Never had West African food before but after hearing a great deal about this place, I was very curious to check it out a few weeks ago. Located inside The Hugh which is a really nice food court with ample seating both regular and almost auditorium style that is easy to get to right next to the E, F, and 6 stop on Lexington Ave and 53rd street, the court certainly impresses walking in and seeing a variety of food options. Teranaga's staff was nice as I made my order of their Yassa, Yassa Grilled Chicken Bowl at $17 and house made Ginger/Mint drink at $7. The drink was fine and refreshing but of course the bowl is the talk. Specifically, the Jollof rice cooked in tomato broth paired with the black eyed pea salad worked very well that I couldn't really get enough of it. The grilled chicken was cooked very well and nice portion for it. My one downside were the kelewele aka sweet plantains as they didn't stand out much at all as I thought they would. Still the side parts of the caramelized onion sauce and this green leafy side made finishing this bowl have this refreshing feeling to it that I didn't expect but enjoyed. All in all, I thought the overall order was solid and while a little more than other bowl spots, Teranga has a unique African taste to it that makes me curious to try out their other dishes and will be back for more. If you are looking for a break from the Digs or Sweetgreens of the world, definitely give Teranga a shot.

We ordered $300+ worth of catering, and the chefs were so accommodating, kind, and understanding when helping us combine it into fewer containers and bags for easier transport. Over 20+ people raved and loved the food - it was truly delicious and the variety was incredible. We will definitely be ordering from them again and highly recommend!

I got the Moroccan chicken, jollof rice, black eye peas stew, and kale salad. The black eyes peas stew was so flavorful and tasty that I had a bit of it with every bite (and therefore can't comment on how everything else tasted on its own). I was very, very happy with my lunch and would definitely like to eat here again.

The food here was absolutely delicious, even in the middle of a busy food court! The cashier seemed a little tired but still remained polite and pleasant, which I appreciated. Everything we ordered tasted great, and it’s a perfect spot for anyone looking for vegan, vegetarian, or gluten free options. Definitely worth trying!

Delicious food court meal; and had I been served this in a fine dining establishment I would also think it was really good. I had the spicy chicken with yellow rice because they were out of red rice, along with beans and mango kale salad.

Fantastic West African food spot nestled in a food hall with lots of places to sit. The food was absolutely incredible. Expect a bit of a kick, but the Chicken Suya with mango salad and sweet plantains is to die for. It’s also well priced! I got my bowl and a drink for like $20. The mint limeade is like a sweet twist okay those super juices with protein and fiber and all, but like actually delicious? Can’t wait to show more people this spot.

I got the grilled chicken with rice, plantains, and kale and mango salad. It was delicious — remarkably fresh and each item was expertly prepared. The chicken was super tender and flavorful (the pic doesn’t do it justice), the plantains were the best I’ve ever had, and the kale salad was so refreshing. The man working there was very kind, too. I highly recommend this place and wish I lived closer so I could get it regularly. I’m already craving it again. 🤤 The Hugh is also a nice place to eat. There’s a good amount of seating and a clean restroom.

Very tasty food I'm busy food court. Cashier was seemingly having a low energy day but still cordial... other than that, very good food. Great for vegan/vegetarian/gluten free eaters.

Teranga is a West African build-your-own-bowl style restaurant located inside The Hugh, a fancy food hall conveniently located in Midtown East. You can pick your base, main, sides, sauce and hot sauce. This was my first time trying West African or Senegalese food and it surpassed my expectation. There are 15 food vendors with a variety of world cuisines in The Hugh. The pricing is relatively affordable compared to other restaurants in Midtown area. The food hall is clean, spacious and comfy with restrooms. Perfect spot for having lunch with coworkers. *Chicken Mafe Bowl $17 We opted for a grilled chicken bowl with a savory peanut sauce (mafe). The sauce tasted like satay imo. The chicken was cooked to perfect tenderness. Imagine it was similar to satay chicken skewer with an African spin. The jollof rice on the bottom absorbed the rich and nutty flavors from the sauce. It was so flavorful that I couldn't stop but kept digging into the rice. They also put black eyed pea stew which served as a welcoming addition to the creaminess. While the mafe and moyo sauces weren't really spicy, the spice from the kelewele sweet plaintains caught us off guard. The portion was very big. I shared it with my friend and we still couldn't finish it (We had a small appetite though). So the portion size should be perfect for a grown man. ***Many vendors don't open on weekends. FYI Teranga opens Mon through Sat every week.

Delicious! Fast casual but not wasteful. They will prepare your meal on an enamel plate if you tell them that you are dining in the food court. Lots of flavorful options. I ate the ancient vegan bowl. I'll be back.

Easily one of the best meals I’ve had in 2023. The complexity and range of flavours and textures PLUS the atmosphere of a brand new open air food hall is truly outstanding. Therefore definitely recommend the Chicken Yassa bowl. Omg just looking at the picture of the jollof rice and plantains has got me daydreaming about when I can go back and enjoy it again. Until then, do yourself a favor and go eat there for me.

Teranga is located inside THE HUGH which is an indoor food court you can access from Lexington ave, 3rd ave and even 53rd st. I have ordered the Ancient Vegan Bowl and i am very happy with it, it’s tasty and a lil spicy. I am not too familiar with West African food so i don’t have many other restaurants to compare it with but i liked it a lot. I also got mint/ginger juice for a total of $22

AMAZING food. Truly this was one of the best meals I've had in a long time. The details of this meal make the phenomenal quality even more impressive. I set-up a large group order at work on DoorDash from Teranga, I'd say for roughly 30+ people. Everyone ordered their own meals, so every item was custom for each individual. I ordered the grilled chicken bowl with jollof rice, carrots, and the kale and mango salad. All were delicious. I took one bite of that chicken and stopped so I could savor it (hah!), it was that good. Incredibly tender, juicy, and flavorful. A large portion, too, so I was able to bring some home for my two toddlers to enjoy. I think if they could've drank their food, they would have! Each bite they took was met with exclamations of how good it was. Several coworkers approached me and shared how much they loved their food, too. The fact that Teranga was able to prepare such perfect meals for so many people at once really tells you how great the food is here. Their manager even called me upon delivery to ensure we enjoyed the food (and they labelled everything which is truly *chef's kiss*!). The care and love that is put into this food is apparent in every bite and interaction. I truly cannot wait to order from here again!

Genuinely delicious food. The flavors are deep and complex and the portions are very generous. Feels almost overindulgent as a lunch spot as these are dinner sized portions with a mix of meats, vegetables, sauces etc. If it weren’t all in one bowl and marketed as a lunch spot this easily would be a $30+ meal at a sit down restaurant

The Hugh has such a wonderful atmosphere to grab lunch. Very open, natural light, and lots of seating. The food was great. I really love the plantains that come with the food and felt full after eating. The jollof rice was overcooked but had great flavor. Put some salt and pepper on the food especially for plantains. Little interesting taste from the warm chicken to the cold peas.

Rice was flavorful and the hottest sauce is very hot here. Thought the vegetable options were decent and the beef was not bad, but overall nothing worth shouting too much about.

Update: To anyone reading this: they did reach out with a discount promo, but I want to be clear — that kind of gesture completely misses the point. This wasn’t about money. It was about respect, care, and basic communication. A simple phone call to let us know items were missing or being substituted would’ve shown they valued the customer experience. Instead, it felt like we didn’t matter. I’ll be keeping this review up — because it’s important they address the root issue. Hopefully, it pushes them to do better so other customers aren’t left disappointed the way we were. We were really looking forward to trying Teranga for the first time, but unfortunately, our experience was disappointing. We didn’t receive the Bissap drink we ordered, and instead of the Casamance salad (which should include mango and cucumber), we were given a kale salad—without any notice or explanation. A simple phone call to let us know they were out of an item and ask if we wanted a substitution would have made a big difference. It felt like they didn’t care about the customer experience, which is unfortunate. We wanted to love this meal, but this lack of communication left us very dissatisfied.
