It's a lovely place nothing is to much trouble. Perfect 👍 views are great also
We absolutely loved our two night stay here b&b & evening meal…top class menus, food was divine, staff were so so helpful, we took our 20 month Labrador and she was made so so welcome! Spa and pool, after a long days walking was just the ticket! Room was beautiful even though it was selected “dog friendly” room it’s was impeccable! Stunning views of lake Windermere as you can see! Beautiful setting and amazing gardens! We loved the Hiltwaite and are returning next week for our wedding anniversary + pup in tow!
We recently had a two night mid-week break at this lovely hotel. The views from the bedroom, restaurant and bar were wonderful. The staff were all very friendly and efficient...a particular mention must go to Louise, Santa and Claire. The evening meals and breakfasts were delicious.
Lovely staff who put in the extra effort to make my partner's birthday getaway special. The pool and sauna are perfect for relaxing and availability is typically good also. Personal highlights were the amazing view of the nearby area and the scrumptious breakfast provided 🥞.
Wonderful stay with stunning views! We had an amazing experience at Hillthwaite Hotel during our one-night stay. The location is absolutely breathtaking — perched perfectly to offer stunning views of Windermere and the surrounding landscape. From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel so welcome. They even upgraded our room, which was a lovely surprise and made our stay even more special. The room itself was spacious, beautifully maintained, and very comfortable. The food was outstanding — delicious and well presented. Every part of our stay felt thoughtfully taken care of, and it truly made for a memorable getaway. Highly recommended if you're visiting the Lake District and want a peaceful, luxurious escape with warm hospitality.
Beautiful hotel with lovely, welcoming staff and fabulous food. A hidden gem - can highly recommend
I have just had the most lovely afternoon tea with friends, using a gift voucher. Booking was very easy, friendly helpful staff. The food was fantastic, the service first class and the location was unbelievable. The views were amazing. We all said that the hotel gave off a cosy inviting atmosphere and we will definitely return. Thank you everyone you are doing a great job.
My mom and I stayed 2 nights and enjoyed a lot in the hotel. The receptionists are so nice and the view is perfect. Parking is available and easy here. Dinner and breakfast are perfect. We will definitely come back.
I had wonderful experience staying here. Tasteful decor, good service. Made to order quality breakfast. Clean hotel/ bedrooms and modern and spacious attached bathroom. Good service, amazing views. However, swimming pool was rather cold, sauna not warm enough and steam sauna out of order. But overall I enjoyed my stay and would stay here again. My favourite part is looking at views from breakfast and lobby area and sitting by the real log fires adding a cosy feel. Hotel could do with spa, massage anf beauty treatments.
Couldn't fault it at all. From check in to check out there wasn't a single issue. Service was friendly and efficient. The room was a cosy double and it was cosy, perfect for one night! Lovely bedding and bed and had all the amenities one requires. The pool is small but perfectly adequate for a quick dip, with a good booking system in place. We booked the 2 course dinner which was lovely and of good quality. Presentation was on point and the service was warm and friendly. Great views from the lounges. Breakfast was really nice, perfect after a parkrun, as we were able to book a 10am slot and we were hungry by then! Combined with the special offer they had on this place gets a 5! Thank you team!
The rooms are clean and spacious. The bed was extremely comfortable, and a good nights sleep was most definitely had. The view from room 12 is spectacular. The staff are friendly and professional, and nothing is too much trouble. The afternoon tea was lovely, and breakfast was incredible. 100% recommend. Just a short 15 min walk up to Windermere or down to Bowness.
The hotel is absolutely wonderful, you have views onto Windermere on the side we stayed on and it's very beautiful from the breakfast hall. The rooms are very nice and well prepared and the beds are made, new towels provided each day. The breakfast is varied with fantastic options to choose from, as a vegetarian there is plenty and there are options to remove the meat from the breakfasts. The most outstanding part is the staff are all fantastically attentive, polite and courteous. I will 100% be coming back for all holidays to the Lake Districts. The only thing I would recommend is try not to hill start on the turn into the parking, it is a little tricky.
Most welcoming hotel with lovely views, great food & 5* service. Our bedroom was very clean & comfortable bed which meant we slept well. Well maintained throughout, lovely decor and bathrooms. 10 min walk down to the town shops and lake but as you’re on the hill it means a 15/ 20 minute walk back up to the hotel. Which is fine if you are a good walker. We always found plenty of parking too. Could not fault anything and we would definitely go back in the future.
Absolutely wish I could rate higher than 5 stars🌟 ! The hotel is absolutely stunning, beautiful decor, every where is clean and well presented. Everyone we came across that worked here was polite and helpful and engaged in conversation. The views from the rooms and the terraced area is absolutely stunning. We were even given a complimentary glass of prosecco the evening my partner proposed and congratulated by all staff we saw 💕 We had the full package of room, breakfast and dinner along with having booked afternoon tea too. Each meal was of high standard and high quality. Dietary restrictions were considered and I was informed of what I couldn't have and the afternoon was adapted to ensure I didn't have any allergen foods. The bar was well priced and had a nice range of drinks to enjoy. The access to the pool and sauna was a wonderful extra, we enjoyed a lovely swim along with relaxing in the sauna. The pool area has full changing rooms and we were provided with towels. Being able to have the area booked for just us was lovely and made for a really relaxing time. The room it's self was absolutely to die for, free standing bath tub, comfortable bed and just beautiful to look at! We had such a good night sleep both nights we stayed here! We spent time relaxing on the terrace and enjoying the view. We both agree we will be back as it was worth it in all aspects. Thank you for a wonderful stay!
Came here for Afternoon tea as had a voucher, was very easy to book and prepay online, the food was incredible and the service equally as good, the italian bartender/server was very friendly and helpful, can’t comment on the rooms but based off the place i’m sure they were lovely! Such lovely views which is always a bonus
We had 2 amazing nights here. The room was spacious and super clean - like the rest of the hotel! The staff were very helpful and friendly and the food was great. The real reason we loved the hotel though was for the location. The views from our room and from the restaurant were spectacular. Perched high above lake Windermere in between Bowness and the town of Windermere there's lots of parking space available and lovely walks down to the lake or up to the town. The breakfast is from a menu instead of a buffet and might be a bit confusing at first, but the quality of the food was fantastic throughout.
An excellent hotel, located on a hill which means you get some excellent views over Windermere! Stayed in room 36, room was nice and the bed was very comfortable! Shower is extremely powerful which is great! Room was replenished everyday with water and some biscuits (some places don’t do that every day). I had to turn the heating down and open the windows as it was a bit like a sauna in the room but that was my personal preference. Pool was good, used it twice and it was quiet both times which meant I could get a bit of swimming in. Sauna was great as well and changing facilities in pool area were excellent. Having a drink or coffee in the conservatory was a bit of a fav thing for me to do and the food was excellent and consistently good as well! Staff were very friendly and a credit to the hotel! A great hotel in a brilliant location.
This was our fifth visit - it's got to be good to keep us coming back. A well-run hotel in a beautiful setting, with a pool, log fire and an excellent restaurant. It's not far from Orrest Head Viewpoint and has a similar, spectacular view. Lovely walks from the hotel and it's on a great bus route, so you need never touch your car. Friendly and efficient staff make it the perfect place to stay.
We had a fantastic short visit here. A lovely hotel, nice decor, clean with stunning views. The staff in particular are absolutely fantastic. The woman on reception at the time even dried our pram with a cloth while we left it to dry by the entrance radiator. Very welcoming and family friendly. The food was also fantastic. I would have loved to give a full 5 on everything but for the sake of honesty the final breakfast before leaving was awful. Really quite bizzare as everything had been spot on up to that point including breakfast the day before where my wife had the same dish. I’m putting this down to a brief lack of focus in the kitchen and that small hiccup won’t stop me fully recommending this hotel. We will definitely be back!
This hotel was beyond amazing!! Lovely room, comfy bed, beautiful bathroom!!!! Customer service was OUTSTANDING, they were amazing, they were so lovely and very attentive to all needs and wants. Presentation of the food was fantastic, almost like a 5 star restaurant, served quickly! Breakfast was beautiful! So many options, the bar was a great touch, cocktails were definitely worth the price unlike other places, and definitely the best cocktails I’ve ever had! They put all other types to shame! The pool was also a nice gem, 30 minutes alone in the pool with your partner or the group you went with, sauna was nice! Very pretty, and overall the hotel looked stunning, I am SHOCKED this isn’t recognised more often, when I come back in future, I will be loyal to this hotel, and will be willing to stay here again, I’m not even going to think about trying other hotels, that is how impressed I was! My partner and I we’re definitely satisfied!!
Fantastic hotel, beautifully decorated and fixtures, all staff very very pleasant and polite. The restaurant is beautiful and the food was devine, the bedroom was very classy wonderful design and comfort. Would love to stay again and recommend it to any one 10 out 10
We had afternoon tea at the Hiplthwaite Hotel. There were plenty of yummy food to tuck in to.
What a find! Beautiful room with a fabulous view. Very friendly and helpful staff Lorretta is a great asset to the hotel, she showed us room 15 and 16. Which are fabulous and we upgraded to room 16.what a lovely stay we had. Will definitely be back. Thank you. Jayne and Stuart x
A lovely hotel. The views from the lounge and dining room are absolutely stunning. Both the breakfast and dinner offer an excellent choice, cooked and perfectly presented. Travelling with a friend, I booked 2 single rooms. The biggest concern in staying in a single room is that you end up in a child size room and a tiny bed- not so at the Hillthwaite. My room was lovely with a queen sized bed. The room was well decorated in warm, restful colours with a superb, very modern ensuite. There is a little dip pool and sauna, a delight after a days walking. All the staff are lovely, easy to talk to and will help with anything required. Overall, a very relaxed hotel with a lovely atmosphere AND dog friendly! Superb value. Definitely my 'go to' place in the Lakes.
Very homely hotel. Staff were attentive & adaptable to our needs. Had a lovely stay & would certainly consider going again. Small floor in the room we stayed in was there wasn’t an electrical socket at the dressing table which would have been handy but coped! Thanks guys. Lovely weekend!
It is high up and has beautiful views of Lake Windermere. It is a lovely warm and welcoming hotel. Ideal for walks both easy and more difficult. You need to take a mixture of clothing with you. The hotel has a small swimming pool and sauna and there is a booking system so you have the pool to yourselves. The cuisine is excellent.
We had a pleasant stay. The hotel has a lovely view. The room is clean and cozy. The staff is professional. The breakfast atmosphere, food, and service are great 👍🏼. It is almost 15 minutes walk to both centres. We’ll definitely be back.
This is an exceptional place to stay and enjoy the wonderful location. Friendly, helpful, attentive staff were always available. The rooms are very clean and cosy and the bed super comfortable. We enjoyed a fabulous dinner with a great local singer adding to the ambiance. The food was absolutely fantastic as was the wonderful breakfast the following morning. I highly recommend this hotel and hope to return some day.
What an amazing stay. Food views staff just exceptional. We had our dog with us. Stayed dig friendly room which was comfortable spotless. Treats for dog. A large grass area outside for her to play. We could not fault it. No view from our bedroom .but did not deter from such a wonderful place the team here have something special keep doing what your doing. Staying again but leaving our spoilt rotten dog at home so we can enjoy a room with a view.thank you team hillthwsite.
I booked two nights here on a work trip. The location was perfectly located in between Windermere and Bowness. The room was spotless and the bathroom was like new. The best part was how friendly the staff were. They were very polite and extremely helpful. The food was also really nice. It was a pleasure to stop here and I will be definitely booking to stay here again. I highly recommend
Had to find a hotel at short notice as original booking was very disappointing. All Staff extremely helpful. Got a free upgrade on our room as we were celebrating our wedding anniversary. Room was lovely, with views over lake Windermere. Restaurant was excellent and very reasonably priced. On advice of staff, we took a bus ride (only £2) which gave me stunning views that I would have missed if driving myself. If we visit this area again, this will be our first choice of hotel. Couldn't fault it. Highly recommended.
Just a beautiful treat for my Mum's Birthday ❤️. Friendly and very helpful staff who made sure our rooms fully accommodated our needs. Also the wonderful food and the superb attentive service from Graziano ❤️
Took my mum here for afternoon tea for her birthday. Brilliant service, staff were very welcoming and helpful. We were seated in a window with excellent views over the lake, the hotel is situated on a great spot for views of the area. The food was excellent, great scones. Attention to detail when we requested vegetarian. The lounge we were seated in was also dog friendly so we were able to bring our dog too, I've found this to be rare when going for afternoon tea elsewhere. Overall a fantastic experience!!
Just returned from a superb couple of days break taking my mother away for her 90th birthday. Everything about the hotel is lovely and of a high standard, all of the the decor is of a very high standard and the hotel gives off a relaxing vibe. Super lounges, bar and restaurant and great views. Breakfast choices were great and evening meals in the resturant had a good choice and great quality. The staff are so nice & helpful especially with my elderley mother & aunty. Will definatly be returning but just with the wife lol.
Just had an amazing 2 night break here and would highly recommend it. The service was excellent, food brilliant and the room and view was stunning. It's a small, family run hotel and it feels very homely. Quiet, peaceful and in a great location.
From start to finish our experience on our one night stay was exceptionally enjoyable. We were welcomed royally to the hotel. My wife enjoyed the pool facility. A fortunate sunny break enabled us to enjoy a glass of wine on the impressive balcony. The room was well-appointed with a super king-size bed which proved to be super comfortable! My sea bream, with wonderfully crispy skin, was beautifully accompanied by a bottle of Gavi di Gavi. The breakfast hit the spot and we left very satisfied. The staff were friendly and engaging at all times. Oh…..I almost forgot. The views are to die for! I wholeheartedly recommend this hotel.
We enjoyed a fabulous night here on one of their winter packages. Everything about the hotel is lovely and the staff were all so friendly and welcoming. The location is perfect for wandering around Windermere and Bowness. The evening meal and breakfast were fantastic and the whole hotel is tastefully decorated for Christmas making it feel really special. We would definitely recommend this hotel.
Me and my husband had a wonderful 2 night stay at Hillthwaite. It’s a beautiful and comfortable hotel with stunning views over Windermere. The breakfasts, dinner and drinks were all perfect. Particular mention must go to the delightful waitresses Claire and Louise who do a brilliant job. We would highly recommend this hotel and hope to be back soon.
My 11 year-old son and I stayed for the weekend, and it was the perfect hotel for us with a lovely swimming pool. Staff was helpful, room was gorgeous and my son thought the TV by the bath was fantastic! Highly recommend and would definitely return.
Enjoyable stay, rooms were very warm but managed to open a window. Lovely views.
We enjoyed a great 2 night stay here. The rooms are spotlessly clean, the food is great and the staff are all really friendly and provide efficient and thoughtful customer service. One of our group is vegan, and the waitresses remembered to bring non dairy spread/milk each meal time. The views over the rooftops to the lake are spectacular and we were lucky to have clear evenings for stunning sunsets.
It was my first time to bring my dog to stay with me at a hotel. Many friends warned me not all the hotels were really pet friendly as they said, but Hillthwaite Hotel was the one I would recommend to any pet owners! Everyone here was so friendly, especially the lady at the counter of the restaurant. She had a lovely smile and always encouraged me to bring my dog in the restaurant, even she knew my dog was a little bit energetic. Thank you for all staff here. My partner, my dog and I had fantastic nights because of all of you!
We stayed at Hillthwaite for 2 nights with our dog and was given Garden Room 2 (a classic double room). We had a lovely stay, the room was comfortable and clean. Breakfast was very nice with a good selection. All staff were friendly and helpful. Our only negative comment would be the shower pressure! I mentioned it to reception so hopefully it is something that can be sorted. We would stay again and would recommend the hotel! Thank you for a lovely stay!
When here for four nights. The room was 10/10 . The food was fantastic every meal was wonderful. The service was 10/10 . Will definitely come back . The staff were the best staff in a hotel. The room we're clean and tidy. You will have to come here . It like being part of the family
Lovely hotel to stay. Staff are friendly and welcoming. Views are beautiful. Rooms are lovely and clean. Food is excellent.
Came last year and gave it 5 stars. I think we were extremely lucky last year to have a large room in Tendal Howe which had amazing views. I enjoyed it so much that I really wanted to come back again this year for my birthday. This year has been slightly disappointing due to staying in a small room overlooking the courtyard with no views. The decor was lovely, the room was spotlessly clean and the bath was amazing, however the view let it down and also not having proper curtains, only a net one, in which i struggled to sleep due to the light coming from what im guessing was the laundry room, all night. I explained about this to the receptionist on departure and she was quite rude about it. I am not sure we will stay again. All the other staff were lovely and welcoming, especially the two women who serve at breakfast. We saw them last year too. Very polite and efficient. And breakfast was delicious.
Lovely hotel, but our room is very small Food average. Staff friendly. Situated on top of a hill. Not suitable if any walking difficulties. I would not recommend.
Great hotel however our last day there on bank holiday Monday (6th may) was less than ideal. Most staff were great and friendly however the chef at breakfast that day was the most incompetent and inept chef i have ever experienced. Wanted a well done fried egg and it came runny, then sent it back and it came back burnt and still runny. I cannot comprehend the incompetence and feel like it was done out of spite. Instead of being spiteful how about getting it right the first time and listen to your customers!
AVOID at all costs: - Breakfast was very poor: everything seemed microwaved rather than freshly made - Room was clearly not what is shown in the pictures, and had no views (or actually, views to a parking... I presume you can have views if select better rooms, but to be clear the lower-cost ones do not) - Room was rather dirty - Swimming pool is tiny and facilities were dirty And not to say: They charged us an extra night and refused to refund it. Waiters are very nice, that I must say.
Extremely Disappointed - Not Worth the Money! Date of stay: Saturday, 26th April 2025 Booking Reference: 4642372513 I paid £180 for a room with dinner and breakfast at Windermere Hillthwaite Hotel, expecting a relaxing and pleasant stay at what is advertised as a "4-star hotel". Unfortunately, the experience was awful from the moment we arrived. First, there was no one ready to check us in. The receptionist was seated at her desk doing something else and we had to stand and wait — even though she clearly saw us. When we finally got checked in, we were given a room that was absolutely horrible: dark, depressing, with no natural light, and facing the back of the hotel kitchen. It looked nothing like what we had paid for. I had to go back downstairs to complain. Instead of an apology or a proper solution, they charged us an extra £50 for a different room! At that point, we had no choice but to accept, being tired after long travels. The second room was slightly better but still far from acceptable. The bedding was dirty, full of black spots and brown stains (whether chocolate or dirt, I don't know, and honestly didn't want to find out). The bathroom had hair all over the corners — clear signs that it hadn’t been properly cleaned. To make things worse, when we went to the restaurant, they told us dinner was not included — even though it clearly was supposed to be part of our booking. We had to go out and find somewhere else to eat, spending even more money. For breakfast, it was not a buffet as you would expect in a 4-star hotel. You had to ring to book a table and order individually. The only positive was the lady who served breakfast — she was very polite and pleasant — and the receptionist, after the initial attitude, was okay. Overall, this place is absolutely not a 4-star hotel — it’s more like a basic guest house pretending to be something it’s not. I feel completely ripped off. £230 (£180 + £50 extra charge) for a dirty room, no dinner, and a completely disappointing stay. Avoid this place! There are much better and cleaner options in Windermere for the same or even lower price.
