Best italia food in nyc. Denis Is Just on another level
This place is awesome. We came in after marching in the St. Patrick’s day parade and they were so welcoming. They were welcoming to us but also to our first responders!!! We had lunch here and it was great. Everyone is so nice. Thank you.
Good front of house / maître d’ service
Excellent food and service. Owner/Chef Denis came out and greeted us during lunch. A great Italian restaurant. We will be back.
Quality home made pasta by owner/chef Denis. Indeed, one of the best pasta places in NYC. End with the homemade gelato. Also great service! So excited for this find!!
We unexpectedly dropped-in during our shop and nibble a-thon last Friday. The owners Hassan El Garrahy and Executive Chef Denis Franceschini worked their magic both in atmosphere and and delicious cuisine. Their teams were kind and made sure everyone felt welcome and attended to. This lovely place has all the elements of the Dolce Vita, so much so, it was hard for us to part ways..It's a must go no matter what time of day or night. Thank you to everyone at Bar Italia! See you again soon.
A boutique restaurant with awesome authentic Italian food made from fresh ingredients and was well priced. The service was impeccable and our host Hassan was friendly and shared some good stories. Definitely will be returning to this gem of a restaurant
We had a great family dinner here after a day at the Central Park Zoo. We literally walked in because someone was outdoor dining on the Seafood Tower and it was just what we wanted. This place has a mature vibe and is not ideal for all kids...but they had no pretense about us dining with a 7 year old and an 18 month old. They brought over crayons and made some kid-friendly pasta dishes for us. We enjoyed the seafood tower (lobster, shrimp, oysters, crab ceviche); calamari; and pasta. There were good options of wine my the glass. I'm posting so we remember it for next time we are in the area.
This might be my favorite Italian restaurant on the Upper East Side. I love coming on the weekends with my dog and fiance. The staff always treats you like royalty and they are so nice. I am proud to call this place one of my favorite places in NYC. Can't wait to come back every week.
I find that the best test you can give a restaurant to see if it is good or not, is to try their calamari (if it's on their menu). If they can execute that well, you are guaranteed to have the rest of your meal be prepared well too. Needless to say, Bar Italia passed with flying colors. Their staff was amazing too. Definitely recommend it if you are in the area.
Great food nice location with outdoor dining. The wine list is very reasonable and the service was excellent. We started with the beet salad and the asparagus antipasti. Then a spaghetti special and a Pappardelle with mushrooms. All was great. Passed on desert because we were full. In the summer when the front is open it can be a little loud due to street traffic but still very nice.
Fantastic food! Fantastic staff! Great location! I had the special Dover Sole, and it it was delicious! Lots of gluten free items on the menu, and the staff will do anything to make the customer happy! We will be there often when we are in town.
We had a great experience dining at this place. Chef Denis is amazing and we enjoyed his hospitality. He suggested a couple of dishes and all of them were exceptionally delicious. The staff were friendly and attentive. Thank You guys, keep it up!
Such a nice restaurant on Madison. I walked in thinking they had some connection with the one in London. They have really good seafood and very sweet staff. Open 11-10pm for food. Drinks until 11pm. A cozy escape from a day of shopping. I will check it out again soon.
One of the Best Places for Pasta in Manhattan If you’re looking for one of the best spots to enjoy pasta in Manhattan, this restaurant is an absolute gem. From the moment you walk in, the warm atmosphere and outstanding service make the experience truly memorable. The staff is friendly, attentive, and always ready to help you choose the perfect dish.
We discovered this spot by accident years ago, and we've returned each time we visit NYC. The food is great, and the people and service are wonderful.
A chic and sassy restaurant on Madison Avenue. Be sure to reserve a table for Sunday Brunch. A superb greet and meet up spot for the ladies who love to lunch after a full day of designer shopping on Madison Avenue. The bar has a wonderful selection of speciality cocktails and a superb wine list. I suggest a champagne cocktail and calamari for starters. I met my daughter and son in law for a pre Mother's Day dinner Friday night. The fusilli pesto dish was exquisite. The pasta carbonara was fabulous. The service and wait staff were extremely friendly. A class act. This is a must stop when visiting New York City
This is a must-visit! An absolutely incredible UES gem- best Italian my husband and I have eaten in the city. We’re kicking ourselves that we didn’t find Bar Italia sooner. Chef Denis is a true master of Italian cuisine—his dishes are a perfect mix of tradition and creativity. The ingredients are such high quality. Chef Denis is warm and inviting- you truly feel like he is making each and every dish for you. The space is cozy and in a great location. Service is excellent. Overall, highly recommend. Can’t wait to return.
Great food and drink, highly competent and experienced service, proper standards. Not the kind of place that will expect you to keep your used silverware between courses. We like coming here after chamber music recitals in the neighborhood.
Husband and I picked this spot after spending time in the park as a date night. Ordered a bottle of wine and a couple appetizers. The owner talked with us and he was a delight. The chef brought us the most delicous key lime cake I've ever had. The atmosphere was wonderful, food excellent, and inviting. Would dine again any day! It was Sunday around 4pm so it was slower, we were the only ones in restaurants for most of the time.
We got a beautiful private table for two; the food and drinks were spectacular. Our waiter was incredibly attentive, and all the staff went above and beyond. I even made a passing comment to my partner about it being too hot, and some of the staff must have heard me because within minutes, the temperature had dropped, and I was much more comfortable. The manager and staff set the bar for customer service. I couldn't recommend more, every dish was delicious.
The service was exceptional. With dividers between tables, it felt secure and safe giving the circumstances! The food was also amazing. I got Spaghetti Carbonara which was just the right portion and tasted great! My husband got the Penne Bolognese which he said needed a bit more flavor but it was okay, for the most part.
It's really a wonderful place the food is delicious. The environment is just wonderful
My family and I had a lovely late afternoon lunch here! The food was excellent. I had the agnolotti and the rest of the table had salads, and everyone commented on how much they enjoyed their food. Hunter was our server and was wonderful! The service was fantastic from every member of the staff, and we had a lovely conversation with who I think was the manager or owner. A lovely experience and we’ll absolutely return the next time we’re in town!
If I could give Bar Italia 6 stars on Google reviews, I would because this place is fantastic. From the service to the quality and taste of everything we tried, Bar Italia knocked it out of the park. Starting with the service, the entire staff was excellent - they offered to check our bags/coats when we arrived and were extremely friend and attentive throughout the evening without being overbearing, as an added bonus/nice touch, the owner/chef was also out interacting with guests on a few occasions. The food was exceptional. We tried several things - burrata caprese, a red wine/tomato sausage rigatoni, veal milanese, and the branzino, finished off with the key lime pie and mixed ice cream. Everything was excellent but I think my favorites were the pasta dish and the branzino. The ice cream is also made in-house and was so delicious. Bar Italia isn’t cheap but it is absolutely quality in every aspect and you get what you pay for here. Can’t wait to come back!
Following a stroll through Central Park Zoo, we planned to walk clear across the park to a coffee shop on the upper west side, but just when we though we experienced all the weather that the city had to offer, we felt a couple of raindrops as we began our trek into the park and fortunately we turned our butts right around up E 66th Street looking for cover and serendipitously found ourselves in one of our trip’s most memorable moments. Under an awning, escaping the downpour, the weather app told us we had at least another hour of rain ahead, so we knew we needed to tuck in somewhere. At the end of the street, beautiful window displays and designer corner flagships spilled out of repurposed late-19th-century limestone mansions - Madison Avenue. You don’t have to be a local to know that ducking in for cover around here, especially near dinner time, doesn’t exactly scream affordable or accessible. Still, everything seemed to pull us toward the warm, dry red awning across the street. Bar Italia’s white tablecloths, extra-long stone bar, and fresh arrangements of flowers created an elegance that made us quietly wonder if we were in over our heads - especially rolling in with a stroller. Those concerns faded almost instantly thanks to the big, beaming smile and perfectly tailored suit of Hassan El Garrahy, who greeted us by high-fiving our son and rearranging tables to make space. As our son giggled and goofed around, Hassan shared how he’d come over from Egypt all those years ago, had us guess his age - an impressive 68, fueled by good eating, marathon running, and chasing his four kids - and encouraged us, with a grin, to have a few more of our own. That same spirit and energy from Bar Italia’s owner and operating partner carries through every detail that makes the place special: the rain tapping softly against the accordion windows that open wide on warmer afternoons; the attentive server who brought calamari with homemade tartar sauce and thoughtfully split our single order of what may be the best spaghetti carbonara we’ve ever had - more than enough for both of us. By the time the rain cleared and the air cooled, we stepped back onto Madison Avenue full, grateful, and newly aware that the city still has a way of surprising you with its quiet treasures.
The food was excellent. Definitely some of the best Italian food I have eaten in NYC. Excellent wine and cocktails, with attentive and knowledgeable service. Will be back.
A charming little restaurant! The pasta was exquisite : perfectly cooked, rich in flavor and deeply comforting. A huge favorite at the table: the bolognese and the carbonara, both outstanding and beautifully executed.
Have come here many times over the years - always a treat! My favorite spot in the area and one of my favorites in NYC. They treat you like family - incredible hospitality, incredible and fresh food, and a fantastic, extensive wine selection. The real deal. They're super accommodating about allergies and dietary restrictions, as well. Last night we came in for dinner with friends after eloping and everything was perfect. I couldn't ask for a better night out! I wish I wasn't terrible with names so I could give our server the proper shout out he deserves. Thank you!
We had an incredible experience at Bar Italiana! The food was a 10 out of 10 — fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. Our waiter, Hanna, was absolutely amazing — friendly, attentive, and made sure everything was perfect from start to finish. The service truly elevated the whole dining experience. Highly recommend and can’t wait to come back!
Absolutely Loved This Spot! Just walking by, you can’t help but notice how clean and inviting it looks inside. My friend and I asked to sit indoors—no problem at all. Right away, we were served bottled water and ordered two drinks called the “Verde.” You get to choose your base—vodka, gin, or tequila—and wow, the drinks were amazing. The food menu? You could close your eyes and pick anything and still end up with a great dish. The pizza is light, clean, and feels organic—super flavorful but not heavy or bloating. Our host, John, was incredibly informative and even told us about some off-menu specials personally prepared by the chef, Dennis. Huge bonus! The service was on point—no dirty plates sitting around, clean utensils, and an overall great vibe. We came during a bright summer day, and the place had such a lively, vibrant energy. Whether you’re in the mood to share or go all in solo, you won’t regret stopping here. Definitely a must-visit!
Had such a great experience at Bar Italia on Madison! I stopped in for a cocktail and was served by Karen, who was absolutely fantastic—warm, attentive, and genuinely made the visit special. She recommended the cucumber martini, which was crisp, refreshing, and perfectly crafted. I also had the Sardinian bread, and it was flavorful and beautifully presented. The atmosphere is chic yet inviting, and the service truly stands out. Can’t wait to return!
I had an amazing experience at Bar Italia. The ambiance was cozy and inviting, and the staff were friendly and attentive. The food was outstanding, with each dish packed with flavor and beautifully presented. A special shout-out to Baccalà mantecato, three days of preparation for a true masterpiece of flavor! Highly recommend this spot for anyone looking for delicious food and excellent service. I’ll definitely be back!
This was hands down one of the best dining experiences I’ve ever had. From the vibrant salad to the perfectly tender short rib, every dish was absolutely delicious. The Baccala Mantecato, a first for me, was incredible — you can really taste the care that goes into its three-day preparation. The presentation was flawless, and every detail made the meal unforgettable. I can't wait to come back! A huge thanks goes to the Chef and all the staff.
Came here for a quick afternoon bite after a stroll in the park, sat outside. We asked our server to split the salad and pasta as we were not very hungry, and it was done with pleasure (some places don't hide the disappointment when you don't order a whole meal). Food came out very tasty, and flavorful. Overall the service was exceptional and we also were greeted by the manager who was checking with every table if everything was alright. I haven't seen the decor and didn't go inside the restaurant, but the outdoors were very well maintained. The prices are a bit high in my opinion, but other than that everything else was great!
Wow what a place to enjoy a great meal. Overall the experience was great from the food to the service. We had lentil soup, pasta Bolognese, pasta derade, chicken of the day and the white truffle pasta as it was in season. All of the food was delicious. The drinks were fantastic and the service was outstanding from the waiter to the managers, to the chef. Best service I've had in awhile it was really on point. Someone dropped a piece of silverware and 3-4 staff heard it and looked, and then they scooped it up within seconds they are really on top of the service. We never felt rushed even though they were packed, we felt very welcome.
The food is not seasoned enough or appropriately for my taste, but the quality of ingredients is high and the freshness is readily apparent. I had carpaccio, crab salad, and pasta pesto, and they were all good, but not good enough to justify the premium prices. The service, on the other hand, is impeccable- attentive, polite, and conscientious without being overbearing. A wonderful experience.
6 months ago, we had pasta and gnocchi at Bar Italia. It was the only place that was open during COVID. I think it was 48$ each. Certainly the most expensive pasta in my life. But funny enough, my daughter and I still talk about the excellent food, and that says it all. Today, we just ate around the corner in a family style Italian restaurant (28$ for a pasta) and it was remarkably unremarkable food. So , go to Bar Italia and spend the money and enjoy it.
Me and my wife were out on a shopping spree for lunch. we stopped over at Bar Italia didn't take many pictures, and now I feel sorry about it as the restaurant was small but very beautifully done. The owner was at the restaurant going to each and every table, taking feedback from customers that was very nice 👍. Food quality was excellent. We wanted to keep it light, so we ordered only one crab salad and a chicken dish both were exceptionally good 👍
So, we dropped some serious cash expecting a great time, but boy, did things take a nosedive thanks to the clueless hostess. Don't even get me started - major "liar, liar, pants on fire" situation here. Alright, let's break it down: the food and service were pretty solid. Tons of yummy options on the menu and the staff was on point. Props to the waitstaff for being all ears and helpful. But here's where it went south. There's this empty outdoor table, and guess what? The hostess conveniently forgot about the promise she made to seat us out there. Not cool, right? And the way she handled it? Ugh, major letdown vibes. And don't even get me started on the manager. He's just chilling there, witnessing the whole debacle, but not a word from him. So much for customer service, huh? Oh, and heads up: if you're thinking of chilling indoors, be ready for an eardrum assault. The noise levels are off the charts, and I ended up with a pounding headache. Bottom line? Our wallet took a hit, all thanks to Miss Hostess with the Mostest Attitude. Some parts of the experience were cool, but the unresolved issues and the manager's MIA act left us seriously unimpressed.
Aggressively average (American) Italian. If you’re in the area… still a last resort. Paper placed on top of linen tablecloth is a little tacky. Even Olive Garden can grate fresh cheese at the table, don’t know why a guy came out with a bucket of pre grated cheese. Food was good, nothing mind blowing. For as much as I paid for carbonara, could’ve used guanciale or even pancetta, but it did say it was going to be bacon on the menu.
Service was excellent. Everyone was very welcoming and kind. The food was not that great. We ordered the pizza, a burger, and pasta. For the price you pay you would think the quality of food would be better.
The table are small an cosy, the place has a great atmosphere, a little nosy with great great service. I can not recommend the fish or pasta , but the quality of the appetizer was great. Oh and i think it's more expansive then Nello...
Had a very mediocre dinner with friends last weekend. Frozen pizza from the supermarket would have been better. The tuna tartare was fishy even though it was doused in soy sauce. Service was subpar at best, the waiter kept forgetting the drink orders, he was extremely pushy with the specials which was quite unpleasant. Chicken paillard ( if you like the chicken dry like me) was good. Sorbets tasted artificial. Such a disappointment. calamary was fine, but if fried calamary is the most memorable dish you are in trouble... the shrimp risotto completely lacked flavor
I order a table inside they didn’t have it at the time, do after I told you that we are leaving, they “ found” the table! It became so noisy from before. I think this happens because they doubled the number of tables! I wanted to impress my friends visiting NYC. But they were overwhelmed by the attitude and the terrible noise.
Food was average, nothing special. Service was fine.
The food was mediocre, especially considering the price point. The service was slow and very disorganized. We were asked if we'd like water 4 times before it finally arrived. The drinks were great. The atmosphere inside and outside was nice.
First visit — cozy, classy space but a bit small and noisy when full. Starters (Indivia and Rape Rosé salads) were fresh and flavorful. Mains (pappardelle and salmon) were just okay. Tiramisu was excellent and the highlight. Service was decent but slowed down when it got busy. Food was a bit pricey for the quality. Nice to try once, but with better Italian options around, I’d only come back for drinks — we liked the wine and Aperol Spritz.
Cute Italian restaurant in the upper east side. Pastas were reasonably priced. I got the orcchiette which was the highlight of the meal. The onto disappointing item was the steak. We ordered a medium temperature but it came out nearly well done. It was tough to chew. The drinks - Il verde and the espresso martini were tasty. What made the place special was the cozy vibe. The service was great and everyone was very friendly. The chef even came out to ask how everything was.
Just left. Wanted a glass of wine and maybe an app. Very nice wait staff and responsive. However order Pinot Grigio and got the small amount of wine I have seen. I asked if it was a taste and they said no. Everyone else around me got a much more reasonable glass.
I haven't been to this restaurant in awhile but happened to be in the area so stopped in again --and I won't be returning. Although the staff were friendly enough and the hostess was vey accommodating since we didn't have a reservation, I find the food mediocre at best and very overpriced for the quality (or lack of). Zero stars for the chef who I understand would not accommodate my request for capers on my beef carpaccio. Remember the old adage the customer is king? Chef I'm the one eating it and I should have it the way I love it. Instead they would only bring the capers on the side. They also did not say that the oil would be truffle oil which totally changed the flavor. Again, nice setting with some outdoor tables and nice staff but an obnoxious chef and Italian food that is easily surpassed in many places in Manhattan.
Why is this restaurant still in the neighborhood? I will start by saying the front-of-house service was excellent. But the food left all four of us disappointed and still hungry. The “tonno” salad tasted like tunafish from a can with corn mixed in ($30). The bolognese pasta was mediocre. The branzino was fine but not extraordinary. At this price point, I would recommend the dependable Elio’s on 84th. Will never come back here again, despite the convenient location.
Service sucked! We looked for a gluten free option near our event Saturday night. The gluten free pasta wasn’t bad but it took FOREVER to get to each step of the way. To get a menu and then to get questions answered & to pick food etc Bigger problem is there were people - older fancier people that got better faster service. Ageism!
Super expensive. 52 dollars for plainly grilled fish with just a small portion of Broccoli rabi. The noise level is so high, it is impossible to have a conversation without raising your voice.
I came here to have a drink at 4pm and was told in no uncertain terms that I could only sit at the bar. The restaurant was half empty with 8 empty tables An old lady was denied a seat at a table Pretty poor. She left and went elsewhere .! I did receive lovely service from the barman who refilled my excellent homemade ice tea.
At first glance it seemed like a nice authentic Italian restaurant, however it was quite disappointing. Not to mention it was super expensive. The tables were unusually small, they tried to fit four of us on a 2 person table and we were constantly worried that something would fall off the edge. When we received our water, my mother found oil in hers and the waiter spilled the water multiple times. The bathroom resembled that of an airplanes but at least it was clean. The wait time for the food was not too bad however the food was a deal breaker. The pasta was extremely bland and unseasoned. It was not at all what I expected and I mean that in a bad way. The pizza was also very rubbery and difficult to eat but it tasted fine. When we were done with our food we asked for a dessert menu, and the waiter informed us that they were out of most of their desserts. We ended up getting 3 scoops of ice cream to share. The only flavors they had were banana, cherry, and pistachio. I hated all of them. The cherry was the only edible flavor. All in all, it was definitely not worth the prices and now i understand why it was the least crowded restaurant in the area.
Save your money, it is not worth spending here. Tried making reservations at 1:30 for about 7. Someone over the phone said they are not doing reservations to just walk in. Once our party of only three came we were greeted and told we needed to make a reservation they don’t take walk ins. I tried to calmly explain to the gentleman that we attempted to do that but he seriously didn’t want to hear it so he kept say that what I was told is impossible. As if I gained anything by lying. He then told me the wait would be about an hour. I told him I appreciate if he can fit us in and quicker since we tried making reservations. He seriously lost his lid and yelled at me. Telling me I was being loud and angry, he then turned around and walked away. Worst experience ever for some really mediocre food.
Pre-cooked food and reheated pasta in this Italian restaurant! It is appalling for NYC food quality that such place exists. Nothing is prepared on the spot and their microwaved food tastes disgusting, on a high price. Be aware that the below 4 and 5 stars reviews are just fake reviews . Read the lower reviews in order to see the difference.
Abhorrent food. Italian recipes are easy to make, what you need are good ingredients. This places lacks them. Exorbitant prices for meals that should be worth less than half what they are. The space, tables and chairs are tiny. The Italian atmosphere with Loren on the wall, old films and writing on the wall is immediately brought down by the 80’s pop rock that’s playing for some reason. Service is quick, professional, no complaints there, but the entitled valley girl infestation that MAKES FUN OF THE WAITERS WHEN THEY PRONOUNCE THE FOOD NAMES CORRECTLY leads to a single conclusion. Never go here.
Food is not worth the price. To be honest, it tastes like frozen food. Had gone to plenty of Italian places with my Italian friends so I think I have an idea of the standards of what Italian food should taste like. Overpriced and the interiors look outdated. Staffs are friendly but the food is just plain, basic and not even good.
Was seated for drinks at 5pm and forced out at 5:45. This while there was only one other table occupied. I would understand if anyone was going to seat there but it stayed empty until 6:30. I looked while I finished my drink standing at the bar. Each cocktail $19, not a $12 drink.
Literally mixing style food and with likely italien style service. The food are probably pre-prepared and you paid 40 bucks for small portion chickens.
The host was racist towards my pregnant wife and I. We, a group of Asians were told "No tables were available" for us despite being empty and with a ton of open spots available on online reservations. Do yourself a favor and go to Avena around the corner. That place was delicious and importantly did not discriminate.
If this were just about the food, I'd give the place 3/12 or 4 stars: tasty, fresh, if somewhat overpriced Italian fare. But here's what happened. As we were eating, a big 'ol roach skittered across the table, pausing in our oil dish before continuing on its death march. And it *was* a death march -- because while my friend pretty much jumped into the lap of her scowling next-door neighbor on the banquette, I grabbed the corner of the white tablecloth and squished the sucker. Fortunately, the restaurant is so loud you couldn't really hear our screams. Without missing a beat (was this a regular occurence, I wondered?) , the silent, grim waitstaff came over and moved all our stuff to the adjacent table , while changing the roachy tablecloth and quickly seating the next poor woman in our seats. (Incidentally, this is something that's always bothered me at this restaurant...the waitstaff seem kind of miserable.) And then...nothing. Nobody said a word. My friend , who is a regular here, was really annoyed. I wished she hadn't done what she did next, because I wanted to see what the restaurant would do on its own. She called over the manager. He joked, "Well, *he* didn't make a reservation" (Ha Ha HA). My friend asked how he planned to make it up to us...would he comp, well, something? He muttered, "Well, if it would make you happy". Uhhh, kinda! It's not like we spent 1000 dollars here. Considering we only ordered 2 salads, one drink and 2 cappucinos between us, it was a fairly modest bill, about $120.00. He took 20 percent off. You can decide for yourself whether grudgingly taking 20 percent off was an appropriate response. Now, roaches happen. It's NYC. But I've lived here 40-ish years, eaten in some fabulously skeevy places, and have never had a roach perp-walk through my food. Would I have gone back if the meal was comped and we'd had an apology to begin with? Yeah, I think so, because although I don't love this place, my friend does. Or did. But as it is...sheesh.
I used to love this place. Restaurant was empty. The assistant manager wouldn’t let us sit for a cappuccino at around 445 pm. Way too early for dinner anyway. And extremely rude. I don’t mind the fact that he didn’t let us sit. I do dislike his tone and hand gestures. Extremely ill-mannered. I will not be going there again.
was extremely disappointed with the Seafood Platter at this restaurant. One of the oysters was clearly not fresh — it had a very unpleasant smell and an even worse taste. Serving spoiled seafood is not only unacceptable but also dangerous. This experience completely ruined the meal. I categorically do not recommend this place and urge others to be cautious.
