Avis sur The Galley Santa Monica
Neat place with terrific food. Super fresh seafood and great service. A little pricey but no regrets, right? We didn't have any anyways. Even ordered dessert I was too full to eat but did anyways. Service was attentive and down to earth. Overall great experience.
I had a few of the best cocktails I have ever had in my life and as an Australian on his own met some the nicest friendly people and magnificent service
Very cute and fun atmosphere. Staff is friendly and attentive. I ordered the wedge salad. The presentation of the salad wasn't the normal wedge. It was served in three slices. Overall, the salad was great. I would go back again.
I was in the area looking for Clam Chowder and BAM! I stumbled upon this Gem. Food was great, Flavor was Delicious. Go, just go. Stop in and pay them a visit. You will not be disappointed.
I really liked this bar, as far as I could see the food looked amazing and it was busy so it's a popular place. They have a pleasant inside area for sitting and the outside area as well is pleasant. It's by the beach. Prices are reasonable for the location. Would recommend this place to anyone.
My dad worked here years ago and they still have pictures of him hanging on the wall. I wasn't really excited to eat there at first but my dad hadn't been in there for years, so we went and I was pleasantly surprised. The menu was great and the children's menu was perfect for my kids. The food was delicious and the waitress was awesome. The best thing about the visit was listening to Tom Petty while my dad reminisced on all the good old days at the Galley where he bartended at met tons of women and ate like a king! Thanks for exceeding all my expectations and for all the memories!
Love this place! Oldest restaurant in Santa Monica. Serves great food at good prices.
The food was outstanding although I will say the mashed potatoes could have been mashed slightly more. But I travel a lot so my tastes are picky. I love the galley everytime I'm in Santa Monica. Any shortcoming of the wait staff was made up for by her beauty. Galley steak cooked perfectly No Reservations but they Fitness in this is the money
Best Happy Hour in Santa Monica. Fish tacos are delicious! Cocktails are super tasty and staff is very cool. Locals everywhere you look.
Recommended by friends in Florida. This place is GREAT. Food, wait staff, Vibe, all wonderful. A must visit restaurant The owner engages with customers, an he is a comic. Should be a stand-up comedian. Will come back 100% for sure
Another hometown local favorite. This is a classic old time steak house with seafood. Start out with a great cocktail from the bar and your off! The steaks are always cooked to perfection and are of great quality. I love the garlic mashed potatoes and the grilled asparagus with my rib eye steak. The servers are no frills, friendly, fast and efficient. I love love love the decor with all of the beautiful lights and beach/sea theme. Great date night!
Really good experience. We sat out in the back area. Our waitress was lovely. The prices were reasonable and the fish & chips was tasty. Ordered Irish coffees with cream which were great too. Will be back. Update: been back a few times since, still great 👍😊
This place is always perfect. The interior is decked with Christmas lights, seafaring garb and sawdust on the floor. The bar or the booths… they are both perfect. The burger is great and steaks never disappoint. Take them with a dirty martini and then stroll down the block for ice cream.
Wow! My husband and I came in 6:30 and seated immediately. The staff are fun and knowledgeable. The service is crazy fast yet you are not rushed at all. Food was great, I reccomend the lamb chops! Gina was an amazing server, 10/10 recommend. The only down side is cocktail pricing however the Manhattan is worth the price!
We had a nice dinner and ordered the tomahawk. The steak was preparded to our desire. The chowder was tasty as well. The interior looked like the restaurants name, a galley. Would come back, thank you.
Everytime we go to Santa Monica we always have a meal with our family that lives locally at the galley. There is a lively bar area, but we sit on the dining area next door and it is quiet and spacious. The lighting is red and a bit dark but that's not a real problem. Service is always excellent, and is always delicious and brought out quickly. We've never had a bad meal or time there and they cater for our 3 small kids well. Prices are reasonable, bit you don't leave hungry. Highly recommend visiting.
Food, atmosphere, service and overall feel was amazing! Only complaint is the saw dust on the floor. We were sniffling and sneezing the whole time.
A festive place for dinner. If you like Christmas, kitch and good steaks this place is for you. The steak with two sides was the perfect amount to share. The Cesar salad isn’t enough food to be a main dish and it comes somewhat deconstructed so be ready to cut your own lettuce. Overall great food and service.
Had Happy Hour beer, wedge salad, and fish and chips on Main St and it was under $30. Every thing was excellent! Partner had the halibut that was perfectly cooked and seasoned. Never had a bad meal or experience at the Galley.
I'll try to keep this short and sweet, this place is a sleeper 5* fine dining restaurant disguised as a cozy, friendly, and fun local dive bar. We were greeted by the owner Ron and his son (I can't remember his name 🤦♂️) who were very friendly, very personable, and seated us immediately to a nice booth. There were Christmas lights everywhere, a full bar of patrons laughing and living it up, and a back patio area for additional seating outdoors as well. Overall a very warm, cozy, fun, friendly and inviting dive bar atmosphere. It was my birthday the day before but we celebrated the next night at the Galley. Everything was EXCELLENT, I'm talking 5* fine dining excellent without the 5* price tag. We ordered the clam chowder (I'm from Boston so I'm very picky about my clam chowder, and I am going to order it again next visit), full wedge Caesar, garlic bread, veggie pasta for my fiancé (she's vegetarian) and I had the 40oz tomahawk medium rare with asparagus and loaded baked potato. Again everything was DELICIOUS and fresh made to order. The asparagus was surprisingly grilled to perfection, most places overcook or undercook it always but theirs was perfect. And the Tomahawk.... Just WOW. My 2 favorite places to go for Tomahawk steaks in the Santa Monica area where we live are BOA Steakhouse and Mastro's Ocean Club, but let me tell you, the Galley's just may have been better (and much more affordable). We used to go to BOA like once a month after a great work week, but I think we're going to be frequenting the Galley weekly now just for this Tomahawk. Words can't describe how good it was, I had dreams about it after haha. It was perfectly seared, perfectly seasoned, and the temperature was spot on MEDIUM RARE. I can't tell you how many restaurants overcook medium rare and bring me a medium or well done, but the Galley nailed my favorite medium rare. 5 stars! I highly highly HIGHLY recommend this place and cannot wait to return and try the rest of the menu, everything looked amazing. I'm so excited to find a new place to frequent with my fiancé now after a long week of work to reward and enjoy ourselves. Thank you to the chef, all of the staff, and captain Ron, we will be back! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
You walk into this funky old place thinking you found a local dive bar. In a way you have but you’ve also walked in to a first class eatery. The Galley is one of the oldest restaurants/bars in the Santa Monica Venice area. Not much ihas changed as far as Decor from, G-d knows when. A nautical theme that includes blowfish that have been turned into lamps, it looks like a place your dad would love. You will love it too. The drinks are all great pours. The steaks are fabulous. Everything else on the menu is top-notch as well. It’s a bit on the pricey side which can be a surprise. I promise you will have a great meal and if you like to drink, you will not be disappointed. The Galley should be declared a landmark and Captain Ron, should have a state holiday declared on his birthday. Long May you sail.
Just adding mine to the five star reviews! Great atmosphere cheerful but chill. Food is amazing Services. Great attentive, and personable. Try the crusted halibut. can’t beat it. I also really loved the rib eye and my friend said his was the best pork chop he’s ever had. it’s a winner all around.
Went to see Cirque Du Soleil on the Santa Monica Pier and then walked here for dinner. I cannot recommend it enough. The staff are amazing and really make you feel taken care of. The food was delicious. Captain Rob came by our table to say hi and ask how everything was. This is a must place to eat!!
Everything here is great. I especially love their tomahawk steak. I eat it all by myself and take the bone home for the dog. It looks almost like a dive bar, but with much better service and food, of course. It's dimly lit, and the inside has old school ship decorations; it sort of reminds me of when I was in the Navy. And, the staff is very friendly and attentive. This is a must place to visit if you are in Santa Monica.
Wish we had more time to try this place out. As it was we had happy hour out on the back patio. Staff was attentive and the happy hour portions were exceptional, especially the fish tacos. Drink prices were up there for happy hour though. The vibe inside is cool, but the bar was full so we sat outside.
Very intimate great atmosphere. Always great service. We love Capt.RON
The Galley is absolutely incredible! The atmosphere is so fun and inviting. The staff is friendly and efficient. The food was amazing! I cannot recommend this gem of a restaurant enough!
All of our food was delicious and service was just right.
Super cute the inside is dark and lit with multi colored lights which is so cool looking and the back outdoor seating section was very nice. Service was great and the drinks were fantastic! Fun relaxed place great atmosphere!
The Galley is a local neighborhood restaurant/bar with a nice number of regulars. It's always relaxed and easy to be there, with consistent food. It's a lovely place to go to eat and meet with friends without a ridiculous collection of West side posers. I love their fish and chips, they have a surprisingly good burger, and my kids love their pasta.
Amazing burger and steak sandawich. What a great vibe cant wait to be back.
Totally underrated!! This place is a hidden gem!! Service was awesome, food was AMAZING, drinks were delicious and the atmosphere was fun and great for louder groups. We really didn’t expect it to be as great as it was! We were looking for a steakhouse open late and decided to try it out. I was very happy with my choice and everyone in my group (6 people) said they all wanted to go back!
Delicious New York 14 oz steak and broccolini. The staff is friendly and attentive. A great, quirky, fun experience.
This place is a vibe! Absolutely packed on a Thursday night, even the bar had a wait. Nonetheless we were seated quickly without a reservation. The atmosphere is electric with a buzz of conversation. We shared the shrimp scampi, calamari, house salad and some garlic bread. All were delicious but the scampi stole the show with the lemon sauce. Sorry for the poor photos but the wall to wall holiday lights messed with the exposure. Trust me - all the food looked good and was delicious.
One of the best steak and seafood restaurants we have dined in! The calamari is very special and tasty. We also had the filet, which was cooked a perfect blue rare, and so tender. The clam chowder was also very good. Very highly recommended!!
The perfect neighborhood gem! The vibes are immaculate, the food is delicious, and the service is top-notch. I thought I’d lost my ring on the floor, and one of the staff, Ruben, not only took my information but moved things around and searched high and low for it - then even called me the next day with an update. I ended up finding it somewhere else, but the fact that he went so far out of his way says everything about the kind of care and service you can expect here!
What a great local spot!! Went both w seafood and steak options and everything was fantastic!! Left super duper happy. Service was amazing - ladies were super friendly and very helpful. The gentleman didn't seem to be in a good mood but we didn't seem to care too much because ladies made it up. Def highly recommended to visit!!
Don’t sleep on a visit to the Galley — we have dined here twice and every single item ordered has been cooked to perfection. It’s the best seafood I’ve ever in LA, and that’s coming from a Boston-native— the Salmon and Halibut are truly exceptional, better than perfect. The clam chowder and roasted chicken were equally delicious and flavorful. They have a large, heated patio in the back and are often frequented by a local crowd — one of the best kept secrets in Santa Monica.
I love the Galley! Solid Santa Monica Hole in a Wall since 1934. I love their Happy Hour - 5-7pm Monday to Sunday - which features delicious fish tacos, fried chicken sandwich, burger, calamari, discounted beer, wine, and galley cocktails. Truly enjoyed my ribeye, best served with broccolini or the classic mushrooms. Excellent service, regulars, and vibes every time. Strongly recommend.
Fun, Funky, Kitschy and an absolute must if you’re in Santa Monica. This joint has been around FOREVER! Wildly popular locals joint. Had the burger and loved it. I could sink into a corner booth and just people watch or let my mind wander over a few strong drinks as the Doors play in the background. Love this place! Ya gotta’ make time to come here if you’re anywhere near Santa Monica.
If old-time LA/Hollywood/Beach Cities is your thing, this is your restaurant. The well-kept place is dark (and lit with Christmas-tree lights). There is an outside patio area and a cover sidewalk area too. Steak is what I've always known them for, although the seafood, especially crab cakes, are really wonderful too. Just a fun trip back in time.
Great atmosphere and service from the moment you walk in. l’m looking forward to update my review once indoors are available so l can show how special this place is. The food and drinks always come out quickly and their happy hour menu/portions sizes and drinks are perfect. You’ll fall in love with their calamaris! Fresh, hot, and come with three delicious sauces! The more lights the better! 🎄Love it!!!
The decor here gives a boat-like feeling with blowfish lights and a somewhat dark booth seating. It wasn't too busy and our waitress was really cool and helpful. The beef filet was cooked to perfection as was the halibut. Personally, there were too many little Christmas lights hanging everywhere so it felt like a dated establishment. But I was pleasantly surprised with my meal and service.
Great local bar/restaurant. They have a good happy hour in the bar, however the food is just okay. Plus, on my most recent visit it took over an hour for the food to get to the table. This is Santa Monica's oldest restaurant (1934) and is very well themed!
Always good. Great clams and panko crusted halibut . Also good steaks and calamari. Drinks are well made and generous but stay away from the Manhattan.. they use grenadine instead of vermouth.
Super fun! Food was mid but enjoyed the atmosphere a lot, if you like meat this is the place for you
Awesome waitress, great food. The Happy Hour prices are reasonable and pretty amazing. I had the shrimp scampi appetizer and my buddy had the halibut dinner. Both were very good! There is an outdoor patio as well. This place is unique in decor. Very cozy environment!
Some of the worst service that I've had in a long time. Sunday night, a handful of tables full, never got refills at our table. If she came by our table, it was a minimum of ten minutes between each time we saw her again. We sat for thirty minutes just trying to pay. For a $250+ bill I expect better service.
Fun place to eat..the place is just so cool, and nice that it seemed like there were more locals than tourists. Mixed feedback on our dishes, some liked their's (linguine with clams (or mussels?) some didn't (fried shrimp). Service was fine. Fun dinner though...glad we went.
Enjoyable dinner and great atmosphere, bit of a local bar.. the fish pasta special was good Galley burger was good. Waitresses were busy and friendly, no rush Prices were decent and you could pay market prices for the lobster, fish, and top cut meats. Really liked the galley!
this place is kitschy and bizarre but in a kind of wonderful way… they make a great martini and while their food is on the pricier side, most of the things i’ve gotten were delicious. good place to bring out of towners and if you have a group, the tomahawk steak is impressive and delicious
Celebrating our anniversary weekend and looking for a local place for some seafood, we stumbled upon the Galley. What a magical place dripping with local history. It has a very laid back vibe, but do not let this fool you. The food is amazing and cooked to perfection. I had the Australian Lobster tail and Filet Mignon and My wife had the New York Steak. They are served with a peppercorn sauce that will change your life. If you opt to eat your steak alone, it will be perfectly seasoned when it arrives at your table. The clam chowder is like no other I have ever had. So many fresh clams and very hearty. We also ordered the calamari and we loved the pesto dip. They would easily get 5 stars if the wait staff would refill a drink more often.
Went to this place as a back up plan to another restaurant. I had a Burger, it was good. The atmosphere is sweet if you enjoy very themed and out there places. What I had to dock the place for was the prices, this by no means is an establishment with the ambiance nor sanitation to charge over $50 for anything on the menu lol. If I walk inside the bathroom and it’s a horror scene I don’t really know if I want to consume sea food haha. Stick to the burger, avoid the bathrooms. Your hands will come out dirtier than you went in.
This is a dated place (more old school dive than restaurant) that could be a lot better with an updated menu. I think the steaks were previously frozen which for the price would be unfair (not sure).Salad way over-dressed. Friendly service. Accessible. Parking lot (meters) behind building and some limited street parking.
$39 Faroe Islamdsalmon that I asked for underdone. The center was okay, the ends were dry. My side of broccolini was salty. Waitress had disappeared by that point and when I did tell her, no offer to take it off. Two of my friends ordered burgers. One ate his and said for $3 mor, you should go to Forma. The other friend could not eat hers. The waiter looked at her still full plate and said "Should I bring a box for you?" My friend said she'd bring it home for her dog. The waitress never checked in with us. The person I told about my broccolini said he was only there to take plates. The fourth member of our group liked his shrimp scampi. The martini and the gin and tonic were terrific as were the onion rings and fries. I think going for a drink is the best idea because it is cool looking and I've had good experience with the bartenders.
We came for my brother’s 21st birthday and was expecting a lot more than we received. Service was ok, we had to ask for items that were forgotten, but at least it was fast. The birthday boy’s steak was charred and the outside tasted burnt. For the amount we were paying, we expected more than what we got. Overall, the atmosphere was great and super cozy, but other aspects did not hold up which was unfortunate.
The staff was friendly and great! The decor is a fun mix of pin-up, military, and nautical - with Christmas lights. The drinks are okay and the food is a little bland. Still, a good place to go for history, and a reliable meal. Especially in a spice happy town as this one.
This place has a pretty crazy bar scene. I came here with a date and after a few drinks we were pretty much gone and the bartender just kept them coming. If you're looking for a great bar scene, definitely check this place out. I love that the bartenders are friendly, don't bother checking IDs, and will pour a mean stiff drink. There's a lot to see and take in just at the bar - people hooking up, making out, or just plain getting wasted. It's a fun time especially if you've already had a few drinks. We hung out for a while and then made our way back to the car. Luckily, they have a lot directly behind the restaurant and parking isn't that much. If you're looking to just hang out and have a few drinks, this place isn't bad. They also have a restaurant area as well but I've only been to the bar.
Looks great as a restaurant but the food was average and over priced. Service very rushed. The steak was 19oz rib eye on the bone (not as per menu) and very bloody I.e. rushed and not rested. Garlic mash and desert were good. We have definitely had better meals whilst visiting Santa Monica so hopefully this was just an off night for them.
Waitress might have been high on some downer - the food is over priced small portions that are fairly underwhelming to taste. I'd go back, but only for drinks and social atmosphere.
I really thought this place would be good....I was mistaken.. the food is bland with no flavor, both dishes, I ordered a shrimp pasta, and there were only 4 shrimp... who does that? The other pasta marinara tastes like a can of tomatoes. We won't be back...too expensive for less. However, the service by the waitress was great.
Went for the famous salad dressing it was horrible. No flavor no vinegar. Flavorless. Had to ask for extra dressing but it did Not help. Like I said, flavorless. .
Extremely expensive and not a great environment. A steak is like 70 dollars and only comes with one side. Many items just say "market price", so I can only imagine how expensive those ones were. The food was alright, but 37 dollars for some risotto and a salad is a little crazy in my opinion. And that was the cheapest entree on the menu. The value just isn't there. Not worth the time or money.
Made reservations for a Saturday night for 3 and a dog, requested outdoor seating and called beforehand to ensure there would be an outdoor table for us. Showed up for our reservation, there was no table available for us. The host had an attitude and was extremely rude. Once we were finally sat, took 45 minutes to get drinks. Food was good - a little on the pricey side - but the service was just unbearable. Will most likely not return.
Wait staff did their job satisfactorily. We were seated as soon as we walked through the door. It was 5 o’clock on a Wednesday. The decor was delightful. There was a fair sized crowd at the bar. It was a little noisy and we were seated about as far from the bar as possible. Within a half hour the bar crowd had doubled as did the volume. It was a very loud 94 decibels (same as a subway train) and spiking over 110 dB, into the damaging range. Very difficult to have a conversation at our table. So much for atmosphere. I ordered the filet mignon medium rare. It came more nearly medium well. It was very dry and way over seasoned, a waste of $60 for the steak. We cut our dining experience short, very disappointed.
I love this place so much, but I have been sitting here for 20+ minutes at the bar waiting to be recognized. Not bartender’s fault at all; she’s one person making drinks do every table. Hire her some support!
The waitress came back to our table and asked for a larger tip… we went with friends they wanted to pick up the bill, lovely gesture, we obviously didn’t know the amount. They said pay the tip, we didn’t know the amount of the bill so we left a cash tip if $30.. the waitress came back to the table and asked for for a bigger tip, in her job capacity she only brought us one round drinks and took our order, the men in back delivered the food, she came again to see if all the food was good.. does that establish an extra $20.. no. But I gave it to her…. That was not the proper way to handle clients.
I was there for over 15 minutes seating at the bar and none ask if I need anything. I feel like a place like this so famous for been one of the oldest restaurants in Santamonica should be more aware of it . It was my first time going in didn’t like the experience..for over 30 years I had driven by the place never had the chance to go in finally did for the bad experience…
The service was horrible and the food was worse. We started with garlic bread that was over cooked and stale. I had the chicken Parmesan. The coating on the chicken was soggy, the chicken was dry and the marinara sauce was flavorless. My partner had the mushroom risotto with chicken. His was drenched in lemon, overwhelming sour and bitter. The waitress came to our table to take our order and then we never saw her again. I had to get the attention of another worker just to get her to come over. Horrible horrible experience! Way overpriced for terrible food!
I honestly wish that I could give this place zero stars. The waitress, Sarah, was absolutely terrible at her job. Took 30 minutes to get 4 drinks and a soda, and asked for a refill 3 separate times (which finally came 45 minutes later). It took almost an hour and a half for our food to get to the table (it was not busy, this is COVID-19 times), and when we got the food it was awful. “Garlic” mashed potatoes were extremely dry, the 30 oz sirloin was cooked good (ordered medium rare), but was terribly bland, and the coleslaw was just shredded rabbit food. The other people at our table were unhappy with the value of the food, very small portions for the price. When it came time for the bill, our party that was forced to sit at 2 different tables, was never asked how or IF we wanted to split it. We were then told to draw triangles and circles and split it ourselves because “it isn’t her job to keep track of what we all have eaten.” Because we were unhappy, Sarah thought it would be okay to bring 3 pieces of “chocolate cake” to the table and told us to bring our completely uneaten steak home and season it ourselves. When we asked for the manager, Corinna came to the table and proceeded to be unapologetic in the fact that her waitress had failed to do her job, and stood up for her versus trying to help the situation. Corinna then called Captain Ron (the owner) to see if there was something he could do about the bill, which he would do nothing about. After finally getting the bill split (by my own hand), and getting the 18% undeserved “gratuity” removed, we were attempting to pay and were locked in to the restaurant until we paid the entire bill for a meal we did not consume, and when attempting to leave was assaulted by the waitress named Sarah and forced to pay for a meal that was tossed in their own garbage can. This restaurant is awful (the outside decor is nice), poor wait staff, clearly untalented cooks, terrible “management”, and inattentive owner. Nothing will fix what happened tonight, and it’s very unfortunate because they lost a couple of locals and 4 tourists who will now take this experience back to the Midwest and spread it around.
i told not to put tomatoes, so they put ketchup in the end! the cucumbers are like the day before yesterday, the cheapest ones that were in the store thank you, I'd rather stay hungry than eat this nightmare!!! no devices, napkins, who are you selling food to? the animals or the people?!’
I came here last night as part of a group and I have serious concerns about food safety. This restaurant is DIRTY. Dust is caked onto the wall decorations. Moreover, the servers constantly put food on wrong tables before putting them on the right table. I didn’t realize you had to pay for and request bread. I grabbed a piece from the basket the waiter left on my table. Upon realizing the mistake, he then put that same basket on a different table. The food is also of a poor quality. It is very over-seasoned, leading me to believe the restaurant is trying disguise low quality food. All the sides are also very carb heavy (potatoes, onion rings, etc), indicating that the restaurant is cutting corners.
I had a very disappointing experience with the waitress at this restaurant. She actually demanded a $30 tip, which I found completely unprofessional and inappropriate. She even said that with the amount I was planning to leave, she wouldn’t be able to support her children. That kind of comment should never be directed at a customer. A tip should reflect the quality of service, and in this case, the service was poor — she barely checked on our table. It’s not the customer’s responsibility to make up for low wages. Very uncomfortable and unpleasant experience overall.
