We were blown away by the food - perfect experience! The flavors, textures, presentation, truly excellent across the board! The staff was super friendly and fast (but we didn’t feel rushed). I cannot recommend this place highly enough!! All vegan (and lots of gluten-free options), but I’m sure omnivores would enjoy the food just as much! If I lived in Berkeley I would be fat and broke, cause I would spend allllll my money at this restaurant. Please open a location in San Diego! Sorry for the bad picture attached. I was too focused on the food to take a proper picture! :)

I can't say enough good things about out visit to Tane Izakaya. The food was perfectly paced. The servers were sweethearts. The table beside us was extremely loud though, the large party really engulfed The space making conversation hard at our table. Can't wait to go back and try more offerings.

Very creative vegan sushi. Everything sounds intriguing and delicious. Visually gorgeous and great flavor. I’m not even a vegetarian but I wanted to try it. I’ll definitely go back!

I dont like sushi, and I was skeptical of a vegan sushi place. But wow everything was delicious! 6 of us ordered ~10 things and everything was so good! I am glad I tried this new adventure!

A small yet expensive and unique vegan sushi place with lot of options! gets crowded fast- try to Get there early. Service was excellent - friendly and swift! found the wedge rolls to be much more tasty than the overhyped point Reyes! I found pt Reyes too spicy and not that amazing. Just overhyped. the vegan ramen noodles were so so. I am not fan of high sodium load. Not for me.

Very delicious, all vegan sushi in a beautifully designed little restaurant. We had the Pacifica (loved the texture of the crispy tempura eggplant) & Point Reyes (perfectly spicy and flavorful). We also got the grilled mushrooms & spicy garlic ramen which, in my opinion, were underwhelming compared to the sushi. Our server, Tara, was very friendly and helped us narrow down our options. I will definitely be going back to try out all the different specialty rolls!

Update - we have come back a few times and their specialty rolls are delicious! The Agedashi tofu was amazing however found the classic rolls to be a bit underwhelming - we tried the spicy tofuna roll, Philadelphia roll, and the sweet potato roll.

I experienced Tane in Oahu the first time, and since finding out they have one in Berkeley, it's one of my favorite reasons to go to the Bay Area. The menu was created with such dynamic flavor profiles, and my mouth literally salivates every time I think about it. It's the only restaurant I have closed my eyes to thoroughly enjoy every layer of flavor..

We were so impressed with this place! The sushi tasted exactly like regular sushi. All of the rolls were very unique & delicious. Takeout was quick & easy! I can’t wait to go back

We went with family to have dinner on a weekend. It is better to have prior reservation since the place is small. The whole restaurant is vegan which was really good from our perspective. It is similar to Shizen in SFO which is a similar vegan sushi place. We ordered from the specialty rolls, The point Reyes, Barbers and the Kailua. We also ordered the brussel sprouts as well. The rolls were really good. I really liked the Barbers which is a set of 6 smoked beet sushi roll out of which one is really spicy ( like a game of russian roulette). The brussel sprouts were really crispy and the sauce was really tasty as well.

Amazing selection of vegan specialty ramen! Everything we tried was great. Love the Point Reyes sushi, perfect when paired with a lighter option like Leahi. The presentation is fantastic and the complex flavors in the sushi were awe worthy. We loved our time here, and will be back. Definitely up there as one of the best vegan sushi places in the bay area.

Such an awesome place! Service was amazing, FAST sushi (even specialty rolls!)

6/5 sushi place. This is peak sushi if you want to walk away without the guilt of dead tuna or still moving octopus tentacles in your mouth. Everything, including the edamame, is made with care and attention to flavor. The ramen was out of this world with incredible notes and a healthy spicy broth that can end all wars at once. I wish they had more dessert options, but no matter.

Good food and ambiance! We ordered a variety of rolls and dishes and were pleasantly surprised. You do not miss fish at all with these flavorful rolls and it curbed my sushi craving. Perfect for a date night or dinner with friends! On the more expensive side but totally worth it.

I love sushi and though I was intrigued about vegan sushi, I didn’t think it would compare. My fam wanted to try it, so I went along with an open mind. My goodness, I was so impressed! The colors and presentation of the rolls were tantalizing. Every bite was not only delicious, but included a myriad of flavors and textures that made the experience so enjoyable. Pictured below are: Sweet potato roll, Ewa The wedge, Pokai. My family loved them all, but we all agreed that the wedge was the best. I continue to find superb restaurants in this town. Tane is high on that list.

Delicious vegan sushi with a great atmosphere and good variety of options! Sushi tasted like the equivalent of real sushi according to my partner, who eats real sushi with fish!

I implore everyone to try this place ; vegan or not. The food was by far some of, if not the best, sushi I’ve ever had. Each item ordered was complex in flavor and worth the price. The best item was hands down the Eggplant tataki. You know that scene in Ratatouille where the food critic starts seeing fireworks?Same reaction. Only “criticism”, I suggest making a reservation and we came about 30 mins after opening and the restaurant was almost full except two spots at the bar.

Amazing vegan sushi options. Pacifica roll was incredible. The half moon roll was good but the mango tomato topping tasted like salsa thrown on the roll - was not a fan. Good service and cute place.

What a find! Exceptional plant based sushi. Best I’ve had (and that includes the best in Southern California). Fully vegan restaurant with world class options. Loved the gyoza and mushroom dish we had too. Both of our sushi rolls were excellent. Excited to return!

After going to the one in Honolulu many times, I knew I had to try this location. I am happy to report it is just as good as the original! The staff was very attentive & friendly. The rolls are absolutely amazing. My personal favorite is the wedge. Overall, a great place for vegans & non-vegans alike. I recommend making a reservation to ensure a spot. Can’t wait to come back! Parking: We were able to find street parking around the corner on a Friday at 5:30pm.

Vegan Japanese, reasonable prices, fun spot (5/5 green stars) I’m glad I took the time to write this review, or I wouldn’t have learned about Tane Vegan Izakaya. I learned that Izakaya is “a type of informal Japanese bar that serves alcoholic drinks and snacks,” similar to a tapas bar. I also learned that Tane in Berkeley is a sister branch to the original Tane in Honolulu! Also, Tane, means "seed" in Japanese and it embodies the restaurant’s “commitment to sustainable and innovative dining.” The same people are behind Shizen, the popular vegan Japanese restaurant in San Francisco. The founders’ goal is to protect the oceans by showcasing tasty Japanese dishes that are made without fish. I think they have succeeded in delivering a diverse menu of satisfying and interesting dishes. I’ve been there twice now and look forward to going back for a third visit. The second visit was marred a little bit by a loudmouth bore at the next table, but I can hardly hold Tane accountable for that... :D Just bear in mind that it can get a little noisy at night, when it’s busy. Staff members were friendly and efficient both times and the food seems to be quite consistent. The simple grilled mushrooms dish ($12) is a good example of the restaurant’s aesthetic – good ingredients, cooked quite simply so that their inherent qualities are not lost. I’m also giving Tane Vegan Izakaya 5/5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact. • Tane is a completely vegan restaurant. Adopting a plant-based diet is the top thing you can do to mitigate climate change, deforestation, animal cruelty, and food scarcity. • Tane strives to support suppliers that use eco-friendly practices (e.g., pesticide-free) and to minimize their carbon footprint “by reducing waste and sourcing seasonal ingredients directly from local farmers.” • The website for the original Honolulu branch of Tane lists some of the produce suppliers, but the Berkeley branch hasn’t done this (yet). Please join in and include a Green Stars rating with your own reviews!

The food was delicious! The miso soup, a Pacifico, Reyes roll, and passion fruit cheesecake were great. I preferred the a Pacifico roll, it has a very creamy texture. The Reyes roll was a bit too spicy for my preference. The atmosphere was intimate. We were lucky to get a table at 7p without a reservation, they said they were very booked out. We’d definitely go back to explore more of the menu.

We ordered gyoza, miso soup, agedashi tofu, tane katsu, eggplant tataki, grilled corn, eggplant nigiri, okra nigiri, mango nigiri and specialty rolls the wedge and pokai. We liked both the specialty rolls, maybe the wedge slightly more. Agedashi tofu, eggplant nigiri, tane katsu and eggplant tataki were my favorite appetizers. We enjoyed everything. We also got basil mojito and lychee sangria both the drinks were really good I liked the basil mojito more. Lychee black tea had a nice sweetish after taste. Thoroughly enjoyed our entire meal, our server gave us really good recommendations. Would love to eat here again.

If you are looking for a vegan-friendly place to enjoy delicious Japanese food, look no further than Tane Vegan Izakaya in Berkeley. This restaurant is the sister of Shizen in San Francisco, and it offers a variety of plant-based sushi, ramen, and other dishes that will satisfy your taste buds and your conscience. I had the spicy miso ramen, and it was the most excellent ramen I've ever tasted. The broth was rich and flavorful, the noodles were chewy and tender, and the toppings were fresh and crunchy. It was a perfect balance of spice and umami, and I couldn't get enough of it. Tane Vegan Izakaya is not only a great place to eat, but also a great place to support. The owners are committed to serving food that is designed to do no harm to animals and the environment. They use organic and local ingredients whenever possible, and they practice ecological restoration and vegan outreach. By choosing a plant-based diet, we can reduce our impact on the planet and help end world hunger. Research shows that if everyone shifted to a plant-based diet, we would reduce global land use for agriculture by 75%, and we would be able to feed everyone on existing croplands[^1^][7] [^2^][8]. That's a win-win situation for humans, animals, and nature. So, what are you waiting for? Head over to Tane Vegan Izakaya and treat yourself to some amazing vegan food. You won't regret it. #tanevegan #plantbased #vegansushi #veganramen #spicymisoramen #berkeley #california

Best Japanese vegan restaurant in the Bay Area with fantastic sushis, ramen and service. The spicy ramen was flavorful, with balanced spices. Sushis we got had a great spicy kick, and tasted just like sushis with real fish. Strongly recommend the Sunset, Wedge, Sweet Potato ones. Our waitress Lai was so kind, helpful and cheerful.

The place is small and gets filled up quickly. Ordered the spicy miso ramen (wasn't spicy enough for my tolerance), a pokai roll, and okra nigiri (a surprise smoky flavor and good texture).

Tane was nothing short of excellent. Creative, beautiful and cooked perfectly was the theme of what we tasted. We absolutely can't wait to go back. My roll was still crispy 2 hours later, and each piece was topped with mango salsa. I completely forgot to take pictures, and we had eaten so much of it when I remembered. We loved the simplicity and bold ginger of the pot stickers. The amazing specialty rolls, Inc the one that I described, Halfmoon. Then we ordered the pistachio ice cream, it comes with 2 scoops which is plenty for 2, even three people. It was a weird texture and lacked flavor, but my mom says that's the way they eat it in Japan? Next time I would get the cheesecake. PS. Did I mention it is all vegan!!! Even the non-vegan, got excited by the experience. Overall an amazing birthday night. Thank you.

We love every single dish we have ever tried here! Excellent vegan sushi. We especially love the Point Reyes as we love spicy food. The Sunset is also excellent and looks amazing due to the fire. My husband loves the Wedge as it has tempura and is therefore more filling/satisfying. The agedashi tofu and vegetable gyoza are also great shareables for the table.

Excellent vegan sushi place. A bit on the pricey but kind of worth the experience and ambience. Host was nice and recommended we try a soft and a crunchy sushi so that we get to experience both varieties. We tried a few crowd favorites and liked the eggplant tempura sushi the best overall hands down. Chill and cosy ambience. Appointment recommended as it gets pretty busy. Bonus on the menu is a flaming sushi option

Unbelievable vegan sushi restaurant that is usually crowded on weekends, and for good reason. While prices are about the same as regular sushi, the ingenious marinades, sauces, and fresh ingredients give an almost authentic experience that you can't even tell you're not eating real fish. Honestly, I even enjoyed their version of the Philadelphia Roll even more. The baker with the torched miso was probably my favorite roll but they all sound delicious and probably taste just as good. Service is smooth with little interaction with the server and the small room has a cozy interior.

A Hidden Gem for Vegan Sushi Lovers! Tane Vegan Izakaya in Berkeley is a must-visit if you're into innovative and flavorful vegan Japanese cuisine. It’s a small, cozy spot with limited seating, so I highly recommend making a reservation ahead of time. We tried two specialty rolls — the Point Reyes and the Barbers. The Point Reyes definitely brings the heat! The habanero sauce adds a serious kick, so it's not for the faint of heart — but if you love spice, you’ll enjoy it. The Barbers roll was a fun surprise — only one piece had the spicy sauce, so it turned into a playful little sushi roulette! The Avocado Nigiri was simple and delicious, and we ended the meal with the Yuzu Vegan Cheesecake, which was absolutely phenomenal — citrusy, creamy, and perfectly balanced. Overall, Tane delivers an exceptional vegan sushi experience. Whether you're vegan or not, it's well worth the visit!

Charming, true-to-form classic sushi experience with a fully vegan menu! Reservations highly recommended due to very limited seating & the restaurant's popularity. The specialty rolls are quite filling. Atmosphere is lively and great for friends to catch up. Miso soup ($3) - light, hot, perfect for a chilly evening in Berkeley. Warms up your insides and your soul 😊 Kailua ($16) - my favorite out of the two rolls I had. Such a good mix of sweet and tangy. I really loved the pickled mango. The Wedge ($17) - crispy rice topped with spicy tofu that honestly tasted really similar to real spicy tuna, just without the fishy taste (which I do like, don't get me wrong). My friend and I made reservations online & arrived about an hour early but they still seated us, which was very accommodating. We were put in the corner of the bar, which was a little cramped and awkward but we still had enough space. Service was very attentive, with constant water refills. Great time overall and so much fun getting to see my pal! :)

Excellent restaurant we found by accident. We were here for a play and this restaurant was well rated and we are vegetarians. We went in here and ordered the brussel sprouts that disappeared momentarily into our mouths. The couple of vegan sushi and gyoza, we three were full. I wish we didn't have to run to a play and enjoy the dishes slowly. However, the service was swift for our needs, friendly and the food was very tasty. Definitely a good spot for our next visit.

It is a new vegan sushi and ramen addition to the already crowded Berkeley food scene. The place is small but well decorated. The service was very quick. We ordered two sushi plates , a grilled shishito appetizer and a spicy garlic ramen. The sushis were crisp and nicely done. The plating was appealing. We had a sushi called Barbers which was an arrangement of 5 sushis with one of them an extra spicy one that is hidden and whoever gets it can cool it of with a sweet sake in the middle. It was fun eating that to see who gets the hot sushi. I had the luck of having that, it was really hot and the sake was a good cooler. The ramen was ok. The base was good , but the ramen was clumpy with major uncooked clumps. Except for that the food was good and gets 4 stars.

Our first time back for dinner in awhile. We had the Gyoza, Roasted Beets Salad, Katsu Caesar Salad, Loaded Potatoes (firey), Brussels Sprouts. Lots of food for two people. I would have the Roasted Beets Salad again. It is pretty small (I would estimate 30 or so?) and reservations are recommended. We sat at the sushi bar counter. I don't think that they serve any N/A beverages other than water and tea? If you are driving there, allow time for finding parking. Even more difficult now in 2025!

This is one of the very few vegan restaurants I really liked. My friend suggested visiting this place and I agreed with hesitation. To my surprise, everything we ordered was quite tasty. They have very creamy sauces that taste amazing and is hard to believe that it is 100% vegan. We tried garlic edamame for starters which tasted great but comes with the shells so takes an effort to eat it. We tried variety of their speciality rolls - pacifica, half moon, pokai, kailua and point Reyes. They were all good but highly recommend pacifica. The place is generally very crowded so make sure to make reservations before visiting. The restaurant is very small has a cute likeable ambience. The service is slow but the servers are helpful and friendly. The food options are very expensive for the qty they serve but worth a try once. It’s in the downtown Berkeley area so finding a parking spot is hard.

They had wide variety of vegan/vegetarian sushi rolls. I would suggest anyone to visit and try their options even if you are not vegan. Our experience was great, we tried their 12 different sushi options. Some of them I am attaching in pictures either names/captions. Their salad and fried tempura was okay. They said they also have a branch in Honolulu, HI. You will also require reservations in advance to visit and try so make sure you reserve before you go.

You will also require reservations in advance to visit and try so make sure you reserve before you go.

i’ve been here twice. The first time was a 3 1/2 star experience and this time it was more like 2 1/2 stars, but I was generous and just rated it 3 stars. The first time our server was incredibly rude to us. I don’t remember his name and I didn’t notice him this time around, so perhaps he quit and got a job better suited to his personality. the second time our waiters weren’t rude, but they weren’t very attentive and we had to ask for things multiple times before they made their way to us. We ordered a lot and everything was delicious with the exception of the Point Reyes roll, which after taking our first bite each of us thought something was spoiled and we were so grossed out that we ordered a roll that we had enjoyed earlier to help cleanse our palette. after the Point Reyes role, one of my friends became visibly sick and vomited that night. I got sick the next day and had stomach pain and diarrhea all day. I think something, perhaps the mushroom, they put on the Point Reyes roll was sour which is unfortunate given how expensive this place is. i’m probably never gonna come back.

Okayish place, not living up to ‘Shizen’s sister store mark’ Or did we order all the wrong things.. Veggie tempura- Very hard to chew, not yum! Specialty sushi: Half moon - Mexican appetizer more than a sushi Point Reyes - Mushroom pieces were too big, made the sushi a bit chewy Corn was good!!

I come here because only my boyfriend likes the sushi rolls. In the past I've ordered ramen and have tried different ones but all of them were sub-par. The broth is just flat like flavored water with no depth or complexity. Unlike other vegan ramen I've had that make an effort to make a rich, delicious broth, this one is all show. Because I don't like their ramen and I don't really like sushi rolls for dinner, I ordered miso soup, agedashi tofu, and a side of rice thinking that no one could screw this up. The miso soup was pretty good but it's weird that you have to pay for it. The agedashi tofu was simply awful. Agedashi tofu is named as such because it's bathed in a broth. There was no broth just some sauce drizzled on top and some grated radish on the side. They should have just named the dish "fried tofu." The service is consistently inept. When I asked for a side a rice first the server said they only had sushi rice. She told me that it was steamed rice with a little vinegar in it. I asked if there was any sugar because, to my knowledge (and after having lived in Japan) sushi rice typically has rice vinegar and sugar. The server said that the sushi rice only has some vinegar added. But when I got the rice, I could immediately taste sugar, which makes sense but I just didn't want that to go with agedashi tofu since I wasn't having anything else. The server said she would check if it had sugar. After speaking to everyone in the restaurant including the two guys preparing sushi, no one knew the ingredients of the sushi rice so the server came back after ten minutes and said they are trying to call the manager, who prepares the sushi rice, to find out. She also said again that she believed the sushi rice didn't have sugar "because we are a vegan restaurant." When she saw the confused look on my face, she then said, "we just made some plain rice. Can we give this to you instead?" At this point, I just didn't know what to think. Each time I've come here I try to give this place the benefit of the doubt but never again. Some of the food is innovative but overall I feel this place is a pretentious, overpriced restaurant with poor service and dumb food.
