Nice service excellent Tacos 🌮 👌 even better during happy hour 😋. Nice friendly family atmosphere during the lunch time middle of the week. I enjoyed my Tacos and you can taste the love and art put into it. Had to drive around the block a couple of times before I found a parking spot. They also have a parking spot next to the restaurant behind.
Wow. Had the daily special - the Chili Colorado. Talk about exceptional. The meat was incredibly flavorful and cooked perfectly. The sauce was beautiful. Came back for some tacos and, though I can't say they were as good as my previous meal, they were still very good. And moderately priced for the size of them. Really want to come back and try the mole which I believe was the special on Fridays (the Chili Colorado was the special on Thursday). And an excellent Michelada as well! Super compliment to a super meal.
Best tequila and mezcal bar selection in San Diego (possibly the United States actually), they have relationships with many distilleries that are small batch. Go for Tuesdays or Fridays for their special in house made Mole. Tacos are great too, been coming here for 14 years and highly recommend as one of my top suggestions in San Diego.
Cantina Mayahuel is one of those places where the atmosphere hits you before the food does, in the best way. The bar is absolutely gorgeous, with a warm, cozy vibe that makes you want to settle in and stay awhile. They also handled our large party with ease and style, which made the evening that much better. We started with chips and guacamole, and they were unforgettable. The guac had that perfect balance of creamy texture and bright acidity, the kind of freshness that makes you go back for “just one more” scoop again and again. The pico and Serrano served with it added a punchy, addictive bite that made the whole plate impossible to stop eating. The chips themselves were crisp, warm, and fresh — easily some of the best chips and guac we’ve ever had. For drinks, the margaritas were vibrant and well-balanced, and the Jamaica tequila was smooth, floral, and fun to sip. When it came to food, every taco delivered. The chicken tacos stood out with juicy meat topped in a rich, silky crema that brought everything together. The carnitas were incredible — juicy and deeply flavorful, with just the right amount of crispness on the edges and a freshness that made every bite rich without being heavy. The carne asada was tender and bold, full of that classic grilled flavor. The ceviche tasted bright and exceptionally fresh. Beautiful drinks, cozy atmosphere, truly delicious food, and thoughtful service. Cantina Mayahuel gets everything right, and we’ll absolutely be back.
This place deserves a 5 star for the happy hour alone! My fave are the steak tacos. The guac & salsa is delicious and love the seranos that come with it…such a nice touch. Definitely recommend this place. Mezcal margaritas are also 10/10
Highly recommend getting one of the specials! The Wednesday garlicky shrimp was amazing. The margaritas are perfect! The tacos ~could~ be SO good if they used better tortillas. The tortillas they use are the store bought corn fall apart kind of tortillas. Everything else is so good it’s surprising they don’t use better tortillas
SOME OF THE BEST MEXICAN FOOD & tequila! I’ve come here numerous times and always come back because I can’t get enough of their yummy food and drinks. They started with a small hole in the wall spot and have expanded to a covered patio bar as well for more room (which means more space to eat, drink, and be merry!) Now I’m not big on tequila but if you are this is your spot! They have a huge array of different types of tequila and the bartenders are very knowledgeable about them to help you pick the one you’ll like. I almost always order carnitas tacos with rice and beans (can’t get enough of it!) except for when I make it in for the seafood stew. The seafood stew is a MUST try, one of my favorite things I’ve probably ever tasted (and I eat a lot). The seafood is fresh the broth is both refreshing and spicy, so so good! You obviously can’t come here and not have some margaritas to wash down your food! They also have a happy hour! I’ll always continue to come here!
Great find and recommendation from some local friends. There is indoor and outdoor seating. Its was a little chilly so we sat at the inside bar and did not regret it. The tequila selection was great and the bartenders we're very knowledgeable. Definitely try the house made tequila. The food was unexpectedly great. Looking at the menu was just the normal mexican fair but the tacos were outstanding.
Stopped here for lunch on a Saturday and I was very impressed! Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the tequilas on the menu and made us the best margaritas we’ve ever had. So fresh with smooth, perfect tequila, and at $9.50 each you can’t beat it! The food was also amazing (get carnitas and the chicken tacos!) everything tasted so good I couldn’t decide what my favorite was! Something unique they have there is the Yucatan seafood stew every Saturday, which I feel so lucky that I got to eat! It was such a cozy dish, with very unique flavors (pineapple, cumin, etc), and the seafood was so fresh. Overall this is a place with great food, an extensive collection of tequila, and unbeatable prices. You have to check it out!
Great place with a unique vibe that serves outstanding margaritas!! Smoky mezcal margarita with Jamaica juice is amazing 😍 also good quality guacamole with chips and pico de gallo. However, the quality of the tacos was sub par, not even decent. The fish was super dry and tasteless. Carne asada was on the drier side as well. If they were to improve on the quality of their tacos this place could be bomb!
The atmosphere was great, covered outdoor seating. It was very comfortable. The tequila and mezcal selection was amazing, however, they should be enjoyed by themselves as their cocktails are bland. The food was average at best, portions were small for the guys in our group. Some of them ate again afterwards. We ordered chips and guacamole, the portion was small, even on the chips. No salsa per se, they serve pica de gallo, not spicy. They also have a habanero water salsa in a plastic bottle they pass around. I ordered the steak plate, the steak was tender and I enjoyed the meal, but it was very basic. Salsa would have been nice. Service was mediocre. I’m glad we checked it out, but I won’t return.
Stopped by on a week day. Was excited to try the mezcal margaritas. Ordered both flavors they have to offer - the original & Jamaica. Super duper disappointed :,( Decided to give the mezcal flight a try. That was a good choice. Should’ve done that instead of ordering the cocktails. Oh well! My favorite out of the 3 was hands down “Sierra Negra”.
Located in the vibrant University Heights area of San Diego, Cantina Mayahuel offers a taste of Mexico with its charming ambiance and lively bar. Let’s dive into the details: Atmosphere and Charm: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ The restaurant exudes a cozy, rustic vibe, complete with colorful tiles and wooden accents. It’s the kind of place where you can kick back, enjoy a drink, and soak in the Mexican spirit. Bar Delights: 🍻🥃 The bar at Cantina Mayahuel is a highlight. With an impressive selection of tequilas and a variety of beers, it’s a great spot for unwinding after a long day. Whether you’re sipping a margarita or opting for a cold cerveza, the bar won’t disappoint. The Food: 🌮🦐 Ceviche: Not bad at all! The tangy, citrus-marinated seafood is refreshing, especially on a warm San Diego day. The balance of flavors is commendable. Beef Tacos: Unfortunately, these didn’t hit the mark. The beef was lackluster, and the overall flavor fell short. San Diego sets high standards for Mexican cuisine, and Cantina Mayahuel didn’t quite meet them. Final Verdict: While Cantina Mayahuel has its moments of charm and decent offerings, it falls short in terms of food quality. If you’re seeking an authentic Mexican culinary experience, you might want to explore other options in San Diego. Remember, taste is subjective, and what one person finds mediocre, another might adore. So, if you’re in the mood for a laid-back evening with good drinks and a dash of Mexican flair, Cantina Mayahuel could still be worth a visit. 🌮🍹
It does seem like my experience isn't the norm here but my experience was shockingly poor. Our group of 6 left a pop up show to grab a bite here. We showed up at 9:20, but they are open to 10 and we even asked if the kitchen was cool with it. We ordered right away though since they said they do last call at 930. All of us ordered right away. When the server delivered the food only 2 out of 6 meals came out and she acted like that was it. When we re ordered they kind of made a stink, and then forgot 2 meals again!! And refused to finish the order. Not really apologetic, eventually comped 1 meal, and was just unacceptable service. Food that came was good though. Weirdest thing, the manager Jorge at the end was very defensive about the situation. We were patient with the first mess up, doing it twice and not caring is annoying. The manager said a few times "the food you did get was good though." Unhinged response. Probably won't be back, which is a shame as the food was good, because of the management and service.
I've been here once. And won't go back. The latino bartender is a jerk. Dude thinks he's gods gift to bartending or sumn. Relax bro, it's just a bar, you ain't famous. The food is average at best. Fun ambiance except for the short Latino guy in his mid 40s.
Looked online to find a quick taco place with street tacos to bring back to the office. I found this place and decided to give it a try. The owner wouldn’t let me order them to go. Happy hour only, dine in only. It was 1pm on a Tuesday. No logic. No customer service. Ridiculous. Avoid this place like the plague.
