Avis sur La Cantina San Fruttuoso
Lovely quaint Mediterranean seaside restaurant featuring wonderful seafood in a very small, gorgeous Bay, just north of Portofino on the Riviera. Our guide, the skipper of our yacht that was rented, called ahead and made reservations for us. In a table was available when we arrived. La Cantina only has a handful of tables, making reservations ahead of time is highly recommended.
Quite expensive, but you have to accept that the location is very remote! Delicious fish, superbly cooked and excellent flavour. The restaurant were able to cater well to our dietary requirements (no dairy). The view of the bay is fantastic and it feels a lot less busy in this smaller cove than over by the abbey.
After over three and half weeks of travelling around Italy and eating very well, this has been one of my favourites so far! The weather was not the best, however this added to the ambiance. From mussels, to seafood pasta and finishing with the sea bream cooked on volcanic rock, it was all very fresh and unbelievable delicious! Really fantastic service too! Highly recommend
Great food and views! Our waiter Samuel was great and gave us some great recommendations in fluent English. The grilled octopus (moscardine) is not to be missed (if in season). Featured in The Trip season 2, so if you're a Coogan/Brydon fan, all the more reason to visit.
Great view, lovely ambience, good food. The food is relatively pricey, but that's fine when you take the location and quality into consideration. Photos of the menu are added below. I didn't capture the wine menu, but note that you can buy house wine in carafes, and other wines only by the bottle. PS. To top it off I would recommend the coffee with Disaronno here :)
I struggled with this one. LITERALLY (and I know how to use that word) inaccessible by road, I didn’t expect haute cuisine - and it met my expectations, but also twisted my nipples in a good way. It’s a hike to get there, and when you do, the menu is more dogeared than my 17-yr old schnauzer*, but whatever you order from it has literally (again) been caught fifteen minutes prior. Basically - just go for the grilled fish, enjoy the fact that you’re eating in a grotto, and enjoy the view of 500 people hunting for 15 spots on a tiny beach beside a beautiful abbey. The ferry goes from Portofino or Santa Margarita every hour, and returns on the half hour (when we went in summer 2025)
Wow location and friendly staff. Would be great if there was a few more vegetarian options and also a wider range of gelatos which I’m sure would sell really when on the beach!
The pasta was just okay and the portion was on the smaller side. The seafood pasta was the biggest let-down — lots of bits and shells, and the largest shrimp was completely empty. Prices feel high for what you get, though to be fair, there aren’t many other places to eat in the area. And they brought bread to the table, which was later added to the bill, even though we didn’t order it.
Very nice food with a view in a hidden cove away from the main beach. The food is simple but good and the service is nice. A bit pricey. The prices for the beach beds and the umbrellas were outrageous, I can understand the exclusivity of the place but we spent there the whole day and no one took a bed/umbrella for the exorbitant price of 80euros for the day (they did not even give the option to do half day/ by the hour) so everyone was on the free beach (including us) while their nice area was completely empty for the day. Not a very smart way of doing business (I can understand there are tourist willing to pay a ransom price for the location in high season, but it would be smart to lower the price when there are no reservations/beds or umbrellas taken).
This restaurant in San Fruttuoso is mediocre, if not terrible. Except for the fried fish, the spaghetti dish was unworthy (sour, floating in oil, and of questionable quality). Not to mention the focaccia (it's hard to find such an inedible focaccia in Liguria). I'll conclude with the price: while the high supply costs are understandable, and despite being in a wonderful location, it's far too high: €98 for a fried fish dish, two plates of spaghetti, water, and a small beer. This isn't Italian cuisine, italian cuisine is good instead.
We had a very disappointing experience here. The restaurant charged us 28€ for a tiny portion of calamari, which already felt like a rip-off. When we asked the waiter about it, he completely ignored us. On top of that, the waiter was unfriendly from the start and offered no help throughout the meal. The food itself was bad and overpriced, and even the basics were neglected – our table was shaky, and although staff saw us struggling, nobody came to fix it or offer a solution. Overall, the combination of rude service, poor quality food, and outrageous prices made this one of the worst dining experiences we’ve had. Definitely not recommended.
