We were staying in the downtown area, and we don't want to get out of the neighbourhood due to safety and temperature reasons. And more importantly, we had too much steaks or sandwiches in the past 2 days, therefore, we wanted to eat some non Western food. Scrolled through the Google map and managed to find this michellin one star ⭐ Thai restaurant. We arrived at around 645, and the restaurant was fully seated. Thus, the server aksed if we wanted to sit at the bar in order to avoid the queue. Surely we took the offer. It actually was quite nice sitting at the bar because we can see how thr bartender was making and shaking the specially prepared cocktails. And also, the kitchen window was just next to us, so all of the dishes they made must passes through our seats. All of the food were amazing except the brussel sprouts which is burnt!
KIN KHAO Dined at KIN KHAO and was thoroughly impressed. The food was exceptional—especially the squid and the pork belly, which were truly outstanding. The balance of flavors and execution were spot on. We also tried the rabbit curry and the Brussels sprouts, both of which were very well done and complemented the meal beautifully. Service was attentive and professional, contributing to an overall excellent dining experience. While the pricing is on the higher side, the quality and creativity justify it. The chef clearly knows what they are doing. Highly recommended.
Kin Khao is one of my favorite Thai restaurants in SF. It’s definitely a modern take on Thai food but it’s delicious. Most items on the menu are very spicy so beware. Some of our favorites: - main dishes: massaman braised beef cheek curry, mushroom panang curry, black cod gaeng kua curry - smaller plates: plah pla muek squid, carmelized pork belly (pairs nicely with squid), yum polamai (excellent season fruit salad) Don’t skip the sticky rice and leave room for the black rice pudding for dessert. The vibe of the restaurant is cafeteria-like which doesn’t really match the michelin star expectation or prices
Very interesting Michelin star Thai restaurant. For dinner they offer prefixed menu and order to share menu. Three of us ordered two appetizers, two main dishes and could not finish. Appetizers are very generous portions, hot chicken wings are delicious. The highlight of dinner is the pork belly, it melts in the mouth, the flavor is great, not feeling heavy at all. Beef is very nice too. We ordered black rice pudding as dessert, it is a little bit too sweet. The service is very attentive, when we got seated, there is a handwritten card for our occasion which is very nice! The dining environment is cozy. My only complaint is that when they bring the dish over, they do not explain the details of the dish, that is what I expect from Michelin star.
Such a wonderful dining experience! It is unlike tour "typical" Thai menu, and gave us the opportunity to try dishes we've never had before. We opted for the multiple-course meal with set menu, and had so much fun trying so much food. The wings are hot, so watch out! Those peppers are sneaky! Reservations highly recommended.
This is a restaurant I would definitely go back to order different dishes. The most amazing dishes were: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟Plah pla muek: shrimp; served with sticky rice 🌟🌟🌟Stir-fried baby bok choy; 🌟🌟🌟Pad Kee Mao; The wait time was about 45 minutes. To use the restroom, simply get a card from the front desk; it allows access to the restrooms in the hotel lobby.
Food- 4.5/5. We got the Mushroom Hor Mok, Namprik Long Rua, and clams (special of the night). Loved the mushroom, the flavorful curry mouse pairs super will with the crispy rice cakes. Namprik Long Rua is very salty but it reminds me of legitimate south East Asian food. The flavorful sauce and pork belly also pairs well with the huge variety of vegetables. The clams were ok. It was tasty but had an interesting slight bitter taste to the sauce. Was a little disappointed by how many clams were barely open. Drinks- 5/5. Tried the Tom Yum 2.0 and Thai style old fashion and both were very well mixed and creative. Enjoyed both. Service - 4.5/5. Our waitress was very friendly and pleasant. There were people constantly checking on our table to take away empty plates. Only slight complaint is that food / drinks came out a little slow. To be fair the restaurant was really busy on a Saturday night. Recommend making a reservation in advance.
Really delicious meal at Kin Khao. We had the Nom Tok beans, tomato salad, Khao Yum , Pad Kee Mao, and Delicata Penang curry. They have a a lot of dishes that are veg forward and full of flavor. The first dishes came out super fast and continued with good pacing throughout the meal . This was my second time here and would come back again.
Casual for a Michelin Star restaurant, but the flavors are really there. If you thought you had Thai food, this is a next level rendition. Highly suggest reservations ahead of time as the wait can be almost an hour on a busy night. Dining area does get loud with conversation, so if you want something quiet this is not the place. The pad kee mao and massaman nuea are highly recommended. A blast of flavor and premium ingredients to recreate common Thai dishes.
not sure why all the negative comments, probably cause positive experiences dont urge reviews to post as much? we had an absolute amazing time, and i think this place indeed deserves the Michelin star. cons: a bit dingy and crammed to my liking. and not the most airy and ventilated pros: i generally expect three criteria in fine dining: taste, innovation, portion size(most restaurants fail at this) and 5star in each category. the fried chicken and thai pad were nice twists on our favorite foods. the pork was cooked to perfection. drinks were delicious as well! we were served hot towel after chicken wings and our tables meticulously cleaned after each course.
i've been here a couple times now, and each time was phenomenal. especially for the price point, this spot is definitely a contender for the best Thai in SF

Highly recommend this one Michelin star Thai food in SF. The atmosphere is down to earth and quiet. Excellent Thai food and the service is excellent as well

Really interesting and fun dishes that also deliver on taste. While lots of meat on the menu, also many options for vegetarians. Very much enjoyed our meal here.

Good service and incredible food make this place a must. The massaman beef cheeks and the pork belly were a complete standout. Just do it.
I love thai food in general. This is the best Thai restaurant I’ve been to, bar none. The food is refined, delicious, innovative, and traditional, at the same time. Every time I’m in SF, this is a …
The mushroom hor mok was innovative and pretty good. But the papaya salad was disappointing. The khao mun gai turned out different than expected, but nevertheless was satisfying. I also tried the khao soi and that was the highlight of the meal, but well on the spicy side for me. So, overall good was decent but not impressive to go back again.
Overall great food, servers are awesome, but dang the atmosphere is very odd for a Michelin starred restaurant. Very very loud and chaotic inside. Hard to hear the people you're with because it's so loud. I've been with people and solo and honestly solo is almost better because I don't have to lean halfway over the table to hear people lol. Quieter times are right at open and like an hour before close. Side note, lunch is better than dinner imo. Their soups and broths are amazing.
Overall A: this place indeed deserves the Michelin star, excellent taste, innovative, appropriate portion size. On a Sunday night with a 5 o'clock reservation, we had Yum Polamai stonefruit shallot cilantro salad, Pad Kee Mao drunken noodles pork onions basil, Khun Yai's Rabbit Green Curry pork meatballs basil, NA cocktails, Soi Ari pineapple lime, and Bang Rak tumeric lemon that was too bitter. Family style is usually our approach, and we were able to make 4 meals out of the two.

Food tastes great. I like crispy rice cake in hor mok and stir fried bok choy a lot. service is just so so due to lack of staffing. Price is preety reasonable given location and Michelin star.

The restaurant is nice in a way. Has a slight boutique feel to it. The food while good, I don't see how it differs from any good Thai restaurant. The black rice pudding was good and I like the spicy chicken. We had a side of rice, the noodle vegatarian style and the salad. Overall, I say give it a try if you are a fan of Thai food and in the area.
Got the khao yum, namprik long rua, and massaman. Massaman was basically just eating a beef stew and the namprik long rua seemed undersized for the price. Drinkswise, the Tom Yum 2.0 tastes just like Tom Yum. Nothing was bad. My party thought the flavors were not as strong or as authentic tasting as the dishes they were named after.
Came here expecting to have good Thai food but left a little disappointed for pricey dishes. The problem I have with Michelin guide restaurants is that they are trying too hard to make the food different from everyone else. My friends and I did not find food worth it. The rabbit dish was probably only dish that was good. Not sure we ordered the wrong dish but for the price everything should be good. The service was great but I would not go back again and this is coming from a Thai person. $85 per person was not worth it for us.
Michelin once again proving Marco Pierre White correct by giving out their stars like confetti. Appetizers like Mushroom Hor Mok underwhelming. Laab was burnt and bitter. pork belly, beef cheek, …

Had my bday lunch here and it’s quite disappointing. We got a small table that could hold all the dishes we ordered. We were rejected to switch to a bigger table even though there are a few available and it’s almost closing time. There is no bday special. Not even acknowledgment about a special occasion of the reservation. Average Bay Area restaurants do better than this. The food is still pretty good especially the stir fried noodles. Not that other Thai restaurants don’t have something very similar though.
Updated review (2025 visit): We came back in 2025 (first visit in 2019) and ordered the mushroom hor, wild boar larb, sticky rice, and black cod curry. • Mushroom hor (2/5): Very bland, with just a hint of spice. • Wild boar larb (1/5): Tasted burnt and overly spicy, with no real depth. It lacked fat, sweetness, or acidity just heat. • Sticky rice (2/5): Plain sticky white rice, no noticeable sweetness. • Black cod curry (3.8/5): Probably the best dish we tried, but extremely rich. Has good acid and fatty, but doesn’t really sit well in our stomach. Maybe because it was empty. To their credit, they did remove the larb from the bill.
Sucha huge disappointment in both service and food quality. My dish and beer was served 15 minutes AFTER my wife's sandwich. Then the quality of the food was marginal at best. The service was ab…

PLEASE AVOID!! If only I could give 0 stars to this place. I had an upset stomach after eating here. The noodles were greasy and bland. The pork was spoiled and it was smelling bad. We couldn’t even eat anything more than two bites so we threw it away. Forget michelin, this place doesn’t deserve any good rating for the food they serve. It was absolutely disappointing and probably the worst restaurant food I have ever had.
*Be warned: not anywhere close to Michelin quality* The food was… fine. Nowhere near Michelin star quality. Clearly, Hilton has paid Michelin to give this place a star. The food was one note, a few good dishes but mostly bland, take out quality. There was no wine tasting menu. A good portion of the food is just rice and sauce. The atmosphere was not updated and extremely loud. I could barely hear the person across from me. The most disappointing part was the service. While initially nice enough, our server had no knowledge of the wine or food. On top of this, we had were forced out. While we were still sitting, we were brought our check, payment processed, and they removed the check from the table without once asking us how the meal was. This is some of the worst service I’ve had period, much less at a restaurant that charges Michelin prices. Please, go somewhere else with your time and money. This restaurant needs to lose its Michelin star or improve its quality so more people don’t waste their valuable dinner dates on an extremely disheartening experience.
We went there for our anniversary, but it’s a disappointing experience. Thai food has always been my favorite, and a you-can-never-go-wrong category, but KinKhao really tells me how wrong that idea is. The food should be authentic, according to the website and the menu. We ordered what’s recommended by the waitress, yum polamai as appetizer, massaman nuea for main dish, and namprik long lua for side. Yum polamai is fine, it is acidic and that does the job for an appetizer. I didn’t like it but it’s not bad. The second dish is namprik long lua, which is a bunch of fresh veggies and the dip. It’s just not a good combination, the dip is salty and doesn’t go well with cucumber, fig or the papaya. The only thing the dip worked with is the fried eggplant. At this point I was already kind of disappointed, but I still had hope for the curry. Finally, the main dish massaman nuea is served, which is braised beef in massaman curry, and I got really upset. After the appetizer, and the salty dip with veggies, the curry shouldn’t be something that tastes like nothing. It should be more flavorful, not bland. The beef is tender but it’s got no flavor. Who likes this stuff? And who gives this restaurant a Michelin star? The Michelin star is as good as an one-star review. If you have never had Thai, and this is the first time at a Thai restaurant, I’m sorry.
