Our server Michael was PHENOMENAL!!! I used to work in this industry & we all know servers make their money via tips and to make those tips it is all about personality, sense of humor, kindness and promt service to name a few .Michael NAILED every bit of this!! Even though you can't see his face behind his mask he had the most amazing smiling anytime he came to our table..thank you Michael for and awesome experience here at Tejas!!
I don’t usually leave reviews but after my incredible experience today I thought it was necessary. We went on a walk planning to pick up fresh sandwiches down the street but saw a few people on the patio at Z’Tejas and decide to reroute in for a margarita (or 6). Michael could not have been more welcoming and made us feel so safe to enjoy our first meal back in public during these, for lack of a better word, weird and confusing times. The food was fresh, drinks were cold and flowing, and the staff could not have been more gracious and accommodating. Highly recommend for anyone looking to relax with family and friends! Thank you Z’Tejas and cheers to staying safe and sane!
We hosted a large group here in their private space. Lauren was responsive and very helpful prior to the event. The day of the event, the host staff was incredibly attentive to make sure the buffet stayed filled and fresh. The bartender was great, kept the drinks coming and was super helpful. The venue itself was perfect sized to have some people sitting, some people standing and being able to mingle plus make our group announcements. The whole group was extremely complimentary of everything! Thank you all!
Great experience here. We had a large party and we had a private room with a bartender and servers for a buffet style dinner. The team did a fabulous job, were friendly and handled our large group with grace. The food was great - started with salsa and Queso bar and then we had an assortment of Tex mex, enchiladas, and build your own tacos. Loved it!
Z Tejas was a cool spot to have dinner before our concert! We were seated and then after about 10 minutes the owner, Randy comes over to our table and spends 5-10 minutes talking to us and getting to know us all which was really cool and truthfully humble from a typical business owner. The food was great and the drinks we're even better! I got the Baseball Cut Sirloin which came wrapped in bacon with asparagus and mashed potatoes and I added the shrimp! All of my meal was amazing, the steak was great! Perfectly cooked and had lots of flavor especially when you throw a little of everything into one bite! On top of how good our meals were, we got queso and cornbread and those highly exceeded expectations! The next time your around 6th for an event or just looking for a spot to grab dinner, give Z Tejas a try!
We had a great dining experience here. Service was very attentive. Food was great. We ordered the trio sampler. Queso, guacamole and salsa. The salsa was some of the best salsa I have ever had at a restaurant. We shared the jerk chicken salad. It was good but in my opinion was a fish out of water on a Tex Mex menu. We had the street tacos and the stuffed Chile Relleno. The Chile Relleno stole the show. No wonder it has been on their menu for 30 years. Great food, service and atmosphere for a fast casual restaurant. Keep up the great work ZTejas!!
Wow! This place has an amazing and very friendly staff! We have visited several restaurants in the Austin area and this staff was definitely the most friendly and accommodating. The building is lit up with colorful lights. We ate dinner here on a Friday night. We sat on the front patio which was awesome. I had a spicy marg and nachos. Amazing Margarita! Amazing Nachos! My daughter had mac & cheese which I tasted and it was Amazing also. Eat here and sit on the patio! Highly recommend and will be back!!
Michael is the best waiter here at Z’Tejas. I’ve enjoyed my stay in Austin trying almost everything on the Menu. Happy hour appetizers from 3- 6 everyday. Loved it all. Catfish beignets, Yuca fries, mushroom shrimp enchiladas, spinach pecan encrusted chicken with Gorgonzola, beer battered fish tacos. Cebollas locas. Loved it all, wish I had more time here.
I just flew in for a hair show this afternoon and I’m only here until tomorrow so I googled the best places to eat in Austin and this location came up with very good reviews… I came here and ordered several different dishes and it was very very pleased with everything. The service from the time I entered the door to the time I left it was amazing… The food, I ordered a tamale, the nachos, the yucca fries Not to mention a couple margaritas lol but everything about this place was top notch… I would definitely recommend!
Probably the best Tex-Mex I’ve ever had! Absolutely delicious!! The presentation was great, quality of food was suburb and staff was prompt. Chips and salsa is on request, but it’s probably best that way so you don’t get full before the actual meal. If you’re in Austin, check this place out! You won’t be sorry. The mushroom enchiladas are fantastic!
Dinner here was great as always! Michael, our server, remembered us from the last time we were there. He was excellent as always and gave us amazing drink & meal recommendations! The Ahi Tuna salad was delicious and the raspberry coconut margarita was my favorite alcoholic beverage I've ever had there. Definitely worth it! Very sad to know this location will be closing next year, but just enough time to make it back another time or two. :)
I loved the place! We were visiting from Houston during COVID and they had good precautions. The food was amazing but what made the visit a lot more enjoyable was BLUE! Yes that is the name of our waitress! She was extremely friendly, helpful and basically everything she recommended I got and I loved it! Even if the food was not that good her attitude would have made it enjoyable. I got the chicken fried chicken and didn’t even finish it because it was too much (good problem). The mashed potato was like heaven in my mouth and veggies were good (not a big veggie fan). The mango margarita was sweet and would definitely get it again when I visit again. Favorite part was the corn bread! Soft and not too sweet, just right. We sat outside and it was perfect for pictures (which Blue offered to take without us even asking ❤️). Extremely recommend this place.
We came for a private event- surprise party. Michael did such an awesome job. An incredible time amazing food, drink and great vibes all around. Book your events here you won’t be disappointed.
Enjoyed a lakeside meal with a host who was kind enough to order us several different selections of their menu! After a fun day on the lake we came in to yummy delicious food! Also, ordered gallon size margaritas! Nothing could have been better!
This restaurant has always held a huge place in my heart. The food is absolutely delectable every time. Devoted fan for life! Michael served us all the foods as well as a fabulously fun attitude. 10/10 recommend
Today was my first experience at this Z Tejas location and also my best experience so far. I’ve always been a big fan so I knew the food (and margaritas) wouldn’t disappoint, but the service we received was absolutely incredible! Michael was knowledgeable of the menu, gave awesome suggestions, and went above and beyond to make our time there pleasant. He was amazing! We also had a nice table visit from the General Manager, Brian. I will definitely be going back the next time I’m in Austin!
Food is amazing. We had brunch. Everything was perfect and our server Michael Petty did a phenomenal job. I’m super impatient and easily frustrated with any issues with food and can confidently say we wouldn’t have changed anything about this visit. I’d definitely check it out if you are in the area.
Fantastic service, food, and drinks. Best part is there's never a line, in a city full of places that require reservations! Shout out to our awesome server Michael for making dinner a fun experience and not just a meal.
Great after a long day of work, great for a date day/night on the weekend. The House Margarita is superb, the restaurant is nestled perfectly in the heart of the city. Michael, our waiter, is here for the people! Incredible service 10/10 with bonus points. Expect great service and great food!
I wish there was a way to give 10 stars!!! Joseph and Brian are awesome. From the front row parking, to the temp taking at the entry, to our seating, we felt so safe. Joseph is an outstanding server and such a positive personality, he makes it easy to feel comfortable and so well taken care of. My bride and I had the salmon dish and the filet. I must say the salmon was to die for but, the filet was the absolute best steak I’ve ever tasted, every single bite was totally delicious. We plan on making this our new date night bite.
Had dinner here the other night, food and atmosphere were great but the service was outstanding. Our servers name was Michael and he was friendly, knowledgeable, great with kids and had lots of spot on suggestions for the table. Will visit again
Michael was the BEST! So attentive and made sure we were well taken care of the entire meal. Couldn’t have asked for better service, drinks, and tacos. Will definitely be coming back, hopefully when he is working.
I ordered the stacked chicken. It was excellent; one of the best restaurant meals I've had in a long time. It was unique, a truly new combination of flavors and textures. You don't get to experience that much. My husband got the fajitas, which were good. We asked for more tortillas (restaurants never seem to give enough tortillas for the amount of fajita served) and they brought out a couple more.
Michael is the most amazing server I have ever come across. His recommendations on food were stellar. I super loved the mushroom enchiladas he suggested to get the jerk chicken and spinach on. What a very fun, and enthusiastic server. I have worked in the service industry for years and I don't know that I have even encountered such an awesome single serving friend, including looking at myself in the mirror.
We were visiting from Oklahoma. We had a great meal here but it was made even better by our waiter, Michael. We had had a very bad day and he brightened our moods and was very attentive and personable. He took care of all we needed while giving us ample time to visit together and enjoy a leisurely meal. Thank you Michael for a great dinner experience!
Loved this place. Jared John and Michael were great. They made our late afternoon lunch a unique and memorable dining experience. Love these people. Gotta try the raspberry Coconut Margaretta. Love the wonderful friendly ambiance. Definitely recommend. I will come back again.
First time here and great first impression. Will totally be back! Had Michael as a server and he was an INCREDIBLE server!!! Recommended all of our parties meals and each meal was delicious! And our meals arrived so quickly! Highly highly recommend! Social distancing practices were great. Really appreciate the safety and how much they care about their customers! Come here!!!
Michael was a spectacular waiter! He brought happiness to the group and was very helpful with suggestions. He is also the best salesman i’ve ever met and convinced our whole table tequila shots was the perfect dessert (which it was). Will come back solely for Michael!
Food was unique and delicious. Not what I was expecting menu wise but I was very happy with the food we ordered. I have never had catfish taste so good in the blackened catfish tacos. The house margarita was great as well. Parking was a little tough to find cause there was only about 12 spots street side, but then we realized they had plenty more on the side and in the back under the 2nd story walkway. I would go back here.
Wow. What a nice visit. My friend and I visited for a dinner break, and I’m so glad we did. Our server, Michael, was such a king. Great service - friendly, funny, made some very nice drinks for us. Handsome too. (Good for him.) We will be returning.
This place has great energy and great service! Go here and get some queso and chip. Enjoy an organic margarita! Delicious! Our server was Michael and he did a great job! He hyped us up the entire meal and made it an awesome time!
I’m in town with my boyfriend for vacation and I will say him and I both were extremely satisfied with our visit here. Not only was the food and atmosphere amazing, our sever Michael, was extremely kind and welcoming. He was extremely attentive without being bothersome, which being a bartender myself I know is not an easy line to toe. He made our experience extremely memorable and I look forward to coming in the future! Cheers!
Wow! We came for brunch with a group of 20 people and had a great experience. Almost always with a group this large I have a terrible experience but our server Michael had such a great system and spirit that our entire group loved our time together. We were well taken care of and as importantly the food and drinks were delicious.
Having been the first time I've been here, I was pleased with such a hospitable staff. Extremely courteous and very prompt. Our waiter, Gregory, was extremely friendly for someone in the customer service industry and his demeanor was a breath of fresh air. I wish more associates could share his disposition. Our water was brought cold and without ice! Just the way we like it and didn't even have to ask for it. The frozen margaritas were delightful. So much so, we each got another one. The trio appetizer was delicious and I could probably live off of the guacamole alone. As with every Mexican restaurant I visit for the first time, I ordered green enchiladas (chicken and tomatillo sauce). More or less off menu, Gregory was able to make it happen and they were great! An awesome experience and I do plan on visiting again.
If I could give a 10 star rating I would def. My daughter is very ill and her only request was to have a family dinner. Sabrina Q. she really made this happen for my baby girl, she dealt with all the ups and downs from us and she still kept her cool and made it happen. Micheal was our server and he did such an outstanding job making sure that everyone there was happen from personality to getting everything we needed. If I was to do another dinner here I would def was him as our server. Awesome job Michael Petty. Jarrett Austin was out bartender and he also went above and beyond to make sure all the guys were happy and ladies. My daughter was very pleased and she talked about it all night. We took plenty of pictures and made sure to give a good tip. Thanks to you all here at Z'Tejas west 6th for the great night. Yes by the way food was hot and awesome no complaints there. Thanks again for everything my daughter said thank you as well..... Sorry if I repeated some thing but just very much so overwhelmed with satisfaction....
Came in super hungry and in a bad mood. Michael walked over like a breath of fresh air and changed the whole mood! He was great! Recommended great dishes, shared new drinks with us, and he made us feel at home and relaxed. I'll definitely be back! Oh! And the food was great too!
We were visiting Austin with family for a few days and walked into Z'Tejas just for some drinks and appetizers. There were 8 of us. Our waitress was Blue and she was great! We had the guacamole which was delicious. We all ordered margaritas which were very well made. My husband and I went back on our way to the airport for Sunday Brunch and had Michael Petty as our server. He was above and beyond with his level of service. Our food was delicious as well. My husband had the fish tacos and they were very tasty - the shrimp was fresh and cooked just right. I had the blackened chicken salad that was also fresh and tasty. We enjoyed the cornbread - very homemade and served warm with butter. We both had margaritas which were fresh and delicious. If we lived in Austin we would frequent Z'Tejas.
Coming from a woman with over 10 years in the service industry, Michael is a treasure!!! Personable, polite, and friendly. Offered great locals advice, things to do, and even some secret menu options! Mushroom enchiladas are fabulous and the raspberry coconut margaritas were the BEST!!!
Michael was an amazing server who did everything possible to accommodate our group of 10 people. The food, drinks and service were excellent. I came to this restaurant as a student nearly 30 years ago and I still love it!
Wonderful food, started strong with good drinks and the best cornbread i’ve ever had. We were served by Michael who did a great job entertaining and offering suggestions. spinach pasta might be my new favorite. A must in Austin
We popped into this place on a sunny Saturday for a happy hour margarita. We had Michael as a server. He was fast, friendly and had wonderful recommendations. Will always ask for him when we go back. First time to try Z, and definitely not the last- but I blame Michael for this new addiction we may have.
Michael was the BEST waiter ever!!! He was absolutely amazingly hospitable... ever possible thing we could want we got! And he went above & beyond to make our stay wonderful & taken care of! We look forward to seeing him soon!!
We came in with a party of 14 and we’re seated and served in a beautiful and organized manner. Our waiter Michael took amazing care of us and asked us for our every need! So friendly and remembered every one of our orders! The food was delicious and they do have vegan options!
Had a great time here with my team. Food was really good (quesadillas) and server- Michael - was truly here for the people! Really hope him and his wife can get to Disney World!! Highly recommend for the food, service, and overall experience!
Visited for the first time and at first was not happy about no one receiving us nor acknowledging that we were waiting to be seated. I walked over and spoke to a man called Leland who was the bartender and he invited us to sit at the bar so he could take care of us. He was very engaging, funny and attentive - made excellent cocktails (Mexican martini was amazing). We had the shrimp tostadas and nachos app - be warned the nachos app is a lot of food. The food was great and we really enjoyed interacting with Leland - we will definitely return soon!
Came here on a nice Thursday evening! Saw amazing reviews and wanted to try something new! This place was definitely a surprise! Super good food! All the staff is super friendly, Michael served us and he was super helpful and accommodating! Made our experience super awesome! Definitely recommend!
Michael our server was so good we returned the next day! He created the best dining experience ever. The food is delicious, but it’s the service that makes the difference. Michael’s “secret” menu recommendations make Ztejas a must place to dine in Austin. If you go, be sure to ask for Michael.
Me gusto
I use to feel Ztejas deserved 5 stars but since new management has taken over things have gone down hill a little. Food is great, great selection, great flavor, perfect portion sizes. Unfortunately they no longer provide their famous cornbread complimentary, no daily specials, mixed drinks aren't as consistent, not as cleanly (silverware still had food on it)
The food is pretty good, almost gourmet, but when it comes to Mexican, don't expect an authentic experience. If you're heading over, you'd be mostly going for the drinking experience, as this place is famous for its margaritas and has decent variety of spirits. Happy hour begins Tuesdays and Fridays after 2 P.M. for you girls interested.
What is a catfish beignets? Unfortunately I did not find out what’s catfish beignets are but brunch at Z’tejas is tasty, filling and pretty great on the weekend. The menu has the traditional tex-mex classics but also some slightly different dishes: babacoa omelet as one is the perfect meat and egg combo. Although the potatoes can use a little crisp up- or not be covered and soggy-fied by omelet. Fijita egg is so good. with all the extra, it probably should have been a plate for 2. Happy eating
Cool little spot for happy hour and dinner. They have parking, but it’s limited, and can be difficult during peak hours. Great spot for happy hour on Tuesdays. Half off margs and tacos a la carte on Tuesdays. They also have other happy hour deals. We sat at the bar where the bartender Scott gave us a couple recommendations after I had asked about the frozen margaritas. I’m not a huge tequila person (yeah yeah, not the best place to be for happy hour), but they can make other drinks without. My friend ordered a frozen house marg and I ordered a frozen house marg with watermelon muddled. We ordered the Z Trio which came with their salsa, queso, and guac. It was fantastic. I really loved the queso! The thin chips also pair well with the trio. Regarding customer service...Scott was helpful, but I’m not sure if it was because he was in a bad mood or if I asked way too many questions that he seemed somewhat annoyed. He rarely checked in on my friend and I, even though we were sitting right in front of him at the bar. It’s astounding how people rave about the customer service here, but I simply did not receive that same experience. The food and drinks were good nonetheless. I would come by again for happy hour out of convenience since it’s close, but wouldn’t go out of my way for this spot.
Stopped in for dinner as this was with walking distance of our Air BnB. Food did not disappoint. Wife's frozen margarita was partially frozen but it was good and so was my mojito. Wife has the pork & chorizo meatloaf and I had the chicken dish off the summer menu. Both were well seasoned with just the right amount of heat to give it a great flavor. We'll definitely go back.
*Green chile pork & tamale eggs Benedict. *Kahaul & Agave French toast. My friends had items above and they really liked it. *Capital beef barbacoa omelet. I had the omelet and it was good. The barbacoa was so tender and not greasy. All the ingredients meshed well together. *Parking: I went to 6th st location on a Sat, 11am. I got lucky and found free parking in front of restaurant. Later than that, expect to drive around for parking, as it's limited.
Very welcoming staff, laid back atmosphere, and the food was worth the visit. If you are looking for great flavor with a little kick at the end this is your place to eat. The menu should be updated to what is actually available. The dishes that piqued my curiosity were no longer available. Either way this place is worth a second visit.
I visited Z'Tejas over the weekend for brunch. They have a good selection of food items and you can order off the normal lunch menu. One thing I love is the corn bread. it is amazing when served hot and fresh. We all had a good time enjoying our food. The wait staff is hit or miss. previous experiences we've had better service, this time, our server was often gone for long periods of time. We had to ask others, for refills of our drinks. He forgot items that we ordered. It seemed like he was having an off day. I recommend getting the bottomless mimosas or the Bloody Marry Bar. It is the best way to round out any brunch.
Era buena la comida y el servicio
I had a hard time on choosing the star-rating for this review. I've visited Z'Tejas before, but it has been several years. I was in the area with my husband yesterday and boasted to him about the place from my previous visit. Let's start off with that I love the atmosphere. It is very cozy and quaint. I was immediately disappointed that the Bloody Mary Bar has been discontinued as of last year. I had really talked this up, but that is okay. We each ordered a Chambord Margarita and it was absolutely delicious! We had queso for an appetizer - it was just queso, which is good to me anywhere. We split the Southwest Eggs Benedict and really enjoyed it! I would stop in to eat it again. The portions seemed smaller than I remembered, but that isn't a breaker. Service was extremely mediocre - we weren't really checked on, asked how our food was, and it took awhile for a water refill. It wasn't horrible service, but for the time of day and lack of tables, I would've expected better. I would visit again, yes, but I would know not to expect as much.
Adequate Tex-Mex. So yeah, this is Austin, which means there are about a bajillion Tex-Mex places around, this being one of them. The thing is, it's pretty much average at that (Arroyo, just down the street, is far, *far* better). The food is, well, TexMex, and won't surprise you in any way. Mind you, the menu, at first glance, _does_ look interesting, but that kinda fades once you actually get the food. It's all perfectly good, but there is really nothing that makes you want to come back. Then again, you're not going to be *unhappy* you came either, and, I guess that's a good thing? Anyhow, go to Arroyo...
The main thing that saved this place was our friendly waiter, who was very apologetic for the long wait for our food and drinks. But when the food did come, it was very underwhelming. Tacos were cold, rice and beans were bland. Even the drinks were subpar and weren't even filled all the way up. Atmosphere was cool though.
I have been here before during COVID and it was actually alot better than my last trip. I wanted Mexican food and for the most part it is, but they claim its Southwest. I asked if they had a burrito and they didnt. I was kind of shocked considering they have catfish beignets and chicken fried steak on the menu of Mexican dishes. How do you not have some kind of burrito? Why is chicken fried steak listed as a specialty plate? The other thing was we had 7 people and they brought chips and no salsa? I had to ask for more chips as we waited for what seems 30 minutes to get our food in a half empty restaurant. Overall it just was a bummer and luckily the rest of my party was not able to get there in time. I wont go back.
My overall experience at Z’Tejas was very underwhelming. I enjoyed the atmosphere, the friendliness of the staff, and my mimosa but that was about it. Even as our area started to clear out, service was incredibly slow for us to the point where I noticed that tables that sat down after us were receiving food before we were. After giving our drink order, we were told that cornbread would be out to our table soon: never even saw that cornbread. We sipped on our drinks for close to an hour before our entrees came out. My boyfriend had to get a new plate of tacos because they came cold and had obviously been sitting out. I had the Chrorizo Migas and I liked the presentation, but for how many ingredients were in it…it was pretty bland. I ate a couple of bites and decided that I would take it home to season, reheat and eat later. There has been a lot of hype around Z’Tejas…and for me, they didn’t live up to that this time around. I do want to come back during a less busy hour and try something different! Update: Both my boyfriend and I were given an email to talk to management about our experience and for them to “make it right” I’m sure that’s JUST for aesthetics to make them look better on review platforms because no one has bothered to reply to both of our emails. Either that, or they’re always “busy” and need better time management skills. I don’t think there’s a need to give Z’Tejas another chance, plenty of other places with better food and definitely better customer service skills 😊
I went here for brunch on a Saturday. There were hardly any people there, yet the service was extremely slow. It took forever for them to bring our drinks, take our orders and bring out our food. Even worse, we were pretty sure our waitress was intoxicated. I ordered a Bloody Mary and the Mighty Z Migas. The Bloody Mary was okay, but the food was far from enjoyable. The Migas were incredibly bland; I felt like I was eating cardboard. They also came out already a little cool so I'm not sure how long they sat there before they were brought out to me. The side of black beans had a weird spice to them that didn't compliment the flavor of the beans at all. I substituted the fruit for the potato cakes; those ended up lacking flavor as well. They still were a better choice than the fruit as it turns out. My friend said her fruit was clearly old and no longer fresh. She ordered the Smoked Chicken Breakfast Enchiladas and said they were very bland. The restaurant is cute and everything on the menu looks like it would be really good but they did not deliver, especially at the price point they are charging. I definitely will not be eating there again.
