What a wonderful experience!! We came in for lunch on a Friday assuming we’d have to wait a while for a table as we had a stroller. The gentleman at the front was so kind and quickly found us a table we could comfortably fit. The food took less than 10 minutes to arrive after we ordered (at peak lunch hour!) and our server was very genuine and friendly. Also ordered the chocolate banoffee pie, which was delicious! Highly recommend both for food and service.

One of our (almost weekly) go to places when we want a quick dinner, consistently good food and, friendly service. Definitely try the appetisers...get a couple to share. Update 8/24/22, we should probably delete the 'almost' in our original review...it is weekly😜 It's a great casual diner! Update, no change from our first review 💖

Fried pork belly sandwich (basically a banh mi) and a delicious fried chicken salad!

All time fave breakfast and lunch spot. Never had a bad meal. Everything is delicious. Everyone is always so nice and their Sunday music selection is on point.

This place is small but it packs a punch! We has to wait a bit because there are probably only 20-25 seats in the place but the owner got us a tap wine while we waited. We were seated at the bar which is basically a view of the chef doing his thing....really cool, calm collected chef that effortlessly made great dishes. We had an excellent salad and meatball dish. We would love to go back!

Southie is a great compliment to its nextdoor sister restaurant Wood Tavern. The food is fabulous just as you would expect, and the service fast, efficient, and friendly. No reservations but that's actually good. I've never had to wait more than a few minutes to get seated. Parking can be scarce but that's not their fault. I make a point of going there for lunch a few times a year.

I don’t usually leave reviews unless the place was terrible, but this place definitely deserves a rating. Pastrami Hash was delicious! Coffee was good taste wise, presentation was eh but I don’t really care for that! They looked really busy but took care of me very well! Will definitely come back!

Food is always excellent here. Fresh, quality ingredients, creative combinations. Lots of fusion in a modern way.

The service and tacos at Southie are excellent. The guys that work there go out of their way to make eating there a great experience. Since the pandemic eating out has been hit or miss. This was definitely a hit for all of us. Price was great. Can't wait to go back.

The lamb shoulder sandwich is back!! It’s the bomb. 😋 The other sandwiches are fine and the fried chicken salad is great too. But the lamb is seasonal so don’t miss it. The staff is friendly, the service is fast and we’ve never had a bad experience.

Literally cannot express just how great these guys are. The service is amazing. The food is fabulous!! Work in the neighborhood, and come up on our lunch break on a semi-regular basis. It’s one of the only places that we can count on for amazing FAST service. So so glad this place is still thriving!!!

Delicious, unpretentious. Mid-range price. The balls and polenta were very filling (for a small person lol)

I came here as a solo diner because there was a long wait at Wood Tavern next door. I think my experience here at Southie exceeded what it would’ve been at Wood. The staff was so kind. My food was delicious. Vibe was laid back but still professional. Can’t recommend dinner at Southie enough.

I have never gotten a meal that hasn’t made me want to come back. I love the breakfast burritos and the steak sandwhich. I’ve only gotten things to go, so I’m unsure how the environment inside it- but trust me, the food is undeniably tasty and I love it!!

If you're a breakfast burrito fan, Southie serves one of the best I've ever had—anywhere. I've eaten great burritos across the Bay and in L.A., and this one easily ranks at the top. It's perfectly constructed: ripe avocado, fluffy scrambled eggs, cheese, chorizo, and an onion-pasilla pepper relish, all wrapped in a warm, soft tortilla. The flavors are bold and balanced, and it’s finished with a smoky chipotle aioli that adds just the right amount of kick. One of the things I love most is that it doesn’t include potatoes—just pure flavor, no filler. I keep coming back for this burrito, and it never misses. If you're anywhere near College Ave, it’s more than worth the stop.

Part of the Wood Tavern family. If the wait is too long at wood tavern - don't skip out on southie. They might be known for their lunch sandwiches but they make a mean dinner too. Some of my go-tos in every season: mussels (you get a huge portion!), bacon/egg/frisbee salad, breakfast burrito (to die for), all the various crostinis, balls/polenta, Sunday brunch menu (everything on there). They have the warmest front of house (shout-out to Leo) and the most efficient kitchen staff - you'll see how well they operate when you are there, it's an open kitchen. Space is more condusive to smaller parties - so grab a best friend and go.

The ahi tuna salad and wild salmon were both delicious, and the service was perfect. It was my backup plan if Wood Tavern was too busy, but I think I like it better!

I enjoyed the Grilled Chicken & Romaine Lettuce Salad. It was quite large, and it filled me up for lunch. Service was great. A good lunch spot in Rockridge.

Ended up here because our first choice was booked. Glad we did. The manager was gracious and steered us away from ordering too much food. We started with Brussels and Mussels. Both were excellent and cravable. They brought extra grilled toast to soak up the broth from the mussels. That’s service. Nice selection of some reasonably priced glasses of wine that are food friendly. Meatballs are fine comfort food and recommend for the main. Do not sleep on this place.

It's a great place for a fantastic sandwich and more. The crab sandwich was the bomb. It had big chunks of crab 🦀 meat. They also serve it with the side of fresh potato chips.

I've lived in the neighborhood for 5 years and ate at Southie for the 1st time on 2/27. It is incredibly good and a good value. The service is fine dining standard where bottles are presented and napkins folded when a guest is away from the table. The food is prepared with a dedication to quality as well, oysters were shucked perfectly, dishes all were extremely flavorful and tastefully presented. I will definitely be back, it's the type of restaurant that you can stop in for a satisfying snack or a whole meal. Thank you Southie employees for the memorable experience.

Highly recommend! Stopped into southie this morning with my family on our way to a very stressful appointment for my son at Children’s Oakland Hospital. My wife and I ordered a breakfast burrito, fried egg sandwich and a cappuccino. The food was incredible!! The staff was SO WELCOMING AND FRIENDLY. Both my wife and I left with such a smile on our faces. It wasn’t just a good meal. The staff made it such an experience. Thank you Southie, you may not have known but service today truly changed our enire day. Until next time!!

Really nice staff, nice environment, and excellent food! The fennel crusted seared ahi sandwich was fantastic, as were the mushroom soup and the arugula and apples salad. The mint and chocolate ice cream sandwich was a perfect end to our meal. We had to wait a while but the staff were checking on us regularly and very nice. The decaf macchiato was surprisingly good, so good I ordered a second. I don't live nearby but a friend does so I hope to return from time to time. It's pretty loud in there, they're busy for good reason and there's no sound dampening. Worth it, though!

Don’t be fooled by the name southie. Not a southern place just a name. The sandwiches were devilish and it was packed on a Friday afternoon. The turkey and steak were great and the service was quick and kind. Huge portions. Highly recommend!

Found the carnitas and vegetable tacos excellent. The fish tacos were missing something but equally fresh ingredients. My kid had a breakfast sandwich, excellent also. They serve breakfast until 2 in the afternoon for all u night owls. Friendly service. Found the prices to be very reasonable. Not a large place so seating is a little limited.

When I think of a sandwich that has the ability to make my mouth water just thinking of it, few come to mind, but what the sandwiches they make at Southie is definitely one of them. I’ve had their Spicy Hog, steak with mushroom, a few Cubans, but the one that I always come back to is “The Balls” sandwich. First off, this sandwich is massive, so be sure that you come here on an empty stomach. These beef meatballs are seasoned to perfection and bursting with flavor. The balls are covered in their red sauce with provolone and Grana Padano, which gives it that nutty and salty flavor that pairs extremely well with the meatballs and baguette. All the juices and cheese just get soaked up to perfection. The baguette bread they use is supplied by La Farine, which is just a few meters away from each other. Just putting out there that La Farine is hands down one of the best bakeries in Oakland, so it makes sense that this sandwich would be so dang good. I’ll be honest that I’m not a big fan of the chips or those chips in general and could be fine with just the sandwich. If you are going to have any sandwich to eat here first, I would highly recommend you try “The Balls” because I promise you will be disappointed. I will always say that the dozen or so times I’ve been here, the staff are always so friendly, and the atmosphere is very down to earth. The price of their sandwiches is in the $20 range, but the quality and portion make it totally worth it.

Southie has the coziest local vibe—walking in feels like stepping up to your own kitchen counter. Super casual, we seated ourselves and soaked in the relaxed atmosphere. The menu is minimal, but don’t let that fool you. Everything on it is absolutely stellar. I ordered the poached eggs with bacon over a salad, and my husband went for the breakfast burrito. We consider ourselves breakfast burrito connoisseurs, and this one ranks among the best we’ve had. It skips the potatoes, which some will appreciate (though I do love a good California burrito loaded with fries). We shared bites of each other’s dishes and both were delicious. The vibe here is totally unpretentious, but the food tells a different story—it’s crafted with real care. And just like being at home, they had wine on tap, so I strolled over to the counter and treated myself to a glass. Highly recommend. Whether it’s a casual workday stop or a lazy weekend morning, I’d happily come back.

I honestly forgot how good this spot is for dinner. Known more for their sandwiches for lunch. Next to their big brother Wood Tavern, this a more causal dining experience. Quality is just as good. We got the tuna salsa, a pasta dish and sea bass entree. Everything was exceptional. Service and wine were as great.

its a really nice little place in a cool area. we got 4 things. 1) Breakfast burrito 2) Chicken sandwich 3) Bacon Sandwich 4) meatball sub Get the meatballs if you go here. They were the best thing we got, and it wasn't even close. The burrito and potatoes were under seasoned, but they have salt on the table so you can adjust it yourself. Both sandwiches were pretty good. The staff was great, parking is pretty easy which was a surprise.

Great food and friendly service make this our go to for Sunday brunch! Javi crushes the whole delicious menu. It’s so hard to choose. Best hash in town. Breakfast burrito is hard to beat. Sweet corn and chile oil soup was outstanding last week. I’ve been getting the shrimp poboy of late but If his enchiladas are on the menu, grab’em!

Wow! I went in with high expectations after reading a few reviews and I was not disappointed. I went in specifically for the breakfast burrito and I was extra hungry. My first bite of burrito was all tortilla and for a split second I though “oh no”. But my next bite was like an explosion of savory delish. Most of the breakfast burritos I have had are a little on the plain side when it comes to flavor, but this burrito was like 💥💥💥. The pasilla peppers give it a nice heat and the sausage is delicious. Add the creamy avocado and egg and my mouth is watering just thinking about it! Go try it. You might see me there waiting for a breakfast burrito. Or maybe I will try the rest of their menu. The staff is friendly and the establishment is clean and colorful. Due to it’s location on College Ave. parking can be difficult to find, but it is definitely worth it.

Where should I start!!! From now on Southie will be my to-go place for breakfast… 1) Super reasonable price for exquisite food 👍 2) Their homemade pear jelly will blown away your palate 🤤 3) I loved the experience of sitting on the bar and watch the chef cooking all different plates. He is super talented!

We have been coming here a number of years. It’s been our fall back option when the bar is full next door at the Wood Tavern (same ownership). It is best described as upscale fast casual dining in a small intimate space where the noise level can be elevated at times. Menu changes frequently and is inventive. A bright spot in Rockridge for dining.

Located in Rockridge/North Oakland📍, this neighborhood gem 💎 won't disappoint. It is also the little sister of Wood Tavern, which is located next door. Before we get to the menu and the food, I need to mention how stylish this place is. Great spot for a mid-day lunch by yourself, with a date, or for a quick business meeting with a nice selection of beers on tap 🍺🍺 + a couple of wine options🍷🍷. You can sit at the bar, which gives you a high end diner "experience" w/o the price, the wall area is perfect for a solo lunch, or at the bar to ceiling window which opens directly to the street. Sitting at the bar watching the orders being cooked reminded me of #WaffleHouse (those who know about WF will understand this next point), if WF had an A rating and ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ a high casual vibe, Southie would be it. Now to the food. You can rework anything on the menu to make it into your own remix or even make any of the sandwiches into salads. Either way if it's on the menu they'll make it your way. We got the Turkey panini and the fried chicken + romaine salad. Wow and and amazing can't even capture how good the food is here. The salad I got wasn't the salad I had pictured in my mind (pre-order), but I was more than satisfied with the flavor of the salad that arrived. The fried chicken was amazing, almost reminded me of catfish nuggets. The turkey panini was really good and comes on Acme bread, which I here is another Oakland must-have. Overall would highly recommend checking this place out. You won't be disappointed.

The food is delicious and the service is fantastic. It's a great spot for a yummy dinner for two. There are 6-9 tables total and as many bar seats. The dining area is very small, the walkways are very narrow and there is only one table that can sit more than two people comfortably. Not crowd, kid, or Madea friendly.... great for take-out tho!

What a find... Living in the bay arear, Oakland to be precise there is no shortage of eateries, brunch everyday and anyway... But its getting harder to find places that check all of the boxes and Southie's just rang my bell. My neighbor and I just left the mani and pedi famished and did a "breakfast near me" search and this place popped up. On a really bustling family dog friendly stretch in Rockridge area. Very Demure and Mindful Small menu, which is best for me and really friendly and oddly nice looking wait staff. Super Good, Super Fast, Very Cost Conscious in these here inflated days we are living in. ONLY CON: its a really small quaint place, so you can only take one of your besties at a time

The service was stellar. Haven't had such friendly and attentive service in quite awhile. The food was very good. We ordered Duck liver pate crostini and Roasted beet and goat cheese crostini. Seared ahi tuna salad, fried chicken cutlet, beef & pork meatballs, grana polenta and warm ginger cake with roasted pears, vanella-pear brandy anglaise to end a great meal.

The food was pretty tasty (Meatball sandwich and Ahi Tuna Sandwich). About $25 for two people to eat, before tax and tip. Fair price overall. The venue is pretty small, so don't be surprised if there's no space. Nothing special about the service (nothing good or bad in particular).

We love this place! We are regulars! However, we were disappointed today when we ordered 2 Gruner Veltliner wines ($11/glass) and after we finished our meal the waiter offered us 2 sauvignon blanc since he wasn’t able to fix the “on tap” Gruner dispenser. We said fine not realizing the replacements were $19/glass. At least he should have told us the price difference. We feel taken advantage of and probably won’t return right away…

It's a casual small local cafe with limited seating around the cafe and bar. Has good sandwiches but breakfast items are very limited despite it's brunch vibe! This is just based on our experience: Cafe latte was cold, we literally saw when made and took like 5 min to pick up and deliver. This just made the service very slow. Chau's are very uncomfortable more of high bar stool type to just accommodate small area and perhaps made customers leave ASAP! Again, fair under more of a bar type cafe! Food was just OK nothing to highlight but sandwiches looked delicious. Not sure if try this place again though. No kids friendly.

We usually love Southie but the last few times we've picked up our order the main hostess has been especially rude as soon as we walk in the door. On a street busy with restaurants, we will be taking our business elsewhere.

Beverages are good. The front staff are nice. Food is super slow for an airport. Sloppy wrapping on the sandwiches makes it very difficult to consume. I had to rewrap the sandwich. You are an airport eatery, the products should be catered toward travelers.

Good looking place, great service too, but I could not have been more disappointed by my food :/ I ordered a breakfast burrito after reading many reviews about how good this place is and especially how good the BB is… no idea what happened today (my first time ever), but I got a zero salt zero flavor too wet and sloppy cheeseless BB! Instead of being on a food high and feeling good about life on a Saturday afternoon thanks to a delicious meal, here I am hungry still and upset at my waste of $17. So I guess my review is: Probably good food? But only on some days…??

Terrible breakfast burritos where they cheat you on eggs, chorizo, but which contain so many poblano peppers and onions that they take over the flavor profile of the burrito. So wet from the veggies that there was a pool of liquid by the time I finished the burrito at the bottom of my plate. The burrito could be so much better, but they quite literally, water it down. Very nice gentleman at the counter. I'm surprised you guys are recommended so favorably on the internet for your burritos.
