We stopped here for lunch on our way to Makers Mark for a bourbon tour. Service was quick, the dining room was comfortable, a bit loud as others have noted, but added to the atmosphere. The highlight though was the food! My husband had the country fried steak and it was the thickest piece of country fried steak I’ve ever seen, and I had the hot brown. I’ve always been hesitant to order it in restaurant, but I saw one on a plate as we were led to our table and decided to give it a try, and boy am I glad I did! They also had a specialty drink menu. Since it was fall, I went for the apple cider mule, and it was very yummy! I look forward to going back again and trying some other items on the menu.

While in town, couldn't pass up stopping by and getting a bowl of the Tavern's famous Burgoo. Delicious! And a very nice cold, fresh side salad. Good service. Good food. Nice gifts like bourbon chocolates and hats, candles etc to choose from in the lobby. They say that Jesse James stayed here and George Washington and more, as it was the first stage stop west of the Allegheny mtns. A lot of history in this building which was restored after it caught fire.

Love the history of Talbotts, along with Jesse James backstory (He stayed here and had a shoot-out upstairs). The food was good (not great, but very good) My wife had the fish, which was a little dry and I had the pot roast which was nice, but nothing special, the room was great, so much history, and the Service super nice! I am not a fan when you have to pay extra for bread, but I guess it is becoming more normal. I still think this is a must for anyone visiting the area, and I would repeat. Do ask where you want to be seated, the first room was dingy, cold, and loud. We asked to be seated in the corner room, which was SO MUCH NICER as you can see in the pictures.

We came for lunch. Wonderful server, Danielle. Tried some new foods we have heard about like the scotch egg. Crunchy and delicious with the mustard. Food was fresh and hot when served. The selection of seasonal food and drinks gave plenty to select from. The atmosphere is amazing with the heritage filled rooms.

We only came by for the food. Service was fast, food came quickly, food temperature and flavor was great. She had the Kentucky Hot Brown and I had the Country Fried Steak. This was our first visit and we will definitely be back.

The restaurant has really awesome food! Are there twice, had the burgoo stew both times, also had the walnut crusted chicken, the sauce was amazing, beef stew & the hit brown. Can't go wrong with any of it!

Came here for dinner! Fall Menu was excellent! Beer cheese app was tasty and so was the Apple Cider mule! Had the fall special of chicken spaghetti squash and it was great. Great atmosphere, great service. And the self guided tour after was cool!

The beer cheese on the pretzel bites was amazing. I had the buffalo chicken wrap with side salad. Very fresh and tasty. I really appreciated history and the decor of the location. Jesse James is said to have shot up a wall there and it is said the place is haunted. Maybe it is.....

Sept. 3rd. We had apps at the Tavern. The staff was on point. Preservation Distillery was doing a tasting. We were going to try to be of their tasting, but when the food arrived the line grew fast for free whiskey. Great time in historic place.

Located in Bardstown's old city center, it was a great stop for our family outing. We were excited to stop at an historical building. Lunch was exceptional (Kentucky Brown, bread pudding, sweet tea), seeing the original history, self-guided tour with audio, seeing where Jesse James shot up the mural, the old wood floor, gift shop and friendly staff. We now want to plan a stay at the Tavern!

So good, my husband had a a hot brown I had the grand fried appetizer and then the peach cobbler with ice cream.. they had three different kinds of cobbler. I'd suggest a cobbler sampler on the menu. People would buy that for themselves or they could offer larger portions to share... Yes, please

The oldest Bourbon bar in the country! Great food and drinks. They even have Burgoo soup, hot brown, and chess pie! Fantastic!

Small town America at its best. Charming and inviting. Should have been a Rockwell painting. We only had a early afternoon lunch there. Nice historic location

History well preserved. Stopped in to have some lunch and a cocktail. Both were delicious! Server was very friendly and attentive without being annoying. Would definitely return.

What a very cool Inn and Restaurant! We loved walking through looking at all of the history in the inn. And the restaurant is yummy. Delicious food, great atmosphere. Ask for Kennedy. She will take good care of you.

This place is so cool. Such a cool little piece of history and being able to give yourself a tour with the audio tour that is provided is an awesome way to spend your time while waiting on your food!

Est. 1771 — the world’s oldest bourbon bar. What an experience! The people you’ll meet feel like they’re straight out of an episode of Yellowstone. An absolute must-visit.

Had a very nice lunch here. Lots of charm and history. Their little museum upstairs is a must see. I would love to spend a night or two at the inn sometime.

Absolutely Fantastic Experience! From start to finish, our visit was unforgettable. The walnut chicken, pot roast, bread pudding, and cornbread with bourbon butter were all absolutely delicious—each bite was full of flavor and comfort. The drinks were on another level—expertly crafted and worth the visit alone. Special shoutout to Haley, our server, who was truly the best we’ve ever had. Friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience even better. After dinner, we took a stroll to explore the fascinating history of Jesse James—a unique and fun addition to the night. We capped it off with another drink while enjoying some fantastic live music. Highly recommend this place if you’re looking for great food, great service, and a memorable evening.

This is our first visit to Bardstown and The Bourbon Trail. Our first stop is at The Old Talbott Tavern. We got a couple apps and we tried the Bourbon Glazed Pork Chop. The Bourbon BBQ meatballs and the Fried Banana Peppers were both great. Never even seen fried banana peppers before but they were great. The old bar down below was great as well. The oldest bourbon bar in the world. The drinks there were great. We both loved the feel of this old gem.

Wonderful experience. Our server, Johnathan, went above and beyond to make sure our meal was perfect. My husband has alpha gal - and Johnathan helped us navigate his options. Great time. Wonderful food. Definitely recommend!

This place is a 10/10 for any history lover. I had some excellent bourbon here, but the highlight was getting a full tour of the hotel. Being a relative of Jesse James, it was a truly wild experience to stand in the actual room where he stayed. You can still see the bullet holes in the ceiling from the night he started shooting because he thought he saw 'ghostly butterflies' in his room—a legendary story that feels so much more real when you’re standing right there. I also got to see a gun and holster on display that belonged to him. As a historical reenactor who plays Jesse, being in a spot with such deep family history was incredible. The staff was great and the atmosphere is exactly what you’d want from a historic Kentucky tavern!

Great menu, good food, reasonable prices, attentive staff, quaint atmosphere. Had a BLT, creative use of fried green tomatoes in it, added to overall flavor profile.

Gluten-free options were easy to find and the food was delicious. Service was efficient even though they were busy. The history of the place was a great read while waiting for our food. Great vibes and a solid dining option.

The room was very clean and spacious. The bed was very comfortable. It is walking distance to many of the museums and distilleries. We were there on a Saturday night and being next door to the tavern we were mildly concerned it would be noisy. We didn’t hear anything. The free breakfast is good and made to Order. You can’t go wrong staying here.

We stopped here for lunch on our way south and were glad we did. This historic 18th century building has been providing hospitality for many years and continues to do so today. We tried the traditional Hot Brown and a Rachel and both were top notch. Portions were more than generous and prices were reasonable. Service was good and parking is free outside on the street or in their small lot beside the building. Our only negative comment was the background music. They were playing 60's rock and it might have been appropriate for the customers who were mostly retired folks but it just didn't fit with the historical significance of the place but that was a minor annoyance. Over it's 5 stars in my book and highly recommended. Bardstown has a lot of other small, good restaurants but if you have to choose only one, this should be your choice IMHO.

Dinner was delicious! Lucky to get in without reservation. Service was top notch. Our server, Kennedy even chased us down with our forgotten to-go box.

Had a brief wait for a table but sat at the bar until ready. Seated in an old room with lots of character. Ordered drinks and food with prompt service. The food was better than expected. The steak was great, mashed potatoes needed some butter. Whatever they lacked the steak made up for. My wife had the bourbon walnut chicken which was amazing. May have liked it better than the steak. Definitely worth the try if visiting!

My wife and I dined there Oct 3. My wife had the veggie burger and fries and I had the shepherds pie. Everything was delicious. Our server was Emily and she was phenomenal. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience. We will definitely return soon.

We have wanted to visit the Tavern for a long time. We got to swing in for lunch today and enjoy a tour as well. They have self-guided tours via an app that was incredible! We are planning to come back for an overnight stay soon!

What an amazing experience it was to stay in the oldest stagecoach stop in America! The history of this building is fascinating, and I loved how they blended the historic architecture with modern touches. As a facilities manager with many years of experience, I tend to notice things that might need fixing—sorry, I can't help it! For instance, the rooms could benefit from upgraded mini-splits with dehumidifiers attached, and the faucets and showerheads need to be cleaned, as the sweet limestone water is clogging them up. If you'd like, feel free to respond to my post, and I can send you a list of the things I noticed. Overall, the staff was amazing, and the food at the tavern was fantastic! The location is perfect; it allows for easy walking and visiting all the interesting shops in the area, and it's close to several distilleries.

We popped in for lunch after getting a recommendation from a previous spot. Our waitress Danielle was so wonderful and made our lunch truly memorable. We got the Kentucky Burgoo, Stuffed Mushrooms, and the BLT with fries. Everything was delicious. There’s a cute little gift shop in the front of the restaurant as well.

I was finally able to make the trip to see this gem. I drove 2 hours to visit and it did not disappoint. The hostess was absolutely adorable and friendly. She, along with other staff provided me with details/history of the Talbott Tavern as well as the town. Jonathan was my server. He was very pleasant and helpful. Dani was my bartender. She too, was so pleasant. The food was delicious and the drinks were fantastic! I look forward to coming back.

Hospitality 12 out of 10. I cannot begin to praise them enough! We were just looking for a place to warm up and have afternoon coffee, and they treated us like royalty! Gave us the best table and made a pot of coffee just for us. The desserts here are magnificent! Plus the history of the place is the cherry on top. Definitely planning to come back:) God bless!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Phenomenal Service and Amazing Food at The Old Talbott Tavern! I had the pleasure of being served by Johnathan, and he absolutely made my visit exceptional. From the moment I sat down, he was warm, professional, and incredibly attentive without ever being overbearing. His knowledge of the menu and drink recommendations were spot-on. I ordered the Spiced Old Fashioned and the Hot Brown, and both were nothing short of fantastic. The cocktail was perfectly balanced with just the right amount of spice, and the Hot Brown was rich, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. Johnathan checked in at just the right moments to make sure everything was perfect, and his friendly personality really elevated the whole dining experience. If you’re visiting Bardstown or The Old Talbott Tavern, do yourself a favor and ask for Johnathan. Outstanding service, delicious food, and an unforgettable experience! Highly recommend.

Small place, we made a reservation for 5 on an app but didn't go through apparently since it wasn't on there system but seated us. Menu looked good and wanted to try a lot of different things. The 5 of us had something different and everything was delicious. I was thinking the portion was small but it filled me up. I did get the peach cobbler but wasn't impressed by it, it only had 5 peaches in it and had a cake on top and had ice cream.

Amazing historical inn (now B&B, restaurant, gift shop and Bourbon bar. So beautiful inside! Our food was delicious! They had an additional seasonal menu of which we tried two appetizers and two specialty cocktails. All were very tasty! Lots of light and view of people walking by from the large windows. Don't miss walking upstairs and looking around at the truly historical rooms that they've made historically themed rooms. Beautiful! They also have more modern rooms available. ** It is booked YEARS in advance during the Bourbon Festival.

My husband & I stayed here over Thanksgiving for our anniversary. This place is steeped in history, and staff were so gracious with their time to share the stories of the tavern with us. We stayed in the Washington Irving suite, and the room was very nice and spacious. There is a shared outdoor balcony that is very nice, and the museum adjacent to the Jesse James room was so interesting! We ate at the tavern’s restaurant for dinner during our stay, and our server, Emily, really made us feel right at home and gave us a few laughs. The food was top notch; we enjoyed the barbecue chip nachos, walnut crusted chicken, the hot brown, and the Talbott tavern pie. The pie was so good I ordered a second slice to go. This place is well worth going out of your way to visit if you enjoy seeing American history in an interactive format.

We stopped by for lunch-had the country fried steak, mashed potatoes and green beans; walnut crusted chicken with fries and coleslaw; and the fish sandwich with homemade chips. All were pretty good, but what would make us go back was the appetizer-cornbread muffins with Bourbon Butter. Now those were outstanding!!!

L
Lauren Owens

We dined at the restaurant. The ambiance was amazing-I suggest taking the time to walk around and look at all of the interesting things on the wall, and head upstairs to see Jesse James’ room. It was very busy when we were there (Saturday-peak dinner rush) and our waitress was good, however we could tell they were a tad short staffed bc our sweet girl could barely keep up. The food was good and my friends enjoyed the specialty cocktails they ordered

This is a history buffs dream location! From whom stayed in the rooms, to the awesome bar downstairs, to the restaurant's food, all of it was great! I can't recommend just one plate to order, just enjoy and order what looks good, because it will be good! Their Burgoo is tasty, and their Prime Rib is to die for! Welcome to Bardstown Ky, walk around and enjoy the shops and pother foodie locations that are in the area!

Stayed recently on a short trip to visit some distilleries in the area. The location was fantastic and the room was very comfortable. The price of the room included breakfast, which was decent. Sadly we got cold food on our second day (even after it was remade it was still cold). We had some other issues with the room during our stay (housekeeping related) which we brought to the attention of the desk staff twice. Both times we were assured that they would discuss with their manager and someone would reach out to us. No one ever did. Over all the property is very nice and likely we would stay again. It was just disappointing that no one seemed to truly take ownership for our experience there.

Stopped in for dinner to celebrate my wife's birthday. She ordered the Bourbon walnut chicken which she thought was wonderful. I ordered shrimp and cheesy grits. The shrimp was pretty good, but I can't say the same for the grits. They were quite dry and cheese was noticeably missing as evidenced in the attached photo. The restaurant was also very noisy.

A
Amy Howell

The food was definitely mediocre bar food. The staff was great besides the bartender. She seemed to forget what she was doing even though they weren't that busy. Valentines special was definitely lacking, the pork loin was more like butterfly chops, not very tender, gravy was under seasoned and roasted smashed potatoes were very greasy.

R
Ralph Z.

Food was average. Service was terrible, and this was a Wednesday. I blame the management for not having the staff to handle the very moderate crowd. Bar tender and server (2), were pleasant and doing the best they could. People were leaving before being approached by a server because of waiting too long. Two people to handle the bar and tavern tables was clearly not enough. . This review has nothing to do with the hotel or restaurant side of the place.

We arrived around 430pm on 10/16. Ben (short, thin, blonde hair and handlebar mustache) took our order without writing it down. Our order (to go) had an app, 2 entrees, and 2 sides. Later when my husband was away from the table, Ben came to confirm our app and only the app, nothing else. At about 530pm, our food was dropped off at our table minus one entree. My husband brought it to Ben's attention, where he promptly said he confirmed the order with me and I forgot about it. NEVER BLAME A PAYING CUSTOMER FOR NOT DOING YOUR JOB. He later told another bartender, dark haired woman, that he forgot to place the order. There was no apology, no offer to make it, nothing. 1) he should've written down the order if he couldn't remember, 2) he should've confirmed the entire order instead of just the app, 3) he should've admitted HIS mistake instead of blaming me for not confirming something he never asked me about 4) he should've apologized. I've never had an experience where a server blamed me for not doing their job.

We went in NOT busy! 1). Waitress walked by no hello be right with you. Then bartender 1 walked by us - nothing! Bartender 2 walked by - nothing!! 😳Did I say not busy? Only time they said anything is when we were walking out one bartender said “ you folks have a good evening which I reply “ Thanks since no one ever acknowledged us in 15 minutes being there”. He was nice enough to say sorry but not ‘ hey come back I’ll take care of you- just sorry. 😳what kind of place is this? And a friend recommended them! Good luck to future clients. What is really sad is they are a bed and breakfast too and I went to look at booking 3 rooms day after Christmas for family get together! Well… not now.

Service and Location are great. The wife and I were staying in town for a bourbon trail week. We came in were seated right away the staff was awesome. The food on the other hand was not. I had the mango pork chop it was OK very heavy on the pepper very heavy my mashed potatoes and gravy were cold and the potatoes tasted old. My wife ordered the shrimp and grits shrimp were fine but the grits were not good super dry and clumpy.... would we come back Nope.... there are better places just a few 100 feet away to eat....
