to try real Ethiopian cuisine or simply spend their evening in some good restaurant
If there is one place to hit up when you are staying in or near downtown Ithaca, this is definitely the place! I discovered this quaint Ethiopian restaurant while living in downtown Ithaca as a Cornell student, and it’s now the first and only restaurant I go to when I’m back in town. The food is absolutely delicious and made me fall in love with Ethiopian cuisine! My go to is always the individual entree with Doro tibs as the meat of choice and gomen and kilt as my sides. Not only is the food incredible, the portion you get for the price is unbeatable. For context, my ‘go to’ dish (pictured) is less than $25 (excluding tip)! The service here is always a big plus. I had gone at 7PM on a weeknight during the dinner rush, and I seriously think I waited 10 minutes or less for my food. The staff is also super friendly, attentive, and the overall atmosphere is a whole vibe. Would DEFINITELY recommend to check this place out!
I tried this Ethiopian restaurant because I've had many Northern African and Middle Eastern dishes. Service is great, but they are short staffed so be patient. This is a dining experience in a rustic setting. We had the individual dishes, and they were very large. There are also dishes for two as maybe a better price/option. Yebeg Alichca and Yebeg Wat were delicious. The four sides were fabulous, too. Wat, Kik, Gomen and the veggies were great compliments to the Yebeg. The dishes are served with pastry rolls, something like a cepe, to use as an eating utensil. Worth the stop in!!!!
Huge portions, delicious food, and a completely unique experience. Great place to go with multiple people and share plates, as there will definitely be enough to go around. The mint lemonade was fantastic, and the tortilla like bread (forgot name) was delicious and a great way to enjoy the food. Very filling and would definitely come back.
Beautiful little spot with amazing variety of dishes. My partner and I had the vegan sampler platter for 2 and it was fantastic! If you are very hungry two people can finish one platter but lots of other guests took theirs to-go so very worth the price and very generous sized portions. Nothing on the platter was spicy, so if you aren’t into spicy food this would be excellent. Highly recommend the mint lemonade and the platters to share. The injera was very nice as well and we had plenty of it to eat our meal with. Ethiopian coffee was wonderful after dinner.
I've never had Ethiopian food, but I now want more and more. I don't know the specific food I ordered, some beef, lentils, and goat, but they were all so flavorful, spicy, and hearty. Perfect to warm me up and fill me up on a cold night. The peanut butter coffee was the highlight though, it was like a peanut butter version of hot chocolate! So good. I would love to come back if I'm ever in Ithaca again.
The food was really good. The waiter was very nice and friendly but they are understaffed. Several tables and just one waiter. We had the veggie and meat combo. Meat we had the lamb and beef. Lamb was a very good option. The mild option might still be a bit for those who can't really tolerate spicy food.
We were there on Sunday afternoon in August. They are currently seem to short in staffs. I will recommend to take this as precaution and give your self time to “wait” but not to avoid as definitely recommend this place! The server did his best to take care of a few tables. However, it took around 45min for the food to come out, and I think they short of staff in the kitchen as well. We ordered the combo and it’s delicious! No regrets and we feel that it worth the wait.
Not easy for gluten free. We double checked if the injera was gluten free. 1. It is not, depite the fact that traditional injera is gluten free. 2. We were told they could make it gluten free with 24 hours notice AND for $5 extra. The largest up-charge for gluten free Ive encountered. 3. The waiter suggested rice instead...but they don't have rice. So it was suggested to go somewhere else to get rice first. We love ethiopian food so we tried it anyway the next day, and it was...not our favorite ethiopian food.
This place is nothing out of the extraordinary. It was our first time here. We arrived and were told it would be a 20 minute wait. Fair enough. We were seated within the estimated time bit it took over 15 minutes to get water. A few minutes later the waiter came by to take our order. The food took about 30 minutes to be served. We had to flag the waiter down for utensils, napkins and more water. We were never checked on. The food was not bad. It was actually good. Hopefully this was just a one time thing. Moreover, and the main reason for my 3 star review, is twofold and directly related to our waiter. First we had to listen to the unsolicited, unwelcomed political diatribe from the waiter. I’m not here for the left, right or any place in between. I just want to experience a good meal. Secondly, the waiter had a very condescending attitude. I’m hoping someone from management reads this and addresses the issue.
The food is great, the Mushroom Tibs was especially delicious, it's full of flavor with well-balanced seasoning. However, the service kind of ruined the dining experience. I guess it depends on the waiter, and unfortunately, ours seemed upset from the moment we arrived. He didn’t bother to mention the names of the dishes, and at one point he even tossed the wet wipes onto our table when we were nearly finished. We still left a 20% tip as it seems to be the culture here, but I couldn’t help wondering what we had done wrong to deserve such poor attitude.
I’ve eating at many Ethiopian restaurants throughout the country and in Europe, and this was the worst I’ve had. The veggie dishes tasted too sweet and other dishes were too salty. The service was not bad but our server was obviously miserable and had a bad attitude. They also charge automatic gratuity which is fine, but the 6 dollar sharing fee is excessive. The portions are massive and way too much for just one person. Definitely feels like a tourist trap.
