Yum, Yum, and more Yum! When I come here I always get the hot, roast beef sandwich with everything and it is one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. I like that it's traditional and old school. Tastes amazing fresh off the grill and even tastes better after a few hours when the flavors meld together. I prefer simple and amazing food and this is it. Give it a try; you will love it!
Has tasty, good quality subs and sandwiches, and is a classic San Francisco establishment. Cash only and a bit on the pricey side, but portions are quite large. Their fries are perhaps a bit unconventional in shape, but are delicious none the less. Highly recommend.
Easily the best sandwich spot in the Sunset. I have only went with the hot subs here so I haven't had the opportunity to experience the entire menu. They do a great job of balancing the meat to bread ratio. Their Philly is a personal favorite and I have yet to find another in the city that can match. Good spot that only locals know about.
One of the best sandwiches I've ever had! Not kidding - it was delicious. Make sure to try the hot sauce too. The folks working were all incredibly kind. Cash only!
Wow, the sandwiches are amazing! My husband and I literally ate in silence as we were enjoying our food that much. The bread, toppings and sauces all come together magnificently! Plus the service is fast and friendly. Highly recommend!
Hands down the best sandwich in the United States! We drove 35 minutes each way on 2 separate days during the week to order the Steak and Cheese sandwich with the works. A large portion for 1 person served lunch and dinner later. The hand cut fries are sooo good!!
Best sandwich I have ever had, great atmosphere and service. Stop here for an amazing lunch and good atmosphere
I haven't been here for 15-20 years. So sad they don't have there veal parmasean, but as always everything is amazing. The same woman who made my sandwich as a child, was there making it for me and my daughter. She's the most beautiful, kindest, hard working woman in San Francisco. I appreciate and look up to her immensely. If ever in San Fracisco, it is a place one should visit.
Growing up in New York, I know my sandwiches. This is a family owned shop that makes amazing tasting sandwiches. They use the best bread and ingredients. Try their Steak n Cheese, it is amazing! Also there fries are fresh and made there. Can't say enough giod about this place!
Best sandwich I ever had. Steak and cheese with extra onions. If you go there you get a real Italian sandwich.
Wow! Just amazing. We went with the pepper steak sandwich and the pastrami sandwich all the way. It was just the right balance of flavors and the bread (the most crucial part of a perfect sandwich) was perfect. Helpings are generous, and the owners were super friendly and welcoming. Thanks for a great meal!
Always delicious, and good prices (cash only). I usually get a large steak/cheese, and it’s 2-3 meals for me. It feels very much like an east coast joint; always feel very appreciated as a customer, and even though I don’t carry cash, it’s worth an atm run for this.
Excellent Boston style subs! I love the hot pastrami. Every sandwich I've tried there is outstanding, if you like hot sauce try their homemade hot sauce. They are so popular that sometimes they have to close earlier because they run out of bread. To me that's a very good sign of the quality food they serve. They are cash only but have an atm on site. If you've never been there, you are missing out big time.
Some of the best sandwiches in the Sunset! Love the hot pastrami and Italian combo. Delicious bread and spicy peppers. Once you try their sandwiches you’ll want to go back for another!
Delicious sandwiches! The chicken and the Reuben are amazing and their homemade hot sauce is perfect. Cash only and family run, it’s been a go-to comfort food spot for me.
There sandwiches are delicious. They make there own coleslaw and we have become hooked on there homemade meatball sandwich. Haven't tried there potato salad yet but I will soon. Casual dining space, cash only so come prepared.
This place is great! Huge delicious sandwiches, great service and friendly staff. It is cash only and I didn't have cash but they made me a sandwich anyways and let me come back later to pay which was so trusting and generous of them. I thought the Beef and Pepper sandwich was great and reminded me of the subs I used to get on the East Coast.
The best sandwich you will ever have!! So good owner is super nice and gives great recommendations. Amazing food speedy service super nice workers 10/10
If I could give more than 5 stars I totally would! I had the best experience at the yellow submarine in SF. This business is a family owned business thats been around for many years. They give you the best old school experience which you don't see much anymore in the city. The sandwiches are to die for !!! The sandwiches and hand sliced potatoes are best !!
Old school. Cash only. Huge portions, a large sandwich is like 4 sandwiches elsewhere. Visiting from the East Coast and I approve. Edit: Tried their fresh cut fries and they are to die for.
Very good steak and cheese sub. Fries are home made. Very nice people. Family owned and operated. If you are in the area of 6th and Irving don’t miss this place. Cash only but there is an atm 2 blocks down!
SUCH a good find!! Loved my sandwhich and loved the people even more ❤️ This is family owned and operated. The service was quick, but with high quality. Not to mention the amount of food you get is a great deal. My partner and I were able to split a large, meaning it came out to about $7/person... amazing! I will be returning! :)
These are the most delicious, best value sandwiches in the city. Family owned and operated. Try their flagship steak & cheese or any other sandwich on the menu. Make sure you try their french fries as well, full slices of potato, unbeatable.
An old school family run sandwich place with excellent sandwiches. It's one of my most favorite sandwich spots and the pastrami is absolutely incredible!!! I genuinely think about more than a person should be thinking about a sandwich lol. The "fries" are excellent as well, they're like a thick sliced fresh fried potato chip.
The Yellow Submarine Sandwich Shop is a San Francisco Sunset District institution! I grew up in SF and am just now getting around to this shop, thats been around since the early 70's. The family that run it are so friendly. Even when busy, they take the time to say hello and if I'd ever had the sandwich I ordered before. It was my first and one of the fellows behind the counter told me I was going for a very popular one and his favorite. In today's non personal cyber world, it's feels nice to be seen and valued. Two thumbs up for service. The sandwich, Hot Pastrami was delicious as were their homemade French fries.
Old school family owned small business sandwich shop which has managed to retain the Old San Francisco charm . Owners run the shop and are really friendly and chit chat with you when not busy preparing. Sandwiches are freshly prepared and the ingredients are really delicious. Highly recommended !!
Really good food and good people. I got the pastrami expecting the general derivation of something you could get at Togos. Boy was I wrong. A nice toasted roll, delicious pastrami, and was that a healthy portion of caramelized onions? Yes please. Absolutely delicious. 10/10
The subs are unrivaled anywhere else. Food quality is amazing, portions are generous, and there’s plenty of seating should you wish to dine in. It’s an extremely well-run yet warm and welcoming family-owned business. The Yellow Submarine has been a San Francisco staple for decades and is well worth a visit, whether you’re a local or a visitor! Note: it’s cash only so come prepared.
I LOVE YELLOW SUBMARINE. I think its one of the best sandwich spots in all of SF. Its got an old vibe to it, small counter and ordering area. The son and mom are always there and super friendly. The subs are massive and come in all sorts of combos. I love to get a lot of meat and get it fully dressed. But the sleeper item here that not many people order are the garlic fries. Thinly slice potatoes, they aren't really crispy but they are drenched in wonderful garlic flavor. A huge to go box for only $5. GET IT.
This place is my favorite sandwich in the sunset and one of the best in SF. The portions are HUGE, the bread is so soft and perfect, and the people running it are great. Toasted sub heaven. We pick it up on the way to the park for a picnic, a hangover cure, or just when I’m having a sandwich craving (always). I seriously love this place SO MUCH.
Great subs made to order. Super friendly service. My daughter and I love this place! We stop here every time we are in the neighborhood and even make a detour when we have a craving. Best sub place in SF as far as I am concerned. **CASH ONLY!!!!! There are ATMs down the street but better to just have cash. There is seating but we always get ours to go. This is not a sit-down place.
Amazing bread!! Old school sando place. Take to go and eat in the park.
The best sandwich in San Francisco! I’ve lived in SF for 31 years, never knew about the Yellow Submarine! Now I do and will be eating there often! If you want a good old fashion sub this is the place to go!
The sandwiches are amazing and the staff is even better! Will be back again and again
Great sandwiches been coming here for years.I highly recommend
Bring your cash (it's cash-only) and come get these sandwiches!! I've never had a bad experience here. This is a truly authentic, local, family-run place worth supporting. Rami and his brother are great owners, they'll take care of you. The sandwiches are made with love and you can experience it in the flavors. I love the hot pastrami especially. And make sure to get the homemade hot sauce!
This is the best sandwich shop in SF, I’ve ever had. It's a family owned business. The brothers and their mom, are such sweet and nice people. Bring cash, no cards accepted (CASH ONLY!) They treat you like family here! Feel the love 🫶🏽🥰
The Yellow Submarine has been on my bucket list since I moved into the city a couple of weeks ago - I love sandwiches and given the great reviews, this place looked like they did them right. I finally had the chance to go a couple of days ago after waking through the park. When I walked in I was greeted by the two brothers (?) working the kitchen as well as what looked like their mom in the back. I love family-run places so that alone made me excited. I ordered a large pepper steak with the homemade hot sauce since it was recommended to me by a friend. The prep looked pretty straightforward, but I did notice that the meat looked really fresh and had a nice red colour. When they finally gave me the sub I almost dropped it - it was that heavy! I took it home ASAP. When I opened it I couldn’t believe how freaking massive this thing was! I’m usually good with eating a lot of food but I was legitimately worried I wouldn’t finish. Straight-up: it was a really, really good sandwich. I ended getting all of the toppings, but when I go back I’ll probably cut some just so I can taste the ingredients better. One thing I’d change is probably the size - a large is waaayy too big for one sitting, and the price reflects that at $12. Ideally there would be a half order for $6-7, but even the medium is pretty hefty. All in all though, it was satisfying as hell, and it’ll definitely be my go-to if I’m ever craving a sandwich.
I had a great experience getting sandwiches here today. Everyone was so kind and personable! The sandwiches are so delicious. I will definitely be back!
OMG their steak and cheese with the house hot sauce literally tasted like an in n out burger!! Best steak sub in the city by far
The sandwiches over here I like no other my hand to god. Their steak & cheese tasted so good I wanted to shutout to the rooftops. The owners made me feel very welcomed I loved the imagery inside the building. I would highly recommend this joint to anyone.
Absolutely the best sandwich on the entire planet, such a unique combination of flavors and textures! hot pastrami is the way to go!!!
The Yellow Submarine is hands down my go-to sandwich spot on Irving. Just a few steps from my produce store (KJ Produce), this place has earned its spot as a local classic. Their steak and cheese sandwich with extra mayo and homemade hot sauce is unreal — juicy, flavorful, and addictive. You can tell they take pride in what they do. The staff is fast and friendly, the vibe is old-school and real, and the food hits every single time. If you’re in the Inner Sunset and haven’t tried this place yet, you’re missing out. Grab a sub, walk it over to the park, and thank me later.
Very kind people, pastrami sandwich is so good and so are the fries ❤️ thank you!
Family owned and tasty sandwiches with fresh ingredients. It’s reasonable priced and great portion as well. Sometimes they get pretty busy so call ahead to order and you won’t have to wait for your food. It’s cash only too!
finally tried Yellow Submarine, and I have to say, I’m impressed! The sandwiches are packed with fresh ingredients, and the bread has that perfect toasted crunch. I got the steak and cheese, and it was so flavorful and juicy—it might be my new favorite. The portions are big, and you definitely get your money’s worth. The staff was super friendly and quick too. If you’re in the mood for a great sandwich, I highly recommend checking it out!
A family owned tradition in the Sunset District of 50 years. Neighborhood love here, an older guy and his grandma work it. Quiznos multiplied by 20 easily. Very quality. And get the DUTCH CRUNCH BREAD. It’s cash only. And I encourage everyone to try it out when you come to San Francisco.
Very cozy mom pop style Italian sandwich place. Make sure you also grab their fresh made chips. The steak sandwich is popular, the Italian combo is also great! Also ask for the homemade hot sauce
Great spot to get a quality sandwich. Consistent and generous/quality service.
We got huge, delicious, and well-made sandwiches for a great price. Shop local - don't spend $15 on a mid-tier place like Subway when you could have a much better sando for much less!
11-21-21: I've always passed this place for years and finally was hungry after visiting UCSF. Decided to try the Italian Combo sandwich which had two salami and mortadella + provolone cheese. Sandwich was Big. Overall, the 🥪 was pretty good. The bread was toasted and I liked the vinegar sauce. Would try a different sandwich next time. Maybe the steak and cheese or the pastrami sandwich!
One of my favorite sandwich joints in San Francisco, Yellow Sub has been an Inner Sunset institution for decades. This family owned place has been cranking out hot and cold subs with the same consistency ever since I started coming here in the 80’s. The Hot Pastrami, laced with mustard and Swiss, will always be my favorite sub at YS. Don’t sleep on the steak and Turkey options as well. The house chips are thicker than normal potato slices fried to order. Service is fine. The ladies who ran YS I’ve the years have passed the reins to the next generation and it hasn’t missed a beat. Parking isn’t always easy in this corridor but no worries. Find a spot and get in line.
OMG THIS PLACE IS ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS 👌. The sandwiches are HUGE! Each one hand-made with love. We walked almost 2 miles to go here because it came highly recommended. IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT- 10/10 wonderfulness! We wanted to go back, but it was our last day in San Francisco. Im headed there on my next trip. Try it. I promise you'll be hooked! 😉
I left San Francisco 4 years ago and make a point to bring cash every time I will be coming back to SF so that I can swing by here and grab a sandwich. I love their House Hot Sauce and my fries never make it to the bridge when I'm on my way out. YUM. Getting hungry just thinking about this place!
Not to be dramatic or anything, but this is the best sandwich I’ve had in a while. The place is run mom and pop style and everything is made to order. The sandwiches have lots of meat and good, toasted bread. Get them with the works. One important note - the place is cash only. If you forget cash they’ll be happy to make your order while you run to an ATM two blocks away. I look forward to returning!
I just had one of the best sandwiches ever! The ingredients were fresh and packed with flavor, and the owner was incredibly friendly and welcoming. It made the whole experience enjoyable from start to finish. Highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a delicious meal and great service!
I've been wanting to try this place for years! I've had my Fav sandwich spots all over the city, and Yellow Sub now will dominate that list! As they boast “The restaurant's welcoming atmosphere and affordable prices make it a neighborhood favorite, drawing in loyal patrons for over 30 years.” must try!
Wonderful sandwich shop! Owner was amazing and very welcoming! Now the sandwich was the best part. Recommend the hot pastrami and ask him how he makes his favorite!
Call me simple but for me this is how I sandwich should be made. I went for the Italian combo with provolone cheese and no veggies. The sandwich was made to order, had a solid amount of meats and cheese. The bread was fresh and lightly toasted to perfection. I had the big Sammy and took me 2 meals to finish it. I will definitely go back when im in the area.
I visited this place once and loved it. The staff was friendly, the food was very yummy and their chip-cut fries were a standout. They’ve been around for 50 years and it’s easy to see why.
Really delicious sandwiches. Tried their chicken Sandwich and fries, they were simply awesome. Great friendly service. Family operated business from last 44+ years. Place does get busy. You will not be disappointed. Highly recommend this place.
The Yellow Submarine easily has the best sandwiches in the whole Sunset district. The secret is they toast their sandwiches (Boston, or Quiznos-style). They also add a really nice, fairly mild hot sauce, which just pulls the whole sandwich together. I always get a medium Italian Combo, which is plenty large for one hungry person. I’ve never even thought about getting a large.
This place is clutch! We been eating their sandwiches for at least 10 years now (hot pastrami with the WORKS and their home made salsa!) I don’t even like pastrami 😅 . So, if you live in the neighborhood or if you are a tourist and close to it, go get a sandwich. It’s an old school place but the neighborhood is super cute and there a lots of benches to sit and hang out.
Awesome Italian sandwich - HUGE portion that was enough for a full sandwich for two people (it was bigger than my forearm). Great bread, and they added hot sauce to the sandwich in the shop since they didn’t have small containers which I appreciated. Reminded me of the east coast Italian sandwiches I used to get, and for a decent price ($15 for the large) Cash only, street parking, I called in my order and it was ready in 10 minutes. Will be back!
DEE -licious. Fresh and hot. They also customised my moms sandwich to make it more diabetic friendly and ripped out the inside of the bread. The fries were like thick potato chips and were hot and yummy. I am not a Boston sandwich expert but do love food and can say that the sandwiches are delicious. Trust their standard order, all the toppings help to balance the sandwich.

As I am a sucker for longevity and the nostalgic feel of long standing family owned businesses, I loved everything about it. Food was delicious and worth every cent. The gentleman at the counter and prepping all welcoming and friendly but Mama Bear was the capper for me. High recommended 👌
When you see someone’s 4 foot tall grandma behind the counter making sandwiches, you KNOW it’s going to hit so hard! Portion sizes were huge and the sandwich was amazing! Will definitely be back.
These are the best sandwiches in the Bay Area. The bread is always fresh, the ingredients are high quality, and everything is packed with flavor. You can tell they really care about what they’re making. On top of that, the service is excellent. Definitely a spot I’ll keep coming back to and recommending to everyone.
The Steak and Cheese was delectable! It was the perfect sub to enjoy over at Golden Gate Park. Soft chewy fresh bread, lots of chopped up steak, I got it with everything and it was perfect. Can't wait to come back and try the other subs. Oh! It's cash only! Thats important.
I had the hot pastrami sandwich, and I don’t think I’ve ever had a sandwich this good in my entire life.. not even my own mother’s! The quality of the ingredients, the bread they use for the panini… yummy. And the love they put into their cooking.. it’s a family-owned business and you can really tell. Everything is incredible. I’d give them 6 stars if I could! My favorite sandwich spot in the entire world. No kidding!
Absolutely delicious sandwiches from a knowledgeable craftswoman. I never had French fries as just sliced potato and fried. More satisfying than just sticks in all honesty. An excellent blend between french fry and potato chip. We tried the pepper steak sandwich with everything & the house hot sauce. A perfect blend of flavors and an extremely satisfying sandwich. We were lucky to be there when traffic was low and got to enjoy our sandwich inside. If your looking for a time tested sandwich place THIS IS IT!
I've been coming here for 20 years. When so much of the neighborhood has been replaced with mediocre places. It's nice to have a place I can come back to where the quality is consistently good and the prices are reasonable. I'm a sandwich snob and Yellow Sub is easily my top 3 (if not the top). Definitely the best sandwich in the west half of the city. The corned beef and pepper steak are my go-tos. Highly recommend. Come hungry, even the smallest sandwich is super filling. I often take half home for later.
The sandwiches here are great, but the biggest appeal of this place is the owner. He’s the most welcoming person and a generous host. This is a must experience sandwich shop in San Francisco.

CASH only. I agree that the bread is awesome, especially for hot subs. Friendly nice service. Definitely should try! We got tuna today and I don’t recommend it because their tuna salad doesn’t go really well with this kind of bread and it had a little too much celery in it. Every other sandwich is promising! Edited: Tried steak and cheese today and it was great! One sub of any size (medium or large) is almost enough for two people.
Classic sf spot. Talked to the guy. Hes pretty chill, got a few kids and just loves making sandwiches. He’s good at what he does what can I say. His name is romi or something like that. To be honest, not a big amount of meat but still really good. Super solid sandwich, I think my Beli gave it a 7.3 which is pretty actuate.
Make sure to bring cash, there was no sign indicating they only take cash and took my order before letting me know. The sandwich was great though, all the ingredients tasted fresh.

This is an average sandwich shop with great service and high prices.
We live in the neighborhood, so this is one of our go to places for sandwiches. And come with an appetite as one large sandwich is a meal for two. Or two meals for one. Although the pastrami was delicious, I was disappointed with the last one as it was more bread than meat. Kinda disappointing when you get towards the end of your sandwich and all you're doing is eating a bread roll.
We got a Reuben sandwich and it was huge so two of us shared it. My kid got the Italian combo. The owner is nice. It was just him and his mom making sandwiches. The Reuben had very little pastrami in it. The roll was soft though. My kid liked her italian combo. There are better sandwiches out there. The place had seating when we went and it's clean, but they don't have a bathroom for customers which is disappointing. Cash only. The ATM in front of the store was vandalized so take cash.
Came here on a Sunday afternoon after a large group ordered ahead. The logistics of having 20 people constantly cut the line to pick up their sandwich and then pay was irritating. The operational layout was not thought through with everyone cramming through the narrow door, pick us are side cutting, all while there’s a line formed out into the sidewalk. Ordered 2 hot pastramis since that seemed to be a highlight, but was disappointed. The bread and pastrami lacked flavor and wasn’t nearly as good as the Submarine Center at West Portal. There was a musty smell inside the dining area, all of the seat cushions on the chairs were busted, the interior felt aged and dirty. Lastly, I’m always a bit skeptical of places that don’t take credit card because most of the time it’s to evade tax reporting which I don’t like supporting.
Food’s alright, came here a few times, owner is usually okay in service, last time I came with my daughter he was a jerk, but foods not bad just not the best service.
I've been going here for years. Living in the area for over 10 year, but man has the quality gone down. I ordered a large hot pastrami. I order extra meat because usually they don't put enough for the price. The sandwich was $17 and when I opened it all I saw was onions. See attached picture. I will never go here again and I would advice you to do the same thing.
Really disappointed in the sandwich and service here. It's a really small shop with a few tables to the side. I think this place lives off its legacy but when we visited, we were met with such disappointment. We ordered one sandwich and waited over 30 minutes for it. When we asked for an update on our sandwich, the worker was extremely rude and said he was making it right now. Seemed like they were focused on a large order that was placed after us. There was no one else there before us. The sandwich was fine but honestly nothing special. There are better sandwiches out there.
