A sick drive bar with a huge patio that has one of the best, if not THE best food truck in town attached to it. I'm talking East Side Kings. Grab yourself a few Austin Beerworks and pork buns. You can't go wrong.
You'll need to come here a few times. The biggest trick, is no explore the menu.... Everything is so good, it's easy to get stuck on a favorite !! I'd list my favorites, but it's the whole menu. A definite winner in my book of eats in Austin.
I love the divey vibes of The Liberty. It's nice to find a place on East 6th where I don't feel like I have to impress anyone. Plus the beer is decently cheap and the bartenders are super cool.
This review is for the Grackle ESK truck. I had the pork belly sandwich. OMG. The pork and the fat was so delicious. Great service and friendly order taker. Didn't have to wait too long either. Went on a thursday night.
Had a great time on the come and shave it 13 pub crawl the liberty was the head water and had the best Brew I'd had all night also great tacos. Looked going back and bringing my friends.
Met my husband here in 2010 and always get the best food truck bites. It's best dive bar in Austin, hands down.
Great East Austin bar. Rotating beers on tap. Nice backyard sitting area with classic East Austin food truck called Eastside King serving up a Texas take on Thai street food.
Best food truck ever!!!!! Here's a little help for the ones that didn't know this, they serve Brussels sprouts upon request for like 2$ extra, I wish they were pulled up in my backyard.
A great hole in the wall with a nice, wide patio in the back with lots of room to mingle. Of course having one of the better East Side Kings trailers in the back doesn't hurt. They tend to do a lot of events, especially around ACL/SXSW, so pay attention. Free food and beer abound.
I had never had a peanut butter-curry sandwich with jalapeno slices, basil, mint, cilantro, lavender, and onions between two deep-fried pancake-style buns before, but it was much better than what I would have expected. The "home style" beet fries with kewpie mayo were great too, and beets are hard to work with. I can't wait to try the ramen dishes at the other locations.
Some of the best food I have had ever! I have eaten at Michelin starred restaurants, but I enjoyed the food by East Side Kings as much...if not more! if you're in the area, you have to check it out. If you're not in the area, drive there and get some food! We had: Pork Buns, Thai Chicken Kara'age, Brussel Salad, Roasted Beets with a Kewpi Mayo & an Austin Fire Eagle Ale. It was all a-mazing!
Happy hour specials may be the best on the eat side/best in downtown Austin area. Back patio vibe is super chill and the East Side King trailer is there for yummy snacks.
Don't die my friend, love this bar, feels sad to be in the middle of all this gentrification, but glad to be somewhere that's been around for more than 5 years. East side king is God. Same thing Eli who works behind the bar. Best bartender in Austin, an absolute unit.
This has always been my favorite bar on the eastside, and somehow it always has the right crowd inside. Great food, great drinks, and again, never too infested with tourists. Sometimes takes a bit to get a drink, but what can you do...
after hearing about East Side Kings forever, I finally had the chance to try it behind Libery bar. my ranking of what we ordered: 1)beet fries (crunchy outside, soft and warm inside), 2) chicken bun 3) thai fried chicken 4) brussel sprouts. all the food had balanced, strong flavors with a nice mix of crunchy and soft textures. I look forward to trying the other trailers as well!
Favorite bar In Austin. Doesn't hurt that they have Golden Grill serving up some delicious wings & fries in the back.
Food is 100% on point every time. Nothing ever leaves me unsatisfied or disappointed. Only bummer is when they run out of something I want. As well with 3 different trailers on E.6th, each having a different menu, there's plenty of options to try something new. Perfect place for a low key date or mid night munchies.
If you looked up dive bar in the dictionary, Liberty would probably show up first or 2nd. I liked it a lot, cheap drinks, pool table, old arcade games and an outdoor area where they have a food truck. Looking for a cheap beer and a low key spot, I recommend going here.
Favorite dive bar. Friendly staff. East side king is gone, new food truck is ok.
I freaking love the Liberty! It's such a great mix of people and has an awesome selection of $6 combos. I tend to hit this place up every time I'm on East 6th for a Lone Star and either a shot of Fireball or a shot of Jim Beam.
There's something pretty magical about a place that has survived such a dramatic change of scenery and surrounding guests. Since it was there first, this bar of dive lovin', metal crushin', inked up, patrons are I guess the normal crowd. Then the talks of city building swallowed it. Woosh. Standing tall and exquisite came 2 upscale condos to the right and left. I expected the scene to change and it didn't. Not one bit. In fact there seemed to be much more rowdiness and it made me smile knowing that some businesses and people make it work despite the opposites in views and tastes. Or maybe they all favor strong cheap drinks!
Best dive bar in Austin! Frozen Sailor Jerry's kill on a summer afternoon/evening. Friendly staff, just don't act a fool. With the original ESK truck parked back, it's a must for locals. Love the new sign! Let's just hope it doesn't get gentrified...
Old venue, hip crowd. Straight-forward drink menu with occasional specials. Pool table. The real highlight is that great food from the East Side King that you can enjoy in their back patio, and the delicious eats are made even better with a cold pint. A little dirty, but yes, it's better that way.
A fun, chill bar to come with friends. They have games in house & a good beer selection and house drink specialities at a good price. If you like whiskey, I recommend the Heartless Bastard ;) (Whiskey/ginger/lemonade). I prefer the long patio tables outside to the inside, only because it's a bit too dark for me in there. And definitely check out the East Side Kings food truck out back if you're hungry! I've had the Poor Qui's Buns & the Brussels Sprouts Salad, both good.
This place is awesome - tucked away in the back of Liberty bar's beer garden is the most awesome mix of Asian cuisine and Texan barbecue culture. Do yourself a favour and order the beet fries and pork belly buns. Only negative is the dude serving me was a Tottenham fan but I won't hold that against them!
This is a great place to take your date, your dog and your best friend. There's cheap drinks & a great yard area for you and your dog to make even more friends over delicious beet fries. I haven't found anything not to like yet, and I don't expect to.
This bar is great! You need to check out the food truck in the back, cannot recommend the pork belly enough. Surprisingly, the highlight for me was the hot drinks from the bar, perfect when the weather is cold and rainy.
Cool bar! Lots of awesome art on the wall. Didn't get his name, but the tattooed guy behind the bar couldn't have been cooler. Very nice guy. Great conversation. We will return!
A pretty laid-back bar that has an impressive collection of beer on tap. It usually has some live music to accompany your drinks, and the staff are all friendly as well as helpful. The area is far removed from the noise and bustle of "Dirty" 6th, so this is definitely a quieter experience. For beer aficionados, be sure to keep visiting since they do rotate all the local breweries seasonal beers.
A dive bar as it should be done. Awesome drinks, awesome service. The manager Zach looked after a couple of deadbeat Aussies like us and we are eternally grateful. Make this your first stop - actually make it your last stop - when you're in Austin.
Visited from Las Vegas and came here on a local’s recommendation during happy hour. Relaxed vibe, great prices and the frozen rum drink was awesome. Sat out back hanging out for quite awhile and also met some cool locals indoors. Marked it as a favorite place in Austin.
Good place for a fairly cheap and casual drink with friends, to hang out back and get some food from the trailer, just don't expect to watch sports... It's a neighborhood bar. The parking is not ideal but you really shouldn't have to drive to your local bar anyway.
I've been coming here since it opened. Wow the neighborhood has changed. Good beer selection at a good price. One pinball machine. Great back seating area. east side king trailer back there! Everytime I'm in town with friends i go here... On weekends it gets very busy.
Good place to chill and drink. The food truck in the back helps a lot. It's a shame that the place is being boxed in by the building of condos, but I'm still glad this place is around. Beer selection is excellent, and the prices for happy hour are unbeatable.
You have an employee saying Tony was there and Tony was clearly not there……1 star…. **Update** I watched further into the episode turns out Tony was there…….. 5 stars…….
Another favorite of mine in the hip east 6th St in Austin, TX. Great, Amazing food truck that is in the outside square with delicious and healthy bar food you can find. The staff is amazing but don't let their coolness a sign of weakness! They put up with no shananig. A must if in Austin.
A must visit. Fast paced interesting spot to have drinks.
After coming here with people a couple of times and then for events a couple of times, I have to say this is my favorite bar in Austin. It's ALWAYS such a good atmosphere - I love to come here to escape "dirty 6th" and be around interesting, calm people. It's a great place to meet people or just have an interesting conversation. Also, there is an East Side King food truck in the back. The Liberty is wonderful. (It's been great for SXSW as well!)
My favorite dive bar on East 6th. Excellent service, great drink prices, plenty of TVs, and a bomb food truck out back. Can’t go wrong at Liberty.
Nice dive bar with cheap beers and great atmosphere! They have a pool table and a big TV section during games. The food truck out back is really good and a great compliment to the whole set up. Liberty stays open late and it’s rare to ever find a long line you have to wait. It looks small from the outside but it’s spacious enough, so if you are on the road or for a quick drink, this place doesn’t disappoint!
If you are looking for a really chill dive bar environment, this is the place. Not only is the inside superdiving, they have an amazing patio backyard area where you can gather a lot of friends and hang out. I freaking love this bar and it's my favorite bar here in Austin because it's chill, the staff are always super nice, plus there's a cat that lives near the bar and she comes and visits sometimes. So cute! Definitely come here and check it out
Very friendly dive bar. Rock theme and play good music. Outside patio too. Good place to hang with your friends. Tip your bartenders 👉😎👉
Celebrated a friend's 21st birthday with drinks at a table in the back. The music was great and the ambience was very relaxed. I will definitely come back again with some friends and just have another great night. Also, the east side king's food is delicious. The beats fries and the chicken sandwich were light yet sufficient.
Great bar staff. Good beer selection. However it is the Eastside king beer garden that makes this place Austin weird and awesome. Took my mom here direct from the airport. She was a bit scared of the bar. Wouldn't get close. Kept giving me the look. All was well the moment she stepped into the beer garden. Then she fell in love with the bean buns and beet fries. Good bike parking too
Awesome chill neighborhood spot on a main strip. Great hang with a large patio
Typical Austin parking issues. No free parking. But you should take he gamble if your just going in for one drink and leaving right after your drink.
I haven’t been back here in years, yet, I felt so welcome and back at home. Mitch, and Quinn are all-stars, and I can’t say enough about how warm their welcome was. But it’s what I have always expected from The Liberty ever since it opened. I make it a point to revisit the art and KC’s grandfathers leather jacket from WWII. It’s been a long time, but because of Mitch & Quinn, despite my never meeting them before today, I felt back home. I cannot thank you enough. But it won’t stop me from trying. :) ♥️
July 2025: The liberty is a wonderful little East Austin gem. With a relatively small indoor space, and a really awesome back patio, you can get a dive style environment without the dirty dive Vibe. Drink prices are on par for Austin, they do have some deals, but mostly regular pricing. Happy hour looks like it's pretty decent. They also have a food truck out back, I really liked Eastside King that used to be there, but I'm not sure what's there now.
If you’re in search of a place that feels more like a second living room or back yard than a bar, The Liberty is your spot. Nestled on a side street with a flickering sign, The Liberty doesn’t try to dress itself up—and thank god for that. This is a dive bar in the purest sense: gritty, honest, and full of stories. The moment you walk in, you’re greeted by dim lighting, illuminated bar, and a crew of regulars that seem like they’ve been holding down the same barstools for years. Walk through the pool tables towards the back door and find plenty of outdoor seating. The bathrooms are what you’d expect from a dive bar Drinks are ridiculously affordable. Whether you’re ordering a domestic, a whiskey neat, or the mysterious “house special” shot, you’ll leave buzzed without breaking the bank. The bartenders are sharp, salty, and surprisingly attentive. They don’t do frills, but they pour heavy and laugh loud.
The bar and staff were good, but the FOOD TRUCK! My god the Pepper Beef Pie was the best thing I've eaten on my visit to Austin so far. Highly recommend!
Best food in Austin!!!! Locals watched our beloved Paul win Top Chef, and supported him even when angry feminists tried to cancel him...but his food was just too good! (They still came back to eat it lol.) Go behind the Liberty Bar. Park between the alley on 7th. Always a spot there if you look. Try everything on his menu. You can't go wrong. ❤️
Went for dinner around 11 pm on a Tuesday. The food truck is open until 1 am. I did have to go through the bar to get to the food truck (Eastside King). I ordered the Chicken Sandwhich which was very good and flavorful. Also got the Pork Belly Meshi which was also a solid choice. Recommend going here if you aren't trying to break the bank and looking for something tasty and filling.
Wow 😲 I’ve been to this place a number of times and just now discovered the outdoor back patio! They have a great beer 🍺 and shot 🍸 special for 6 bucks! I should note that there is a bartender with a beard and toothpick that just isn’t a nice person. I still give it 5 for many other reasons ... but what a bad person to have work at a great place!
Complete dive bar. Good for us though as East Side Kings was able to afford rent and form a great partnership. Since then the bar has really exploded in popularity. These days it gets some of East Austin's finest, which means you never know what you're going to see. I was there last night and saw a guy with a double mohawk, each dyed a different color. Make sure you talk to some of the locals as they'll tell you stories of yesteryear about how ATX was against expansion for years and how Californians ruined the city. A can of Lone Star makes a great conversation starter and is the most common drink at the bar.
I loved that they accepted everyone. I've never felt racism till the Grackle. This place made you feel welcomed. Awesome environment!🤎
Cheap drinks and a good outdoor space with onsite food truck. Nothing spectacular, but a fun place to spend a night with a group of friends. It gets packed so go early to snag a table out back
I really enjoyed this place. They have nice back area to sit and eat East Side King, which is amazing! Service was pretty good. I would go back. I went during the day so it was not too busy but I'd like to see how the night life would be like.
Brussel sprouts, when prepared properly, are like nature's candy. This place does them right! I'm not vegetarian but will pick the brussels over the chicken any day. (Though the chicken is tasty too...don't get me wrong!). They are conveniently located behind liberty bar too and have tons of outdoor seating.
Good dive bar with a good selection of beers on tap. Walk out the back and a big back yard with a big amount of picnic seating and a food truck that servers great food to help feed your hunger as you drink and hang out with friends
Food is cheap and unreal. Brussel sprouts and beets are not to be missed. My favorite of all the ESK locations - best menu and cutest staff! Get there early, there's always a line. Worth waiting for!
Layout/atmosphere *Two TVs; pool table; jukebox; projector screen; arcade games; Marlboro cigarettes sold here Food/drink *Complimentary water cooler *No food menu (Golden Grill on site)
A no frills place with a cool back patio. Their happy hour deals are great like the $1.50 PBR. They have a huge selection of beers and I like their Berry lemonade booze icee machine. The icee has a nice kick to it.
I have introduced East Side King to at least five people and they've all been converted to worshipers of this delectable treasure. If you can get me to like beets, you're an amazing amazing chef. The first thing on their menu is the best. Thai Chicken Karaage. I had to go to their two other locations on E. 6th and try stuff and I really want to get to Hole in the Wall.
Cool staff. Music is jukebox but typically decent. Crowd used to be more punk, now a lot of “weekend warriors”. But still a great quasi dive bar to go to on E6
Drink & Click™ ATX Photowalked here in July and had a great time. Drink prices were good, and the look of the place is fantastically moody with cool art on the walls. We had a great time playing pool inside, and out back we enjoyed amazing chicken sandwiches from the food truck.
My favorite go to bar on 6th street. Staff is always great, drinks are always affordable, patio is always fun. Fire pit when it's chilli out, east side kings food truck doesn't hurt either....
I love this place. One of the early, most popular East Side King locations, and one of the best! Out the back of the also popular Liberty Bar, the wait can be long if you order during dinner rush but grab a cheap drink and hang out and you should have no problems. If I recall correctly this location started the now-classics like chicken kara-age, brussel sprouts, and beet fries - the former two seasoned with that delicious blend of fresh herbs and sweet and savoury and everything delicious. I'll sometimes stray towards the peanut or pork buns but it's hard to pull me away from the chicken and brussel sprouts! Four stars only because I feel like the chicken kara-age used to be larger portioned and more carefully seasoned, but I've only been there in rush times recently so it could just be a function of how busy they are now. The last time I went to the Hole in the Wall location the chicken kara-age was just like I remember from Liberty... that being said I'm still here multiple times a week because it's still superb, and Liberty is an awesome bar.
I tried East Side King while at the Draughthouse. I had the fried Brussels sprouts salad (awesome!), poor qui buns (okay) and special sweet potatoes (awesome!). I've also been to the location at Liberty Bar and had the fried chicken dish. It was good but I think the Brussels sprouts and sweet potatoes are much tastier. Can be a little pricey but very unique.
One of my favorite Austin dive bars with some of the best bar food courtesy of the east side Kings trailer. Soon it'll be surrounded by condos, but such is the state of east 6th. Come here before it's gentrified out of existence.
Went here last night with some friends for happy hour. Loved the back yard outside area, but it stated raining so it pushed us all inside. Not the most spacious place, but good happy hour prices, and friendly bar staff.
Had Brussels sprouts salad (awesome!), poor qui buns (okay) and special sweet potatoes (awesome!), Then had some of their fried chicken the next time we went and it was delicious. Food is a little more unique and mostly good, would go again.
Great drink selection and prices, check. Free water if that's your thing, check. East Side Kings food trailer with fried beets (nature's candy, you know), check. Great place to meet people or hipster watch, check. Parking... iffy. Note: interior lighting is for the cozy -- if you have something you want to read, this is probably not the best place.
Nice spot to stop in for a happy hour. The atmosphere is laid back and a little grungy. They have a nice patio outback that patrons can enjoy. Overall, this is a solid spot to stop at for a casual beer.
I was so impressed by the Liberty that I can't wait to go back. The inside is spacious and there is a great outside deck to hang out and chill. As an added bonus, the place was welcoming to an old hippie like me, although the clientele is most definitely hipster. Everything was great!
Cheap drinks and an East Side King truck in the back. Definitely try the pork belly sweet buns and the fried beats. They are ridic! Great place to hang out outside and meet folks, good move with the cafeteria style picnic tables in the back
Great drink specials. Regular $6 beer and shot. And good happy hour specials from open til 8pm. Cute outdoor seating area and the food truck out back is yummy. I do have to say though, when I walked in it smelled AWFUL, however I noticed later in the night they had lit incense that did a good job of masking the smell.
This was my first visit to any ESK location, and I believe that the menu is slightly different at all the locations so maybe this is the "least best" location of them all. Don't know for sure, but just judging on what I ate, I wasn't very impressed. I ordered the beet fries and the Pork Qui buns, and it's funny how two small plates can cost so much. The buns weren't bad, but they weren't anything I'll think about ever eating again. And the beet fries were pretty good, but again, not something that I need to have in my life again. Like many food trucks in Austin (at least that's the origin of ESK), the food is overpriced. Apparently many people don't mind paying this much for this food, but I thought it was very "meh" for the $15-$17 the two items cost. That said, I guess everyone should give this place a shot, but maybe lower your expectations.
Put those buns in your mouth! Put them buns in your mouth! I wanna smack that!! Um. I mean. Enjoy the delicious and tasty [pork, veggie, other] buns here. They also have a decent brussels sprout dish. And beets!! Don't forget those. Hell why aren't you just taking three friends and ordering the whole menu? Because you probably should.
Anthony Bourdain is nuts. I mean, their food is solid. But it's not worth the wait (I suppose when you're AB, you don't wait). Anyway, if you're planning on being around the bar for a good long while and don't mind taking out a second mortgage, then I'd recommend this place. Oh, and it's significantly better than its sister locations at The Grackle and at Hole in the Wall.
If hipster is your thing, The Liberty is your bar. The staff has the attitude and the bar has the smell. The outdoor patio is a great place to meet up with friends and have a cheap drink, not to mention enjoying the AMAZING food cart, East Side Kings!
Food from east side king is great, although I miss the PB buns, I realize this is a dive bar(been coming for years) but they need to up their game a bit on the drinks.. they don t have to be fancy just good.. come on guys nowadays you have too much competitions to keep making the shitest margarita IV ever tasted...-.-
Pretty typical dive bar but with a very spacious outdoor area that was pretty nice. The seating inside wasn't bad either. Considering how hard street parking is, I was happy that there was a garage across the street. Would go here again.
Be careful if you get or try to get drunk there. The karaoke machine doesn’t work and the bar tender asked me very loud and meanly to leave the bar when I asked her for my only $ 5 dollars back for my none request song back. Terrible experience. No a place to have nicely drink.
Have only been in Austin for 6 months, but this was hands down the worst bar that I've visited. Rude servers which refused to close out tabs, dirty glasses (dont even think about asking the bartenders to switch glasses for you), homeless people in the venue asking for drinks. Avoid if possible and walk down a few blocks to Whistlers instead.
