Loved our meal at Kachka! The cod liver buterbrodi was rich, silky, and perfectly balanced. The Siberian pelmeni were such a nice surprise, and the grilled mackerel was perfectly juicy. Everything was flavorful and comforting — would definitely come back!
This place deserves a Google review! My husband took me here for dinner. I’m a former USSR citizen who’s been in the USA for over 30 years now. I was thoroughly impressed by the food and customer service. The atmosphere was amazing, with a great decor and music that brought back many memories from my childhood. I ordered the rabbit in the clay pot with potato pancakes, while my husband opted for cabbage rolls. For dessert, we indulged in vareniki. Derek was an absolute delight! He went above and beyond to ensure we had a wonderful experience. Despite not being from the country of origin, he did an outstanding job, always checking on us and providing valuable recommendations. Another girl was checking on our table to make sure no dirty dishes and water filled. I am beyond happy that this place exists!
Kachka completely lived up to the hype. The cuisine, inspired by the former Soviet Union, was incredible and it was so much fun trying both new-to-me dishes and classics like cabbage rolls and borscht. Our 5:30 reservation also let us catch happy hour, and the horseradish martini and Moscow mule were both excellent. The space is loud, vibrant, and perfect for celebrating, and the staff was warm, friendly, and welcoming from start to finish. There is still so much on the menu I want to try, so I will definitely be back. A fantastic Portland spot all around.
Awesome restaurant full of personality that feels quintessentially Commie Bloc yet Portland at the same time. The workers all get paid profit sharing and really embrace the culture behind it! With loads of tasy flavoured vodkas (big ups to the horseradish - try it) and drinks, you'll have an array of options to get all Slavic to the best of your abilities. The food is unique and incredible, with a focus on sharing multiple options in a large group. If you're in the area, I fully recommend as it not only tasty food but an experience beyond that in of itself!
absolutely the best meal we had in portland. so rich and flavorful and fresh. from the dumplings to the breads to the liver mousse, so delicious. and the cocktails we had were excellent and interesting, and the eastern european lagers were crisp and refreshing. altogether a must. warm and fun and tasty. will definitely be returning.
Can't say I've ever been to a Russian restaurant before but this seemed very authentic and well worth it! We got there early and were seated early to take advantage of happy hour. I didn't love the wine (and should have known better than to get wine as it's not what they're known for) and they were gracious enough to let me switch to a cocktail which was excellent (bourbon with pine). We had a group of four and did family style with both specials. The fritters and dumpings were favorites, nothing disappointed!
My husband and I have made it our mission to try all of the places featured on the Portland episode of ‘Somebody Feed Phil’ from Netflix, and I have to say that Kachka was an absolute hit. The building itself is gorgeous from the large branches running across ceiling to the Eastern European decor scattered tastefully throughout the restaurant, it makes you feel both at home and in a different world. Our server was perfect and went over the menu as it was our first time which was very appreciated, super friendly and inviting. My husband and I ordered the sauerkraut to start, followed by the Tvorog Vareniki and the Penovani Khachapuri, our mains consisted of the chicken and hanger steak Shashlik - the steak was cooked perfectly and the chicken was insanely flavorful. We tried two infused vodkas; a caraway one and the horseradish - caraway was a personal favorite of mine. I recommend dessert even if you’re stuffed to the brim; split the three-layer milk cake as it just rounds your meal off. There’s a small market upstairs, hit that once your meal is over and stock up on some goodies especially the many flavors of Vareniki. I was insanely excited to see a brand of tinned fish I thought I’d only find when I visited Copenhagen. All in all, amazing experience that’s well worth it and I’ll be looking forward to returning. Thank you Kachka!
I never had much exposure to eastern European food before but this place blow away my expectations! Everything sounds so simple with the ingredients but somehow just tastes so good and unexpected! Especially all the pickled veggies. Love the rabbit clay pot that was so delicious and creamy. I'll be back multiple time to try everything! Probably one of my fav Portland restaurant
Amazing dinner with friends. The flavored vodka was fun. The food was amazing. Our server was great and helped us order a wide variety of food. Be brave and try many things. We ended the meal with mint tea. It was really good.
Hands down, one of the best Russian restaurants I’ve been to, if not THE best! Their Pelmeni and vodka are world-class! And their Kachka Vodka is the smoothest vodka I’ve ever had. They also have a small store upstairs for curious people =)
You have to get the dumplings! I’ve had pan fried before but I had a friend recommend the garlic broth. 10/10 for tuorog and pelmeni and the fall mushroom salat! We decided to try something new like the chicken shila palvi versus getting our favorite…rabbit in clay pot. The dill flavor is very strong for the chicken, keep that in mind if you like/don’t like dill.
While they opened in 2014, this was our first visit. We'd been wanting to go here and finally made it New Year's Eve. Service was professional and friendly. We started with the bread and butter, borscht, and dumplings followed by the rabbit with latkes and chicken. We were too full for dessert.
We came for a special occasion in a big group of 8. I enjoyed the quirky Soviet style ambience. The food choices were staples of the Russian cuisine sometimes re-imagined and beautifully arranged into a tasty morsels!
Great food, great service! This Russian restaurant is warm and welcoming, with a cozy atmosphere and traditional decor. The food tastes homemade and very authentic. The staff was friendly and helpful, and the service was quick. Don’t forget to try their house-made drinks or a shot of vodka! Highly recommend if you want to enjoy real Russian food in a nice setting.
What a Great place to discover. This restaurant took the best testes of all the historical Soviet Union dishes and improved them with the new modern flow! Everything we tried was fresh, delicious, and nicely served. We were in town just for 2 days and yet, decided to come back once again for lunch before leaving. Service was beyond professional and at the same time welcoming and friendly. Thank you for that joyful time travel.
Kachka is a Portland staple and a delicious treat every time. The TARVUZ-TINI might be the best martini I have had in a very long time, highly recommend! If you are in the mood for comfort Russian cuisine their dumplings can’t be beat. The rabbit in a clay pot was the highlight of the meal and was very flavorful and tender. Can’t recommend Kachka enough! Just make sure you make a reservation, walk-ins can be challenging.
I had lunch here with a friend while I was on town for a convention. It's just far enough away from the convention center to be a calm place to enjoy your meal, even if multiple events are going on. My food (the Siberian Pelmeni) was incredible. It was the perfect place for my friend and I to catch up.
Best meal we had in Portland. Truly wonderful ambiance with amazing food, no wonder it's so hyped up. We made a reservation, and I'm super glad we did, because it was totally packed. The best by far were the meat dumplings, but everything was excellent. Even the pickled vegetables were lovely. Will for sure be back!
Very inviting atmosphere, friendly staff serving up a unique dining and bar experience with house-made horseradish infused vodka, and great eastern European food. If you're looking for something different, I highly recommend coming here.
Kachka is an amazing restaurant. The atmosphere is warm and inviting. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and always ready with a suggestion. The drinks are expertly made and their vodka infusions are thoughtful and well executed. Finally the food was absolutely delicious and definitely made eith care. The salo was other worldly in its delicate flavor that just melted in your mouth. The herring in a fur coat tastes like homemade but executed with a nice restaurant flare. The pelmini and vareniki were tender and full of flavor. Their desserts were delightful and full of fresh flavor. The strawberries in the berries and cream dessert were perfectly sweet and played well with the airy creaminess of the smetana. I was in town for business and ended up here 2 nights in a row and seriously considering making it a third.
Date night and Kachka to the rescue! Make sure to make reservations here; but do consider coming a bit early and sitting in the private lounge upstairs, complete with a small Soviet-themed store. You can also have a sip of wine if that is your thing, while you wait. Food here is in a portion that can be shared with your significant other or your guest and each meal is simply unmatched! The foodis given in small rounds and I advise to start with the cold cuts and soups first and then move on to the hearty dishes for the best experience. Delicious, gourmet, pickled and flavorful are words that come to mind when I think of the food. The Staff is kind, quick and knowledgeable, they are trained to be able to explain every European dish they offer. Although this place is always packed, it has a really good vibe and you will feel comfortable and joyful in your surroundings.
I picked this restaurant after finding it on open table and being intrigued by every dish. We did the zakuski experience, and were able to try so much of the menu. If you’re at all considering doing this experience, we highly recommend! We got some hot dumplings as well and I’ll be dreaming of the cheese ones for a while. We sampled the horseradish vodka and bought bottles to take home. The ambience is also fantastic. The place is wonderfully and thoughtfully decorated, the noise levels are moderate, and the energy is evident throughout. Every member of the staff we spoke to was knowledgeable, kind, and fun. We live out of town, but we will come by again next time we visit Portland.
Unbelievable! My partner and I celebrated our wedding anniversary here last night. One of my favorite food experiences in Portland. Our server, Adam, was so helpful and fun. The food was so quality and exquisite. Loved the raspberry soup, the dumplings, herring under a wool coat, the rabbit, and the desert and drinks. Vibes were on point. Thanks to Kachka for the wonderful evening.
The menu can be a challenge for those unfamiliar with Eastern European staples, but everything is lovingly presented and fantastic. Great food and excellent service. The Russian-centric beverage menu seemed a little lacking, but there were some really good wines and you need to try the Moscow Mule, absolutely amazing!
Visiting from Iowa with the wife. Stopped in for my birthday dinner. We loved the caviar, nachos, dumplings and rabbit. The sour cherry vodka was solid too. The really fun atmosphere and friendly staff made us feel welcome and knowledgeable. The tea was a solid finisher with their ice cream sandwiches.
This is a wonderful dining experience, the crew is so warm, inviting and professional, the seating is comfortable and most importantly the food is inspired different and delicious. It's a must stop when in Portland.
This place is like a little slice of Eastern Europe. I could eat the pelmeni every day - so fresh with dill and sour cream. Fair warning that it might not be the most palatable for those accustomed to more western style dishes and flavors. Dishes are a little on the smaller side so I’d recommend a group of 4 or less. Worth a visit!
Fantastic meal. Service was impeccable and every bite delicious. Highlights were: spinach pie, cod liver buterbrodi, and the carpaccio. This place does an amazing job of blending the modern with the traditional in such an authentic way. Cabbage rolls reminded me of a dish my great grandmother used to make when I was growing up. We will absolutely be back.
Kachka is amazing. The food is so delicious. I was amazed by the dishes and how quickly it was served. The dumplings were out of this world. I love to return and try out other items on the menu.
I recently visited Kachka in Portland and was blown away by the authentic Russian cuisine. The atmosphere was lively and energetic, with a bustling open kitchen and colorful decor. The service was excellent, with the waitstaff being knowledgeable and helpful in guiding us through the menu. The food was absolutely delicious, with a wide variety of traditional dishes to choose from. I’ve been here twice and have almost tried out the entire menu and not a single dish has been disappointing. The drinks menu was also impressive, with a great selection of vodka and infused vodka options. Overall, I had an amazing experience at Kachka and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique and delicious dining experience. The staff went above and beyond to ensure that we had a great time, and I can't wait to go back and try more of their fantastic food.
We simply loved the vibes and flavors here. Had all types of pickles, bread, fish, and finally a skewered beef. Oh and dumplings! The herring binder a fur coat and dumplings with game meat were truly lovely, and the ambiance is sweet as pie. Highly recommend.
Amazing experience. We came here for Sunday lunch and everything was just perfect. Our waiter, Wendy was attentive, friendly, and helped us pick out which dishes to share. The food (ploughman's platter, veal blini, cheese dumplings, fish on toast, and Napoleon) was delicious, well presented, and very filling. The interior and design choices made the restaurant charming and inviting. We had a lovely time.
Amazing place with delicious food and drinks. You can go for lunch or happy hour and spend $20-$30 or you could go hard and spend $200, so the range is wide. Great place to get multiple items and share. My favorite is the borscht and pelmeni with horseradish infused vodka.
Honestly our favorite restaurant in Portland! The food is excellent: super fun, creative, and most importantly delicious. The service is extremely attentive, while the vibe is casual, the level of service feels high end. We ate about half the menu, and loved all of it!
Best restaurant in Portland. You have to have the rabbit in a clay pot and farmers cheese dumplings. The first few times we came, I was intimidated by the cold dishes but after having a taste, I started trying them and they are unique and fantastic. This is the only place I would EVER have been willing to not just try, but choose and order, cod liver-- and it was delicious. I'm not a drinker, but I tried the horseradish vodka, and if you like horseradish it's a must-try. My first time they brought me a green onion and flaky salt to dip it in as a chaser and now I ask for it every time. The green onions here are unusually delicious here…. Great service. Beautiful decor. Incredible food and drink. I cannot think of a bad thing to say.
Had the best dinning experience on Valentines day, the food was amazing, innovative, flavorful, the wait staff was amazing, super friendly and knowledgeable, the atmosphere was comfortable the locale was easy to get to and appreciated the free garage parking right next door. My new favorite spot, we will be back!
Absolute banger of a spot to dine at!! I was in town to visit friends who had moved up to Portland and the hubs suggested this spot for a dinner. I was not expecting just how delicious and comforting everything was going to taste if I'm being quite honest. We were planning to another outing for drinks and schnacks at a bar afterwards, so ordered less aggressively than I would normally; but it was the perfect amount of food for a first meal. We got cocktails and 1 item each to share. Went with the mushroom kharcho (my personal standout of the night), the golubtsi (solid choice), and the oladi (the most comforting thing I ate this trip). The mushroom kharcho was so warm and delicious. It was like being wrapped in a blanket fresh from the dryer. I was honestly in love with this dish and quite sad we hadn't ordered a second one. The zuchonni oladi were very reminiscent of the vegetable fritters we had growing up, so honestly this was the simplest and most comforting dish at the same time. I could eat 2 orders easily and be as happy as a clam. Their golubtsi/cabbage roll was delicious. It's a very solid dish. I'm not always a fan of cabbage rolls at every spot I've had them, but this one was definitely a hit. All of the cocktails were lovely and honestly the service was warm and friendly. Bonus was the free little parking garage nearby. I would definitely want to come back sometime and try a few more dishes because I had my eye on several other things, but I didn't want to completely kill my appetite for second dinner.
Kachka is a very special restaurant. When I started seeing my Russian partner, I quickly realized how few restaurants served anything from that part of the world. Yes there are cafes, food trucks, and slavic markets with excellent offerings, but we had yet to find a sit down restaurant with authentic food from the region. When we went to Kachka I was blown away by ambience of the restaurant, the cocktails, and the food options. I recently took his mother here, who grew up in the USSR, and she had a wonderful time. I am very happy that we have Kachka to continue sharing the culture that I have been lucky enough to learn about through my partner and his family, and will continue coming here for years to come. Great food, great employees, and great vibes. A true "must visit" if you are visiting Portland or have lived here for many years!
Unique flavors. The dumplings are really tasty. Staff is extremely nice and attentive. It's a very popular place so you might want to get reservations.
The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The food was good, and the interior had an interesting style. While it's Eastern European cuisine, the decor leaned heavily toward “russian” or Soviet-era themes—which some may find nostalgic, but felt a bit odd to me. The *Stand with Ukraine* sticker that was once on the menu is no longer there. Happy hour prices are great, and I’d recommend trying something from the dessert menu. It was quite busy on a Sunday evening, so we did wait a while for our food.
Great place to try some Russian styled food. They have a large selection of house infused vodkas each with a unique flavor. This place is great for ordering a lot of dishes and sharing with the table. My top item was the beef and lamb cabbage roll in tomatoes.
The food and the service was great. Definitely if you go there, you need to try the herring under the fur coat, the dumplings veal and cheese, and the cherry and ice cream sorbet. The pickles weren’t as good, they didn’t have much flavors. The most disappointing plate was the lamb rack. It was really hard to cut the ribs, also there was barely meat on them. Even though it says it’s for two people. Flavor was good. The pickles were not
The cocktails were good. The fish board had a lovely selection of tasty bites. This was probably the best thing we ordered. The dumplings were quite good but the different dumplings tasted very similar and we probably ordered too many. For mains we had the borscht which was the most disappointing dish of the evening, thin and under seasoned. We don't see this as being a go-to restaurant for us.
It’s an interesting restaurant with fantastic service, and it’s fun to try a Russian restaurant. However, the food we tried was just okay. We paid $6 for two slides of bread and butter with spring onion and sea salt — both the bread and butter were tasteless. The pickle board was fine. The Herring under a fur is cute but needed some salt. The cabbage rolls, however, were really salty, and the lamb was quite gamey. The Borsch could have easily been the best dish, but it was lukewarm. The sour cherry dumplings were good but would have been better with a cherry coulis on top, like most places would do. All in all, for a little over $100 for two people, we’re not sure it was worth it. We might come back to try other dishes… but not 100% sure. 😊 all in all, a fun dining experience
I have so mixed feelings about this place. Interior with some random pieces from USSR reminds me my childhood and how much I hate everything about Soviet regime and Russia. At the same time this place has a tiny sign "we stand with Ukraine", which in my opinion needs to be represented way more than that. We ordered pelmeni, vareniki with cherry, blini with caviar, grenki with shprots. All tastes fine, overpriced though. Now about vareniki. Shame! It has nothing to do with original dish. It's never supposed to look and taste like pelmeni stuffed with only one cherry!!! It has to be at least 3 times bigger pieces with couple fruits inside and topped with fresh made cherry syrup, not some chopped greens. I agree with other reviewers: worth to try once and it's enough, don't want to come back. Sorry 😞
A little confused about what I just ate. Highly recommended but expectations were not met. The dumplings were interesting and the meat inside the cabbage rolls was tender. Everything else was a miss - dry, chewy, and lacked flavor 😬BUT best vodka I’ve ever had. I should’ve stopped after my martini.
For the most part it was fabulous. We went for lunch. My brother didn't like the borsch but the dumplings were delicious as well as the egg sandwich. Great service and I appreciate that tip is already set and they pay a living wage. Wish more would go this way.
Definitely a go to place in portland over the years. Been here five or six times over five years and have been slightly more and more disappointed. Recently had a bad food experience. Bland dumplings for dumpling week. More like tostino pizza rolls. Cherry dumplings were undercooked but still very tasty. The cabbage rolls were good but lukewarm. Had some mozzarella sticks that were average but had a good dipping sauce. Mushroom entree dish was awful, lacked any amount of salt. Service was still pretty good, only notable person was the food runner. Server, hostess and bartender were going through the motions. And with a 22% service fee I expect more, I guess when you don't have to earn it you don't need to actually be personable and informative especially with a fairly foreign menu. I shouldn't have to use Google, that's what server training is for. Spent $280 for a table of 4.
Kachka wants you to know they "Stand With Ukraine." They also want you to buy Russian imported foods. It's a strategy to please everyone, and it makes their virtue signaling the main course on a menu of hypocrisy. I have a simple question: Is selling that jar of Russian jam really worth the ethical compromise?
Hear me out! Great service, ladies knew the menu and were quick. That’s the only good part about that place. Food kinda sucked. Overpriced is one thing, but cheese dumplings were fishy, chicken dish was plain and looked the same way, the vegan dish (not sure what it was) was returned to kitchen as well. Tips were mandatory to any party size, but servers getting paid only 25$ on hour… hmmmm. No thanks!
