Pretty much the best Fried Chicken sandwich you can get anywhere. Their desserts are seasonal so you aren’t guaranteed to get the one you want, but if at all possible try to go when the Bread Pudding is in season; that’s their best dessert. If you're ever in the east bay, i highly recommend you check it out.
Bake sale Betty…… Mmmm Mmmmm DELICIOUS! this place gets packed and busy and the operation time is limited, so if you go there, it may have a long line, but they will get the orders in and out real quick. The chicken is tender and crispy, the slaw has a little spice since it has jalapeño’s in it but it’s a nice blend. If they have the strawberry short cake… GET IT!! ITS HELLLLLLLLLAAAAAA GOOD HAHAHA.
Oh my goodness, I had my marching orders here. I went to pick up several fried Chicken sandwiches for my daughter. This is one of her go-to spots whenever she comes to the Bay area. Also, I added a couple of molasses cookies and and oatmeal raisin cookie. That molasses cookie is worth going back for again and again!
Bakesale Betty was the first iconic place to serve gourmet fried chicken in the East Bay. Sandwiches come loaded with delicious slaw (no mayo), on a fantastic bun or in a salad. Secret menu: Fried tofu sandwich. Might be better than the chicken! Desserts to die for: Strawberry shortcake Strawberry rhubarb pie Apple pie Ginger cookies. Only open limited hours, no seating.
If you love shortbread cookies this is the spot. I recommended the chocolate chip walnut. For me I love their pies. Their crumbles are so damn delicious. Also you wouldn't expect it but they have salads and chicken sandwiches which are fantastic.
If you haven’t been to Bakesale Betty, you’re missing out on something truly special. I ordered the apple rhubarb crumble pie and the strawberry shortcake, and both were absolutely phenomenal. What stood out most was the balance — not overly sweet, but rich in flavor and incredibly fresh. The crumble topping on the pie had just the right crunch, and the filling was perfectly tart and comforting. As for the strawberry shortcake, it was hands-down the best I’ve ever had — light, fluffy, and full of real strawberry flavor without being sugary. I’ve had my fair share of desserts, but these two stand out as some of the best I’ve ever tasted. Highly recommend stopping by if you’re anywhere near Oakland!
The fried chicken sandwich here is one of the best things that you can eat in Oakland. The chicken itself is tender, large, really nice to bite into with the flavorful breading. The bread is also perfect, slightly crunchy on the outside and then when you press it onto the chicken it flattens just like it should, and it absorbs the sauce without getting soggy. My favorite part is the jalapeño slaw which is fresh, crunchy, spicy, perfectly acidic to balance the fat of the fried chicken. Really a masterpiece!
Bakesale Betty in Oakland is a must-visit for their iconic Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sandwich. The crispy chicken paired with tangy, flavorful slaw is unbeatable. Their pastries and pies are just as fresh and delicious. Add in the friendly staff, and you’ve got a spot that consistently delivers amazing food and great vibes.
I been here several times for the chicken sandwich or salad when "I'm watching" it 😅 . The slaw served with chicken is unique. Not cream based but some type of vinegar dressing. The desert menu is growing. This is what's left of my banana cream pie. It was light and fresh. Nice thick crust like graham crackers really supports the banana and custard. Banana wasn't too thick and had a nice chocolate shaving on top. Line outside moves quick.
Jeez it’s been years since I’ve dropped by here, I honestly had forgotten how good this place is. I love that the fried chicken sando is so minimal, that slaw does so much work. You’d think oh maybe this needs a sauce, maybe some pickles, perhaps a slice of tomato… But no. This thing rocks as is. Absolutely eat it with the hot sauce. Most people talk about the strawberry shortcake, but I’m here to tell you to get the pecan shortbread, it’s perfect.
My friend Faith was visiting from Maryland. I had asked her what and where she wanted to eat at while she was in town. She said, "Bakesale Betty"! (Oakland). Her first time trying this fried chicken sandwich w/slaw was 7 years ago. I was surprised that out of all the places she visited before, this was the spot she wanted to go back to! Bakesale makes many delicious baked goods which includes cookies, scones and pies. But, you are really here for one thing: Fried Chicken sandwich w/slaw. Crispy, juicy chicken w/touches of cayenne and pepper. Dare I say it's one of the best? I had one for lunch and I'm already thinking about wanting another one!
The Staff was fast and super friendly. I will be back. I lived in Hapeville for 3.5 years where Chick-fil-a began and ate there quite often. Bakesale Betty’s Chicken sandwich doesn’t taste anything like that but it’s good: fresh, crispy and flavorful. I asked for no slaw so I could taste the chicken all on its own. I’m getting the slaw next time, the sandwich definitely needs condiments. Waiting in line was worth the hype.
Review as of 2/23/24 -Caramel Banana Bread Pudding: out of this world good. One of the best bread puddings I have had. Not too sweet. 8.5/10 -Chocolate Chip Shortbread: not too sweet, a good sized cookie and a good shortbread crumble. 8/10 - Butter Pecan Shortbread: buttery Goodness, a great cookie! Not sweet and a nice sized cookie. 9/10 -Apple Pie: not to fond of apple pie to begin with but I didn’t use that as a guide. The pie is ok. Crust is good but filling is just ok. May be pairs better warm with some ice cream. 7/10
I would say maybe 4.2 to 4.3, because it truly is a fantastic signature sandwich and the size is respectable for being roughly a $10 sandwich, but the overall experience felt short of 4.5 or above. And it’s not even the wait time, because that’s actually kind of a part of the fun! Definitely builds of the experience, but just walking in, it just feels a little too simple and could use maybe a little more decor for some added ambiance. Unlike some of the more recent comments, I did not get any attitude from the associates, they were perfectly respectable. Thankfully you have a good amount of outdoor seating to enjoy the sandwich that you waited a decent amount of time for.
Chicken Sandwich was okay, but lacked seasoning. The slaw might be good on other sandwiches, but I don't think it paired well with the chicken patty. I got a chocolate chip cookie, and was very undwhelmed by it. It was extremely sweet, but lacked any of the real flavor of a chocolate chip cookie. The texture of it seemed a bit off as well.
Not the worst chicken sandwich I’ve tried, but definitely not the best. Entirely too much slaw in it and a ginormous piece of unseasoned chicken breast is left once the breading eventually slides off the meat. Disappointed after seeing such amazing reviews on Google and subsequently struggling to find parking on this very busy street. The choc chip shortbread cookie was very good, however. Great and friendly service too!
Did not live up to the hype at all. The fried chicken itself was good but not great. It was not crispy enough. And there was too much coleslaw in the sandwich and it just overpowers the sandwich. I removed some of it but that did not redeem it. There was no sauce in the sandwich and the it really needed it.They do give a packet of hot sauce along with the sandwich but that does not do justice to the chicken.
I always see a line at the place and wanted to check it out. I got the chicken sandwich and the bread pudding. I would not recommend if you are looking for flavorful food. The chicken sandwich has a lot of slaw in it and is the most tasteless chicken I have had in a while. The bread pudding wasn't tasty. The caramel drizzle was tasty. Maybe they added so much caramel to compensate for the taste. I should have read the reviews before going.
