Coffee and services are great. A bit crowded
It's the OG Peet's. It doesn't have the fancy bells and whistles of other locations but the history.... The old bench.... The staff that have been around for years.... The regulars. It's iconic. Pro tip: walk down to Cheeseboard and get a superior pastry to go with your strong coffee.
Very friendly staff. So many regular customers. <3
I'm normally not a fan of Peet's because their coffee is too dark and bitter for my liking, but this store is great. The employees are all friendly and helpful, the drinks are consistent and good, and the store itself is well-decorated and welcoming.
This is where it all started. Different vibe now within and without - I can only imagine the craziness that would ensue if they ever tried filling the neighborhood with the wonderful aroma of roasting beans again as they did back in the day, and who serves brew in ceramic cups anymore? However, staff remains friendly, service oriented, and knowledgeable. Coffee remains excellent, the best you'll find, and in recent eons the company has become quite serious about encouraging their growers and supporting marketplace reforms to further assist them. Brewed coffee reflects the business' global vision so maybe not the exact same thing day after day but you can learn a lot from drinking their varying selections and asking questions of the baristas. The baked munchies are always on with the quality and tastiness in my experience.
Love Peet's coffee. The original location has a little museum in the back which is wonderful and charming. A coffee lover's must go-to destination for a brief history of coffee, old world makers and the story of Mr. Peet himself. I love seeing the collection of the different company logos and coffee packaging throughout the years.
My favorite Peet’s! It’s the original shop - how cool is that? I live in the beighborhood so have been here many times. The staff has always been warm and sweet. Never a bad experience.
Hey, it's Peet's! It was here that this old Texas boy discovered what good coffee was all about when I started coming here in the mid-seventies. I can remember talking about coffees and roasting with Mr. Peet. Didn't realize for a long time after that, having gone back home, that Peet's had become such a big deal. I now come back here when I travel through the bay area as sort of a pilgrimage and find the present and my memories blend together very nicely.
The original Peet's coffee location is always fun to visit. It's worth coming here just to see where Mr. Peet put out his shingle. I imagine he was still working the counter when I first came here in 1972. The place hasn't changed much in all that time, and the barista that served me was friendly and efficient.
OMG, the first Peet's! Just randomly found this in the middle of the neighborhood. So much nicer than the first Starbucks in Pike Place. And of course everything was delicious
Great coffee, pastries, and service. what more do you need?
First Peet’s! I love coming here. After I go on walks in Tilden Park, I like to stop here for a latte or an earl grey tea. Peet’s loose leaf tea is quite exceptional and worth the price!!
A million reasons I love Peet's. The absolute best coffee anywhere. Usually busy but they handle it well. Great snacks too!
I'm a big fan of Peet's! The location on Vine St has become my go-to spot for a morning pick-me-up on my way to work since I moved to Berkeley. Imagine my excitement when I discovered that this shop was actually the first Peet's location ever opened in the country! The history behind the brand adds to the experience of sipping on their delicious coffee. Don't miss out on a chance to visit this iconic spot and enjoy some top-notch coffee.
This is the original store which houses a 40' long Peet's/Coffee Museum!!! In the final outcome, since I believe that Peet's (the original of this genre) and SB both train their employees on great customer service, the main difference is that Peet's does not scoop out the foamy head like SB does, and probably uses a slightly better array of ingredients. Baked goods at Peet's, however, are vastly superior... Then walk over and get a falafel sandwich (with extra napkins) at Mediterranean Grill, or Saul's, both with their own succulent takes on this savory classic...and a short walk away...
This Pete's is a diamond in the rough. It is located on Vine street in Berkeley. It allows you to find a park easily, and they're open.5:30am most days of the week. It is quite unusual to find someone at that hour to be cheerful, and to ensure your order is correct.. This is what you can expect when you go there. Service with a smile. Please keep this location in business. It is a delightful spot, which needs to be recognized. Please support and enjoy. Thanks!
Original Peet's location.. I like taking out of town friends here, but I especially like coming here & sitting outside to enjoy my drink & read.. It's always busy (sometimes it's hard to find a place to sit) & the staff is still super friendly. It's got a nice unhurried "I can finally relax!" neighborhood feel you don't get at the downtown location..
I love Peet's Coffee, because of it's bold and strong coffee. It's a liquid guarantee that you'll be vibrantly awakened, without worrying about the flavor of your particular flavor of coffee. There's no bitter or burnt aftertaste and I love the selections of creamers and sweetener choices. The app gives you the ability to check in and get a free drink after 15 check ins. Yes, I'm very satisfied!
Peets is the best! I was so happy to walk into the original Peets. They are very original and authentic, and by that I mean that they do not sell hot food only pastries for any of those who are wondering. During my visit today the cashier was very kind and informative. I felt very welcomed.
I love Peet's coffee from the first time I tried it, and it's been my go-to coffee of choice. I've tried many, many types and brands of coffee and I keep coming back to Peet's. There is just something wholesome about the flavor, taste, and strength of their coffee compared to others. Whenever I get a chance to, I go to the Vine St. Peet's location to get my coffee fix since I work close by. This location is a bit hidden in a quiet area above Shattuck and is so nice to walk by the small shops and restaurants here. You'll never know what you'll find. I don't think I've ever been disappointed by getting coffee from Peet's here. The corner shop is so quaint and unassuming that you'll miss it if you aren't aware it's there. Once inside the shop is just like any other Peet's shop. Sitting space is okay, lots of space but not too many tables and chairs. It's okay though, I usually just take my coffee and have a nice walk if I must. There are just lots of things to see around here.
Hard to believe it is older than Starbucks. I don’t particularly like Peet’s coffee or food but since it is historic I showed up and had a good time nonetheless
The original Peet's has a bit more to offer than just great coffee. Lots of photos from Pete and his early years.
Much better than SB. Also it is the founder of SB working place before he created Star bucks.
Great people serving good, hot coffee drinks and a nice variety of beans. The little museum by the bathrooms is fun to look at. Sit outside and enjoy people watching while sipping your drink.
The first Peet’s. I get coffee here quite often and they’re always fairly fast.
I grew up down the street from this location in the early 80's (I think the original Peet's?) my parents were passionate about going there and I feel the same going there now, always delicious!

Walnut Square original Peets in Berkeley. Don't miss the museum in the back hall. Starbucks founders learned from Alfred Peet before starting Starbucks in Seattle.
Great location to have a cup of coffee in the evening after school
THE BEST - THE ONE AND ONLY - THE MOTHERSHIP! I wish at this time, to celebrate and salute the staff, at the Mother store on Vine and Walnut in Berkeley, for their exceptional bravery, fortitude and (Given the demographic) astonishingly amiable and benevolent manner. Their bright example of cooperation and friendship, goes above and beyond, and sheds much needed sunshine across this darkened land, battling the forces of seasonal depression, even in it's throes of political unrest, and is a beacon of freedom and justice for all who yearn for connection, and all for the price of a cup of coffee or tea! Their tireless and fearless contribution to the wellbeing of this sacred monument of caffeinated consciousness, will echo throughout time, and serve as a cornerstone of Berkeley's greatness. I salute them! The greatest Staff of ALL time! Yours truly, AMADEO. (I mean this in all seriousness)

Visiting the original Peet's is a treat. The vibe is authentic coffee house. Outdoor tables along the sidewalk add to the neighborhood. Very cool place to take other coffee afficianados.
One of the original Peet's coffees, their espresso is pretty good. There isn't a whole lot of seating is this particular location, but the service is friendly and it's usually pretty crowded no matter what time it is. I'd recommend walking up the street a ways to Philz Coffee.
Whoa...all these years of coming here and no review...until now. I used to drive down here in the 80's to stock up on coffee and then trek back to Sacramento. It was like a ritual. Now you can find Peet's everywhere, thankfully. The corner location is like a tourist attraction; while sitting here two young women posed in front of the coffee grinder out in the back. The first Peet's Coffee. The back area, that was once the roasting room, is now like a mini-museum of sorts with lots of photos, a coffee grinder and plenty of space. They could probably add some tables and chairs back here too. I discovered a secret button on the wall, push it and a video comes on the little flat screen monitor that illustrates the history of Peet's Coffee. Directly across from where the bar stool seating area is!
Been drinking Peet's coffee as far back as when Mr. Peet was behind the counter and not only could you smell the great coffee brewing but also the intoxicating aroma of coffee beans roasting. Like any good thing bought out by deep pockets (see Cody's Books, Andronico's Market) some is missing in the translation. But you would have to be pretty negligent to screw up Peet's.
The flagship store. Historic location. Great coffee; friendly, helpful staff. Outdoor tables without many cars driving by.
Not a big fan of coffee but I love frappes and they one nice ones, also their lemon cake its delicious.
Pretty good cinnamon swirl cake, lemon blueberry danish and pistachio and almond queen croissant. The chocolate chip cookie with sea salt had way too much salt and too little chocolate for my liking.
The original Peet's. It has all the normal Peet's stuff, with a little museum and sitting area added on to the normal Peets layout. Nice location in "Gourmet Ghetto" in Berkeley, so a selection of other nice food stores to visit after you've had your coffee 🙂 parking Is either on the street in the commercial district or the residential neighborhood adjacent, so you may be looking for a bit to find parking.
Lovely, trendy, local coffee shop just min off Shattuck Ave. Nice decor very unique. Friendly services. Seems mature, academic crowd, classic music. And excellent coffee.
Original location of the first Peet’s coffee branch. Prices, selection, and ambience seem to reflect my experience at other Peets’. The location has a kind of awkward interior design, which leads to relatively limited seating. Prices seem to be average, but the quality of the beverages pictured (iced red eye and Havana Cappucino) was very good. I will be back if I’m in the East Bay
Original Peet’s location. It looks like just a typical Peet’s. It’s very spacious and there’s plenty of seating.

I ordered a coffee for pickup and thanked the barista who was standing right by the pickup counter and she completely ignored me. Also the layout of this place is so awkward and I feel stared down by the customers whenever I walk in.
The original Peet's! Used to be my favorite, but like all good things in the good ol' USofA, after a series of acquisitions, culminating in the recent purchase by Keurig De Pepper, the quality of product and service declined with each newer, larger owner. In my latest visit, the barista told me " no worries" when I said I only want a small coffee. I wasn't worried, but maybe should have been. I get my coffee and proceed through the maze of teatottlers and laptop loungers, to find the condiments. After walking back and forth looking confused and totally ignored by the staff, I find the messy table with an assortment of sweeteners ( but no honey). I go for the raw sugar packets and notice there's no creamer of any kind. I figure I'll just sprinkle some cocoa powder and be satisfied with that, only the cocoa dispenser if empty. So, ok, I'll have my coffee black with sugar. Where are the stirrers? None to be found. After I stand in front of the baristers for a minute, being totally ignored, I blurt out that I need a stirrer, to which I am told that they are on the condiments counter. Round we go. Then I spy some almond creamer behind the counter and wait patiently again to catch the attention of staff, but they are busy discussing some macchiato minutiae, so I help myself. It seems that once they get your money (including tip) and slide a steaming beverage your way, you are on your own. Not quite what you'd call ' service'. These are minor complaints, I'm sure, but, a simple cup of coffee. In other places where I buy coffee, they seem to do their best to be sure you have what you need. Just a simple cup of coffee. It's all I wanted for my $4 (and requested tip starting at 18% upwards). I suppose this is why I usually brew my own at home.

As someone who really appreciates coffee and the hard work it takes to make a coffee from bean to cup, I was pretty excited to visit the first Peet’s. Unfortunately I can’t say I was impressed, mainly the bad attitude one of the staff seemed to have when I ordered, she seemed bothered. Maybe it was because it was almost closing time and they wanted to be done. 🤷🏻♂️ Regardless of the reason, I expect better service from such a reputable coffee chain. The coffee was ok. Better luck next time Peet’s.

Came in late afternoon. Coffee was decent as far as coffe goes no complaints there. Tried to sit down and relax after a 9 hour early morning shift. My nose was assaulted by urine, garbage, and other indescribable smells. I look to my left and right - homeless people everywhere without coffee. Place is already overwhelmed by students with laptops at tables taking up seating areas for 4 by themselves. Now unhygienic unpaying customers are making it just an awful place to rest and enjoy a coffee. You gotta keep them outside man. Im sorry, but that kind of thing (while humanitarian) makes the average person want to *stay away*.
Been here for 6 years. During the first two, this Peet's was really great. Then... It has been so unpredictable, from great coffee to some that are literally undrinkable. It all depends on the barista you get. The new baristas are just not good at making a good cup of coffee. Also, today the customer in front of me spoke for 10 about work, and their day with the cashier, completely disregarded rest of customers.
