WONDERFUL late breakfast on Saturday morning! This was our first time visiting Utopia Diner in Manhattan. We were greeted by The host, Omar with a warm and beautiful smile. We really felt welcomed. The menu is extensive and the portions are substantial. My husband and I could have shared one dish! The staff is OUTSTANDING. Everyone works together and our water glasses and coffee cups were always refilled. Watching other diners arrive, it seemed as though everyone knew someone. Grazie Mille everyone!
Great French toast, home fries, and bacon.
A wonderful diner! Friendly, comfortable, quiet. Excellent service and very good food. I eat here 2 or 3 times a year when I'm in the neighborhood and it's very consistent and reliable. It's a lovely place, low key, pleasant, relaxing, with very helpful staff and wait service. Re: a few recent negative reviews--sorry, I don't understand what these folks are talking about.
Quick place to grab a bite. I had a nice burger here with my friend. Priced right and served with generous portions. I couldn't finish my burger it was so massive. I would go here again for lunch or even dinner . Nice staff and cool space to people watch. Love a great diner.
Great dinner’s in the center of upper West side. Great service great food.
I always have an excellent experience here. The service is quick, the food is fresh, and the menu has a nice range for any diet. They even make allowances for alternatives because everything is made to order; unlike those chain restaurants who microwave prepackaged meals. Breakfast, lunch or dinner, Utopia Diner doesn't disappoint.
Had a delicious pancake breakfast here! If you’re in the mood for an old school diner feel, with attentive service and endless coffee this is the spot! Also yummy mints.
Lovely breakfast. the staff were wonderful and we were lucky enough to get chatting to a regular who told us some great stories about the area. Would recommend!
Dystopian Diner: There we were, in a place called Manhattan, when I thought to myself "I grow hungry and I am in need of sustenance". With hypothermia kicking in, I grew curious at the sight of a utopian paradise. I gathered myself together and made my way down Amsterdam Ave. I opened the door and was greeted with the familiar sights of a diner layout. We were promptly seated and our table was washed down with a sad soggy rag (in true diner fashion). We got a selection of seedless pickles immediately. IMMEDIATELY. I tell you this, because I love pickles very much (and it's worth noting!). Our cheeseburgers were delivered soon after, but they tasted horrendous. Specifically, they forgot to add salt, pepper, and/or love to the patty in the cooking process. I advise going to another diner, perhaps Jacob's Pickes at penn station. I really like pickles. REALLY.
One of the best diners I've ever been to. Very friendly staff that makes you feel like family rather than a customer. Today was my daughter's birthday and they sung happy birthday and gave her some cake.. Thank you guys and I'll definitely be back!!!
Amazing food, understand that it’s slightly pricier than people expect from a diner. With that being said, food is great and so are the people that work there. One of my top 3 places to go for a relaxed UWS breakfast
Family favorite is not cheap but a special treat. My Dad loved this place. We pay honor to his dear memory and make a pilgrimage every time we're in New York. Good coffee, great desserts, terrific waffles, wraps and egg dishes. Really cute and comforting decor too.
We were in Upper Westside and looking for a nice place to eat and this came up in our search so we thought about giving it a try, we are so glad we did! We love Asian food but haven’t come across places serving delicious. We couldn’t decide what to order and the staff is really helpful. They tell you about what they serve and what the best sellers and special Our selections were delicious and spicy!= Whenever we’re back in NYC we’ll be back!
Great place for breakfast, service was very fast. My juevos rancheros were excellent and my husband enjoyed the breakfast sausage.
Came here after the Thanksgiving Day Parade. The place was packed with people walking home from the parade, but the service was still first rate. They cleaned the tables and got diners seated quickly. Our server in particular was very friendly and made a few moments to chat about Thanksgiving even though the place was crazy busy. The food was perfect diner fare, delicious and satisfying. We will be back.
Loved it! The food was very good, and it didn’t take too long to make. The staff was very kind, and even gave us candy for free after we payed. If I am ever in the area again, I’d love to come back. Just so everyone knows, they make the tip a part of the bill which you pay at the front.
Was seated promptly and quickly was able to order my beverages (they have morning cocktails available, I had a nice screwdriver). Ordered the Lox Benedict with a side of steamed broccoli. It was delicious and a generous portion. Nice people watching from the booths facing the street. Will come back again.
I just had breakfast here. The food and experience were exactly what you hope for at a classic American diner: 1. Great service. The servers were gracious and efficient. They checked back after I got my food to make sure it everything was ok. And one waiter noticed a little girl of 4 or 5 who was upset. He took several minutes (an eternity at a busy diner) to try to make her happy including letting her pour water from his pitcher. 2. Oustanding breakfast food. Pancakes had a great extra extra flavor I couldn't out my finger on-- maybe vanilla. But hot and fresh -- the main thing. And the poached eggs were just right. 3. Great atmosphere. I love diners. And this one has a classic design and old school charm. HIGHLY recommend.
The food is great. Their sandwiches were amazingly good. The staffs were all friendly and they were super nice to my 2 yo son. Would love to visit again if/when I’m in the neighborhood.
Great quiet little diner. Clean. Our party of 7 was able to be accommodated. Great food. We ordered bacon egg and cheese sandwich, pastrami sandwich, meatball sandwich, grilled cheese, regular and sweet potatoe fries. Friendly staff. Definitely will return.
Great menu. Nice environment. We came for breakfast and prices are fair and the food delicious. Thumbs up for the staff following (correct) mask rules and giving special attention to customers. Definitely a place to visit again. TIP: you can also order customized omelettes for breakfast. Just ask and they will do at perfection.
I came here today with my family for brunch, and we were all crying while having a hard conversation. Our waiter gently put down some extra napkins on our table. It was the sweetest and most attentive gesture. I didn’t get to thank him. It was such a beautiful act of empathy. Please let him know we appreciated his care!
Great vibes! DELICIOUS FOOD!!!!! I cannot stress enough how great the grilled cheese sandwich was!
Great and simple, both breakfasts and dinner was very good, fresh, not as expensive as the other places around. kids friendly. When you want to grab a bite and relax without tearing up the wallet. The whole family is happy. No photos we ate it all and fast (: very recommended
Came here for breakfast with my husband. We had bacon and eggs with coffee. The bacon was excellent. I haven’t had good quality bacon like that in a long time. They also give you a lot of it. The eggs are fresh and not poured from a carton. And the coffee was delicious! The servers made sure our cups were always full. The service was really great. Our servers Mo and Carlos were so nice and attentive. Made us feel very comfortable. And the owner, Mike was extremely nice also. I have to say it’s the best breakfast I have had on the upper west side. Also, the price was a normal diner price. Will definitely go back.
This place deserves higher reviews. I didn't go for a long time because of the reviews and that was dumb. I got the meatloaf. I know, interesting choice. And it was delicious!! The service was good. Not better or worse than anywhere else in NYC. I absolutely plan to come back!!
Feb 3 2026: Gabriel the server is always nice and how’s great hospitality Really good service, it helps that’s its been owned by the same hardworking Greek family. The chicken and rice with the matzoh ball soup was really good felt very homemade.
Nice diner, quick and friendly service. I had the chocolate chip pancakes, scrambled eggs with cheese and bacon.
Excellent service and big portions!! We enjoyed a few breakfasts here and Happy they serve breakfast all day too. Thanks
My husband and I love it here and come all the time. It's very classic NYC diner with your standard fare and you can find delicious pancakes and even better waffle fries.
Classic NYC diner. Great menu choices. The food value is phenominal. Highly recommend if your walking around and stopping in for a quick casual bite or if your looking for a spot to enjoy a traditional diner experience. Great service staff, your made to feel like a regualar even if its your first time here.
Looking for a diner and this hit the spot. Came in around 6 on a weekday and got sat right away. Prompt service and ordered French Toast with eggs and ham. Came out ulta fast and was delicious. The vibe as similar to any Diner, low profile and not loud. I'd go back to try other items as their menu looked good.
A classic diner with super friendly, un-rushed service, fresh coffee and tasty food. This is a family business, and one of the last in the area (a half dozen have closed down). This is not Michelin food, of course, but an authentic New York diner doing their best to survive in these difficult time. Cheeseburger was perfectly cooked, too!
We were a party of 7 adults & 4 kids. The service was good and the server was polite and friendly. Most of the food was good. French toast was so-so. All in all very nice place
I've been eating there half of my life. The service is good, and so is the food. As with most places, things have changed a bit since the pandemic. The menu is smaller, but there's still plenty to choose from.
Diners have a place in American history and most particularly, NYC ( thank you, Edward Hopper). Several of the diners last night were elderly locals, and I loved the fact that they were considered “regulars” and felt safe and comfortable there. You go to a diner for a quick, efficient meal, not ambiance. I ordered a club sandwich and it came to the table with freshly cut turkey breast off the bone, lots of crispy bacon, and great french fries. When my other half asked for bubble tea( Are. You. SERIOUS I said to myself), he then suggested an Arnold palmer( half lemonade, half iced tea), which they gladly supplied. Go here for large plates filled with decent food, which has a place in everyone’s life from time to time.
this place is great. large enough to accommodate people without forcing patrons to wait hours for a table and they do take reservations. food was wonderful, sweetbreads could have used a bit of dressing or something on the side but were great none the less. everything we had from the oxtail to shrimp heads to lamb chops all very nicely done. their cocktails are also quite well made. service was top notch. why not 5 stars? i'd give 4.5 if i could for sure 4.7 maybe even. food and drinks slightly just slightly pricey but not crazy. I'll definitely be back
Longtime UWS standard. Stay long enough and you're almost sure to meet a friend or neighbor there. Classic diner food, nice service. Lately, management has started applying surcharges for credit and debit cards, -- not a lot of money, but mildly annoying. Oh well. Food and service are still great.
I liked the food. It's was good. 2 of us sat at the sushi bar right at 5pm. It was a full house when we left. Granted, I pay half the price at a great place in San Francisco.
Had the Alaskan salmon. Food was great!the sweet potato fries reach out table cold so idk what that was about. The mashed potatoes were also good! The men's bathroom only has 1 stall so the line tends to be a while
I have been eating at that diner for most of my adult life. It was always a good source for classic diner eats, with fresh ingredients. Recently, there have been minor changes to their food prep when only one person is in the kitchen that take the service downa notch for me. However, it is generally a good spot.
I hit this place whenever I am on the upper west. Solid service, can get in and out pretty quick (if its not packed on a weekend). Place has been there forever, allot of regulars and locals eat there so you know its decent. Good burgers that are fresh and cooked right (charred). Not the cheapest place but I'd rather pay up and eat a good burger.
Decent breakfast and free coffee refills! Nice diner experience in NYC and it's in a very central location. My bagel sandwich wasn't too good, but that was my fault for not liking how the sausage tasted. The pancakes my friends ordered seemed tasty, though. And the service was good.
First off, the food is average diner fare (not bad in any sense) and you do get a large portion of it. That would be an automatic 3 star but an extra star for the atmosphere. The place is genuinely friendly. After eating there with my family, regular patrons came and went. Some of the staff even knowing their orders and taking their orders before they had a chance to sit. Overall, good experience, not a bad place to check out if you're in the area.
Good food. Friendly, attentive service. I’m not a New Yorker but when I visit I always look for a diner in the neighborhood. This was my first time staying on the UWS, and the Utopia made me feel at home.
Ok breakfast food. Omelets are average. French fries are very good (when cooked fresh), but the bacon showed up soggy (I take fries instead of home fries with my omelets). A bit pricey relative to the quality you get (an average omelet with a few fillings comes in around $15). They charge an additional surcharge for using a credit card. I get they are trying to pass on the fees but none of their competition does this. Overall, go here only if you really want standard diner fare and don't want to go to one of the other UWS diners because of the distance.
Huge portions, cozy and classic diner feel. OK meal, not bad. Tried to charge me $10 extra on a $15 meal. They didn’t think twice There’s also a CC surcharge, so bring cash!
Good dinner. Food was pretty standard and felt kind of expensive for what we got. They charge for credit cards on top of it all. The rent here must merciless cause I couldn't figure the math of it otherwise. We will be back.
Overpriced. Went and spent like $45 for lunch. It was ok. Service was acceptable. Typical of most restaurants in the immediate area- overpriced and average food. People in this area will just shell out cash. Better cheaper options in the area are Pier 72 and Old John's.
This was my mother's favorite hangout. She liked it because the staff all knew her and greeted her. It's a diner, with a regular set of customers who eat most of their meals here. Mostly elderly. The food is okay, but the ambiance is nursing home.
What I found to be +: Good service in the morning. Food meets expectations when looking for a decent standard American breakfast. What I found to be -: What they sell as cheese cake is not what it should be. It has no biscuit base and is a sweet dense cream. The tip is sometimes billed straight off which is not the right thing to do. If customers don't pay it, it should be requested politely after checking satisfaction.
I've been eating here for 30 years. The food is not as good as it used to be, but not bad. The best waiters work during the day, now. They know how to take care of their customers. I think the place is going through a transition, but it will be on track again, very soon.
My wife and I like this diner, but there is nothing really amazing about it. It seems like a pretty typical NYC diner. That is not a bad thing. It just doesn't stand out as a place you would search out if you were not nearby. For us, the location is great for breakfast since we like to stay on the Upper West Side. It is near the 72nd St. subway station for the 1-2-3 lines. So it is a good place to fuel-up before a day of sightseeing. Typical breakfast fare: Eggs, bacon, sausage, toast, bagels, pancakes, etc. All that we have tried is good, but not great. The one thing that has been consistently great is the orange juice. Staff is friendly enough.
We wanted to have some dessert on a Sunday night and this diner was the only option available still open. The apple pie and the chocolate cake that my husband and I had were so bad!! Like the ones you buy pre-made at supermarket and you could taste all the artificial ingredients. But the staff was very friendly, good attitude and ambience. I would go back and try other diner typical food. :)
Our group was very hungry and decided to try this place despite the low rating. Super disappointed. I ordered the eggs Benedict and it was tasteless. There was no flavor to anything we had. The only thing with flavor was the bacon, it was salty. We ordered the lumberjack and there were no potatoes no toast and for the price it wasn’t worth it. I don’t like giving negative reviews but this place was really disappointing. The atmosphere is good, location is good and service was good but the food is tasteless.
I have eaten here several times over several years. The service has always been good. The atmosphere is very good. The food...good for the most part. However, if you like pickles with your burger.....I have never been served a pickle that I could eat. They are always old and stale.
This might be my favorite diner in the city. I've been here a few times and their operations are very consistent Incredible omelettes and French toast. 2023 update: not the same as it was 6 years ago. Came back for a NYC to revisit old haunts. Used to have great french toast and omelettes. Now? French toast wasn't soaked thru enough... Very bready with egg feeling--and had an odd salty taste. Omelet was bitter tasting. Latte was bitter. Sad to see such a fave of mine decline. Original review: Prices are fantastic for the city. Service is amazing. Constantly checking up on customers. Never get orders wrong. Their staff is incredibly pleasant. I'm constantly recommending this place to friends and they love it too. Highly recommend it.
Utopia has been in the neighborhood for as long as I can remember. A go to diner for many and a home away from home for some in the neighborhood. The food wasn’t bad, the prices are well aligned with what you can expect from the neighborhood and the service was great. Overall it’s fair to say Utopia is worth a try if you enjoy breakfast at anytime of the day !!!
Craving a basic diner experience. Ordered 2 over easy, bacon, potatoes, gluten free toast. Cold uninspiring potatoes and cold hard toast and $26 bill later with tip. What a complete let down. It’s just not that hard to do this right, especially at those prices. Maybe I was unlucky, lots of tables full at 9:00am on a Thursday. But I won’t be back.
Just ordered delivery second time they “forgot” to put sauce i asked for 2 time breakfast sandwich also not toasted! With all the people unemployed im sure they can find people to actually write down what you order. So basically a ripoff waste of good tip and guy on the phone just doesnt care. Bad management and the food is edible so thats why i even gave it at least one star
Listen, I’m a big diner guy. Saw this place had a counter that looked good, so walked right in. Turns out, kind of a dump. Also, they charge a credit card fee and didn’t let me know beforehand. That’s lame. Also, there’s no music or anything so it’s a little creepy in there. One more thing, the staff were yelling at each other, so that was weird.
The service was okay. Regular rude New York condescending attitude. My pancakes were burnt. They tasted awful! Also, I saw a roach when I reached down to get my bag. Only one but I was grossed out! Not coming back!!!
Too much grease and oil on the cheese topping the burger, on the cheese covering the Reuben, and in the fries. Greatly overpriced. Two attentive waiters - the only positive. Never going there again.
Experience was awful. Upon our entry one waiter "Jordan" was asked to seat us and he stood there glaring at us, each time my client asked him a question we got the evil eye, and he kept ignoring our request for a straw, the check etc. My client and I waited for 35 minutes before we received our order of two toasted bagel and coke. I won't be going back and wouldn't recommend it.
The staff was not very courteous, and the breakfast was horrible. Overpriced.
First time eating here. Cozy and friendly environment. Was disappointed with the food because the menu said chopped steak, but it was hamburger meat instead.
I’m sorry, but charging the “same price” for a short stack of pancakes that you charge for a full order is just greedy. And $26 for blueberry pancakes and some bacon at a diner takes prices to an absurd level. It’s a diner.
I came for dinner with my kids. The food was great, but when I asked for the check, they had added the tip without asking, then came up with additional fees, and card processing fee. When I tried to talk to the guy at the cashier (Gabriel) to understand the charges, he got upset and started raising his voice, saying “they’ve been in business for 30 years, and it is my fault if I don’t understand” that was just rude. I suggest you clarify these things before even ordering to avoid confusion.
Decent food, big portions and ok service. The prices have gone up significantly and they now have cash and card prices. I understand we are all dealing with higher costs but they might be pricing themselves out. I would have recommended smaller portions. One way around split order !
Servers very pleasant. Food OK. However: Not sure the servers are getting their tips at this place, as I overheard a discussion between the manager and a server . Then the manager said he would get his tip because he was a "good boy." They also charge a "fee" for using a credit card. I looked it up to make sure, and this is illegal in NY.
Utopia Diner NYC is the least satisfactory diner I've visited, with rude, impatient, and aggressive waiters, alongside high prices. It's best to avoid wasting time here unless you enjoy receiving poor service.
my boyfriend took me to this diner and he order steak with potatoes and I order fried calamari. They gave him a uncooked burger meat with no flavor, the mash potato was not completely mashed with no taste! My fried calamari only tasted like old oil. Everything was horrible. I don't recommend it to ANYBODY !
Pastrami they have is pretty much deli pastrami but they'll charge you around $15 for it. Let's not forget it's $5 for like a half cup of orange juice that's basically Tropicana and the card fee for just using card. Food is too basic for these prices. Skip it.
Horrible just horrible. Do not come here. First time and last time eating here. $12 for burnt toast, burnt home fries, sunny side up eggs and not so great tasting bacon. How do you mess up bacon and home fries? I don’t know. The bacon didn’t taste like much not at all. Most of the home fries were burnt and the portion was very small. I was better off going to McDonald’s I would have got fulled up at least. I throw most of the homes out it was so burnt.
We ordered through Uber and what happen was the following: 1. My sisters Tuna melt was left out of the bag so I called the Utopia directly and sure enough, it was left out of the bag. They offered to deliver it and I accepted but by the time it got to us it was cold and tasted weird according to my sister. 2. My husband asked for his burger to be well done and it was completely red in the middle. I had to cook it myself so that he can eat it and that also tasted weird. I tasted it myself and it did taste weird. 3. The waffle fries were soaked in oil and the regular fried were soggy. 4. "ALL" of the lettuce was wilted. It was not a pleasurable experience at all. I'm waiting for Uber to respond to my complaint.
Bad surprise when you get the check, charges 4% debit card fee over the menu price, there's only a small sticker on the counter that claims "4% cash discount". Very misleading, the owner tried to brush off my remark. Ok, I reported him to the NY state attorney and they'll be the judge....too bad for the friendly waiters that are the main asset of this average quality dinner.
Somehow my $15 omelette and small glass of orange juice turned into a $26 meal. Owner seemed gruff and grumpy, so I didn’t bother to question. And, the atmosphere is OUTDATED (not in a charming way) and good is mediocre.
Mediocre, food is just so terrible, I order the split pea soup, creamy but bland needed some flavor, it was just a plate of green foam, then I order a Burger with a baked potato instead of the regular fries, a baked potato is meant to stay whole so you can add flavor on top, but they just simply sliced it in half put burnt bacon and cover it with whole slices of cheese when I was expecting a hot whole potato with an incision in the middle with pieces of bacon and shredded cheese not like that, and the burger what an insult bland and cold served open I barely saw any juices dropping from the "middle rare" meat, the wait staff is fine they were on point on bringing everything on the table, their kitchen staff need serious training they pretty much plated their frustrations on what I ordered.
Ordered a burger deluxe - came out in about two minutes with a very strange "char/grill mark" taste, also strange that cheese was melted to bun? Waiters proceeded to look at me as I was eating, clear they were talking about me which was strange - no reason to come back. Cheaper diners in the area with far better quality food.
The food was pretty bad. They serve instant mashed potatoes, and the green beans were so sour I couldn't proceed. My son took one bite of his burger and couldn't eat the rest. I told our server, but he charged us anyway, and made a joke that maybe he didn't eat the burger because he filled up on bread. It was weird and awkward. The bathroom was filthy, and the check was completely illegible. I am very unhappy with this experience and definitely won't be back.
Utopia Diner? more like Dystopia Diner! - terrible milkshake (served in a plastic cup ; tasted watery) - Disappointing burger with Leningrad blockade portions of bacon - Matzo ball soup is two sad balls of starch floating in an onion puddle. It's just two balls and broth. - Tolerable fries
Came here despite the low ratings, craving a diner breakfast. Totally regretted it. I was given spoiled half & half with my iced coffee, which I drank before realizing. Upon smelling the half & half by itself, it clearly smelled spoiled. When I told the waiter and told him to smell it, he stared blankly at it and walked away. He came back with the small half & half pods, but didn’t apologize about the spoiled half & half I had originally been given, and just walked away. Me and my friend got 2 eggs any style with sausage. Everything tasted like nothing. The potatoes were especially bland. My sausage was also slightly pink on the inside, which may have been fine, but at that point I didn’t trust it. In short, Would not recommend this place at all.
