*COVID-19 Review* Delicious food | Reasonable Cost | Well-sanitized Burma Superstar has yummy food, perfect Burmese taste, good spice (if you ask for spicy, that is). We ordered Mango salad and Chicken Kebat that has an amazing gravy. The staff was also great - he tossed the salad for us as well. The tables were being cleaned regularly and hand sanitizer was available outdoors. Well-maintained restrooms. It’s easier to find a table here than the one in SF. Will certainly be back to try more of their dishes!
Best food I’ve had in a really long time. 10/10 Anything with the coconut chicken curry is perfect.
I normally come here for dinner, but tried their lunch for the first time and loved it. Usually we would order family style and share lots of meals, but during lunch time they had a lunch menu that came with a smaller portion of entree and side which was perfect! The tea leaf salad and samusa soup was amaaaaazing. The tea leaf salad has lettuce and cabbage tossed in fermented tea leaf dressing and crunchy mix of nuts, tomatoes, and jalapenos. The samusa soup was very hearty with vegetarian samusa, falafel, and fried potato. It was literally a samusa soup that tasted just like a samusa. Highly recommend this vegetarian lunch option. Also, the chili lamb tossed in the wok with onion, rice wine, and thai basil was a lovely entree. It came with a side of ginger salad and coconut rice. You can request regular white rice if you prefer that over the coconut rice, but I thought the sweet coconut rice was perfect with the spicy chili lamb entree!
Great food as always, quick service. Lunch specials are available that include an entree and salad, none include the famous tea leaf salad unless you get it by itself but otherwise a great way to have a entree with salad! Price is more than other places for lunch but well worth the famous Burma Superstar! Not a long line this time but expect to wait typically and especially for dinner!
I’ve been here umpteen times. Finally got my neighbor and brother from another mother to join me for lunch. I asked him to try the tea leaf salad. He said no. I demanded he try it. He acquiesced. We got it without the fish sauce and shrimp because of my dietary constraints. He asked for fish sauce on the side. After his first bite, he was shocked at how good it is. As per his opinion, tea leaf salad is better without the sauce. Also got the sesame tofu and garlic noodles. Ultimately we learned the tofu (sweeter) goes really well with the salad and the noodles are delicious as a standalone item. We laughed thinking about how this place always has a line out the door. Due to overcast conditions, Bay Area folks stay indoors. The weather was perfect. No external heater required and the two of us had the outdoor seating area all to ourselves.
I definitely felt like a star at Burma Superstar. First of all shout out to the young brown skin man with braids working the front door and Torrey I think it was working the bar. I had called in a to go order. Torrey was friendly easy to understand and accurate with wait times. The young man at the door offered me a seat and water while waiting. I had salt n pepper calamari and salt n pepper chicken. The food was delicious and portions are generous. Definitely enough for 4 people. The calamari was cut perfectly in bite sized squares with a nice crisp on the batter. I like how the chicken was shredded before fried in bite sized pieces. Nice cozy restaurant with full bar and outside seating. I will definitely be back to explore the menu and cocktails.
Not exaggerating when I say this is my favorite and one of the best restaurants in the entire Bay Area. The menu has a number of unique and delicious plates: from lamb and beef options, to chicken and seafood, they have something for everyone and it never disappoints. My favorite things to order are the tea leaf salad, coconut rice, chili beef, walnut shrimp, and sesame chicken. I don’t drink alcohol so for the drinks, ginger lemonade, and mango lassi are my go to and occasionally the jackfruit sprite. If you’re in the Bay Area or just visiting, you have to try this place. Be sure to join the Yelp waitlist ahead of time if you can and don’t leave valuables in your car! There are a bunch of break-ins so be careful.
I have nothing but spectacular things to say about this place. My meal was one of the best I’ve had in a long time. First thing you will notice when you get to this restaurant is a welcoming smile from every employee along an unmatched example of perfect customer service. The calamari was prepared with perfection. The Garlic noodles had a perfect balance of spice, sauce, and zest. My personal favorite is the steak kebat, unfortunately I tore that up before I could snag a picture haha. The bartenders were lively and knowledgeable. They were attentive and friendly. You could tell they took their craft seriously. Kudos Burma Superstar.
Burma Superstar is s wonderful Burmese restaurant with a few locations in Oakland and San Francisco. They are also a kid friendly dining establishment! We were there with friends and their one year old baby and the staff was exceptionally empathetic! And their food was delicious!
Delicious food, lots of great vegetarian/vegan options. Some of our favorites are the shan noodles, wok broccoli, and sesame tofu. Our server tonight, Serak, was very nice and very accommodating for our young family.
Burma Superstar has been my table of choice for ten years, and in all that time I have never departed disappointed. I offer no startling revelation beyond what many have rightly spoken already. Instead, I commend the rarest of virtues. Consistency. What I first loved here remains what I find today, steady and sure across a decade. It is all but law that one begin with the tea leaf salad. It strikes now with the same force as it did upon my first encounter, and in truth, it has set the standard by which all others are judged. I have yet to find its equal anywhere in the United States. From there, wander freely among the curries. Thou canst not choose poorly, for they are all well made and deeply satisfying. My lone complaint rests with the outdoor seating. It lingers as a relic of the Covid days and offers little pleasure. In places where alfresco dining thrives, parts of Europe, New York, or Miami, the street, the crowd, and the air become part of the meal. Here, it does not. It feels added on rather than invited in. A word, then, to those in charge. Rethink this choice, for it does not serve the experience well. That said, the stars remain untouched. Five still stand, earned through years of excellence and care. Go, eat, and trust that you will be as well fed as I have been, time and time again.
Come hungry, the food is so good and quite filling! A number of people recommended this place to me, so I already had high hopes, and they were not dashed. For starters, the dip appetizer is really tasty, the dip itself comes with chicken, which was really unexpected. My favorite entree of all that we ordered was the lamb kebat, perfectly spicy and flavorful! My mango lassi was also quite delicious. The service was good, but I wish we had sat inside, it was so loud in the outdoor seating, it was hard to hear others in my party.
The standout dishes for me were the wok tossed chilli beef and the tea leaf salad. The fried calamaris were alright. One thing to note: the spice level is definitely hotter than expected. If you’re sensitive to heat, choose carefully and don’t hesitate to ask the servers for guidance—they’re friendly, knowledgeable, and more than willing to help steer you in the right direction. Prices are slightly on the pricey side, especially for a casual meal, but the quality of ingredients and the obvious care in preparation make it feel justified. Overall, it’s a fantastic spot for anyone looking to explore bold, beautifully crafted Burmese cuisine.
Great service, wonderful atmosphere, and fantastic dishes. After dining for a business lunch meeting, returned for dinner a few weeks later. Excellent quality, everything is fresh and well prepared. Kathy is amazing! Exceptional service, was lucky enough to see her both visits.
The Oakland location has lots of available parking on the street in close proximity to the restaurant, especially if you go at 11:30 for lunch. You will get a strong whiff of all those seasonings cooking as you approach, in my book this always means good food will follow. They have a nice area for outside seating, but be careful of the bike lane, make sure you look before you cross into the restaurant or you might walk right into a 10 speed! The staff was very accommodating to my cousin with a wheelchair, they easily moved seating to ensure she had adequate space and was comfortable. I didn’t need to taste the food after this display of kindness, I knew I was in good culinary hands! The bathrooms are clean with a hint of cleaning product in the air, they are also spacious and pleasant even though they are unisex because I am not a fan of sharing restrooms with men. So yes, it is safe to use the bathroom here! The decor of the space has a family friendly feeling, with artwork that reminds you a trip to Burma should be on your travel bucket list! The menu has several selections but it’s not overwhelming, and accommodates all preferred diets. Vegetarians, and vegans this is a haven for you, lots of fruits and vegetables in these dishes, so please don’t shy away! I like restaurants that take a break between lunch and dinner, they usually do an extra bit of cleaning in my opinion. They close for lunch at 2:30 and open for dinner at 5pm during the week. This place gets packed, so plan to go early, and they only take reservations for parties of 8 or more! The food is eye appealing, you can taste the dish before you have your first bite, I love a beautifully displayed plate! If you find yourself in Oakland, I highly recommend grabbing a meal at Burma Superstar, have the Tea Leaf Salad, Egg Curry With Okra, and Coconut Rice. Sip a hot Fresh Ginger Honey Tea, while you enjoy the loving energy and artwork that make the setting as unique as the food! Unnerved Traveler
From the moment I arrived, I could tell this was a special place. The smell of the food was inviting, and the waiter called us inside with a smile and happy greetings. The drinks (ginger lemonade and Thai ice tea) and appetizer ( platta and dip) had so many flavors. My girlfriend and I sat there trying to figure out how they could make this dish have so many great flavors on one plate. Then we moved on to coconut rice with pumpkin chicken stew. My taste buds went into overdrive, and I could not stop eating this meal until I was stuffed. It is such a pleasure to eat here in clean and attractive surroundings. I found the building's interior architecture interesting. The waiter came by several times to check on us and attend to our needs while offering suggestions and delivering our meals timely and hot. I'll be back here as soon as I can.
Really enjoyed this spot! We tried the tea leaf salad, nan gyi dok, mango chicken, and the spicy crispy chicken. Everything was solid, but the mango chicken was definitely the best: sweet, tangy, and full of flavor. If I had to pick anything, it would be the Mango chicken with the coconut rice! We sat inside, but they’ve got a nice outdoor seating area too if the weather’s good. great place to try Burmese food if you’re in the area.
Excellent lunch special. Coconut chicken noodle soup. Large portion. Lot of complexity to the dish
I’ve been here twice. Every single time, the food hits the spot. The first time, we had to wait almost 35 min in line because it was crowded. It was before the pandemic and before they had the space outside. My most recent visit was very easy in comparison. We got seated right away but outside, which wasn’t a big deal. They had some heaters which made the temperature pleasant and manageable. The cocktails were on point and complimented the flavors of the dishes well. Can’t really complain too much, will definitely come back.
Came here back in June, and this was my first time trying Burmese food. We wanted to order a bit of everything so we ordered the Ban Gyi Dok, chili lamb, the catfish curry, coconut rice and a milk tea. For two people, our order came out to a total of $102, with tip, which is a bit pricey but we had leftovers so that made me feel better :0) Burmese flavor is not one that I am used to, but it was quite delicious. Our waiter was super attentive and The location was perfect to hang out and have conversation. I’ll absolutely come back to explore more items.
Really flavourful food and quick service. Lots of vegan options! The portions are quite large: I would suggest ordering a variety of plates to share. The soup was the standout of the night for me - so many flavours. The coconut rice is also very good and satisfyingly sweet which works with the curry! Go early because there is usually a queue! There is outdoor sitting with heat lamps.
Love Burma Superstar!!! The food can take a while to come out because it gets very busy and they make the food fresh, the portion sizes are great and the food has a lot of flavor. I tend to get a lot of lamb dishes but also like the spicy chicken noodles, coconut rice, the Tea salad is delicious! You won’t regret eating here. One thing I wish they didn’t change is the Vegetarian Samosa’s , old style was better but new style is okay.

Lives up to the hype! I really enjoyed my platha and spicy noodles, and I'll definitely be back soon to try the mohinga.

Had great service at the bar. The tea salad is as good as the raving reviews say it is. All of the food was good.
Food was great, but what really stood out was when we realized there were peanuts in the tea salad and we had peanut allergy, Amy our waitress made us a new bowl of salad without us asking, definitely top notch service! Would definitely come back!

My friend made a reservation for outside on a cold Monday evening in December. Thankfully, the staff were able to find us a spot at the bar where it was much warmer. The bartender and our server were both delightful and took great care of us. They gave us great recommendations. We got the tea leaf salad - a must at any Burmese restaurant - and this one did not disappoint! We also ordered the chicken curry plus green beans and the mango chicken. I preferred the curry. All of the drinks sounded delicious, but neither of us drinks alcohol. Instead, my friend had a really nice hot ginger tea.
Amazing menu, delicious drinks including non-alcoholic cocktails! The food was delicious and a great introduction for me to Burmese food! Definitely want to come again. I came on a Monday for lunch and easily got a table, though the restaurant is relatively small and quickly filled up. I only tried lunch specials, one of which was a creamy catfish soup. I've never had anything like it yet I found it comforting and familiar. Would recommend if you like chowders.
Wow! Each dish has so many layer of flavors. I had the somusas, the spicy tofu, and coconut rice, and tried the chicken mango salad. The spicy tofu I requested mild and it was superb. The aromas and flavors were incredible. Will come again. Thank you Kathy for your suggestions.
In town for a work trip. Burma Superstar was highly recommended by a couple chef friends. It was AWESOME! We had a group of nine so we ordered family style. Tea leaf salad is a great starter. Curry noodle soup was so good, we ordered a second one. Spicy green beans and the eggplant dish were both amazing. Definitely make sure to get an order of the pork belly entree. Well done Burma Superstar!!

Amazing food, unfortunately slightly understaffed. They placed us at a table next to the bar, but somehow waiters didn't see us or kept forgetting things we ordered. We actually went here for their tea leaf salad but they ran out - considering it's one of their most popular items they could totally disclaim it, especially in their online menu.
Favorites: tea leaf salad, dry fried green beans, samusa soup. Got the sesame tofu, but would not get it again. Too much breading for that size of tofu bite. It was all crunch no soft chew. Also too sweet for me.
This was recommended to us by a friend who loves in Berkeley. We were a part of 4 and We were told to wait 45-60 minutes to get a table after we drove 40 minutes from San Francisco to get there! It was very disappointing and we didn’t feel like exploring other restaurants after we arrived. We decided to wait. One table was reserved but the party didn’t show up. The table stayed available and they wouldn’t accept to give it to us. We were slightly lucky because they were able to seat us after 25 minutes of waiting. Most people who came with us left and didn’t want to wait that long. I should say that the busboy was very helpful and attentive and we appreciated his effort to find a table for us sooner than anticipated. We ordered two appetizers: the sesame tofu and the samosas. Both were very delicious. The tofu was surprisingly amazingly tasty. There was a sweet, sour, and slightly spicy favored. A winner indeed. I ordered the eggplant veggie dish which was very good but more oily than I would’ve liked. Other dishes we ordered were walnut shrimp, which was a sweet dish… not for me! The lamb dish was good and you can taste the meat, which means the spices weren’t overpowering. Yes I would go again and try other dishes. It was good overall
Always solid. Pure flavor-tea leaf salad-so clean and crunchy, surprising and delicious. Coconut rice-subtle sweetness that is an excellent compliment to spicy dishes-lamb or beef, tofu with green beans-forgot what the dish was called but it’s all yum yum gimme some. Cocktails are unique and well balanced. Fish-light and fried to perfection without being greasy.
Burma Superstar in SF always delivers. I tried lunch special at the Telegraph location today and food was ok, not great! Coconut rice was a bit too sweet and so with the mango salad that was with pork curry plate.
Hi. I'm a Burmese, and I grew up in the old country for 13 years. This is good food but 3... to 4 stars if we're being generous in rating for authenticity. What is up with that sauce on the fried tofu?? I know ethnic restaurants must change traditional foods to appeal to the wider market in the U.S. but it was just way off. I had no choice but to eat it because they poured that sauce right on the tofu pieces. No choice was even offered to have that sauce or not. I still have nightmares about it. I gave it 4 stars because the food in general was pretty good as a meal. As a vaguely Burmese meal. It would be more fitting to say "A hint of Burmese". Is it faithful to Burmese cuisine? No, it does not. Would the modified flavour profiles sell well in western market? Yes. Get that bag I guess? But if people who love this place get a chance to ever visit Burma if the country ever opens up again, they might be very confused ordering the same dishes in Burma and how different they really are to Burma Superstar presents them as Burmese food.
Offered both dining in or out. Would recommend a dining in option to avoid street noises from construction and or homelessness. Lunch menu prices range from $18-$25; portion sizes are on the smaller end. Their dishes are flavor somewhat similar to Thai foods, minus the hot spicy flavor. Spicy noodle dish and crunchy chicken are flavorful; rainbow salad is plain tasting with lots of cabbage rather than shredded papaya as a foundation. Fried rice dish is also tasteful!

The tea leaf salad is a must, but I was really disappointed by the garlic street noodles. The flavor was just not there- lacking any sort of zip or texture that this dish would’ve surely benefited from.
More like burma super over priced. It's crazy how 3 dishes cost almost $100. Osaka mart has their actual menu items, Togo, way cheaper.... and their fried chicken really. Really. Taste like chicken nuggets. I'm sure they're fresh, but hard pass

I don’t ever really post reviews but honestly felt compelled to. I’ve had good Burmese food before but this was not it, at least when we were there tonight. Horrifically overpriced for the portion sizes - it made dining out in Manhattan seem reasonable by comparison. In addition the curries were borderline flavorless, and they gave us sesame beef instead of chicken so we had to wait again. In hindsight I should’ve checked more thoroughly online with the menu prices and portions but 17 dollars for the paratha bread portion is frankly insulting. After working in restaurants for the past 5 years and after hearing about this place it’s hard to say anything other than I’m very let down, service was fine, but I came in hungry after traveling and was sorely disappointed. Going to eat something else now.
Genuinely confused by my meal and the reviews. My buddy and I ordered the chicken kebat and the soup with the catfish. Both were incredibly bland, which is surprising when the ingredients include stuff like turmeric, garlic, chili, mint, and tamarind. This would be an incredibly forgettable meal, if I hadn’t spent $70. Now I’m just sad I spent $70.
