A great little place to eat. I have been there twice, leaving happy both times. It is right on Main Street. Parking is behind the building. The wait staff is fun and knowledgeable. My waiter last visit was extra funny and helped make our time there more fun. The food is farm to table. At first, I thought the prices were a little high, I was wrong. Once I tasted the food, it was clear how much effort and talent went into making me happy. Delicious to say the least. Beautiful decor and very clean. If you're in Riverhead, make this a stop for sure.
After a long day at the aquarium, we found this amazing place and fell in love. Called minutes ahead and were able to make room to sit 6. The staff is super friendly and very knowledgeable when it comes to gluten-free options. THEY CAN MAKE ANYTHING ON THE MENU GLUTEN FREE. My wife is 7 months pregnant and has celiac. Dark Horse allowed us to have one of the most pleasant experiences. For the first time in 7 years my wife was able to eat corn bread; it was warm and moist. The Merlot beef was super tender and delicious. The duck is crispy on the outside and pulls off the bone. The mashed potatoes were creamy and delicious. My wife and I live an hour and a half away and are already planning our next visit before she gives birth.
We went for Valentine's Day and enjoyed the farm to table taste of their food. It is French American and it was our first time. We should have come sooner. The portions were just right and the food was delicious. Steak and frites, french onion soup and bay scallops were amazing. Espresso creme brulee was out of this world. The old fashioned and elder gin drinks were fresh and tasty and strong. The waitress was very good. Great ambiance. A cool corner in Riverhead to enjoy the city-like atmosphere. All around a great place for a drink or dinner. Tell 'em Barsnobs sent ya!
The food was phenomenal. Crab cakes were insanely good, and an absolutely perfect Bloody Mary. Staff was excellent highly recommended!
This place was the perfect place for a date! Small restaurant with a great atmosphere. Would highly recommend based on the food (Merlot Beef & Winter veggie curry). While all the food we got was great, the Brussels sprouts… worth going again if possible. The staff was excellent and knowledgeable of the area. Overall great experience!
Came here on a quiet weekday to enjoy dinner. After grabbing a bar seat and a Brooklyn Lager I started off with the French Onion Soup. It was really tasty. One of my favorites. For dinner I had the Steak Frites and, once again, the chef was able to really make the flavor of the steak jump out. My bartender / server, Ross, did an excellent job and I could find no faults in this restaurant. Extremely enjoyable evening. I'll be back!
This is a charming restaurant. The staff is incredibly down to earth and friendly. The food was very good with decent portions.
We walked out of “Farm Country Fresh” due to their disgusting attitude and customer service. Ended up making reservations to the “Dark Horse” parking is amazing very safe the customer service is very warm welcoming I love our waitress that took care of us she was very sweet and attentive I am so happy to spend my money at your restaurant because you guys appreciate your customers to the fullest I will definitely be going back!!
Had an amazing lunch! Fried Chicken sandwich was just perfect 🤌🏻
Plenty of gluten free options (including beer), less so for dairy free (the GF breads contains small amounts of dairy). Still worth it. Everything was delicious. PS - Their fryer has no gluten items, so all fried items are GF.
Food is delicious, wait staff is laid back and extremely nice. Can't complain about this place.
Private room with a bar, perfect for our family and friends for our rehearsal dinner (9/3/21). We had about 35 people. The food was delicious! We chose the buffet option to keep it less formal but sit down is available. The staff was so helpful and accommodating during the planning process. We were free to come in at any time during the day to decorate
Just celebrated my moms birthday here and all I can say is this is the best restaurant we could have picked. Not only was the staff amazing, super attentive but not over bearing, but the food was also absolutely delicious and served for everyone at the same time. If anyone is looking to host a lot of people, we had 18, this is the place to do it. Thank you dark horse for being awesome!
I cannot say enough about the steak dinner “Peter” the chef cooked us the other night! It was a steak that you will think about when you wake up! A definite visit will happen soon! So the steak cooked medium Rare PERFECT! The snow peas and asparagus and mashed potatoes were all perfect and delicious! Each food complimented the other. The herbs and spices on this incredibly juicy steak blended so amazingly with potatoes and vegetable! It will be something you won’t forget!! The waiting staff were nice and attentive. Ross the manager was very nice and genuinely cares about the customer! Very professional, in today’s times it nice to see there are people who care about customers. We look forward to going again soon!
Let me recall by saying that I’ve gone to this place 2 times now (each time on a Sunday afternoon) and each time me and my friends went we’ve had a pleasurable experience. The coffee is good , and the atmosphere is very comfortable and easygoing. Food fills up pretty good and the chefs are GREAT at what they do 😋 no complaints and will be returning .
Late Saturday night dinner. Calamari followed by Sesame encrusted tuna & pulled pork special. Impeccable service by Jackie. Great food, too much so we took some home.
Had brunch here on a Sunday. Everything was amazing! My husband and I shared the breakfast burger and French toast and could not have been more satisfied. Definitely would come back! Our waitress was friendly and pleasant too.
We hosted a rehearsal dinner before our son's wedding. We had dietary restrictions in our group of 24 (gluten, vegetarian). Ross took our dietary restrictions seriously and put together menu options and considered our input as well. The food was made with fresh ingredients and tasted amazing. The portion sizes were great. Ross was there to oversee our tables to make sure everything went smoothly the entire night. We couldn't have hoped for a better evening!
Loved the gluten free options! Great place for lunch, especially if some of your party has allergy and others dont. Loved it! And an even better place for dinner! I was able to get a gluten free IPA and anything on the menu can be made gluten free!! A dream come true.
This restaurant is excellent and anything on the menu can be gluten free by request. The fried Brussel sprouts are AMAZING and I don't even love Brussel sprouts. I wanted to try them. My husband was not interested AT ALL and ended up eating half of them! The food is so flavorful and fresh! I like to dine cheap. It's not cheap but worth the price! Portion size is also very good and atmosphere is very nice!
Our first time to Dark Horse. Service was wonderful, food delicious, portions size spot on! We will definitely be returning.
Park the car in the riverside lot now. Walk around to corner of East Main & enter. Sunday brunch was sublime. Wine list💋. Service, Maeve, excellent. We enjoyed this spot on our journey through Riverhead. It was great 👍 💯
Dark horse has a great gluten-free menu. Many of these items you would not find at other restaurants that say they are gluten-free such as gluten-free fried chicken. The food is also very tasty and the service is impeccable.
A very quiet preseason evening. Exceptional service and all guests enjoyed their meals. Food was prompt and hot. Drinks filled to the brim. We were pleased with everything.
Food was amazeballs. We ordered the homemade baked cornbread, which came in a homey skillet, and shared the fried chicken with sausage gravy and smashed potatoes. It was nicely made and delectable. Even the broccoli was tasty. Service was fantastic.
It's been a few years since I wad there last. I was in Riverhead for work and stayed down the street at the Hyatt. Walked here one evening and spent it at their bar enjoying some of the best food and drink. I had elk for the first time and it was delicious. Several vodka sodas and good conversation with both staff and other patrons. I hope to have reason to visit again someday.
Great food, the staff is incredible. We never felt rushed or that we were a bother. If you are looking for a great spot for lunch or dinner! Give it a try! You wont regret it
The food here is exquisite, and the waitresses are very kind and helpful. The prices are a little on the high side; however, the price is definitely worth the meal. I recommend using this restaurant for small immediate family outings, a small friends outing, or a date night. My favorite dishes were the doho trio with French onion soup as a starter, and the doho burger.
Lovely atmosphere and very welcoming staff. The waiter that was there on our visit was very accommodating and conversational. The food choice were phenomenal. I ended up getting the crabs Benedict. The presentation is okay the taste was great. The muffins on the other hand was a lil bit hard for my liking. Nevertheless, the home fries was certainly on point. I highly recommend this restaurant, we will definitely comeback!
The food here is very well prepared. The service is quick and knowledgeable. I've had lunch here once a week for over four months and each time is better or comparable to the last. Full disclosure, I only ever get the bison burger, as do my friends but that's only because once you've had the bison burger it's hard to choose anything else. They have a good draft beer selection and a full bar too. Plenty of options, worth a trip if only to try a bison burger.
Yum yum yum. Attentive service. Try the goat cheese grilled cheese, it was delicious
Very good food. Nice waitress..The Angus beef burger is fresh and tasty. Perfect for lunch.
Had a wonderful experience here. My wife requires gluten-free dining and this was the perfect stop. They were very accommodating to her needs. A bit pricey but the food was great. Well worth a second visit and then some.
Very nice, clean and friendly. Our waitress Jennifer was so delightful, sweet and just very thoughtful. Our food was amazing especially the crab dip and chips delicious. Braised Beef Medallions Melt in your mouth no knife needed. I give this place 👍👍👍👍
⭐⭐⭐⭐ My family and I had a great experience at Dark Horse Tavern! They offer amazing gluten-free options, which is such a rare find. Although there was only one server on the floor, which slowed things down a little, he did an incredible job of keeping up with all the tables and making sure everyone was taken care of. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was welcoming.
Lunch was good, room was empty for a Friday lunch. Duck wrap was good, potato planks were great. Views of main street were not great.
The food was prepared perfectly. I had the sesame crusted tuna, and my wife had the hanger steak. Both were delicious. We were, however disappointed by the lack of bread for which we had asked. They do have gluten free bread, apparently, but only if it comes with your meal. The service we received was, in a word, terrible! It took 20 minutes to place our drink order, 10 minutes to receive it, and 30 minutes more to receive our food. All in a restaurant with about 38 seats ( half of them unoccupied) and 3 servers. Would we go back?- yes, for the food quality. This may have been the only time I tipped less than 10% on a restaurant bill and that was because my wife insisted I leave 5 dollars. My choice was $1.
Nice place with a bright and open feel. Menu felt like it was lacking... or maybe it just wasn't up my alley. Had the roasted chicken sandwich, which had a very nice flavor. The fresh cut potato fries were great... crispy and slightly overcooked, how they should be!
Rustic, great atmosphere. Not busy at the time which I thought was unusual. (Friday, 630) Nice presentation of the food which tasted okay. Excellent service, a bit on the expensive side.
We were thrilled when we heard this restaurant was celiac safe. Unfortunately, my celiac husband did have a reaction when we got home. It wasn’t full blown, which makes me think it was due to bread cross-contamination (we both ordered burgers).
Not sure why someone would come here. It’s not fancy enough to be a romantic restaurant. But it’s not cheap enough to be a dinner. Dark Horse is lost in a gray area of meaningless with over priced food and a small menu. The large booths are well suited for a large crowd, but the restaurant is small which sort of defeats the purpose. Even the service leans on cheap dinner dive.
Waitress clueless when asked questions about the food. Every statement was no we don't serve that. Maybe she should learn the menu. The meat had too much salt and was not edible. Too bad this restaurant was once wonderful but not now.
Staff was great. Food not so much. Fried calamar was the worst I've ever had, tough and chewy. Burger was RAW,I don't know if it was even put on the grill. Told the waiter burger was raw and he agreed. I was offended a complimentary glass of wine . They still charge us for the burger even though I only took two bites of RAW chop meat, wasn't asked if I wanted recooked
Greeter and server were both rude and made us uncomfortable. After that the atmosphere, food, etc., nothing else mattered. Couldn't wait to leave.
My wife and I and two of our friends were looking for a place to eat after a day at the wineries, we read reviews about this place and thought this would be good. So we walked in around 4:30 in the evening, the place was dark, tables were empty except for a couple. The waitress greeted us and asked if we had reservations! We did not have reservations, so she said all these tables are reserved and the only thing available is this high table. So we thought Okay, well it'll be short, eat and run. We sat down, got the menus and low and behold, the selection of food was so under whelming, it made the whole experience not worthwhile. So we got up and left and went to another restaurant where we were seated, spent a lot of money and had delicious Turkish food. Now the point I'm trying to make is yes, maybe those tables were reserved, we were there early enough, we would've had some food and left the place way before any reserved table was needed, and then you give us a menu that a small take out place would be more appealing and would have more selection! So you've lost us as customers and no good word about you from this small crowd.
Went to have lunch today after hearing good reviews. I was excited to try, so my son and I ordered two different dishes. His was the chicken which came out well cooked. I ordered a burger medium rare with cheddar and when i took a bite the burger was raw inside. (Fyi i went to culinary school so not in my head). I showed the waitress and she was wonderfully apologetic after seeing it and asked if i would like them to remake it. I said thank you and shared my sons sandwich. During that time i noticed the table next to me also sent their burger back and asked to take their new one to go. My second burger came out and when i bit in i immediately saw the burger was past well done. Again i called the waitress over to show her and she agreed and said she was so sorry. I am not sure if the chef was being a clown because he was upset about the burger being sent back or if he was just unaware of how to cook a burger. I was disappointed a manager never came by because i would have gladly let it go. So sad i have to write a review because i hate communicating this way. Hopefully it was just a bad day and my experience was in the minority.
Came in ,place was empty...we had 9 people...the lady behind the bar said she has no seats.i said split us up 5/4 two different tables. Mind you again place was empty ..she said as long as one of albe sits at a high table .I said no problem...then She said no room after all that ...I said stop playing mind games ...I'll never ever go back ...staff cannot handle a empty place ...with nine people coming in...they should be all fired ...we met the owners a long time ago...they where very nice .. but horrible staff...I can completely understand if place was full...with 9 I get it ...but again empty.... empty empty empty....don't go
Chicken burger was inedible. Fries were barely edible. Cole slaw looked like it came from a 5 gallon pail. Dijon mustard was French’s. You can find another place to eat.
GLUTEN FREE PATRONS BEWARE. My husband got poisoned here. He and I ordered a gluten free sandwich, and the waiter made an error, and he ate a sandwich containing gluten. Please be careful for your health. Avoid this place.
