When we enters we were prompted to enter our names at the kiosk. Not exactly wanting to give Yelp any more of our info. We did wait 10 min and were seated and served right away. We had several dishes, some where authentic, some seem modified to suit there recipe verses traditional taste. The sauces were the same some were traditional and some seemed modified. So if you are looking for very authentic, I would say maybe they changed things based upon a region or family recipe.
Wanted to visit this place for a long time, and finally was able to, as I happened to visit another place nearby. Got there around 12pm. Waited for about 10 -15 minutes to be seated, even though there were empty tables. Food is good, but not at the "excellent" level. Staff are very friendly, albeit busy.
I'm from out of town, but will make sure I can have dinner here at least once while I'm in SoCal. Dont skip on the chicken satay 🤩. Today's curry lamb is peak flavor. Really yum.
Big restaurant with many servers. Food very tasty and portion is reasonable. Pricing is on a pricier side though. Would recommend Roti, Hai-nan rice, and chicken satay.
For someone who has spent an extensive amount of time in SE Asia, this Malaysian restaurant is absolutely spot on with flavor and taste. Warm, casual, setting; on my go-to list!
This Malaysian restaurant really hit the spot! Everything we ordered was packed with flavor — the satay skewers were juicy and came with a delicious peanut sauce, the char kway teow was smoky and well-balanced, the Hainan chicken was tender with three great sauces, and the kangkung stir-fry was perfectly spiced. We ended with a refreshing bowl of cendol that wasn’t too sweet — just right. The only downside is that service was a bit slow, but the food more than made up for it. Definitely worth the wait. Will come back for sure!
The food is delicious with reasonable price. Make sure to book seats to avoid wait-time. Will definitely come back for the Hainan Chicken.
Fantastic food. Depth of spices was amazing. The gluten-free menu had many options. I plan to eat there again. Many tables were occupied by 530 p.m. on Saturday.
Its really great restaurant. I have tried about 10 different dishes and everything was good. And the servers were really nice. I cant remember names of the dishes but definitely, i would revisit this place again
This is the best Malaysian food ever I’ve tried since I’ve been is US. I’ve always missed really authentic taste back from my town and I am so happy that I came to find out about Belacan Grill. Highly recommended if you are looking to try Malaysian food this is the place to go. I wish I live closer, that would be my daily go to place.
As an Indonesian food fan, I'd say this place is great. Love all my dishes. The pierced lips waitress and the young mixed guy at the front was super friendly and fun when my "sister" and I stopped by recently.

My favorite Malaysian restaurant in Socal. Best salted fish fried rice, okra with belacan sauce, curry laksa, roti canai and many more. The waiters and hosts are the friendliest people.
I can’t believe I just found this restaurant. The laksa brought me back to my college time, it’s sooo authentic! I can’t wait to try out every dish in the menu

All delicious dishes! Staff is great. Parking is convenient.
Amazing Malaysian restaurant with great service and even better food! We enjoyed a delicious meal in the presence and caring and attentive staff. I loved the obvious classics; such as curry laska, kangkong, chicken/beef satay, and of course roti canai! I was the only person in our group who wasn’t already a fan of this establishment, but I can assure you that I am now! (No pictures because everyone sitting near me was elder so I felt bad)
Food was nicely seasoned. Didn't have to wait long even though we didn't RSVP beforehand. Ordered roti canai, honey sesame beef, belacan fried rice, and spicy curry laksa. The roti had a nice crispness that we liked. The laksa wasn't spicy at all. Sesame beef was soft tender with a bit of crispiness. Staff were attentive and prompt. Would come back again to try their other menu items. It's also right next to a bakery too

Belacan Grill in Tustin is a hidden gem for Malaysian cuisine. We ordered a variety of dishes and were impressed by the quality and authenticity of the flavors overall. We started with the chicken and beef satay, and they were excellent—grilled to perfection, juicy, and served with flavorful dipping sauces that were rich, nutty, and had just the right hint of spice. The roti with curry sauce was another great appetizer. The Char Kway Teow was good, though a bit milder in flavor than expected. While the noodles had a nice texture and were cooked well, we would’ve liked a bit more depth or spice. Still, it made for a satisfying dish overall. The highlight of the meal was Belacan Fried Rice—absolutely packed with umami and perfectly stir-fried with a mix of shrimp, chicken, and vegetables. The shrimp paste flavor was bold but well-balanced, making it one of the best fried rice dishes we’ve had in a while. We finished with the Coconut Curry Laksa Noodle Soup, and it was incredible. The broth was rich, creamy, and full of spice and depth. Combined with noodles, tofu, and chicken, it was hearty, comforting, and left us craving more. Service was friendly and efficient, and the atmosphere was relaxed but welcoming. If you're looking to explore Malaysian flavors or are already a fan, Belacan Grill is well worth the visit. We’ll definitely be back—especially for that laksa and fried rice!
The wait is usually quite long for dinner. Suggest to line up virtually using Yelp Waitlist before going to the restaurant during dinner time - this might save you of waiting outside 30+ mins. Service was slow when we went there for dinner. After bringing out the dishes, they “forgot” us until we asked for the bill. We wished the service was better. Food reviews: 1. Roti Canai - Meh. Don’t think it was made in house. Curry dip is okay. You can skip this appetizer. 2. Curry Puff - Meh. Made in house but small. You will be eating mostly crust and not much filling. The filling was just potatoes. You can skip this appetizer. 3. Char Kway Teow - 9.5/10 Yummy. This dish is authentic and the best dish tonight. Noodles charred slightly to give it the perfect taste and texture. Ingredients were eggs, shrimp, tender chicken pieces, and perfect amount of soy bean sprouts. Would have been better with slightly more noodles. 4. Ampang Yong Tofu - 8/10 Good. We chose the mild curry version. It came with generous amounts of tofu stuffed with fish paste. Also inside the curry were okra, bell peppers, onions and chili. You might opt for clear broth if you don’t want the heavier coconut curry sauce. We didn’t get the chance to try the desert, but they have the typical Malaysian Chendol, Ice Kacang, and Fried Banana. See the photos below.

We came in on a Wednesday around 6:45. We waited about 20 mins for a table. We started with the roti and calamari both were delicious. For entrees we ordered the nasi goreng fried rice which was my favorite dish. Highly recommend! The hainan chicken was good too. The sauces it came with were subtle, I was hoping for more flavor since the fried rice was so flavorful. Our table was wobbly and it was a bothersome while eating but a server came by to refill our waters and noticed the table was wobbly and pushed it against the wall for us and that fixed the issue.
The food was good. I have had better tasting Malaysian with better presentation in other areas of the US, however this is what's available locally so I tried to use a bit of objectivity in this review. I typically gage reviews for Malaysian by their Rendang, which traditionally has to simmer for a long time to develop the flavors. Texture and color. The Rendang here was pale and the flavor was topical, not deep into the meat. The cut of beef used did not seem to be the best choice and had a fibrous makeup. Typically I have Rendang made of short rib meat, very dark in color as a result of simmering for at least 4 hours, permeated with flavor and thallo fat. I also had the lemongrass soup that resembled Thai Tom yum, but with richer flavor. It was very good. The other dish I tasted was orange rind chicken and that was pretty basic Asian deep fried fare.
I recently dined at Belacan Grill - Malaysian Bistro, and it offered a vibrant and authentic introduction to Malaysian cuisine in Orange County. Located along 17th Street in Tustin, the restaurant has a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere that reflects the casual yet flavorful nature of Malaysian dining. The space feels relaxed and approachable, allowing diners to focus on exploring the bold and complex flavors that define the cuisine. Malaysian cooking is known for its layered use of spices, aromatics, and fermented ingredients, and the menu here showcases many of those traditional elements. Dishes frequently combine garlic, ginger, lemongrass, chili, and shrimp paste to create rich and aromatic flavor profiles. One of the highlights of the meal was the depth of seasoning across the dishes, where savory, spicy, and slightly sweet components worked together to produce balanced and memorable flavors. Noodle and rice dishes were particularly notable. These staples are central to Malaysian cuisine, and the versions served here demonstrated careful preparation with well-balanced sauces and properly cooked noodles. The dishes carried a satisfying mix of smoky wok flavors, aromatic spices, and savory depth that reflects traditional Malaysian street food influences. Seafood and meat dishes also showed strong execution. Proteins were cooked properly and paired with sauces that emphasized the aromatic complexity typical of Malaysian cooking. The dishes managed to deliver bold flavors without overwhelming the palate, allowing the ingredients to remain distinct within each preparation. Another highlight of the restaurant is the variety available across the menu. Malaysian cuisine draws influences from Malay, Chinese, and Indian culinary traditions, and the menu reflects this diversity. This allows diners to experience multiple styles of seasoning and preparation within a single meal. Service during the visit was attentive and helpful. Staff members were knowledgeable about the menu and offered guidance for guests who might be unfamiliar with Malaysian dishes. The pacing of the meal felt comfortable and well coordinated. Overall, Belacan Grill delivers a flavorful and authentic Malaysian dining experience with complex seasoning, balanced dishes, and welcoming service. It stands out as a strong destination for anyone interested in exploring Malaysian cuisine in the Orange County area.

Some of the food we ordered were good and some were not, the overall experience we had was to the best but missed some flavors of experience that we used to have all these years . On other side prices being bit expensive now
Despite the glowing reviews, my experience at Belacan Malaysian Grill was a letdown. We ordered the Crab Rangoon and the $20 Tangerine Peel Chicken, but neither dish impressed us; the flavors were mediocre and certainly didn’t justify the price tag. It was particularly frustrating that a $20 entree doesn't even include rice, forcing us to order the coconut rice as a separate add-on. While the ambiance is decent and the ample free parking is a convenient plus, the service was lackluster and didn't make us feel particularly welcome. Between the underwhelming food and the poor value for the money, I won’t be heading back anytime soon. Purely my experience.
Food was average, not authentic. Ordered salted fish fried rice, the chicken and shrimp were plain. Char keow teow tasted so so. If you’re Malaysian missing home food, I’d not recommend.
