I visited on 12/29 and was assisted by Victoria immediately. She was enthusiastic, friendly and engaged. The restaurant was packed and there was a long line. I placed a takeout and because I already had a list of what I was going to order, the whole process was seamless and efficient. If you planning for dine in, reservation is highly recommended. I ordered lemongrass porchop, shanking beef and faux luc lac. All with good portions and delicious, the temperature was excellent as well as the presentation… highly recommended,
I’ve been to La Bodega more than seven times, and it has never disappointed me. The food is consistently delicious, the atmosphere is welcoming, and the service is always excellent. Every visit feels just as good as the first one. It’s one of those places you can rely on every single time. Highly recommended — I’ll definitely keep coming back.
We've been eagerly waiting for our lunch reservation since a while. This place is very popular and busy, making a reservation (OpenTable) far in advance seems like a must. Chef Billy Ho opened this brick and mortar place in 2022, serving high quality traditional Vietnamese fine dining in a casual environment. We arrived at 11:30am and the restaurant was packed already. Very friendly, welcoming, and helpful staff at front desk, usher and waiter. Handicap access from sidewalk through the side door of the adjacent hotel lobby. A vibrant place with various table, booth, and high chair seatings. No wait due to our reservation and seated immediately. Started with great cocktails while scanning the simple but excellent menu. Great explanations and recommendations from our waiter. Given the wonderful memories from our recent Vietnam travel, we ordered 4 dishes (finally ended up with 2 plates to go ;)). Served within a few minutes, very fast given how busy the restaurant was). Nicely plated, big portions. Delicious, tasty, high quality staple food. Very yummy!!! Given the high prices in the city and the bay area, this place is rather affordable and has an excellent ratio of quality / size and price. Obviously not as cheap as in Vietnam itself. Highest recommendation, best Vietnamese place we have tested. Definitely will be back! Miles & Points tip: you can use your CSR Tables credit or use your Amex Gold for 4x points
Came early for lunch (11am) with reservation. Limited seatings and not good with large groups. All tables/booths are reserved most of the time. Walk-ins will definitely have to wait for quite some time. Ambience: modern / contemporary establishment serving quality Vietnamese traditional food. Their Bun Cha is a must try; quite pricey but it was 'heaven'. Some of the grilled sliced pork (bacon?) were charred beyond edible (burnt and chewy); kitchen quality control definitely need more training. Side Note: though it is listed under apptizer, it could be an individual dish or for sharing as well. The Lemongrass Wings (6 pieces) is on the sweet side. It came with nuoc mam dipping on the side tho, to get your tasty level. Yummy and a must try. The Spring roll can be made with either Shrimp, Nem Nuong or Tofu. The shrimp spring roll was so-so; nothing special. Shaking Beef was awesome! Though the portion is small, they used high-quality beef. Not chewy, very tender, just melt in your mouth. Come with choices of garlic noodle or steam white rice. The white rice we had was too dry and not fluffy. I think they can use more water when cooking the rice. The Beef Pho was generous in portion and the meats were thick and large sliced. They didnt skimp you on it. Didn't I mention their beef a high quality one? The broth though... umm need to be served more steaming hot. It came out warm and lacking the authentic pho taste. It did not came with beansprout/ jalapeno slices/basil leaves/lemon as in other pho establishments. Upon request, they provides lime or lemon juice on the side. Despite sprinkling the lime juice, failed to bring out the pho taste. So I wouldn't recommend ordering it if you are craving Pho. Had Vietnamese iced coffee as well. Came out already mixed/stirred. Strong coffee. Again was on the sweet side. Maybe next time we can mention for less condensed milk?. Overall, would like to return and try the different dishes. Lunch menu is very limited. Perhaps will try to go dinner time. Server/staff are all well trained and checking on our table many times despite being busy lunch hour.
The tasting menu was amazing and I genuinely loved every dish. We got so full that we couldn’t even finish the pho. I usually eat a lot and I still couldn’t get through the last few bites of the final course. The drink was great, and all the appetizers and small bites were really well done.
Dined here for lunch with my colleagues recently since I’ve been wanting to try this place and it was great! Our reservation was at 11:30a and by then, they had a couple of customers. Since it was earlier in the day, service was slower, but that’s to be expected as they start their day. We decided to order two appetizers: banh cuon & grilled lemongrass wings. My colleagues ordered the dry noodles, pho and I had the lemongrass pork chops and sub garlic noodles for rice (which was the move). We were all happy with our orders & would definitely return!
Bodega SF is hands down one of the best Vietnamese restaurants I’ve experienced in the Bay Area. The moment you walk in, the atmosphere feels vibrant yet relaxed — warm lighting, modern décor, and an energy that strikes the perfect balance between upscale and comfortable. It’s the kind of place where every detail feels intentional, from the presentation to the music selection. The food absolutely exceeded expectations. The Bún Chả Hà Nội was the standout — beautifully grilled pork with that perfect smoky char, paired with fresh herbs and vermicelli noodles that brought all the flavors together. It was so good I ended up ordering another portion to go! Every dish felt thoughtfully executed, from the oysters topped with roe to the beef carpaccio — each bite layered with balance and depth. Service was attentive without being overbearing, and the pacing of the meal made it easy to enjoy every dish at its best. You can tell the kitchen puts a lot of pride into both authenticity and presentation. Bodega SF nails what an elevated Vietnamese dining experience should be: familiar comfort food elevated with precision and creativity. This is easily a place I’ll keep coming back to — and one I’d recommend to anyone who appreciates exceptional food and atmosphere done right. Additionally, there’s close by parking on mason its $25.
This restaurant is quite fancy in the town. The food here is really good and presented in a very fancy manner. You might find it a little bit pricey but the portion sizes are quite large and it’s a good experience if you go with your friends or your workmates. I personally liked the lamb chops a lot, but everything is really good and has a very unique take on Vietnamese food.
From the moment you walk in, you know it's going to be special! The ambiance is sleek, modern, and so nice. Highly recommend to make a reservation to avoid taking a chance. The staffs are all so friendly and attentive, which is always appreciated. Now, let's talk about their drinks - love the use of Asian inspired flavors like pandan, mango, Jasmine, chrysanthemum, etc. All of their drinks are so good but my favorite was Mango OT. You wouldn't be able to tell it's alcoholic because it's just that tasty. The Flaming Lotus came with a little fire show, which actually added a really nice scent to the overall drink - also so delicious! Their food is top notch so yes, it may seem over priced but I find it so worth it. The beef carpaccio has such a great crunch and flavor that you'll be wanting more. Their truffle crab fried rice had huge chunks of truffle and the masago they add to the fried rice is such a nice touch for the popping texture and ocean flavor to the dish. Will be back again soon!
Really solid Vietnamese food! I totally understand the mixed reviews from locals who are used to mom and pop Vietnamese restaurants but actually the lunch prices are pretty comparable (~$20-$30 per dish, $16 appetizers). The flavors are really consistent, with good pho broth, really tasty lemon grass pork chop, and solid banh cuon. Everything is nicely portioned and fresh. The pho did lack meat and didn’t come with the complementary veggies on the side like you would find in most Vietnamese pho places. But the fried doughnut was crispy and soaked up the broth well. The fact that it’s always booked out says something about its quality! But if you’re looking for comfort Vietnamese pho, there are many other places in the city that fare better.
Dec 20th 2025 Got seated right on time - 9 pm Bonus points for being kid friendly ! - Iirc they don’t have a kids menu The crab appetizer is a must try - new unique flavor - Hanoi style The lamb chops were the highlight ! Flavors !even the leeks and potatoes were perfection ! The vibe was chill and service was good
Got the tasting menu. Food was good, but I would recommend against getting it and here is why: the “ask Billy tasting menu” comprises of what I would consider rather unremarkable/cheaper items from the menu. In the regular menu there are fancy items like “lamb chop” or “truffle crab fried rice” or “sea bass” under the “Hot Dishes” section. The tasting menu had NOTHING from that section (contrary to my expectations, this is what I get from doing a “surprise me” menu without clarifying I guess”. Most of the items came from the cheaper “cold dishes”, “small bites”, and “classics” sections. Those items were a lot more closer to food items served by your every day Vietnamese restaurants in terms of novelty. Not going to lie the food was still good, but if I could pick again, instead of doing the “tasting menu” I would’ve ordered 2-3 hot dishes instead in a heartbeat. It just isn’t worth the money if you’re already familiar with everyday Vietnamese cuisine.
Solid upscale Vietnamese food in the middle of SF's Tenderloin. The Bun Cha was our favorite dish. The pork was cooked and spiced perfectly. Wrap it in some lettuce and the flavors will melt in your mouth. The beef tenderloin was pretty solid though I've had better. The Chilean sea bass was just average. It was well prepared, but it lacked any kind of real distinctivness. Service was solid and the ambiance was comforable, though it felt just a tad basic given the loftier prices on the menu.
We visited this restaurant based on a friend’s recommendation. The food was tasty, the atmosphere was cozy and relaxing, and most of the staff were kind and attentive. Unfortunately, our evening was ruined by the host, Bakie. From the moment we walked in, she greeted us with an unfriendly expression and seated us in a hidden corner with no warmth at all. Throughout the night, we saw her walking around the restaurant smiling and chatting with other tables, but with us she kept a cold, unwelcoming attitude. We did nothing to deserve such treatment, and it made us feel singled out and uncomfortable. We truly hope the owner takes action to improve this part of the service. It’s a shame, because this could have been a 5-star experience, but the host’s behavior forced us to take away 3 stars.
Being a fan of the old Bodega restaurant when it was in the Tenderloin years ago, I have tried and given this restaurant three opportunities in the last two years to make it right, it's time for the honest review. The food is mediocre at best. They served southern Vietnamese style pho without any bean sprouts, basil, lime, or hoisin sauce. The spring rolls came out with kinda bland peanut sauce, and hot sauce was only available upon request. The pho broth was watered down. The Vietnamese chicken was salad was decent. The two guys next to me at the bar barely ate their pho and the Vietnamese sandwich that they ordered, which now I can completely understand why. The worst part was the service. The bartender/waiter at the bar is Kyle A (his name on my check). He was unpleasant, indifferent and unhelpful. I had a box of leftover food. I politely told him that I rode a bicycle and needed a bag with a handle to hang on my bike. He flat out said "we don't have bags with a handle." I then asked him if he could go check in the kitchen. He then stared me down for a few seconds and never went to the kitchen to check. Within 5 minutes, other staff brought out other customers' to go food in paper bags with handle. I called Kyle out on that. He then turned the story around and said "I thought we were out of bags with a handle." and then he went on to tell me that I was rude. Needless to say, I won't be back to this restaurant again.
I had a truly disappointing experience at this restaurant—horrible is the only word that fits. I can see why it gets 4- and 5-star reviews; those must come from folks who haven’t tried authentic Vietnamese cuisine. Our first dish, the bánh cuốn, arrived cold, and the tapioca wrapper lacked the soft, delicate texture it should have. Next, the nem cua was oddly inconsistent—piping hot inside but disappointingly soft on the outside, far from the crispy perfection expected. As for the individual entrees: My bun cha was utterly average, missing that signature smoky, tangy essence that defines the dish. My son ordered the Bodega pho, which he found passable thanks to the generous proteins, but it came without any of the essential condiments or fresh vegetables that make pho complete. My friend’s pho Hanoi was the low point—the worst bowl he’s ever encountered. For $24, it had scarcely any stir-fried beef; he had to fish around just to gather what little there was onto a plate. When he showed it to the hostess, she coldly confirmed, “Yup, that’s it.” The shaking beef and bo ne were similarly mediocre, falling well short of Vietnamese standards. These might satisfy a craving for non-Vietnamese diners or those with limited options, but they’re simply not up to par. Service was sluggish throughout, and with our 2 p.m. reservation, we were rushed as the kitchen closed at 3 p.m. To make the most of my Chase Reserve credit before year-end, I even ordered two bun cha to go. Needless to say, I won’t be returning—what a letdown!
Not too impressed with this place. We have had better Vietnamese food at small locally owned restaurants. Service left a lot to talk about. The only thing I will say is that we waited more than 15 minutes for our drinks, waiter had to be reminded multiple times to bring my husband drink. Not a pleasant experience. Will not come back.
Service is contrast with the atmosphere because the host man at front on lunch shift. We arrive at 2pm and the restaurant is not busy. He is unwelcome and slow action by keep us waiting for a table and take the order. He never comes to check that we get all of order or cutlery. We spent $125 and he doesn’t deserve to share our tip with other staff. We will skip this restaurant if he still in-charge of FOH
Disappointed. Heard of the good reviews but our experience was not good. We came on a weekday for lunch. Of course no reservations. We were led to a table that is small and closest to the restroom while almost all the tables were empty. The entire restaurant only had two tables working including ours for the majority of our dinning period. The rice roll with mushrooms was good but the beef pho was unexpectedly terrible. Meat was given generously but doesn’t taste well/ fresh - it was hard to chew and had this weird taste that usually goes with stale food. It’s hard to believe a Vietnamese restaurant cannot get the pho right. Might be the worst I have tried so far. Alongside that, we have been waiiiiiting all the time. Waited 30mins ish for the pho to come and waited 30mins for the check. We tried to make eye contact but they won’t look at you. Not every friendly to working people who just want to get a quick lunch and go. Won’t come back again given the food, service and location….
