Ate too fast to take any cute photos - sorry - but that should tell you everything. Food is BLOW YOUR MIND incredible. For my native San Franciscans, we have access to some of the best food options from basically any cuisine imaginable, but as far as Thai food goes THIS is the place to eat and you will tearfully thank me once you try. Food comes out laser fast (which concerned me at first) but the meal had me eating with my hands to get every last morsel by the end. If you read this review and you’re not already heading over idk what to tell you. $18 for the best Khao Soi you’ll ever have - you’re welcome.
how this spot doesn’t have higher reviews idk. every single dish i’ve had from here was a hit. duck curry and tom kha soup are sooo so yummy, and the portions are large! the vibe is late night, they have drinks, and unique menu items. the service is quick and attentive
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5 I was visiting San Francisco for just a few hours and decided to stop into Ben-Thai since it was right around the corner from my hotel—and I’m so glad I did! From the moment I walked in, I was warmly greeted and seated at the bar. Service was on point—my order was taken right away, my food came out hot and fast, and my water was refilled constantly without me even asking. I ordered the fried prawns and the drunken noodles with duck (added an egg on top), and everything was absolutely delicious. The flavors were bold, fresh, and perfectly spiced. I asked for extra heat, and they had a great variety of spices to kick it up to just the right level. Special shoutout to my server, Yin, who provided outstanding service and made the experience even better. Overall, this place is a 10/10—great food, fast service, and a welcoming vibe. I’ll definitely be back next time I’m in San Francisco!
We found Ben Thai Cafe because we were in the area, it seemed interesting to us so we decided to stop by, the service when we arrived was not the friendliest, the gentleman who served us was a bit rude and you feel pressured to order your food. The food was undoubtedly wonderful, the dishes we ordered were very tasty and had a great flavor, we ordered rice with shrimp and pineapple and salmon bathed in coconut milk, I don't remember the names of the dishes but I recommend that you try any of them since apparently none of them will disappoint you, on the other hand at the end to pay the bill they add 15% or 18% which seems like an exaggeration to me 😬 In general the restaurant fulfills the mission of providing delicious food.
Wonderful, well prepared, and delicious Thai food, fast friendly service, and comfortable inviting surroundings. Lunch specials are an absolute bargain, and the portions are just right for individual meals. The food is served especially fast, so if you're in a hurry, this is a good bet.
Amazing birthday dinner. First time we try Ben Thai even though we leave 5min from there, we will definitely go back. The service, food and ambiance are perfect. My husband ordered a chicken peanut sauce meal and I got the salmon avocado curry. It totally hit the spot, really tasty. The avocado was melting with the sauce and perfectly paired with the salmon. For dessert, we shared their new lava cake with ice cream and strawberries. It comes from U Dessert in the mission and it is absolutely fantastic.
Delicious Thai restaurant in no frill but relaxing vibe. Service was AMAZING with food coming out quickly, big portion, and tasty. Our favorite was Pork of Heaven and Larb Duck which is really unique and different from other Thai restaurants. Good cocktail selection to choose from. A good Thai spot in town and good for all types of group!
Amazing place the food is just great and very tasty. Location is great right on park street easy to get to I can't hear with my girlfriend. We had a coconut curry with rice and cheese. Or the noodles would be a little bit spicy was amazing. We have a tie beer and enter up our dinner with the coconut fried planting dish, a perfect cherry on top of the cake highly recommended if you are anywhere near oak street.
I ordered the gra-prow fried rice with chicken ($17.50) and extra portion of pork ($3.50). Food came out in 10-15 minutes hot and fresh. The rice was more on the wet side but the flavor was super. I added a bunch of chili powder to it for more authenticity and it was just right. I do wish there were more cucumbers to balance the flavor. The runny egg was a nice touch. Portion size was alright with a good amount of chicken and pork pieces.
Was looking for a Thai place in the downtown SF area and ran into this place. We ordered the Calamari, House Fried Rice w/ Beef, Fried Chicken and Spring Rolls to go. The Spring Rolls did not include any noodles, which I found interesting. Would not recommend ordering the Spring Rolls, however everything else we ordered was good, especially the Fried Rice. Prices are reasonable.
Opted to try Ben Thai because of the numerous options not typically found in other places. Street parking, although not the safest of areas, was relatively easy on a weekend. The food came out quick which was appreciated since we were quite hungry. The staff was friendly and attentive and offered strong recommendations. I ordered the Khao Soi Deluxe with Oxtail. That dish wasn’t what I expected. The soup was creamy and sweet with a slight kick to it. The egg noodles were chewy enough. And the fried noodles and pork skin gave additional texture to the dish. But the oxtail pieces were IMO the star of the show. They were roasted, tender, and so flavorful. I would definitely come back just for this meal. The rest of the dishes we ordered were good but just average. But we have to try more of their specials probably. There is a Yelp check-in offer for 50% off non-alcoholic drinks. The aesthetics of the place was nice and the bathroom was also nice and clean.
I love me a good Thai restaurant, and this was not it. Or maybe it was the dish, I'll go back and try something else. I do give restaurants second chances. I ordered the roasted duck red curry. The duck was mostly skin and fat, which I hate. Flavor was great. Appetizers were great as well as the service. I have to go back and try something else.
The reviews drew me in but I didn't like the pad Thai at all. It was just sugar, no flavor. Tasted like ketchup. Had to ask for more lime to cut the sweetness but it didn't really help. Although it says this is a popular dish, I doubt it. It came very fast though. I also noticed worse reviews in the past 1 year. Something might have changed. Maybe other options like curries are better - trying to give them benefit of doubt here. I did mention it to them and they said that's authentic Thai but I've had it at other places and that's not the same.
Honestly the food was mid, 4/10. They charge an extra 18% mandatory for parties of 4 or more people plus a mysterious service fee that was about 20% extra??? Owner refused to let us split more than 2 cards despite the menu saying they can accept up to 3 cards per bill. Owner refused to change tip from 18% to something more reasonable like 15%. The server was a nice younger woman. Owner is a sassy older man. After all this rigamarole, they had the gaul to ask for an additional tip. If we were not paying attention or not native english speakers we could have easily missed this. Shady practices, rude people, ok food, relatively good ambience, but not even that good food especially for the area. I strongly don't recommend it especially for San Francisco there are tons more better and more authentic thai places nearby just walk another 5 minutes in either direction.
Food was okay, but a bit too salty for my taste. The menu says a table can split payment across up to three cards, but when we asked, they refused and had a very bad attitude. They also insisted on an 18% tip, saying it was stated on the menu and could not be changed. The machine even prompted us to add an additional tip on top of the mandatory 18%.
I just paid $26.73 for one tofu green curry through Grubhub. Delivery was fast, but that’s the only good part of this experience. When I opened the bag, I realized there was no rice. I went back on the app to see if I had missed a dropdown or option to add it—nothing. Not a single mention that rice doesn’t come with curry. This is misleading. Thai curry (or in fact, any curry in the world) without rice or some kind of carb to balance the flavors makes no sense, yet the restaurant doesn’t bother to clarify this anywhere. I called to confirm, and was bluntly told, “No, rice doesn’t come with it.” No apology, no explanation. Just attitude. For the price, the least they could do is provide a complete meal—or at the very least be upfront about it. Still, I tried to make the best of it. After two bites, I found a bug on the cabbage. At that point, the entire meal went in the trash. Completely unacceptable. This was supposed to be a simple Sunday treat, and instead it was frustrating, disappointing, and frankly gross. I won’t be ordering here again, and I’d strongly caution others before wasting money the same way.
