Real gem in the Rosendale area. Came for brunch, the drinks and coffee were great but we especially liked the food. Pancakes we’re a favorite, the style is very unique and unlike any other pancakes i’ve had. The Le Benny and Tartiflette we’re also delicious.
This is a hidden gem! As someone who lived in France for many years I have never had a better croque-monsieur. My friend said the omelette was the best eggs she’d ever eaten and my kids were in love with the giant pancake bigger than their heads (though they only got through 1/4 of it). We’ll be back :)
My boyfriend and I have come to Bistrot le Chat Barbu a few times, and we’ve always had a good experience! It’s nice that there’s seasonality and variety to the menu. On our latest visit, we had the roasted beet/mixed greens salad with cashew cheese, the moules classique, and vegan risotto trapanese. I love that they have some dairy free options that still deliver luscious French flavors; it doesn’t feel like I’m sacrificing anything! (My boyfriend has to avoid dairy and I try to avoid gluten, and there are plenty of options here.) The risotto was really delicious. On past visits I’ve also indulged in dessert, the most memorable of which was a chocolate mousse with fresh whipped cream and peanut brittle. It was one of the best desserts I’ve ever had. We’re so lucky to have this place in town!
Everything tasted amazing! We really enjoyed our meal! All dishes had wonderful French cuisine flavors, were plated well, and the service was friendly and attentive. The fresh warm sourdough bread with roasted garlic + butter to spread on it was $5, as another reviewer pointed out, but it was well worth it. Yes they automatically include a 20% gratituty to give the servers a liveable wage; but honestly folks it's 2025, it's so expensive to live in NY, can you blame them- and who is so cheap that they would tip less than 20% for a great meal/service at a local small business dine-in restaurant anyway?! We had a great experience and will be back! 😋
We had a fantastic Valentine’s dinner at Bistrot le Chat Barbu. The food, drinks service were all on point - and our server Natalee was the best! Une merveilleuse soirée! Merci!
When I learned that there was a French restaurant in a close by town to us (Rosendale) … we had to try it out. Well … this place is so GREAT ! The menu changes seasonally (although we have only gone once) we haven’t seen the other changes that u fold through the year - can’t wait to go again Just to explain briefly the summer menu influence … The Vietnamese adopted and adapted French culinary elements, resulting in a fusion that reflects cultural influences and the unique identity of Vietnamese food. This type of grinch influence food is just FANTASTIC - we were so pleased. We ate the food so fast we didn’t get pictures of the entrées. Got pictures of dessert… which was so GOOD Local as always needs to be supported but it’s even easier when it’s a great local place that’s close to home. We now have a new place to enjoy !!!!!
Wonderful dinner with my wife. Understand that they just opened up and are still working on the finer points. Our waitress was wonderful and attentive. We ate during restaurant week and the pre-fixe menu was well designed and the food was very very good. Looking forward to coming back when we swing by the area soon. So happy to see an upscale restaurant in this cute little town.
Lovely restaurant on Main Street Rosendale NY. Gourmet French cuisine, authentic, yet innovative, fresh & delicious!

Lovely restaurant on Main Street Rosendale NY. Gourmet French cuisine, authentic, yet innovative, fresh & delicious!
What a wonderful treasure in Rosendale! Dinner here was the perfect way to cap off a day of exploring the fall foliage in the Hudson Valley. Everything from the service, food, and cocktails were delightful. We’ll definitely return!
Came here with my partner to celebrate our birthdays and had a truly wonderful meal. Also loved meeting Emma our server and enjoying the fresh focaccia! Thanks so much!
I can't even explain how delicious the food here is. My family went last night, and every single dish blew our minds. The pork schnitzel was so crispy. The half chicken was so tender and tasty. The tapenade and fresh bread was to die for. The chef even made salad taste good. I seriously can't wait to go back, we might even go again tonight. I think it was the best meal I've had in years!
I have been looking forward to trying this restaurant, heard good things and it did not disappoint! Since it’s summer they have focused the menu on a French-influenced lighter Vietnamese cuisine and they did a great job! My husband loved his crepe and I really enjoyed the Manila clams with a light coconut cream sauce. The chocolate cake and pandam panna cotta were delicious and we made it in time for our movie. Service was excellent and attentive and there are a number of restaurants in Rosendale I will NEVER set foot in again because their service is so poor (yes I AM looking at you Soy and Garden Cafe) so that’s high praise from me. Enjoy this lovely cafe, can’t wait to return!
GO! NOW! (Read my review later) Saturday afternoon, we cross the river and head to Rosendale for brunch at the newly opened Bistrot le Chat Barbu. We start with the spinach and gruyere croquettes, a perfect beginning. We move onto the main courses. My husband Noble has the silken Oefs Brouillés with potatoes and toast. I have the Jambon Buerre sandwich on a baguette from Kingston Bread + Bar, with frites on the side. We finish with creme brulee because, well, it's creme brulee for God's sake! If a French restaurant does two things well, roast chicken and creme brulee, you are in good hands. At Le Chat Barbu, you are in great hands! We will be back to work our way through the menu. Give yourself a treat. Tell them Tina in the beret sent you!
Fantastic food! French cuisine made approachable and not intimidating. I have eaten here twice already and the food was stellar both times. The passion and care the chef has towards food translates to the plate in a truly enjoyable dining experience. Not to mention the stellar staff who is on point and clearly excited to be there.
We were passing through town and enjoyed Sunday brunch very much. The French onion soup was one of the best ever.
This place is very special. I have been four times now, and each meal has transported me to a different French region -- most recently, the Pyrenees. Their HV Restaurant Week menu, once again, did not disappoint. I had the vegan Mounjetado, which is traditionally a rural bean and meat stew, and my husband had the Coq au Vin Juane, which I believe was made with wine from the Jura region. We were both thrilled with the our selections. Oh, and the chocolate bread pudding was enormous! And delicious! The chef knows what he's doing, and takes the time to look out from the kitchen window to see how diners are enjoying their meals. His seriousness and passion -- for all kinds of French dishes -- is evident! And the high-ceiling yet cozy ambiance is a welcome addition to Rosendale. Some may be inclined to make reservations at another certain French restaurant in Ulster County, but in my opinion there is no comparison. Le Chat Barbu for the win.
CATERING SWOON ALERT!! We held our 2025 Staff Holiday party here, and it was a FIVE STAR experience every step of the way! Chef Devin was easy to communicate with, understood what we were looking for, and exceeded expectations the night of the event with excellent food, drinks, and service. He even handled some dietary restriction requests that we introduced late in the planning with aplomb, not only accommodating our guests, but making sure those selections were of the same terrific quality as the rest of the choices. If you are looking for a restaurant where the owner is hands on and cares about every detail, you have found your gem! Le Chat Barbu est magnifique!

I know 5 star is bit excessive but as an new business and in a small town I wasn’t expecting decent food that’s why I am giving 5⭐️! stake was grate, French toast was amazing, duck was well balanced. It’s a big place and feels bit empty when you get in and that’s probably why my expectations were low, but I was proven wrong 👍

Bistrot le Chat Barbu is an absolute gem in Rosendale—an authentic taste of France with a refreshingly creative twist. Chef Delgado’s menu expertly blends classic French techniques with vibrant, unexpected flavors, producing dishes that are both comforting and innovative. Each plate felt thoughtfully crafted, showcasing impeccable attention to detail and exceptional ingredient quality. Standouts included perfectly executed classics that felt familiar yet delightfully unique, the duck leg confit was subliminal, the gnocchi bolognese finto made with a cashew cream "ricotta" is incredible. The atmosphere is cozy, intimate, and effortlessly chic, making every dining experience feel special. Service was warm, attentive, and knowledgeable, demonstrating genuine passion. A must-visit for anyone seeking exceptional French-inspired dining in the Hudson Valley. Will absolutely post more pictures as we go back for more.

Was anxious to try Le Chat Barbu, which I did during restaurant week. The prix fixe menu ($39.99) offered the typical 3-course dinner experience, which was varied and thought out. While my wife found her meal mostly memorable, I found the night more hit and miss. The pork rillette platter was fine but undistinguished. The moule frites were a surprising disappointment. The mussels were well cooked but the broth was thin and lacking in flavor -- with no notes of wine, garlic, herbs, cream, etc. normally associated with a broth that one usually looks forward to sopping up with bread (Bread was $5 extra). My wife's boeuf bourguinon was tasty but uninspired and plated unappetizingly. The French onion soup was good but the deep beef broth flavor was a tad lacking. The two dessert offerings were fine. Things will undoubtedly be enhanced when the restaurant obtains a liquor license. The note on the menu automatically adding 20% to give the staff "a living wage" might raise a few eyebrows. Willing to give LCB a second chance

La Chat. Appropriately named. We decided to venture away from La Carnard in Kingston to try the new French Bistro in Rosendale. That was a bad idea. We started with the bread plate. We ordered the whipped ricotta, mushrooms and butter. The bread was bland, definitely store bought, and a low effort attempt. The mushrooms were good. I ordered a small risotto and a French Soup. Undoubtedly, the worst French Onion soup I’ve ever had. The broth was very wine heavy, watery, and unseasoned. The onions were too sweet and the overall flavor profile was just unappealing. My girlfriend got the steak frites, ordered medium rare. The steak came out well, the frites were out of the frozen food section at Topps and the presentation was poor. The risotto was inedible. To their credit, we had 1-2 bites of our meals and expressed our dissatisfaction - we offered to pay, yet they refused, apologized and we left. The restaurant was virtually empty at 6:45PM on a warm Friday night. I can see why. The ambience was uninspiring, and the overall experience was La chat…and not in a good way. If you want to experience excellent French Food, go to La Canard. May I suggest that the La chat chefs go to learn what properly prepared French cuisine tastes and looks like. Highly disappointing experience.
Please do not lie about how food is prepared 😥 I got two sides of what were supposed to be roasted potatoes. Unfortunately, they appeared to be deep fried, which I can't have due to stomach issues. I called to confirm and the woman I spoke to was kind but said she confirmed with the chef they weren't deep fried. Then I check the other box and find a french fry with them that smells the exact same, and had the same consistency, thus confirming they were indeed deep fried. It's a very lazy practice to deep fry roasted potatoes, so that in and of itself is a problem. But to lie about it is reckless, especially when I explained I needed to know because of a health issue. I hate wasting food but now these need to be thrown out. Please please don't lie about how food is prepared as certain people have specific allergies or medical conditions that limit what they can eat. My issue causes pain and discomfort but some people can have serious reactions when they are lied to about things like this. Please be honest in the future.
