It was the best place where we ate in Madrid. Tinto verano was delicious and the dishes, which were just some tapas, were a delight. We had the croquetes, some fried sausage and patatas bravas. Everything nice and hot and completely savoury. The place is not that big, but hat makes it friendly and cosy.
We were directed to this small restaurant by a local for some good Spanish food. I'm so glad we did because this place was awesome and we probably would not stumble upon this place if otherwise. Croquets are supposedly their specialty. We ordered the mushroom and leek croquet and the tuna onion croquet. Both were really good. I can see why thus us their specialty. We also had the rattatoille and stuffed peppers. Both were equally delicious. Try this place...you won't regret it.
Famous for the "croquetas" (typical bechamel based, small breadcrumbed fried food rolls), I also like their ensaladilla and the meatballs (watch out though, quite garlicy!). Always, always packed because it's quite small and quite famous for raciones (dishes to share) in Malasaña. Yet people keep coming in and find their way to the counter or to a small table. So, just don't be shy!
October 2023 - This was a wonderful local spot that served excellent Croquettes and Vermouth. A late night visit, sitting among the exchange students and locals. Would revisit.
What a joy, no matter that english speaking person is rarity, food is perfect, service more than excellent, won't miss it when I visit Madrid next time, highly recoomend this place!

I liked it. They specialise in croquettes so I had to try them. I took the black pudding and quince one as well as the blue cheese. They were tasty and the coating on the outside was nice and thin. I could have had more black pudding and blue cheese flavour, respectively, but all in all good croquettes. I think it would be a nice place to come with some friends so you can try a large variety of croquettes and other tapas dishes. I came at 18:30 and knew it would be quiet but it just happened to work with my schedule. I'd say come after 8 to get more of a buzz. By the way, the vermouth (which came with some olives, which is always a pleasure) is a new one for me and was ridiculously good!
Went for dinner right at 6pm. Me and my husband were the only ones there. We went for the 12pc croquete, patatas bravas and their tinto sangria. The croquetes were bigger than the other places we had during our visit to spain so 12 were too much for us to finish! The beef croquete was a bit salty and the mushroom and the ham didn't have enough mushrooms or ham. Not the best we had but was ok. I enjoyed the patatas bravas and the sangria otherwise.
We decided to try Casa Julio after getting a recommendation from a local. It's a small, traditional tapas place. It was packed on a late Thursday evening. Two bartenders running the place. Menu is up on the wall, no English menu available. - Bread and olives - complimentary. Olives were decent, bread dry. - Lacuesta reserva (3,70€) - dry style from Riośa. Smooth, didn't find it particularly dry. - Vermuza con lupolo (4,00€) - sweet style with hops from Huesca. Well balanced. - 1/2 Croquetas (8,00€ for 6) - favourite was the bonito. Croquetas were perfectly fried. - 1/2 Papas con mojo picón (3,50€) - sauces were tasty, potatoes cooked just right. An enjoyable, cheap tapas meal at CJ.
Local and authentic nice tapas bar. They have English menu with a QR code but it's hard to communicate ( although they are trying) so be prepared for the things you would like to order. I had a really nice salmorejo, it was a big and generous dish that comes with the house bread. My disappointment was from the meatballs dish, it's home coocking style and the sauce was good the problem was with the meat balls, they were way too salty to eat. I thought maybe its only one of them but I couldn't eat the rest. I informed the waitress but didn't get any response (Communication in English wasn't effective and got charged with the full price..)
We are visiting from Canada and had this restaurant in our list for must eat places. The service was great and the food was quick. The QR code menu has photos and English available to make ordering easier as well. Food was a tad bit salty but for the price, it is definitely great value. We got the half portions as well so we can try more items which worked out great since it was a great portion to share 3-4 items for two people.
Don’t understand the prior reviews. We spoke broken Spanish and had no problems. Had the croquettes, meatballs, and Russian salad. All were very good.

Great croquettes which are their specialist dish. This is a lovely off the path authentic no frills venue. Great to stop by for a quick drink and a snack. staff were friendly and very helpful.
We went to Casa Julio for the croquettes. For 8 euros you get a plate with 6 different kinds of croquettes. Very tasty and cheap, highly recommended!
Came here to try the croquetas since it is on many lists for having the best in the city. I ordered a half racion and ate all of them. They were good but for me personally a bit too much bechamel. If you order a half racion or bigger you can choose two or more types. I chose jamon and the mushrooms. The server was friendly and attentive. I didn’t try anything else. I came around 2:30 and it was empty but I can see it getting busy at other times.
Food was okay, bit salty, BYOP (bring your own plates) because they didn't provide any. Waiter seemed moody but was generally helpful, suggesting that one portion of patatas bravas between 5 would be enough instead of two plates, and he was right, there was a good portion. Croquettes all seemed to taste the same, we had blue cheese, spinach and ham croquettes. It was decent for the price of the food, costing us roughly €5 each.
Cold and rude reception, when ordering, the guy at the counter gets angry because we don't understand Spanish and raises his voice! Unbelievable. They don't speak a word of English and get angry if y…
We intended to have drinks and something light to eat and read very good reviews. In fact no one there spoke English nor was willing to make the smallest effort to be hospitable to English speaking…
