Cozy, Delicious, and Super Satisfying Rusty Ladle SF totally hit the spot. We had their clam chowder and a sample of their tomato soup plus the inside out schmelty sandwich, and it was everything I wanted — warm, comforting, and packed with flavor. The chowder was just the right amount of richness, and the sandwich was perfectly toasted and satisfying. The place has a chill, welcoming vibe, and the staff was friendly and helpful. It’s the kind of place that feels like a local gem. I’ll definitely be back next time I’m in the mood for a cozy, delicious meal.

The Rusty Ladle has completely won me over! Their soup selection is outstanding — there’s something for everyone, and you can taste the difference that fresh, quality ingredients make in every single bowl. The broths are rich and flavorful, and the variety keeps me coming back again and again. What really sets this place apart, though, is the staff. Friendly, welcoming, and genuinely passionate about what they serve — they make you feel like a regular from the moment you walk in. If you’re a soup lover (or even if you’re not yet), do yourself a favor and visit the Rusty Ladle. You won’t be disappointed!

The perfect place if you want soups. Very difficult to find such gems. Loved this place and atmosphere. We ordered the potato leek, tomato and the chicken soup. All 3 were great. They also have sandwiches which looked super tempting.

ABSOLUTELY amazing, a must with the rain season. I think their clam chowder is my favorite in the Bay and also they will let you try their soups. They also rotate a couple of offerings daily/ weekly

Small space but very fast and friendly service. Best grilled cheese sandwich with crusty cheese edges. and the $4 cup soup was a perfect match. Would love to come back.

Such a sweet, quaint little place I liked all the soups so much that I couldn't pick and got one of each The grilled cheese was very decadent and rich

A truly a delightful experience. My mom was craving soup. I searched “soup” on Google Maps and Rusty Ladle popped up. Very thankful we stopped! The service is friendly and hospitable. We tried the clam chowder and duck dumbo and split a “Schmelty” woth a side of tomato bisque. Highly recommend! Note: This Week’s Specials rotate

I loved this cozy place - soup and the best grilled cheese I’ve ever had! Also a very reasonably priced meal, I’ll definitely be back. Ate on the outdoor patio, food was served promptly and with no fuss.

Soupy weather of the Outer Sunset has finally met its match. If comfort is what you crave, Rusty Ladle delivers it in spoons — from the best grilled cheese of my life (add the kimchi) to an assortment of soups that John and team have poured their souls into, the menu truly offers infinite paths to enlightenment. Don't wait for a rainy day — there's no right or wrong weather to treat yourself to the best soup(s) of your life.

The soups were delicious! We chose the clam chowder and the Mulligatawny. There was a line at the door and we waited about 10 minutes. You can choose bar style seating or outside parklet seating.

WOW!! OBSESSED. Every single menu item here slaps, and the weekly rotation keeps things fresh and interesting. I don’t even live in the neighborhood but make it a point to come here at least once a week to try their new soups. John and the team are so nice and make coming here such a treat. Really appreciate it when a business truly cares, and it’s easy to tell that this is one of those gems. (Bonus points to the cool penny bar that they created by hand)

Wow. The perfect complement to a foggy day at Ocean Beach. Add a dash of hot sauce to the clam chowder, and ask for a little cup of tomato soup for dipping the schmelty. It'll keep you warm and cozy all day

For me, it’s always soup weather. We went on a 70 degree day but that made near to no difference as we probably would’ve loved it regardless. We sat outside to take advanced of the warm summer weather. The atmosphere pretty busy for Friday at noon. I ordered a bowl of the Shrimpatesh with a side of the Schiacciata bread. It was warm and hearty. My friend had the Schmelty which was deliciously cheesy with a cup of their tomato soup. They had wonderful service and I would most definitely recommend this outer sunset gem. They change out their soups every week and I will most definitely be returning to try them.

Relaxing bar to get warmed up with an assortment of soups and sandwiches. Try their “schmelty” grilled cheese and don’t forget to add kimchi to add a nice textural contrast to the sandwich.

Honestly such an amazing spot. Service was amazing, they let you try the soups, food was spectacular, beers on tap. Owner was there washing dishes and bussing tables, made a point to be friendly to us. They offered us more soup refills. Atmosphere was very homie local vibes. We just moved here and really needed this meal. Thanks Rusty Ladel!

I discovered an amazing soup restaurant in the Outer Sunset. I have now been multiple times and every soup I have tried from pumpkin miso to clam chowder has been delicious. The staff is very friendly and accommodating and I met the owners John and his wife Kristen who are delightful. I highly recommend Rusty Ladle especially on those cold San Francisco days. They also have a wonderful outside patio when the weather is nice. I would give 6 stars if I could.

OMG! Soup heaven! I tried the clam chowder, the tomato soup and the gumbo! Amazing! We also had the SMELTY which is a grilled cheese on steroids! Fricken Amazing!!! Only thing is ......I wish there was one of these in Alameda! I will be dreaming of this wonderful food. As I was eating I was wondering 🤔 is their food in heaven? There MUST be because this food is the definition of HEAVEN!

Soups were still tasty, sandwiches were …ok, but they really need to make a change to the slow production. From ordering to getting our food, it took 24 minutes. Mind blown. Suggestions: 1. Get a bigger or add another panini grill. Move the ice machine somewhere else to make room for the sandwich making area. 2. Have people pick up their own order from the window and take it to their parklet seat, instead of the staff walking the length of the restaurant just to take the tray to their seats. Waste of valuable time. Or, cut the counter near the front so that it has one of those flip up counter and allows a person to go through. This is my 2nd time eating there, and the experience was so different. Staff was still nice, but they need to make a change to serve customers faster. I didn’t expect to take almost half an hour to get soup.

Overall the food was okay, certain dishes disappointed me more than others. The service was okay, they took my order and served me my food within a reasonable time frame. The atmosphere is by far my favorite part of this establishment. The indoor seating gave a cozy, diner feel and the outdoor seating included a beautiful view of the ocean. I wouldn’t come again for the food as the tomato soup was a bit watery, acidic, and honestly tasted like tomato juice more than tomato soup. The schmelty was one of the better dishes I tried. It was a bit melty, the chorizo was a bit bland (and hard), and the bread was mildly soft. La maginifca is a one and done sandwich. It was quite sour and I only tasted the olives. I could not taste the meat and the cheese was lukewarm at best. To be honest it was more of an olive sandwich more than a “maginifca” sandwich. Overall, I wouldn’t go out of my way to come here again but if I want soup and a view of the ocean I might come here.

Had high hopes for this place based off of reviews, but it simply didn't hit the mark. The clam chowder was bland and watery, the tomato soup was sweet and without any character. We wanted take out, but ended up eating our soups while waiting for the sandwich, only to realize they had forgotten it. When reminded, they pulled a premade sandwich out of the fridge and we had to request to grill it. That too was unimpressive with a solid lack of cheesiness going on for a grilled cheese. They also don't have cheese as a side available, riddle me that. The only good thing here was the selection of hot sauces, without which nothing would have been edible. All in all a disappointing waste of calories.
