Addis Ababa is back. The best Ethiopian food in NY!!! So good the were able to re-open. Ethiopia is a magic country with an ancient fascinating history and culture. And the food is unique, exótic, nutricious and delicious. Dont hessitate and give it a try, you won't repent. The restaurant itself is very clean and sort of a little museum. IN I used to live in Ethiopia by the 80s. And I've started feeling the same emotion ever since I visited this restaurant. I've tried their Shiro, Kitfo, Ye-Beg tibs, and they're awesome. But if you are vegetarian it's ok, they have a huge variety of dishes that will surely guarantee your satisfaction. Don't miss the Habesha bunna. After the first time you just don't be able to help going again and again. You'll also find the most friendly and nice people always willing to give you an unforgettable experience. highly recommend the place.

The first step I take inside Addis Ababa always makes me feel at great calm, the place makes me want to mozzey through a pasture. The ambiance is incredibly. The music is smooooth and chillaxes me. And the pictures and decor of the restaurant are simple but bright. The food, well that you don’t need to worry about. I can assure you there’s no going wrong with whatever mouth watering traditional dish you choose. The workers are fun!!!! Tripendicular even!!! So much so that being here makes you feel at home with a family. Whether your from Ethiopia or not. DJ ( the owner) and Aden (the most wonderful cook) will never fail at making you feel wholeheartedly welcomed. But, if this is true for you, is your journey to discover. (P.S, I think you will find your gonna enjoy it as much as I do.) Happily, Marley Goldberg

The vegetarian platter and tibs are really good. Ethiopian coffee is great if anyone is into coffee. Great atmosphere and the owner is very hospitable. You definitely will enjoy yourself.

We went in on a Saturday evening. Nice atmosphere. Spacious and nicely decorated with beautiful art and artifacts representing Ethiopian culture. We ordered Kitfo, Lamb Cha Cha, and the spicy red lentils. The food was delicious. The presentation of the lamb cha cha was super cool -- in a clay pot over hot coals -- and the food was delicious. It was tender and moist even down to the last bites even though it was still cooking. I had the kitfo raw and was delighted by the level of spice. The spicy red lentils were spectacular, and the combination of spices was perfect. To top it all off, our server, Tsega, saw us appreciating the art and walked us around the restaurant explaining lots of Ethiopian culture to us. He was super friendly and very knowledgeable. I can't wait to go back. They even serve breakfast!

Fantastic food! We all had the vegetarian platter so we could try all those dishes. Every single one was delicious! The service was so attentive and kind - it was like visiting friends!

The food is fantastic, with lots of options for both meat eaters and vegetarians. Some things can be a bit on the spicy side (for me, at least) but they're so good you'll keep eating anyway. I've eaten multiple dishes here and never been disappointed. Highlights for me are the sambusas, the vegetarian platter, the kitfo (you can get it raw or partially/fully cooked), the vegetable soup, and the yebeg cha cha. If you've never eaten Ethiopian food before and you're open to new things, you should definitely give it a try.

A Feast for All of Your Senses I always look forward to my visits to Rochester and Addis Ababa is always a part of my itinerary. The food is truly sensational and the atmosphere is inviting--great aromas, music, and art create just the right vibe. The owners/staff treat me like family; I always feel at home here. I have enjoyed several dishes here, but Chicken Bebere is my go-to entrée. I like the Sambusa as a starter. Vegetables like the Gomen, Miser and Tikel Gomen are great too!

This place is amazing. The owner is so friendly and made great suggestions for what to order my first time there. I’ve ordered takeout from here a couple times now and it’s just so good. Sambusas are highly recommended, don’t forget the sambusas!

A "mom and pop" owned authentic Ethiopian restraunt. The owners and cooks are the same and are actually from Addis Ababa. They are very friendly. The wife and I split the beef sambusa (appetizer) and the Addis Ababa Special. All very good. We topped it off with the Ethiopian coffee for two. Very pleasant experience for a fair price.

Wonderful food. Never tried Ethiopian food before, but decided to try something different while we were visiting the area. Everything was delicious! We probably ordered too much food, but ended up finishing it all anyways because it was so good 😊

First time ever having Ethiopian food and it was delicious. The menu was pretty intimidating because I didn't really know what anything was but it all ended up being ok cause everything we got was delicious. A great new food experience 😊 I'd def go back. Also the portions are very large !

The staff here was very friendly, and the food was excellent! We tried the lunch buffet which was a great way for us to try a lot of different dishes. Our favorite was the green beans, but all the food was fantastic. We'll definitely be back again!

I've been there 5 times in the last several months. Each time I'm always greeted warmly by the hosts and the waiters. I LOVE the vegetarian buffet - it's delicious and an EXCELLENT value!!!!! Addis Ababa is also very close to where I work and the coffee is great. What a great find in the city of Rochester!

Absolutely scrumptious Ethiopian food. I recently moved to the area and have been on a hunt for my go-to restaurant when I'm craving this cuisine. I was so happy to see Shiro on the menu as it's one of my favorites, and it did not disappoint! I see many veggie combos in my future (I subbed it for gomen). Friendly staff, generous portions, reasonable prices, and seriously good food. Love, love, love and love! :D

N

The food is seriously good (on par with NYC and DC restaurants) and you get lots of it inexpensively, and the owner is the nicest guy! Recommend 100%! There’s definitely options for people whose palates need a milder (less sour injera or less spicy) taste, but also more flavourful options for those who wish it! Plus the spiced tea is a delicious way to end your meal. I would eat here multiple times a week if I lived closer.

Our first time here and it was great. The sambusas were excellent. The injera was perfect--the last few places we'd been to served a kinda mushy injera. We had great, well seasoned entrees and the Ethiopian coffee was delicious. Plus the prices were good and the staff very courteous and helpful. We'll be going back.

G

My family and I came for my birthday dinner and wow! It was absolutely amazing! The food was delicious, everyone was so welcoming and friendly. They give the perfect proportions, with the perfect amount of injera. We so also got the coffee and it was served in a traditional jebena and delicious. I’ve already recommended a few friends to come here, and I can’t wait to go back for more!

K

The food here is out of this world amazing and the portions are fantastic. I had the veggie platter and was only able to eat half before I was full. The people are friendly and give great service. I can't express enough how much I love this place! It's my new favorite restaurant here in Rochester.

My family visited with another Ethiopian family. The food was great; it was as close to a home-cooked Ethiopian meal as you could get without being home. Truly authentic. My wife really enjoyed the kitfo & gored gored (meat) dishes. I eat vegan and I was very happy with the options I had available to me. The injera was also very good - light and soft with a nice flavor and no heavy stomach feeling later on. The atmosphere was relaxing, the restaurant was clean and the owner was extremely attentive and helpful. We had a wonderful experience. If you are looking for authentic Ethiopian food at a good price, with plenty of options (including vegetarian/vegan), this restaurant is definitely the place to go.

I tried it for the first time tonight from a friends reference. Some of the best damn food I ever had. I ordered the beef samusa and doro wot with dinech wot and gomen. I’m glad to say that I was blown away, so much delicious flavor and spice. I cannot wait for my next meal at this place!

We were warmly welcomed by the owner and seated in a lovely room decorated with Ethiopian artwork, and the national flag. We ordered the Addis Ababa platter, which could feed five easily - and costs less than $30. Red lentils, yellow lentils, chard, beef stew, lamb stew and chicken doro wat. Unbelievably delicious!! We were silent, it was *that* good. The injera bread was soft and delicious, and when our host saw we we getting low, immediately brought more. (There is a tradition to use small pieces of bread to wrap stew, in place of forks. It is especially polite to wrap a choice morsel and feed it to someone - so, you know: Good date spot!) We had the Ethiopian coffee service for $15: It's freshly made best-quality Ethiopian coffee poured into small cups tableside. It's more coffee/espresso than two adults can drink....this is a better choice for a group. There is a buffet offered for lunch and dinner, there is African beer and traditional Ethiopian honey wine, and it's a very family-friendly atmosphere. There's a large parking lot in front of the restaurant, and it's in a safe neighborhood. The Gold Standard for me? Five other Ethiopian expats were eating there. There's a store attached to the restaurant which sells spices, incense, and textiles from the homeland. We will be going back soon!

Adis Ababa made my day; I feel so good. No microwaves, no deep fat fryers…just wholesome delicious Ethiopian food prepared with love. D.J. (the owner) greeted my daughter and I personally despite us having been away for more than a year. Within minutes all stress dropped away while we enjoyed the gentle African polyrhythms playing. His updated seating area is sparkling clean and features a charming Ethiopian motif. High ceilings with skylights permit a warm glow; I’m transported. Be sure to introduce yourself to D.J. and Aden (chef extraordinaire) when you go: true Rochester treasures.

I enjoyed a weekday lunch in this quiet setting. It was a first visit and a first experience with Ethiopian food and we were very happy with the meal, which was flavorful and not in any way overpowering. The meal was a good value for lunch with two entrees and an appetizer costing little more than $20, while we had water to drink. I'll be glad to return for more.

H

Very very friendly staff. The dinner buffet was all veggie although the menu has meat dishes. The injera bread was great and the buffet dishes offered a good combination of mostly veggie items and mostly beans/grains. The Ethiopian coffee is roasted in the kitchen and not really available to go. So we had it in the restaurant and were charmed by the special clay coffee pot with the little spout.

D
Debra W.

Great food! I had dishes from the vegetarian menu and the quality of the food is as good or better than I've had anywhere. They even provide silverware and cut the injera (bread) for anyone who doesn't want to eat the traditional way (with your hands). Try this place.

My wife and I ate at Addis Ababa and had a wonderful meal. We had the Vegetarian Buffet which featured a broad selection of dishes. It was delicious! Shiro ( Chickpea Stew) Ground chickpeas simmered in a rich house sauce and spiced with butter and Miser (Spicy Split Red Lentil Stew) Lentils stewed in a rich berbere sauce, onions, garlic and ginger were two of our favorite dishes. The owner and his wife, who is the chef, are wonderful hosts. We hope you give Addis Ababa a try it was a wonderful experience. We will be going back to try more of the menu.

A flavorful platter definitely enough for 2 people. There were more curries but ran out of injera, otherwise enough for 3 people. We had takeout and it was easier because they have a separate pickup window.

Been here many times over the last four years and as confirmed by my visit yesterday, their quality is consistently excellent! The smell wafting from the kitchen as you walk in is incredible, making your mouth water and preparing you for an extremely flavorful banquet. Very friendly staff as well who really make you feel welcome. The lamb I had yesterday was some of the most succulent, juicy, and rich meat I've had in quite some time, cooked to absolute perfection. Every time I come here I get a vegetarian sampler platter as well and yesterday's was fantastic, the collards were phenomenal. Cannot recommend this restaurant enough!

Absolutely fantastic food in generous portions. The owner made sure we had a lovely time and even brought out a traditional Ethiopian stringed instrument and played a few measures for us. There is a sign that says they offer a vegetarian buffet during the week. No I am a huge fan of Ethiopian food and my only regret is that I’m just passing through and will only have one more chance to eat there again before we leave.

I was visiting Rochester from out of town and stopped in for lunch with another person. We shared the vegetarian platter and had lentil filled Sambusas which are like samosas. The vegetable dishes were the standard ones I've had at every Ethiopian restaurant I have ever eaten at, but they did an excellent job with seasoning and flavor. The veggies were not overcooked at all. I would honestly say they made the best versions I've ever had. The injera seemed authentic to me, made from Teff, not wheat. LOVED the sambusa. Highly recommend the spice tea too.

What a wonderful surprise this restaurant was! The food was absolutely delicious, and the service was superb. It was our first experience with authentic Ethiopian cuisine, and we absolutely loved it! We tried all the selections, and found every one to be uniquely savory, healthy, and prepared with tender loving care. The owners came to our table to chat, and we thoroughly enjoyed meeting them. We put the address in our GPS, and plan to return whenever we are in Rochester. And, oh, I forgot to mention the coffee!! It is shade-grown, direct from Ethiopia, roasted by the owners, and one of the very best we have ever tasted! You won't be disappointed!

I've been to most of the Ethiopian restaurant in Rochester and I have to say that Addis Ababa was so far the best. The restaurant itself is very clean, I liked the decorations on the wall as well as the authentic Ethiopian music. The dishes we had were delicious and nicely presented. They accommodate dietary restrictions, I recommend their food for vegans as well. You may have their amazing coffee that they roast, grind and brew for you right when you order it. All the staff members are super friendly, kind and helpful. You can buy numerous Ethiopian goods at their small store, including spices, coffee, lentils, coffee sets, clothing and handmade scarfs. The restaurant offers a buffet lunch on weekends. Thank you for the great experience.

Amazing food and wonderful Chef and FOH! My husband and I had the Addis Special and our friends had a Chicken dish with a Veggie Platter. Our daughter and her boyfriend invited us to dinner here tonight. It was our first Ethiopian meal but definitely won't be our last. The beef sambusa appetizer was fantastic and deliciously spiced. I have always enjoyed the Vegetarian Buffet on either Saturdays or Sundays. The collard greens are fantastic, and I especially like the cabbage with carrots and the spicy lentil dish. Today there was a beet and potato dish that was so delicious! The dining room is clean, bright, nicely decorated and very comfortable. I was there for breakfast once and I enjoyed the combo dish. Finally, the authentic Ethiopian coffee, made to order, is smooth and flavorful. This is a family owned and run business, and the owners are warm and friendly. This is my favorite Ethiopian Restaurant in Rochester!

The mango juice used real mangoes. It was great. They gave us a lot of injera and it wasn't too fermented. The service was good. Prices are reasonable. The lamb is great. We ordered the vegetarian platter. The dishes were all good. They gave us only one chicken drumstick and one boiled egg on the chicken fir fir dish, and the toilet was freezing cold.

This beautiful restaurant has no faults, even upon close inspection. The owners and staff are incredibly friendly, kind, helpful, and accommodating, and the atmosphere is a lovely mix between a relaxing (yet upbeat), modern ambiance and a traditional experience where one feels transported into the heart of the horn of Africa itself. Addis Ababa Restaurant is the perfect place for curious diners who wish to expand their culinary horizons by indulging in recipes and techniques that are completely authentic, having been invented and passed down in the families and communities of the owners and workers who grew up in Ethiopia themselves. Addis Ababa is also perfect for those with diet restrictions: there are a plethora of Vegetarian, Vegan, and Gluten Free options due to the nature of Ethiopian cuisine, and no diner must sacrifice authenticity or style to accommodate their palate. With decorations, music, recipes, and staff from Traditional Ethiopia, with the modern feel of a familiar coffee bar and alcohol selection, and with the homey touches of a child-friendly, event-ready atmosphere and lounge areas, Addis Ababa Ethiopian Restaurant has only just begun to take the Rochester culinary scene by storm.

This is our favorite restaurant! The food is delicious- we find ourselves craving it often. It is an excellent value- especially if you’re sharing with a group. There are options for everyone. They are considerate of dietary needs and have gone the extra mile to make sure the food is gluten-free for someone with Celiacs. Just make sure to request the gluten-free injera. This is a great place to bring little ones. They welcome our children like family. Our kids are very much at home there. The people are generous and kind. A True Gem in Rochester! Addis Ababa Restaurant is an unforgettable experience — not just a meal. From the moment we walked in, we were welcomed with warmth and genuine hospitality by the wonderful owners, Aden and her husband DJ. Their kindness and passion for sharing Ethiopian culture truly made our visit special. Every single dish we tried was absolutely delicious — rich in flavor, beautifully spiced, and authentically prepared. The traditional coffee ceremony was a highlight: aromatic, comforting, and served with such care that it felt like a cultural journey in itself. We were also captivated by the small store inside, full of traditional Ethiopian products. Each item felt like a piece of heritage, and we loved exploring the shelves. This isn’t just a restaurant — it’s a cultural experience. If you’re in Rochester, don’t miss this place. Thank you, Aden and DJ, for sharing your food and your hearts with your guests!

First Ethiopian Food Experience - Yum! We got their platter special with chicken, lamb, beef, egg, and a few veggies. This was easily enough for 3-4 and we shared it between the two of us for lunch and dinner that day. It was a great way to get to try all the flavors and it was delicious. The chicken (Ethiopian bbq sauce) was my favorite, amazing flavor!

Warm environment, colorful decoration, and delicious food. Meals are generous portions. I had the lamb with vegetables and it’s was tasty and cooked right. Owners are welcoming and sweet. Will go back. Highly recommended.

I've never had Ethiopian food before so this was my first introduction. It was absolutely amazing. They roast their coffee right there. Add a dash of cinnamon to it for some extra good flavor. I haven't had the $15 coffee ceremony, but I intend to. The food itself was second to none. Meat was very tender, spiced to perfection.

The owners are friendly. My salon is across the street so I eat over there on occasion. Only wish they had more side options with the entrees, such as veggies, not just meat and rice. But the food is always good

Had been to their Vegetarian buffet. Food was good though there were only limited options. Friendly staffs and a clean place. Reasonable price, would recommend!

Very relaxed minimalist type of restaurant. Came in here for a quick bite today and had a good experience. The food had really nice soft flavors nothing too crazy. And the portion sizes were very generous for the price you pay. Now when I say soft flavors I do say that because it feels like it wasn't as seasoned as some of the other places that I might have been to out of town like down in DC which is considered the Ethiopian food capital of the states. It's really hard to not come across a really good Ethiopian spot down there. I like my food a little more on the spicier side so I wish that could have been played with a little bit. And maybe it can but I never did ask on the spice level of everything I usually just go with however it is served right off of the menu unless they ask. But the staff was very friendly and attentive to our needs and answered any questions that we had. There is also a store right next door that is part of the restaurant where you can buy spices and such. Overall if you are craving Ethiopian food and you're in the area definitely stop by and give this place a shot.

Good food but the bread are cold. Compared to other Ethiopian Resturant the bread were cold. Good owner but the hostess is 1 so it was not so attentive

Tried this place for special occasion, and they did not disappoint! The injera seemed a little mild when we visited, and the veg sampler was not as spicy as we expected, but everything was still satisfyingly wholesome and hearty and they were not stingy at all with the injera. <3 Upside to the mildness is, it seems safe for parties where any one gots low piquance tolerance. ;) Their veg sampler features six popular wots we see at almost every Ethiopian restaurant we been to: split pea, spicy (but not piquant here) red lentil, collards, cabbage & carrot, green bean & carrot, and big chunky potato. (ater, yemisr, gomen, tikil gomen, fesolia, and dinech) Our party's favo part here was the yemisr wot. One of our party also got one of the cooked beef dishes, and it was also delicious. On our visit on a Saturday evening, staff were real friendly, service was great, and the atmosphere was real mellow and chill. For those traveling by personal vehicle, there is some parking adjacent to the building reserved for patrons, and on our party's visit there was space- but we didn't see painted lines, so we imagine some days it fills inefficiently. We didn't see van accessible space, but other than possibility of parking running out of space for a van, it seems wheelchair-accessible due to lack of steps up or down? The attached store also has some spices we don't yet know where else to find elsewhere locally, like berbere! \o/

Loved the simplicity of the atmosphere. Clean, colorful & tasteful. Food was good & plentiful. Really enjoyed the beef goma. Owners were upbeat, pleasant & happy. I will go surely return.

Excellent and extensive menu and attentive service . Also very quiet and not crowded at all An excellent place for some remarkable and hard to find cuisine . Plenty of parking also .

Very ethnic decorations, which makes you get a feel of Ethiopian culture. However, I think it's understaffed now because mnay things on the menu were not available. I got a lamb dish, and the meat was not heates properly.

I didn’t like it at all and I love Ethiopian food... everything was cold as if they took it out the fridge and warmed it up.. the only good thing was the lentil samosas and the warmed up green beans.. no thank you to this place!

Disclaimer: the owner is very nice, and we’ve been going here for years. I do not want to hurt this business, but I think it is incredibly important to report this— some friends and I went here for dinner this past Saturday, -several food safety issues were present. Firstly, there was a LIVE WORM in our friends glass of water. We then looked into our glasses, and found that all of our waters had large particles floating in it. The owner apologized and brought out a fresh pitcher of water, but at that point we did not trust the safety of it. most of our food was ice cold. I suspect it is prepared in advance and sits out for hours (this was never the case until recently, always freshly cooked) this made us even more concerned. If the water had small critters in it, what would the food contain if it had been sitting out all day? It hurts me to say because I really do like this place and they have always been very kind, but I do not trust the food safety and the quality has gone down hill significantly.

Although the wait staff was friendly, the food here just could not compare to other Ethiopian food I have had. The center of the Sambusa (like a samosa) was still cold, almost frozen... And the food was somewhat bland. Also, the chicken appeared to not be fully cooked, unfortunately did not get the chance to mention it to the server though...

I love Ethiopian food and have had it in other restaurants this was my first time here, the food was horrible. It was not cooked properly, had to throw it out. I ordered from DoorDash and complained to them as well.
