Having called San Diego home for over a decade, my wife and I have explored nearly every sushi spot in town. Sushi Ota remains the gold standard for us, with downtown’s Taka a very close second. What sets Ota apart is their precision. The shari (rice) is perfectly seasoned, and the fish-to-rice ratio is generous—you’ll never feel like the rice is overshadowing the fish. If it’s your first visit or you're feeling indecisive, the Chef’s Choice Nigiri is a flawless pick. I also highly recommend the non-spicy Double-Double Yellowtail cut roll; it’s consistently amazing. For milestone celebrations, their multi-course Omakase is a traditional Japanese journey that is as filling as it is delicious. Pro-tips for your visit: Reservations: Absolutely essential for dining in. Takeout: For those evening you want to enjoy a night in or forgot to make a reservation and cannot get a table. Parking: The front lot is tight, but don’t forget the extra spaces around the back.

Well…… not much to look at from the outside but looks can be deceiving and it was cause they hit it out of the park. We ordered 4 rolls and every one was on point!!!!! Service was excellent. We went for birthday dinner well worth the 80 miles…. FYI it is reservations recommend, they opened at 5 and EVERY TABLE was full by 5:15 (that says a lot) Enjoy…. Todd

Some of the best sushi I’ve ever had. Ordered the tuna and smoked salmon maki. Simple stuff where you can really taste the fish. The rolls were bigger than expected. The smoked salmon and tuna melted in my mouth. The salmon was out of this world delicious. They were able to squeeze us in at the bar without a reservation. The vibe was very nice as well. Whenever I’m back to San Diego I’m definitely hitting this spot again.

Sushi Ota …we love it here. The food is superb and honestly reminds us of the caliber of cuisine you come to expect in Japan. Great service, a lively atmosphere, and a really nice variety on the menu. 🍣✨

This the best authentic sushi spot in San Diego, no contest. My wife and I have tried many in the SD metro area and Sushi Ota consistently stays at the top of the list. Their fish is fresh, perfectly prepared, and the staff is wonderful. The price is definitely on the higher side but the quality matches what you’re paying for. I’ve eaten here/taken out 4 times and I’m always happy with my meal. The Tokusen Nigiri is my go to.

We went on a Thursday night not thinking we'd need a reservation but it was busy! We were told it could potentially be a few hour wait so we started to leave but then thought that we could order takeout. Went back in to confirm and grabbed a menu and order sheet and took it back in. Arisa then told me a table was close to leaving so if we wanted to wait maybe 15 minutes she would be able to seat us! 🙌🏻 Chizuka was our server and she was great too! Everyone was kind, food was good and price was reasonable for the quality of food and service! Would definitely consider coming back if we are in the San Diego area again! どうもありがとうございます!

Food is excellent; service was friendly and attentive throughout the meal. A higher priced place but definitely worth it for special occasions! Highly recommend! Note it’s highly recommended to have a reservation, otherwise you may not get a table. Parking is pretty limited out front but has more in the back if you go up Bunker Hill Street about a half block and turn in towards the restaurant ( the direction depends upon where you’re coming from).

No words could even begin to describe the experience and the taste- it’s just incomparable. We ordered both nigiri and sashimi- including but not exclusive to uni, otoro, kirodai, torched gindara, and the chef’s choice sampler! Everything was fresh to taste and sooo top tier! Kaz was very personable and his team was fun and friendly! 10/10 highly recommend. No pictures. Just present, grateful, and fully living in the moment.

Sushi Ota is hands down one of the best sushi spots in San Diego. The fish is as fresh as it gets—everything tastes clean, perfectly prepared, and high quality. You can really tell how much care goes into each piece. Parking can be tough and it gets busy quickly, so making a reservation is highly recommended, but it’s absolutely worth the effort. A must-visit if you’re serious about great sushi.

The best grilled yellowtail (hamachi kama) I ever had. The sushi and everything else are good too! They also provide gluten free sauce and separate all sushi between GF and non-GF in two plates for us - very considerable.

I'd heard many recommendations about this place, and finally got to try it last night for our anniversary. highly recommend. the food was delicious, the service was wonderful. Loved the Black Pepper Scallop Roll! and the red bean ice cream was wonderful. This restaurant is definitely going to enter the date night rotation. Best sushi I've had in San Diego for sure! The staff is also knowledgeable about allergens.

Fantastic place with fresh fish and the whole deal. I think the phrase "no frills" is overused but I will use it today. Also nice to get out of the city and have a great meal. I recommend it and the excuse can be the quality of the food, which is much better than anything you can get downtown or on Coronado IMO.

Sushi Ota still the best food ever!!!! Every bite is like heaven, the ingredients quality simply excellent. Everyone is super friendly, they receive us with a big smile. Make a Reservation in advance. Each option on the menu is a good choice. I came the first time 15(ish) years ago, you will always leave with a happy smile of good food and happy tummy. The ambience is beautiful, nice and warm. For us, it worth the 3 hours drive to SD!

Sushi Ota is our go-to spot for high-quality sushi when we’re in the San Diego area. During our last trip in June, we made sure to include this restaurant in our dinner plans, and it definitely did not disappoint! We tend to order a lot of nigiri here, as the cuts are always fresh, with many pieces featuring extra-long slices of fish that drape over the rice. On this visit, we ordered three servings of scallop (hotate) nigiri and several other duplicates. I always make a point to order ama ebi, one of my favorites. This time, we took an Uber to fully enjoy their excellent selection of sake, which isn’t readily available at many places we visit in Arizona. We enjoyed a bottle with dinner, which elevated the entire meal. If you love sushi and don’t mind splurging, the bill here can add up quickly. However, having dined at many sushi restaurants, Sushi Ota stands out as a top choice and is well worth the premium price.

I can hardly conjure words befitting of such a perfect establishment. Hands-down, the most meticulously crafted sushi my husband and I have had in the States. We are foodies, and love to seek the best-o-the-best and happily found ourselves here, sitting at the sushi bar, being served by the INCREDIBLE Head Chef, Yoko! We were there celebrating our 11th marriage anniversary and are truly grateful for such an awe-inspiring experience! Every single dish was absolute perfection. Seemingly simple but you know there is an immense amount of care that goes into each piece you savor. Even our hostess was perfect in every way. The attention to detail, the care, the kindness, and hospitality exuded with genuine pride, by all the staff. We seriously can't wait to come back. I love this place. It's a wonderful gift to those who come. Please do!

So good so fresh. Seeing from outside you can’t say how amazing this place is, everything is so clean, fresh and amazing. Price is very fair for the quality they serve. You must try it but make sure to make your reservation they’re always busy.

OMG!! It’s my birthday today so I decided to visit here after suuuper long time! The food was still amazing and they even gave me a surprise dessert for my birthday. Totally worth the price! I had such a special time with my hubby. Plus our server explained each of the Chef’s Special Nigiri one by one she was super professional and so nice! Thank you!

Absolutely amazing sushi experience. Start off with the calamari, which was end of itself one of the best parts in the meal. Then got the clam miso soup, which actually had a great clam flavor. And got the Nigiri plus the upgraded California roll with the Alaskan King crab, which is an absolute must. Also got the crispy salmon rolls, which were fantastic, but with the rest of the meal was actually the low point, but only because the rest of the meal was phenomenal. Was not quite as expensive as I expected to be either. This is a must if you are in San Diego.

One-liner: hole in the wall japanese restaurant with true Japanese sushi chefs who serve some of the best sushi I’ve ever tasted Parking: very small lot shared with multiple stores so try parking on the streets nearby or behind the behind the building Atmosphere: unassuming store front but once you walk in you are transported to a nice but not intimidating Japanese restaurant Service: very attentive and accommodating Food: - appetizer: calamari has a light crisp but with so much flavor. I highly recommend it - deluxe chirashi bowl: includes toro besides a variety of other dishes and roe. I order it every time I go. - snow crab California roll: real snow crab. Great for those wanting to try sushi but prefer not to eat raw fish. It is also a must to try - teriyaki chicken: simple plating with juicy chicken in a light teriyaki sauce. If you cannot eat raw stuff this can work but the highlight of this place is their raw foods Tip: want to try this place without breaking the bank, try their lunch special on the days (which is not everyday) when they are open for lunch.

Sushi Ota is clearly one of the most popular sushi spots in town, and for good reason. The restaurant has a refined, intimate atmosphere. Reservation is highly recommended as they get very busy and usually has a wait line. All the sushi chefs are Japanese, which adds a level of authenticity and tradition that’s reflected in both the preparation and presentation of the food. Service here is top notch! Friendly, attentive, and professional. The presentation of each dish is elegant, and the quality of the fish is great. With that said, I found the prices to be significantly higher than other sushi restaurants, in some cases nearly double. While the food is definitely high quality, I personally felt that the overall value didn’t quite justify the cost. I’m not here to bash the place. I’m just giving my honest perspective. I know what great sushi tastes like, and while Sushi Ota delivers in many areas, the price to quality ratio left me a bit underwhelmed. Still, it was an amazing experience, and I’d recommend it to anyone who’s looking to enjoy authentic sushi in a more upscale setting. Just be prepared for the premium pricing.

We really enjoyed the food everything was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. The hostess at the entrance was extremely kind and welcoming, which gave us a great first impression. However, the service from our waitress was disappointing. She was impatient, unhelpful, and seemed rushed the entire time. She couldn’t recommend anything from the menu, and if we took even two seconds to decide, she made us feel like we were holding her back. It was uncomfortable and definitely not the level of service we expected, especially considering how good the food was.😔

I was really excited about this place. My dear fiancée and I chose Sushi Ota as our last date night before our wedding, and the fish was fresh, but so was our disappoinment. Read on, my fellow Google Maps wanderer. Atmosphere Nice but not 'I absolutely need to dress up' nice. This is a good date night spot, and I don't know if I'd rather a friend here. Good for up to 4 people, but if it's one-on-one, it might feel romantic. Is that what you want? Romance? Service Good. Not amazing, not awful. Good, to the extent that you don't think about it much, which may be ideal. Food Started off with three assorted tempura, which was a good choice. It was two shrimp, two green beans, a sweet potato, a zucchini, and an onion. Also had the spicy tuna on eggplant tempura. Good, with a generous portion of spicy tuna. I got the deluxe chirashi. The fish was good, but the rice was a little hard and the unagi was chewy. Disappointing. Recommend? I hesitate to.
