1. The Gold Rush is their style of the Vietnamese iced coffee, so it was strong and delicious! 2. The spot has fun casual vibes with a spacious interior! 3. The staff was friendly and timely with my order! It was ready in less than 5 mins! Note: There is a restroom available for customers! Photo: Gold Rush

Hidden Gem! We got the Goldrush which is a Vietnamese coffee very flavorful different than other drinks we have tasted. The other is the contra blanc a very delightful treat and not over powering in flavor.

Spring is here, and so are the specialty drinks, and boy did contra not disappoint. My first time here, the outside to the cafe is very simple and kind of hard to miss. But once inside , it is very well furnished. There’s so much room to just sit down and enjoy your coffee and relax. There’s a vinyl records store and a pen shop located inside as well! There is kind of a perfumed scent , but I think it was the air fresheners they sell by the line/register I ordered the cocoa butter kisses (earl grey dark chocolate mocha) and I was blown away. The flavor was this chocolatey amazing explosion. This is one of those times the flavor takes over the coffee, but it’s definitely a good thing! It definitely had me wanting me another, can’t wait to visit this place again!

Contra Coffee is a fantastic spot located at the Orange Traffic Circle. Their coffee on tap is quick and delicious, and the spacious interior regularly hosts events, including small market pop-ups. I’m looking forward to returning for their themed coffee events, like the Lunar New Year and Valentine's specials. The friendly staff—Julia, Blue(i think i got her name right?), and Marvin—were especially quick to help with my drink orders. Don't expect hot coffee drinks as this is not that kind of place which is fine for me as i enjoy cold brews and tea.

Cried in the parking lot - twice! First time I cried because I couldn’t find parking. But I kept trying and finally found a spot. Second time I cried was when I left this coffee shop because I was so happy at finding such a good coffee!!! Serious wow! Coconut pandan Vietnamese-style iced coffee topped with puffed rice and toasted coconut. This is a dreamy coffee! I can’t wait to come back to try every coffee here!! ☕️ 🥥 Next time I won’t cry.

This place is cool! It has a record shop inside, good seating options that I imagine fill up quickly given its popularity. A hub for the community, some great artwork inside as well, and of course some great drinks on offer. They even offer flights to help you work through the wide selection they offer. Not the biggest range of food on offer, but that's not why you go here, it's the social and the drinks.

C
C K

Very cool, hip vibes. Looks like it should be in LA or a magazine. There are fun posters, lots of seating, & even vinyl record listening & buying area. All drink are "on tap." Tried The Best Friend, brown sugar matcha. Perfect blend. Young 20's crowd.

C

Great place to come and study while grabbing a tasty cup of coffee! Tons of options to choose from and plenty of seating areas. Parking on the street is a bit difficult so I would recommend the public parking areas. Music is always playing so if you are coming here to study I advice you to bring headphones unless you are okay with the music. Aside from that, enjoy a good cup of coffee upon arrival!

Really cool atmosphere with books to read. The environment is great and very casual. Love the decor inside and tables inside. The coffee flights were a great idea and has a very bar like theme to it. Great idea and will definitely be coming back. New favorite place. All the coffee and tea pours were delicious and you need to have flights to experience them all.

A great place for tea and coffee in a wonderful neighborhood. Fresh sandwiches! Fresh bakery ! Nice and friendly staff. Make sure you try Chocolate Chaud Royale and Paradis DE Carmel. They have outside seating as well. Inside vibe is fabulous, and you can bring your laptop to study and work. Prices are $$. Highly recommended.

Great find just off the orange circle. Way better then the coffee you can get close by. All coffee on tap and great stop on a hot day when your looking for a refreshing drink. I got the Gold Rush which was a Vietnamese style coffee which was just the right amount of sweetness and my son got a juice box which had hibiscus tea blend that he really enjoyed.

Z
Zerah Kawami

A great cozy coffee shop. I got the foxy Cleopatra which is thai tea and coffee together and it was the perfect consistency. I will admit it was a strange initial taste but quickly grew on me. All the drinks are served with oat milk so you don't have to worry about milk issues.

Great place. Cold brew on tap and they have tea as well. There's a variety of books to choose from to sit and read for a while. The music they play is great. I got the Gold Rush cold brew. It was delicious.

Fiorella Sassarini

Great coffee and great service! I recommend this place to all my friends. The foxy cleopatra is always a go to for us (Thai tea). The love birds taste like Boba! Their B.S. matcha latte is a new one I tried and it was delicious! Will definitely re-order. You really can't go wrong with anything on their menu, coffee or tea!

B

Contra is one of the best coffeeshops I've been to. The staff is just amazing and super friendly. I don't drink coffee so I go for the tea, and the tea is amazing. Princess Peach and Juice Box are my absolute favorite combination.

K

I’m so glad I found this coffee shop inside 1888 Center, a bookstore, gallery, and workshop space for the community. There’s free WiFi, so it’s great for people looking to get some work done. I needed a place to work remotely while on vacation. The staff was so nice — I asked about the buko pandan coffee and he immediately offered me a sample. I loved it, so I ordered it.

Super cute coffee shop in Old Town Orange owned by a Filipino American!! Get their flight so you can try several of their flavors! And check out their book selection!

Great spot for coffee. The decor is really nice. Good study tables. Various books for reading. I got the gold rush iced coffee. A Vietnamese style coffee. So delicious

Great variety of interesting flavors for both tea and coffee lovers. The coffee shop doubles as a bookstore with tables, couches, and free WiFi. There's a little something for everyone and the unique atmosphere and concept make Contra a must try.

One of my favorite coffee shops if I want an iced coffee. I've never tried the teas but my coworkers who don't drink coffee are hooked on the teas. Great place to study or meet a friend for coffee. The foxy Cleopatra is a must try if you enjoy Thai tea and I like getting is with extra coffee. So tasty 😋. I also got my husband the dirty horchata which is a great coffee as well!

j

Love Contra! I like the way that their drinks are on draft. My favorite is the Gold Rush. Also, the Flight is fun because you can try different types of coffees.

B
Brett Anderson

I got the dirty horchata and it woke me and my tastebuds up on this tiredest of daylight savings mornings.

J
Joanna Lim

Friendly cold brew bar with open study tables. Got the dirty horchata after sampling several drinks. Would happily return!

M
Matt Price

Only cold coffee and tea drinks poured from a cool tap system. A great place to study or work, often full of students with their noses in laptops.

N
Naomi Beutel

Visiting from out of state and have enjoyed trying out various coffee shops, and this place was one of my favorites! They specialize in iced drinks, not many hot options, but if that’s what you’re looking for, highly recommend! The coffee is smooth and their flavors are fun. My nephew tried their pineapple coconut drink without coffee and that was also very delicious. Worth a visit for sure!

Y
Yochimi

Great coffee and tea selection. The bookcase is also filled with nicely curated reads.

R

I was in the area checking out the Hillbert museum and came through the orange town square for lunch and a coffee afterward. Picked this spot among the many coffee options because of the high rating. It was stuffed with what I believe were either Chapman U students or local high schoolers, getting harder to tell the difference as I age. This is an all cold brew on draft place (also matches and non coffee cold drinks). No espresso drinks. My cold brew was very good with delicate flavors (had it black) the kids seemed to prefer the more sugary confections. Oh to be a student again! They also have a little stationary store in back.

V
Veronica Mullins Bowers

Absolutely lovely spot. Great vibe, bright and welcoming even on a gloomy day. Mixed seating options. Staff was pleasant and sweet. Menu was inventive and Asian inspired. Great range of choices. I had a Sakura matcha and it was delicious. Very fragrant floral, just enough sweetness to balance the matcha.

J
Jake Puzycki

Drinks were delicious and came out fast. We got the Ube Thai Tea and the Horchata. Both were delicious. Loved that everything was naturally dairy free. 10/10 would come back. One downside note: packed with college students on their laptop. We couldn't find a place to sit inside.

C
Caroline Benner

The drinks are Devine and they use all non dairy milks to cater to the non dairy market. All drinks are cold and I enjoyed the lychee tea which the barista recommended as per her favorite on the list. Plenty of seating and beautifully displayed with fun records, plaques, clothes, unique sayings and art. What a fun atmosphere for your favorite non traditional friends and family!

J
JRE

Many choices for flavor combinations. We ordered three drinks and they were very nice. Coffee was strong but had great clean flavor. Also had a matcha drink and a cactus cooler, both were nice. I appreciate the sign that reads "if your drink needs adjustments just ask". Inside is nice and spacious with friendly staff. Google maps however says the location is on the opposite side of the street, just an fyi.

M

I went in here, and the only drink I got was an ube drink for Halloween. I like their little stationery store around the corner. Even got two stationery supplies from that place.

J

Creative and unique coffee experience, we enjoyed our coffee flight and drinks..

L

WOW! That’s My Jam is quite literally my jam. Best iced matcha I’ve had in a long time. So smooth - no bitterness, and just a hint of sweetness. Not that overwhelmingly syrupy sweet stuff you get at other places. Cool space & art, too.

A

We had a great visit at Contra. Very laid back and welcoming atmosphere. Interesting drinks. I love the taster-sized drinks you can order in flights. It makes it easy to decide what you'll want to order next time - because, let's face it, you WILL be going back!

J
Jack Dawes

Love the aesthetic, both the tea and coffee are great, and it's nice that they reward you for sustainability! The employees are very friendly and the owners are great people! They have a rotating menu of specialty drinks that are all super good!

L
Luke L

Too bad they don't let you enter the store, because interior looks nice. Got the Vietnamese coffee and I asked it for the least sweetest option. The flavor profile is mostly caramel, mocha, coffee. It seems to be premade and the staff offered to dilute it with coffee if still too sweet -- which I thought was thoughtful. Employees seem very nice. There are few, free designated parking lots for this promenade, otherwise plenty of free residential parking spots available.

F
Farzad Izadi Kharazi

They always have a rotating tap of interesting coffees and teas. I'm not sure you can get hot coffee here, but the iced stuff is great. I love the wall of books, if you're bored of what you're doing you can grab one and read for a bit. They also support local artists by having their are for sale, which is cool.

A
Anthony Caldwell

Overall, good experience. Coffee is slightly pricey, but the service and atmosphere make up for it. Quality is high and love the oat milk only option. Definitely want to come back sometime.

m

Contra coffee is close to the Orange Public Library. It has lots of yummy iced coffee and tea flavors on tap. The book store has a nice atmosphere. Friendly staff. The coffee shop has tables where you can enjoy your coffee or study. It is a little off the beaten path. Look for this location it's worth it.

Y
Yvonne

A three minute walk from my boyfriend's house. I haven't tried their coffee yet but their teas are really good. Juice Box, Princess Peach and their thai tea is super good. I need to try the rest of their menu or whatever they have on tap. I definitely recommend this place.

s
sabrina Clausen

Great coffee and tea place with definite hipster vibes. You can get coffee flights and all kinds of delicious and unique coffee and tea concoctions. My only negative about this place is they only use oatmilk. So if you don't like oatmilk opt for one of their many teas.

J
Jon Fink

Was looking for a unique coffee spot while visiting friends in the area. I was quite surprised and fulfilled with what I came across. Coffee and tea on taps, with the option to mix the two. Some drinks I saw strolling by were quite eye catching and I'm sure delicious. Was there when a lot of college students were studying for finals. Which was refreshing as well. The book selection is good too. Classics, popular new books, and a random book you can buy at the register. It's wrapped so you can't see the cover, but has main themes written on the wrapping. Will be back when I visit the area and direct people here who are visiting.

Contra is such a special space. From coffee and tea, a mini book store, to meeting spaces. Contra never fails to meet expectations for taste and ingenuity. They have their regular flavors like horchata coffee (my favorite), but they also come out with new flavors too! The same goes for their teas. The space is always clean, and the staff is always friendly. Highly recommend!

M
Manny Richardson

My new favorite coffee place in Orange. The staff is great. I ordered the Hazelnut tini or something. It was delicious.

T
Tanya Saxena

Such a great coffee shop in old town. One whole wall is books and there is lots of seating with nice natural light from outside. I'm not a huge coffee drinker but they also had teas, we got the flight to try out different options :)

J
Justin M

Great friendly service! First time here. Sampled a few different combinations of their flavored cold brew. Will definitely be back to try more flavors.

M
Max Yeo

Nice vibe to do work in, LOTs of seats and tables. No outlets though, only one seat with an outlet. The chairs all lean back a lot by default. Only a few chairs have fixed backs that stay more upright. Parking is hard to come by.

C
Christine Gee

Contra is THE concept that needs to take flight. I so wish this was local for Mo and me. We had only planned to stop here to grab a drink on the way to the Angels game but it ended up being one of my favorite things from the whole trip! The staff here are so kind and give tips doing a mix of something but the coffee/tea is 5 stars all on it's own.

L
Lucia Casella

Delicious coffee. Really appreciated all the different options, they don’t have just the usual options. Also loved how they don’t load up the iced coffee with ice. Friend and I had the Gold Rush and Foxy Cleopatra and highly recommend!

I absolutely love the drinks here. Loyal patron since they were only in Farmers market and running the mobile tap van. 🩷

College coffee and tea shop! Drinks are good, service is always friendly. Too many students sometimes but it's next to a university.

R
Rudy Ornelas

Drinks will def be worth it! A good piece of history you can find on their walls. Try the horchata cafe. I like being caught of guard and this place def did it. This cup was about 20-30min old if you're wondering.

K
Kalyda Tokhi

I stopped by here on a whim after looking for a coffee shop in the area. The creative drinks on their menu caught my eye. I ordered the dirty horchata. Service was courteous and prompt. Although I enjoy sweet drinks, it was a little too sweet for me. The shop is pretty spacious compared to your average coffee shop. Parking can be a little tricky. There is a lot next to the shop but it requires payment (should be ok if you are just quickly picking something up).

K
Kay C

Amazing vibe. I got the stay woke coffee and it was sooo dark and nutty! I definitely got awaken with it.🤩 Very spacious for students and remote workers. But there isn't much outlets for charger :(

Amazing nitro brewed coffee drinks! Love the variety and flavours available (and you can sample them) as well as the atmosphere and shop itself! Brought my friends here and every single one of them loves this place - it's a must try!

K

A wonderful coffee and tea place! Such a unique concept and they were so helpful with any questions. Every thing look delicious! They have a flight option where you can try 4 different drinks. I love being able to support local businesses and I'll definitely be coming back! Make sure to check it out if you're in the area!

A
Anna Earl

Great coffee shop with a great atmosphere. Its typically full with people working away on their laptops, but since it's a large space, there's usually space for more. With lots of natural light, the space is bright and airy. The coffee in itself is some of the best cold brews you can get. Not only is the coffee great, but you can sample as many as you like until you find one you love. The staff is also extra friendly and super helpful in finding a coffee you love.

R
Rudy Luna

Truly my FAVORITE coffee shop at the moment. All drinks are on tap. Their Vietnamese Iced Coffee, and Dirty Horchata are like crack cocaine. Ambiance is so chill, and there’s plenty of books to purchase if you feel like reading.

L
Luke Mooney

Great artsy little coffee shop! Has a tiny little record and stationary store in the back! Creme brulee donut is amazing!

M

Awesome local spot for delicious creative drinks, long sits. Open space, book shelf, calming vibes, large windows looking out to the streets. Near by parking lot and street parking.

N
Nikki Lee

It's the perfect place to catch up with some friends. I got an ube thai tea with coffee (the worker's rec) and it's super unique! There were plenty of tables and chairs, but I didn't see many outlets. There's a cute stationary store in the back of the shop too.

T
Tori Quack

Menu is limited but the drinks & food they do have are great. The record & stationary stores inside are so cool.

L

My tea is the honeypot. My fiance has the green tea and it was better than mine. I really like how they make the tea almost one at a time and spend effort making it perfect. The store was quite crowded, because this is a very nice place. The wall is fun to look at with all the books. There was no indoor seating but I hope to come back and find a table next time on a less busy day.

J

This place that doesn't sell hot coffee. It is delicious because all the drinks are cool like beer.

Contra is a delightful neighborhood staple. It's not your average coffee shop, though. All of the drinks are iced and on tap, so if you want something hot or more traditional, you'll have to look elsewhere. But if you want a sweet treat, and a cozy, stylish place to sit and avail yourself of the Wi-Fi, this is the place to do it. The staff is phenomenal, too. I've been coming here so regularly now that one of the baristas sees me walk in and automatically makes my usual drink for me. It's a sweet touch that I really appreciate. My one gripe is that seating availability can be tricky, depending on the time of day or just the ebb and flow of the Chapman exam schedule. I've definitely gotten a seat right before a rush, though, so it all comes out in the wash. Just be prepared to sit on a bench or wander a bit if you're with another person (check out Resident Vinyl or M. Lovewell in the back while you wait!). I appreciate that nobody is in a hurry to kick you out (it's very European, in that regard), although I try to buy something every couple of hours if I'm really lingering. They also take cash, which I appreciate, although you might need exact change in the afternoon. Overall, Contra is fantastic. If you want something sweet and iced, and maybe a place to rest a bit and sit on your laptop, don't pass it by! P.S. Get the dirty horchata!

L
Laila Calucin

Contra Coffee in Orange is amazing! I got the coffee flight along with a matcha, and everything was so delicious—perfectly crafted and full of flavor. The vibes were great, and Chris was incredibly helpful and friendly, making the experience even better. You can tell they really care about quality and customer service. Definitely a must-visit spot if you’re in the area. I’ll for sure be coming back!

Probé The Best Friend, matcha con azúcar moreno.

J

I’m not the biggest fan of cold brew, and so I was pleasantly surprised at how good Contra’s dirty horchata cold brew was. I recommend it for sure, the sweetness of the horchata downplayed the strength of the cold brew. They also have serve as a mini art gallery/bookstore so it was an eccentric vibe.

S
Sara J

You can get flight of coffee and teas here, which are all really good! The only downside is parking is difficult.

M

Helpful staff, wonderful strawberry green tea, and a whole wall full of books that we could read from! I simply wish there was a tiny bit more seating available, but there were plenty of busy students preparing for their finals, so no worries!

It’s so nice in here when you can get a table and want to study. I’ve come here to do homework and getting a table can be tough so it’s always so busy. The drinks are amazing though!!

It was a nice place! Coffee was good, I was expecting it to be a bit sweeter. But its hella strong. Good for those who need caffeine for sure!!

S

Pretty cool ambiance here! A cafe/bookstore... Quite spacious. Lovebirds (coffee milk tea) was quite good albeit not overly creamy. However, the large costs $5 and only very slightly bigger than the regular. It actually seemed like a regular size at a normal coffee shop. Not to mention they put quite a bit of ice. Considering the not so accessible location and price, I don't see myself going here too often. 7 leaves costs less AND bigger... I get that contra drinks are "on tap" quality but it the price point doesn't seem worth it to me. I'd recommend people to try at least once though. Interesting flavors.

I wanted to unwind with my friends at your shop on Friday evening. We put an order for Mocha, frappe, and cakes. We were pleasantly surprised by how easily your staff delivered our order. The best thing about your shop is that you really understand your customers' preferences. Congratulations to each and every one of you! You have my highest recommendation!

B
Brian Brick

Very friendly staff. Small but nice atmosphere. Weekends are busy and can be a little noisy. The later in the day you arrive the more likely they are out of a special. There's a punch card for filling growlers.

H
Hilmi Ulas

So this is probably because I am a black coffee kind of guy, but most of their drinks are too sweet and/or are in general not working for me. I just get their Stay Woke and stay woke because it's pretty strong. Still, I have experimented with their matcha and other flavored drinks as well as pastries and I'd say it's not quite hitting the mark for the price. The service is pretty good but the outstanding part is the atmosphere. I love that they have a stationary sub-store in the store and a nice free library as well as good lit for sale in the store. A pretty busy - beehive-like - atmosphere to work in, if that's your thing.

K
Kevin Gaw

Amazing coffee shop for studying and just hanging out! The entire storefront is windows so there is great natural lighting and they have a decent book selection in store. The only downsides to this place are the very minimal seating as well as the lack of outlets near tables. Overall, one of my favorite coffee shops to study at with great tasting coffee! Rating: 8/10

This is not a specialty espresso coffee joint. It’s all about coffee and tea on tap. My wife loved her iced strawberry matcha a lot. The place was packed, so they’re doing something right. A bit overpriced for not pulling shots. There is a vinyl record shop and card shop in the back. The vibe is very hipster cool which gives this spot its unique charm. Service is just okay. It’s a neighborhood hot spot frequented by Chapman College students. Contra Coffee is definitely a beloved cult brand. Not my kind of coffee.

Interior is stuffy, didn’t smell too good, likely because it’s quite crowded? Ventilation could use some improvements. Otherwise, their offerings and interior decor has a hippie aesthetic. I personally didn’t enjoy their coffee, tried a classic tap coffee and an orange tonic espresso. The tap coffee has a foam on top at the beginning but the taste wasn’t anything too special, just a new concept. It’s quite bitter even the one we got was the lighter roasted one. Wished they had milk/cream available, they only had oat milk. Then orange tonic espresso I personally felt was just ok, the orange syrup tasted a bit artificial, but my friends liked it. Price are reasonable.

Only cold coffee and tea brews. No hot coffee or tea brews. Probably trying dirty horchata would be great. Items are named crazily. Trying new combinations are always nice. Place is crowded. Silent like a library. Please is hippie and there’s cool small book shelves. Good place for students to hang out to complete their assignments.

Ordered the almond milk latte and strawberry matcha latte; not great, overhyped, looks over taste. Strawberry matcha latte tasted like artificial strawberry milk with okay quality matcha, didn’t really get a matcha taste. Almond milk latte was beyond bitter and just almond tasting. Sick shop with stationary and album store in the back, cool place to study but the drinks not good.

Its a fun gimmick when everything at a coffeeshop is on tap, I imagine it makes the drinks pretty consistent. I didn't like my iced coffee on first sip, but it really grew on me. Tried my partner's caramel oat milk latte, it was a little much and she didn't seem to like it either. Also kind of funny to be telling people "stay woke" when serving their drink, which I'm just now understanding the double entendre as I write this. Get it? Because coffee?? GET IT???

I tried the Golden Rush. It was delicious. Only cold drinks available.

Rough. Bitter, tart, not smooth. Usually prefer specialty coffee, S/O espresso, or pour overs, but wanted to try this spot - definitely a spot to come and work remotely, or study, but if you know good coffee with multiple flavor profiles in it, choose elsewhere. Good for basic caffeine and a hang spot 👌

It's very nice inside. The decor is clearly intentional with art and literature well placed and accessible. There is lots of light and open space. It would be perfect to come in and hang out either reading, doing work, or other creative activities. However, there is not one single electrical outlet. I'm sure this is on purpose, perhaps to invite people to disconnect and interact more organically. However, this seems to be in direct contradiction with the open and clean ambiance that invites one to come in and spend some time with a book, browsing the web, or catching up on work. Would recommend for a quick drink, but would not recommend as a hangout place.

Worst chocolate croissant I’ve ever had in my life.

Good cold drink selection but no hot drinks/specialty coffees

The delicate balance of flavors was certainly appreciated. A touch more refinement could elevate the experience further. The ambiance held a certain charm, hinting at a rich history. Perhaps a revitalization would enhance its appeal. Prices seemed to reflect a premium, possibly exceeding the value offered.

I normally drink coffee with my mom but for some reason I wanted try this new place Contra, located in the circle of Orange. I’m wondering what they put in the coffee because I’ve never felt this bad before. I’ve been trembling to the point that I had to go to the ER! Another thing, they don’t make the coffee directly like a typical coffee shop. It’s already made. And no ingredients other than the the title and flavor is given to you.

M
Maria Velazquez

The drinks here are great!! What I hate is the terrible customer service! All the employees are so rude. They all give you the impression that they hate their job. Love the drinks, I just know everyone I go I am going to get helped by someone with a shitty attitude.

N
Nat H.

I cannot believe people give this place 5 starts. It is not good. The drinks are terrible. The vibes are cool sure but not worth having to suffer through a way too sweet drink or a completely flavorless one. Awful. I hope they do not open a second location in diamond bar. The staff is nice and everything but it's supposed to be a coffee shop and the drinks are not good.

V
Vince Briones

I still can’t believe I went to a coffee shop that doesn’t serve hot coffee. Isn’t that the bare minimum? When I asked about it, the front lady acted like I was the problem. Super rude for no reason. I paid for a drink and left without even wanting to take a sip. Not coming back—there are way better places that actually serve, you know, coffee. Also mid iced coffee.
