For dinner, we decided to stop at the custom house. I had the jumbo clams and my wife had the tri-tip Cobb salad. I also got the onion rings as I ordered to my clams. The clams were not exactly jumbo, but very tasty and the onion rings as a side I got three. But overall, they were still very good. My wife’s Cobb salad wasn’t exactly a Cobb salad however to tri-tip was cooked beautifully. And the salad itself was very well done. I shouldn’t mention they were dog, friendly, and even had a dog menu. I would go again. I would just change what I ordered.

My wife and I stopped here and certainly weren't disappointed. The views were perfect, giving perfect sights of the beach and the pier. The food was exceptional as well. I had the chicken and she had the Spanish omelet. The service was kind and went great. And enjoying the beach after eating is always a benefit as well. Custom House is a nice restaurant but you grab your own menu and seat yourself, then have to pick up your own food at the counter. I got the cioppino bowl. The food is well seasoned. The sauce is a little overwhelming in contrast to the seafood. The service is good but I wish there were actual servers. I'd come back some day to try other options.

Called in for an early dinner. Seated in a prime spot in the front window. Lovely view! The server was very helpful and friendly. The food came out quickly and was perfectly fine. Equivalent to a pub meal in Australia. They had some nice beers on tap. Overall, a nice, chilled out place to enjoy a casual meal.

They have a dog menu! First place I’ve ever been to that has a separate dog menu! Luna loved the ground beef and rice and devoured it, and the view was great. I liked my strawberry cocktail and the clam chowder was delicious. We enjoyed our meal here out on the patio!

not the custom house of old. basically take out. atmosphere not even close to what it was. quality and selection of food is such we won't go back and we live here. try Fat Cats instead.

The Custom House – Avila Beach Stopped by The Custom House during the Fourth of July rush. The place was clean and the staff was attentive maybe to attentive, but the food overall missed the mark for me. My Ratings: • Clam Chowder: 1.5/5 • Chicken Breast Sandwich: 2/5 • Tater Tots: 5/5 • Onion Rings: 5/5 • French Fries: 1/5 The chicken in my sandwich was cooked perfectly—tender and juicy—but it had almost no seasoning, so the whole thing tasted bland and like it needed something extra. The clam chowder was also disappointing and not as creamy as I prefer. My sister had a breakfast burrito and said it was decent but also a bit bland. For $27 (one sandwich, fries, and a cup of clam chowder), it felt pricey for the quality. If you don’t want to lose your parking spot, it’s a convenient option—but be ready to add salt, ketchup, or plenty of ranch. Overall: 2.9/5 Based on my experience, I probably wouldn’t return.

So we went down in April for my birthday and they had changed the restaurant so you had to order at the counter and they bring it to your table. You kind of have to the bus your own tables. We really liked it when they had the waiters or waitresses come by and ask if you needed something else, the staff was great. You didn’t have to get up and you didn’t have to bus your own tables. Food still good but I like the old way where they came out to your table. We just find it more relaxing the way it used to be, however it looks nice. They did a great job inside but our opinion if they can go back to the way it used to be we really liked it a lot. I also didn’t realize you can order food at the bar as well, but someone still has to bring it out to you again. We do love the food, but we We’ll be down next month and we’re not sure if we’re going go to eat at the custom house this time. Great bartenders for sure but you have go to them to order

They are very busy and under staffed be patient. Clam chowder and burger are good, nachos a little disappointed.. Ceviche teacup approx.. Good but beware. Ocean view great. You must reserve the booths or else they sit you at a table or outside.

What the hell happened to this place? It was fine casual dining for decades and has devolved into a tourist trap garbage cafeteria.... except they kept the fine dining pricing. Literally served, actually you have to go get it yourself, on plastic cafeteria trays and every appetizer we ordered was nothing more than freezer to fryer. There is no cooking going on here anymore. I spent many days at the Custom House in the 90's and 00's and I'll never be back again. The legacy is dead. Rick's next door is no better. I am actually depressed saying this, but I think everything that made Avila great (except the weather) is gone.

Dont go here if you are expecting to have a nice sit down meal. You have to order and serve yourself now. The food was ok but could have been better. The chicken quesedilla was so greasy I could barely eat it. My dad got the jumbo clam strips and were burnt and tough to eat. The fish and chips are pretty good but not worth going back ever. Clam chowder was decent. Overall won't be going back.

Worst rebranding ever! Went from a decent sit down restaurant (only one of two in main Avila) to a generic order-at-the-counter restaurant! SO disappointing! Menu is mostly fried seafood options with less than appealing salads and sandwiches. All very generic and the taste is just that. Overpriced and not good! We watched so many people turn and walk out. Such a bummer to lose the only family friendly sit down restaurant in Avila! We will not be returning. We’ll DoorDash from quality restaurants in the future when staying here. Very disappointed.

We went here to experience a great breakfast that we were so accustomed to and much to our surprise, it is not the same anymore. How sad. What used to be a wonderful feeling sit down beach vibe is now a fast food style place with very few options. What used to be a busy place where you couldn’t hardly find a table is now a desolate place. Very sad. Whoever changed this probably just put themselves out of business. We will not be returning. Hula Hut just down the street has better food now and feels more nostalgic.

Very disappointing. They remodeled the place and turned it into a fast-food, cafeteria, plastic-waste disaster. Tables were not bussed timely and it was difficult to figure out if tables/seats were occupied because you have to go up to order and then go get your order when ready (like musical chairs). No paper towels in the bathroom...in which you have open several (dirty) door handles to get in/out. The food was very limited compared to the previous menu. Maybe they're still figuring out the process, but other locals expressed their dislike as well. I didn't feel like fried food, so I went with the breakfast burrito (served all day). Simple right? Well they couldn't figure out how to wrap it tight enough, and cut it in half (diagonally) which ensured a big mess. The salsa and sour cream is served in side containers so you have to assemble the mess. I took a few bites and threw it away with the other abundance of garbage/plastic waste. My wife ordered the carne asada fries and was equally disappointed. They used seasoned fries which made it way too salty. The remodel was likely designed to cut down on service costs and dish/glass/untensil washing, but the result is a cheap-feeling, uncomfortable snack shack. We will not be returning anytime soon.
