I've lived in Santa Cruz for a while now, and no matter where I go, or what I try, I always end up coming back here. Taqueria Michoacan is without a doubt, the best place in Santa Cruz for authentic Mexican food. They are family-owned and operated, and you can taste the history, love, and dedication in every bite. Fresh ingredients, very reasonable prices, and probably some of the best fresh hot sauces.

Monica is the reason we keep coming back! From the moment I first visited, and asked for an egg burrito that wasn’t on the menu, I was hooked 💕. She added my silly burrito to her menu, and I always get this. I also enjoy the flan and the Chile relleno. Great service, great food, consistent quality. Don’t come here! I want this place all to myself!

Like the sign says: Best burritos in town! Great fish tacos, too. The owners are so gracious and welcoming, and we are super lucky to have such high quality (and, I'm assuming, authentic) Mexican food in our neighborhood.

My wife and I have been going to Michoacan for years. Great authentic food, and very friendly service. The four tortillas nearly melt in your mouth. My favorite is the chicken mole super burrito. My wife like the BBQ chicken and nacho fries. Best Taqueria in Santa Cruz!

Best burritos in town! Not to much money , all their recipes and ingredients are great. Authentic and the chef is a good one also a Santa Cruz local as well.

Michoacan has some of the best burritos in town. I also appreciate the array of other items they serve, including seafood. But most of all, the fact that the staff remembers what me and my co-workers order when we visit for lunch really shows us that they want our business. The line can sometimes snake out the door, depending on the time, but that's the case with any of the amazing taquerias we have in Santa Cruz, and it's definitely evidence that it's a quality establishment. I consider myself as close to a taqueria connoisseur as a Gringo can get, and I place Michoacan in the top 3 for the area, for sure. Also, big points for using cabbage in the super burritos instead of lettuce (keeps it crunchy instead of getting soggy, way better). Plus, their corn tortillas which are open-faced and with cheese, beans, and cabbage on top. This is the best style of quesadilla, in my opinion. If you're visiting the area, maybe spending time at the nearby beaches, check this place out. And if you're a local and haven't been here yet, I don't even know what you're doing.

The Greek philosopher Plato popularized and defended the Theory of Forms. This philosophical framework contends that the physical world we interact with is a mere imitation of the non-phyiscal, perfect essences of all things, which exist in an abstract plane outside of our understanding. What we see around us is a cloudy reflection of the perfect forms, like a man watching shadows on a cave wall, and while we may approach complete understanding of the forms that serve as the foundation of reality, we will never truly perceive them. This was only partially correct. The Perfect Form of a Carne Asada Super Burrito exists, and it is served on a daily basis at Taqueria Michoacan. I have existed on this planet for the better part of 3 decades. Over that time, and over a number of visits and extended residences in the greater California Bay Area, San Diego, Central Texas, Northern Mexico, and even an ill-advised excursion to Canada, I have eaten a number of Carne Asada Super Burritos that amounts to the thousands. "May I have an Asada Super Burrito?" I have asked. "¿Podría tener un super burrito con asada?" I have asked in Spanish. "Can you make me one that won't give me diarrhea?" I have asked at Chipotle. The vast majority of these burrito experiences have been remarkably positive. Not a single one has even begun to approach the quality of Taqueria Michoacan. Scholars of the New Testament are divided on whether Jesus ever made a burrito, but there is little debate that if he had, it would have tasted like the Asada Super Burrito at Taqueria Michoacan. Eating this burrito is a spiritual experience, a true communion with the divine. The delicately folded homemade tortilla is artfully crafted to serve as both a reliable structural matrix for the burrito's delicious filling while contributing to the flavor in ways that transcend what a tortilla is expected to be. The juicy, tender Carne Asada is both firm and yielding in all the right ways, and challenges the taste buds with a delightfully balanced spice, reminding one of a strong yet sensual lover. The cabbage provides a satisfying crunch, perfectly complementing the smoothly softened beans that mix with just the right amount of rice to fill out the flavor profile of this rare treasure. The sour cream and avocado will make you yearn for the shores of Lake Pátzcuaro, where the winds sweeping over the fertile plains from the great blue Pacific create a peace that escapes words. I have ordered roughly 300 Carne Asada Super Burritos from Taqueria Michoacan. Every time, it has been the best burrito I have ever eaten. I have been told there are other items on the menu. I have no idea if this is true. The price is beyond reasonable for sole possession of a piece of culinary art on par with Beethoven's 9th symphony. I would give my firstborn child for the Carne Asada Super Burrito at Taqueria Michoacan, without hesitation. I would kill a man for this Burrito, 11 bucks is an absolute bargain. For years, I have eaten the Carne Asada Super Burrito at Taqueria Michoacan. For years, I will continue to eat the Carne Asada Super Burrito at Taqueria Michoacan. When I die, my only regret will be that I did not eat more of the Carne Asada Super Burrito from Taqueria Michoacan. I cannot recommend the Carne Asada Super Burrito from Taqueria Michoacan more strongly, and I can only hope you try it and learn what it means to become more than human.

I don't ever do reviews. But for the micho! I will do! These guys are family owned and operated for as long as I know. I grew up right down the street from this place. For almost 20 years... The burrito is exactly the same and always perfect. Imho the cabbage makes the burrito the daaaaank! The vibe is like your uncle and autie love you and feed you the best family food ever. The owners are so sweet and always ask how my family is doing and ask about how life is . They really care about the people they feed and their community. Everytime I come back "home" I go-to michoacan. EVERYTIME. I highly recommend this place to anyone who loves Mexican food. It really is THE BEST! watch out for Xmas time though. They go-to Mexico for almost a month and it closes for the season. Which I respect and love that they can take time to enjoy life. Cuz, man they work hard everyday open to close. Cheers to the best burrito and to the amazing people that make their American dream a reality in Santa Cruz!

OMG SO GOOD! We just left and I'm on a total food high! We had sopes and cabeza tacos, and I simply never wanted to stop eating. Flowing Wells area for those in town, and not far from the highway for those passing through!

Taqueria Michoacan is the best mexican food I've had outside of Mexico itself bar none. My only complaint is they're a little stingy on the salsa, but at that point I'm cherry picking. These guys rock, and if you like Mexican food they're a must visit location.

One of my favorite taquerias in Santa Cruz. You can't go wrong with any of the options on the menu, but I'm very partial to the Chile Verde or Al Pastor burrito. The tortilla is so buttery and delicious, the meat flavorful and tender, and they use cabbage which I love. Been coming here for going on 20 years and it's always my favorite. ❤️🙏

I have driven past this spot many times over the years, not ever stopping, mainly due to parking and not ever eating here, not knowing if I will like it. One of my friends that has similar taste in food said it is delicious, so I tried it out and I LOVE the food. It is so tasty and I love that it is close by for me. The carne asada plate is my absolute favorite, I love it with flour tortillas. The meat is perfectly flavored and the flavor of the grilled red onions is a nice touch and I don’t even like onions. I love the flavor, I just don’t care to eat them. The rice and beans is so delicious. This is the only place I really like the rice, from most other places I ask for no rice and all beans. They also have a great selection of drinks to choose from. I always go for the bottled Coca Cola since it pairs so nicely with the carne asada plate. The salsa is pretty spicy but still really good and I love the guacamole, it has a really nice flavor with a little kick. It is a family-owned business and the owners work here as well as family members. Everyone is always really friendly and the food is out quick. They recently added a dessert stand from a third party named Laura’s Sweet Side. Very cute set up and presentation. Cakes all look super delicious. I am not eating a lot of sweets right now so I did not try anything but it looked like lots of things have been purchased and are popular. Love coming here. You can dine here, they have a few tables inside and a few spots to sit outside as well. Definitely try them out if you have not eaten here yet. Everything on the menu is delicious.

The food here is excellent, easily some of the best you’ll find in Santa Cruz and it’s one of my favorite spots in town for a burrito. Many of the one-star reviews complain about “bad customer service,” but a lot of those criticisms feel misplaced. Some seem to come from people trying to eat food bought elsewhere, use the lot for beach parking, or expecting a certain type of treatment. The couple who runs the place isn’t overly chatty and can come across as stoic, but the food speaks for itself. If you’re judging by quality alone, this spot delivers.

Had 2 tacos here ( for $8.72) I got a box of round tacos 4 qty, some chicken pieces, rice and beans paste with a lemon slice. Also some tacos and a spicy sauce/ salsa. That was delicious.Clean location and has arrangements to eat out side under tree shade. Service was quick. Had hand sanitizer and employees were wearing mask 😷. they have sprite cans too, it was a good lunch.

The food was yummy, prepared well, fairly priced, and the restaurant is located near the beach. There are quite a few options to satisfy your cravings, and the staff is friendly and fast. There is outdoor and indoor seating, and a good atmosphere for the space. I was thrown off by their credit cards fees though ($1 under $30 and $3.50 over $30), so I was happy I had cash on me.

Great food, especially the burritos and tacos, but the friendliness of the staff is always a question. This is often a turn off for the food for me. Mean people make the food taste way worse than it actually is. It's as if they need to be thanked profusely for selling you a burrito, . . . otherwise get out of the way or go some place else.

S
Scott McClintock

Great cheap Mexican no frills food with a kick. Fish tacos are grilled and piled high with fillings. Nachos are average. Location is close, a few blocks to the beach, you could walk. Hit the spot and satisfied the craving but not worth driving over the hill for.

They only do take out here! There are outdoor benches, but everything is covered in plastic 😢 Otherwise the food is pretty good, but they charge you extra to have basic fajita veggies (onions and bell peppers) in a dish in place of meat which doesn’t make sense.

Ordered : Chicken mole burrito : Used to be 5/5, now down to 3/5 Grilled chicken burrito : Used to be a 4/5, now down to 2/5 Veg tacos : 3/5 Will order again : 3/5 , will give it another try and then decide. This place used to be really good, its chicken mole burrito was one of the best I have ever had. However the taste and flavor of its food has gone down and bland now, don't know what has changed. Also, they are not very accommodating to change requests like having more salsa etc. and their salsa is pretty limited, your choices are red or green one. Other mexican places offer atleast 3 types of salsa, with some of our favorite ones offer 5-6 types.

Food, better than average, tackon fees for using any card is exorbitant. I asked and the girl said it was what Square charged then. I think it would be better if they said we prefer cash but if you use your card we add this fee and *NOT* claim it's what Square charges. Here is what i found about what Square charges: Square's transaction fees vary based on the type of payment, not a flat $3.50 for a $40 transaction. Here's a breakdown of Square's fees for a $40 transaction: In-person transactions (tapped, dipped, or swiped): 2.6% + $0.15. For a $40 transaction: ($40 * 0.026) + $0.15 = $1.04 + $0.15 = $1.19. Online payments: 2.9% + $0.30. For a $40 transaction: ($40 * 0.029) + $0.30 = $1.16 + $0.30 = $1.46. Manually entered card payments (keyed-in or card on file): 3.5% + $0.15. For a $40 transaction: ($40 * 0.035) + $0.15 = $1.40 + $0.15 = $1.55. Invoices: 3.3% + $0.30. For a $40 transaction: ($40 * 0.033) + $0.30 = $1.32 + $0.30 = $1.62. Therefore, depending on how the payment is processed, Square's fees for a $40 transaction would be between $1.19 and $1.62.

Super burritos - bland, lacking flavor and ingredients. No avocado. Fish burrito was nasty - very fishy odor - due to old fish, not fresh. Very disappointing. Won’t be coming back.

Ordered super burritos. Chicken was lacking flavor. Carnitas were super salty. Barely any avocado was present. Used to be good, now flavorless, salty, or lacking ingredients. Chipotle has better flavor than these burritos.

I’ve been to so many tacquerias and never been treated so horribly. I know businesses are having a difficult time right now but there’s no excuse to be so rude to your customers.

M
Mari Ruelas

I used to go there once in a while because I'm not a big fan of taquerias but their asada quesadilla is the only thing I like to eat from their menu, today I was driving by and I asked for the exactly same thing "asada quesadilla" well the mean guy went to the kitchen and told the cook, esta nunca le cambia in English is a rude way to to say "she always ask for the same". It's not his business what I like to eat or not, I'm paying, not asking you to give it to me for free. Never again I'm going there.

So it's my first time coming here... was recommended. The food lacked in flavor... there chile relleno was an omelet. The cashiers didn't seem happy working today maybe she's having an off day, maybe. Over all... for me I won't go back

Sad to say I remember coming here in years past and enjoying it but prices seem high and flavor is low.

J

They are the rudest people ever. Super expensive for not that great of food. Then on top of really horrible customer service. I would never recommend this place.

I have ordered multiple times. They tend to skimp on the meat - whatever it may be. Recently they started to even skimp on the bag of chips, filling it half way and then adding napkins.

It was not very good it did not taste authentic. I'm from New Mexico I know it good authentic Mexican food taste like.

Rude cashier wouldn't even change my burrito when I specifically asked for no sour cream but she put it in anyway she said I can't take that back like that

J

This place has great food, but the worst customer service of ANY Mexican spot in town. They refuse to take orders over the phone, but they don't tell you that, they just wait for you to arrive to pick up your food and THEN they tell you they don't do phone orders. Mistakes are always made with the orders, they make no apologies for having terrible service, I was told "we don't need your business," when I complained about them messing up my order. Again good food, WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER!!

N
Nathan Monroe

The woman at the cashier would not let a child who needed to pee and change her tampon use the restroom unless she bought something. They wouldn’t even let them use the restroom and pay after. Terrible service. Ended up needing to pay 5$ to use the restroom.

Nasty food, horchata was watery & nasty. Dry meat, horrible service and they had the nerve to charge $3 for lime for my tacos. Probably my first review ever but I just had to 🤮

F

We had the super burrito and carne asada tacos. Not worth the price hardly any meat and they put cabbage inside the burrito. The man taking the orders was also rude. Not authentic mexican food.

No parking, luke warm and small food portions really stingy with the chips not worth my money

This place denied my friend and I service after 2 faithful years of going here when we caught the owner in a bad mood. Tacos Moreno's on 41st is better anyways.

Did not really want to place this review. Almost weekly regular here during the pandemic. The food is only ok, nothing special - by bay area standards of a Taqueria. Their quality of food has gone down, and their service has definitely tanked. Unwelcoming people and service unfortunately. Probably taking business for granted, since they get a steady stream of very hungry customers from the beach across the street, and locals due to lack of restaurant choices in the neighborhood. So sad since we always like to support local businesses. Never going back to this restaurant.

Good food BAD VIBES every single time! I'm a repeated customer come here at least 3 times a more a month and continue to be treated with bad customer service. It's making the food taste bad. Don't ever think customer service goes out of style because it doesn't. Plus there's about 40 more Taquria's in Santa Cruz county. I can't give these people my business anymore. If you don't want to be somewhere then don't.

Burrito was not that good at all, Give it a 3 out of 10 I can make better at home. Asada Fries big rip off, very small portion for $15.... NEVER AGAIN!! SAVE YOUR TIME & MONEY!!

I live around the corner and have been coming here forever…. But recently had the Weirdest experience with the owner—first time I’ve ever been gaslighted by a restaurant!!! Got the same order I’ve been buying for 3 years…this time they made it completely differently (blatantly lacking key ingredients). When I came back to explain, she looked at me with a straight face and said they’ve always made it that way. I was speechless—I had literally ordered the same thing a week before with no issues. The silver lining is that this bizarre rude encounter led me to discover nearby Salsa’s over by Peoples coffee. A happy ending! Salsas has a bigger menu (including many vegan options for you vegans out there). Better service and all around fresher ingredients. I will never look back.

The woman at the front(and maybe owner?)is almost always rude and short with you. The last time I went I parked and ordered my food. Took it down to the beach and returned 30 min later only to be told that a tow truck had been called on me because I was parked in their lot. Absolutely zero consideration for a paying customer, you should think twice before parking in their lot. Los Pericos is a better option.

Came in with my baby and husband and we grabbed a high chair and sat down. The staff whispered to each other then ignored us and walked back into the kitchen. About 5 mins later one of the employees came out and staked chairs on the table right in front of us. After staking the entire table of chair she says we’re now taking togo orders only. At this time there were still people eating inside at other tables. I understand they may have been closing soon, but they should have acknowledged us when we walked in and told us that before we got our baby situated and sat down.

Very rude cashier. The guy seemed in a bad mood when we walked in. He would only sell a large drinking cup of salsa w our side of chips. It was so hot we couldn't even eat He wouldn't work w us . Said we needed to buy a whole new one. Who needs a giant salsa for 2 people let alone 2. It was the principle NOT the money.

This restaurant presented us with one of the worst meals that we've ever had. I ordered a breakfast burrito. There were an incredible amount of layers of rolled up white tortilla with maybe two tablespoons of a mixture of beans and potatoes and eggs. There was literally one Pebble shape piece of egg in there. And I asked to have some cheese added to it and that I would pay for it and there was absolutely no taste of cheese. Is it a matter of fact it was just absolutely no taste. My partner ordered the enchiladas with chicken and again they were absolutely tasteless. The portion of that was so tiny it might have filled up a child but certainly not an adult. They served a side of salsa and it was the hottest salsa I ever tasted so I went to ask them for a milder one hoping I could get some flavor in the totally bland food but they only had a spicier one. They don't have a beer license so you can't have beer with you Mexican food which is sort of important. I would never go here again and I can't understand how they even stay in business. Their french fries however were good though they are very chintzy with the ketchup. They have also done the magical feet of creating chips that you wouldn't want to eat.

objectively the worst burrito in town. i do not give that designation lightly. i’ve been meaning to try this spot for a while, hearing great reviews and word of mouth. not to mention their “best burritos in town” claim. ordered a pollo asado super burrito to go. as i unwrapped the foil i noticed that the tortilla was a beautiful golden yellow, a good sign. little did i know that the tortilla was the best part of this whole thing as i took bite after bite, searching for any of the promised bbq chicken filling, i found nothing, save a countable amount of fingernail-sized orange flecks that i assumed were chicken. the fillings were mushy rice ( oh my god was this rice overcooked), lukewarm refried beans, some unmelted cheese shreds, cabbage and crema. i guess there was supposed to be guac in there, but it was pretty much just burrito goo throughout. after getting through 1/3rd of the thing, i tried to figure out what the hell was going on here, the meat had to be soooommeeeewhere. they wouldnt do me dirty like that, would they? put it in a container, split it open, and found a cluster of maybe a half ounce of “chicken” inside. go ahead and play where’s waldo with the photos i attached. tell me if you can find the chicken maybe this was a fluke, but, like, this was easily the worst burrito ive had in YEARS.

Tried every taqueria in town. Not gonna find a better one. Been coming for years, never had one issue with any dish I've been served. Superb service and amazing food! Update 2025: place has gone way down hill. Take your money elsewhere. They don’t make their own chips anymore and the store bought chips they serve you are stale and rock hard. This used to be my favorite spot in town, now they should take down the “best burritos in town” sign out front. Such a shame, but the cost and corner cutting is out of hand. The flavor it once had is gone. Go somewhere else.

Bought a taco for $6 and later noticed a taco plate with rice and beans for $10. Asked the lady if I could pay $4 more for rice and beans. She refused and stated that I already purchased a taco so an additional rice and beans would cost $6. This was after I purchased $35 worth of tacos and merely purchased one more taco because the salsa was too spicy for my mom. I know I’m being petty for $2 but the customer service was awful. The taco place across the street has better food and very friendly service.

They charge you $1 to use a credit card, which is an unfair markup. That’s not the actual cost of processing a card swipe. They only accept cash, which is fine, but there are plenty of businesses that accept cards nearby.

This is not a review about the food. Strictly the lady and man who probably run the place. My friends and I had bought some food across the street and just wanted a place to sit and eat and this taqueria had some tables outside with not one person sitting out there so we went to go sit down and this man came out before we even sat down, very very rudely told us to leave. I asked him politely if I can buy something there and he immediately said no and again told us to leave shooing us with his hands. The lady had to tell him to calm down. Regardless if we bought food at another place as an owner of a business you should conduct your self with at least a little respect. I would definitely go to the place across the street. Nice people and great burritos and tacos!!
